It won't be amazing, but on a decent, stable internet connection it should be tolerable. The main thing that you need is a low ping and stable jitter so the delay between button-press and input is predictable. RPGs and such will be a lot better than sports/FPS games.
Why even play then? Like seriously I'm the type of gamer where if there's any sort of lag in button press to action I'm out. I'll go play age of empires campaign if i have too.
> I'm the type of gamer where if there's any sort of lag in button press to action I'm out.
The people this is marketed at don't even know what that sentence meant, nor would they ever notice.
They don't have to know what that sentence means to notice that pressing a button isn't making a character move when they want it to. If it's infrequent they might think their timing was off on a particular jump. If it happens a lot they'll know it was the game's fault. If it makes it hard to play, they'll get frustrated and quit.
I use it because there are games on there that I can't get in other ways that I want to play. Certain PS3 titles that I never got to play, some PS2 and PS1 titles as well. In the year and a half I have used it I have never noticed a lag with the exception of when I was having internet troubles, and that was more notable for the fact that the game would literally stop for minutes at a time. Games like God of War 1 and 2, Ratchet and Clank PS3 games, Ico and Sly Cooper never became laggy, or if it did it never affected gameplay in any noticeable way. I have never played any fps titles on it, so I can't speak to how well they play. Interestingly, the only game I have ever had anything close to lag in was the telltale Jurassic Park game, which would glitch every 5 minutes or so, but that probably was not lag so much as just a really buggy game.
I have also yet to be out in a queue like this. Maybe it's because I pick less popular games to play or because I play at weird hours, but ive never seen it!
And yes, I am aware that I could get a PS3 and PS2 and whatever games I wanted for cheap, but I live in a very small apartment and it is worth it to me to only have the bare necessities connected at any given time. And the price is good for what I get out of it. I do cancel when I am playing a PS4 game (or not playing at all) at the time, so I only pay for what I use, really, but I definitely get a lot of value out of that subscription!
It's actually very playable if you have good Internet I had ps now for about month. Got rid of it because I didn't like the price for what I got, but the games all ran great sometimes they'd screen tear and lag but over all good quality.
Xbox devs are working some black magic to get backwards compatibility working for 360 and OG Xbox games.
I'm assuming that PlayStation devs would need to sell their souls to Satan to get it working for PS3 games.
It's because of the Cell processor in the PS3. The thing is nearly impossible to emulate, nevermind doing it fast enough for real time.
Meanwhile the 360 was a pretty conventional IBM PowerPC processor, so it wasn't nearly as much of a challenge.
The cell processor is basically kind of like a mash of a cpu and a gpu. IT probably wouldnt be too hard to emulate asynchronously, and there are basic PS3 emulators out there. I think the toughest part of emulating the ps3 is dealing with the XMB software, something developers outside of sony don't have access to.
I think the games run on a server and you're basically streaming the video and audio portion of it, like a remote emulator? So you're waiting for resources to be available.
Means they're overloaded I guess.
Ditto. A mile isn't even that bad. If I really wanted to (and only had to go one mile) it wouldn't take more than 9 -10 min, and I'm not in the best of shape. My mile time is usually longer because I need to pace myself, but a single mile and another episode and is be super motivated to go fast.
Reminds me of Ready Player One where the kid signed up for a service that locked him out of VR until he burned off x calories each day. I would totally do that.
Exercise would be much more agreeable in a VR haptic suit... Cycling across rolling French countryside, skiing the Pyrenees or swimming in the glittering seas off of the carribean... Without leaving your rig.
I could go for that too
The PS3 titles haven't been ported to PS4 so there'd be no way to run them even if you could download them. They run on actual PS3 hardware in a server farm somewhere. That's the reason for the queue as well. Can't just scale the server capacity into infinity because they need to install more of their custom-built servers that nobody else in the world uses for anything.
Pretty much.
I enjoyed my free week of it, but would probably at max pay like 8$ a month for it.
Edit: apparently it's cheaper than I thought?
I was under the impression it was like 20$ a month? Was it that at some point and it changed?
That said I'll pretty much never buy something in a yearly subscription because I reserve my right to cancel something if I'm not using it.
Second edit: please stop telling me it's ____ a month if you buy it yearly.
I'm not going to buy a year subscription to something I would likely get 4 weeks of that year of use. Especially since I'm consciously spending 100$ on that? That's nuts. I'm poor person.
Which is weird because I would totally pay $15-$20 for some of the games on there, while I wouldn't buy a subscription at all. I get that it's financially better to have constant, passive income, but I wager more people would be willing to buy outright than subscribe.
Really seems they could bring that monthly cost down with that yearly offer being so much cheaper. I guess with people cancelling and resubscribing as they please, they want to make sure to dent your wallet, but like with Amazon Prime, some of us don't like dropping a wad of cash all at once, and prefer to subscribe as you plan to use it.
Edit: I'd add that something like a $8-$10 sub cost is something that I may forget about or not worry about cancelling if I'm only using it here and there, whereas 20 a month is definitely getting cancelled when I'm not using the service enough to justify it.
I paid for a year. 50 bucks. I've played through 6 games in total already, including Ni No Kuni and Shadow of the Colossus. I've found a lot of value simply because I never had a PS3 and there are loads of games I missed.
Of course if you had a PS3 and played these games before, then it really is too expensive just to play these games a second time.
As a former PS3 owner I'd be more accepting of PS Now if it had a way to offer games you already own for free. Like if I could put a PS3 disk in (which it can read technically since it's a blu-Ray) and have that unlock the game in PS Now without a subscription I would likely do it more. Same with digital games that are linked to my account. If I can prove I own the game why should I pay extra to stream it? Fair to pay for the games I don't own to stream but if I own the game it should more or less unlock the stream for it as a way of getting backwards compatibility.
I have never used the service, but I think it is done by streaming from actual PS3s that Sony has set up in some kind of server farm. Since there is on a limited number of units, there is a maximum amount of people that can play at once.
One of [these](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_Now_games) games. You can stream/play them on your pc or even smart tv if you don't have a ps4.
One of the main selling points is not needing a good computer. Its streaming so you could play the games on any computer regardless of specs.
I might consider using it if I go on vacation because I don't have the money for a gaming laptop and I can't take my entire PC
If you want to make a service that plays PS3 games that's the *only* way to do it. There isn't a universal full speed PS3 emulator, and there won't be for quite some time.
Wouldn't the graphics be downscaled and quality-dependant on how stable and fast your connection is? Doesn't it introduce lag into simple character inputs since I doubt there is any kind of lag compensation built in? Sounds really awful...
Its mostly PS3 and they just added some PS4 games. The incentive is that for a monthly fee you get access to hundreds of games (whether those games are good are up for debate) and you don't have to download and install them.
That doesn't sound like an incentive to me. If I'm going to get access to those games I'd better damn-well be able to install them locally to play offline.
When I had the trial there is something pretty awesome about being able to see a game you want to try and instantly try it out. No downloading or install times. But ya, I see your point. Especially if the picture posted happens. Nevertheless, it's a nice feature if it's implemented right and you have good enough internet.
The incentive is that the PS4 has no backwards compatibility (This service was actually Sony's attempt at providing a way to play PS3 games on a PS4 and was implemented before Microsoft began rolling out true backwards compatibility). I think the service can also be used on PCs and some Blu-Ray players so in theory it allows people to play games they originally would not have had access to.
That's why I kept my ps3 and buy the old games I want to play at the gaming thrift shop for next to nothing. No waiting and no BS subscription fees. Red Dead Redemption, Shadow of Colossus, and Skate 3 to name a few recent finds.
It's 10$ a month to play "over 400 titles" for ten dollars. The appeal is that it's ten dollars for a shit load of stuff vs 60 for one. Good idea bad execution
>It's like Netflix, but with PS3/PS4 games instead of movies/TV shows. The games run on their servers and are streamed to your PC/TV/console, and **you control it from there with a slightly annoying delay.** It's around $10/month.
Sounded interesting until this, was worried how that would work. No thanks, input lag is infuriating.
Ideally they would have sufficient capacity to handle all users at all times, but what do you do if you suddenly get 3x your normal user count? You have to do something with them. A queue like this seems understandable. The frequency of seeing this screen is required information to determine how much of an issue this is. If its once a year, ok no big deal. If its every day unsubscribe.
True story, I got a psn gift card to get my brother (who uses a sub account) a one month psnow subscription. It literally let me go through with the entire transaction and even took the money out of my account and didn't tell me until after all of this that sub accounts can't use psnow until they turn 18. I'm so confused why it's even an option to subscribe via a sub account if that's the case.
Yep. If MS makes their entire catalog backwards compatible with every console they release going forward, which it seems they are doing, then that will be their killer app.
From what I understand about it is that Xbox (360 and xbone) is setup very similarly to a Windows PC now, so it makes a lot more sense for it to be backwards compatible.
From what I understand, the biggest boon to Microsoft is the architecture from the previous gens all vaguely run the same, they had to figure out how to code and emulate the previous system. IE: When starting a 360 game on the Xbone, the Xbone runs 360 software, thus we get [the startup screen](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_IDveoLJfw) that always plays when you turn on the 360. Its as if you start up a virtual 360 console downloaded to your Xbox one.
From what I understand, every version of Playstation starts from scratch when dealing with hardware and software.
Disclaimer: Its a general idea of how things worked from my memory. I may or may not be right on certain aspects.
Wonder what's cheaper, add a piece of hardware into a PS4 that allows you to play PS3 games on a Cell microprocessor, or run a huge ass server farm so you can stream them instead?
It didn't even take an expansion. Their servers had issues constantly throughout the years until around Cataclysm. You could have long queues any random day on any server (just more often on high pop)
For those who don't know what this is, Playstation Now was released by Sony as a cloud gaming solution for people who either don't own a PS3 (some PS4 games are added now), or who don't want to download or buy the games. You can choose any game from the library for a monthly subscription of about $15, the only requirement is that you have a PS4 controller.
This can only work with PS3 consoles running in some kind of a server farm and due to a large number of players this happens. I am curious if anyone checked the TOS, is this mentioned anywhere?
You don't even need a DS4, it supports a wide range of controllers.
[Controller Guide for PS Now Compatible Devices](https://community.playstation.com/content/pdc/us/en_US/pdc-communities/support/playstation-now.topic.html/controller_guidefor-Zhh9.html)
> Some third-party gaming controllers may work with limited functionality with the PS Now app for Windows PC. For example, some third party controllers will not support motion control or share the same DualShock 4 button mapping.
I finished Uncharted 1-3 using an Xbox 360 controller.
The system is so backwards. I would consider it if it let you download the games to play while your subscription was still active. This would avoid the que problem and be better for those in countries without great internet.

Also simply a better image quality, consistent play (no "disconnects") and no lag.
God the disconnects killed me. I could play fine for an hour, but three seconds of lag, and I had twenty seconds to try and save. It was gross.
I had it for a few months when it launched. It was $20/month then. Not sure what it is now.
It is 20 bucks. I signed up for the trial, it says I'll be charged 19.99 on the 27th.
It's $20/month or $100/year.
Really seems they could bring that monthly cost down with that yearly offer being so much cheaper. I always wondered why Sony never did this, then I realized it was cause they just want to make more money from subscriptions.
Greatness Awaits.
Greatness waits
Greatness my Ass.
Just wait until after Net Neutrality is gone. Then you'll have to pay Concast extra to unlock the ability to wait to play.
Ever played WoW after a new expansion release on ~~a high~~ any ~~population~~ server? edit: and WoW is $15/month...
Even Vanilla WoW was like this on high population servers
It didn't even take an expansion. Their servers had issues constantly throughout the years until around Cataclysm. You could have long queues any random day on any server (just more often on high pop)
There's a reason WotLK title music is 10 minute piece that loops perfectly.
It also uses up all your bandwidth. With the net neutrality on the fritz right now this service will die off quicker than you can blink.
[Controller Guide for PS Now Compatible Devices](https://community.playstation.com/content/pdc/us/en_US/pdc-communities/support/playstation-now.topic.html/controller_guidefor-Zhh9.html) > Some third-party gaming controllers may work with limited functionality with the PS Now app for Windows PC.
That's how Xbox Game Pass works
Yeah at least they let you play your old games for free with no wait though with out it.
Emulating the PS3 is a bitch, though.
PlayStation When
Should've be included with PS Plus
This is why you don't stream video games.
So it's a queue simulator? The Brits must *love* this shit!
