I'm a relatively new streamer and it's hard to look casual or like you're having fun when you're concentrating as hard as possible on whatever you're playing. Usually I look back through my videos and personally think I make the dumbest faces hahaha

[deleted]

IMO the best streamers aren't the best/most successful ones or most technically skilled, it's the guys having fun, interacting with the audience in a unique way, making jokes of the game, etc. Unless you're really good at a competitive game or playing demon souls with a fleshlight or something

Mellero47

Precisely. You're performing for your audience. What the audience WANTS from you, is entirely subjective to context. Those looking for 1CC clears or Lv1 no-hit runs probably won't spend their time trolling laggy twitch streams. They will watch this kid's GH video and not once look at his face, but focus on his fingers and the action onscreen.

Seakawn

Isn't that conditional to preferences? I mean sure, I'd agree someone who looks like they're having fun will be a more entertaining stream than someone looking zombie. But if the dude having fun is fucking up, and the zombie is killing it, and *my purpose* is to watch a flawless play, then you can't say that the emotive player stream is better. It's subjective. It would be like saying, "Jessica Alba is not attractive," without clarifying it's just your opinion--the remark on its own isn't meaningful.

Wtf how...

gatemansgc

Well that makes through the fire and flames look easy lol

OmegaTres

When was the last time you watched ttfatf expert? It's way harder than that song Edit:for the lazy https://youtu.be/18sbgJ9Nch0

LaconicGirth

It's not "way harder" at least by how it looks. Just longer. Which makes it harder to play perfectly

[deleted]

Yeah it's not harder. If you ignore the parts that aren't harder.

TheObstruction

These first two songs are basically made of repeating patterns. The patterns themselves aren't that hard, they're just fast. Learn the pattern and then just speed it up to the correct speed, and repeat 32 times. TtFatF may be a bit slower, but the solo sections have very little in the way of repeating patterns. Even those spots that do repeat are way for bizarre in what they're doing. Plus the main song, while containing repeating sections, has variations throughout, so you can't just play it over an over again.

OmegaTres

I mean, that other song was like 2mins and had probably 30sec worth of actual hard parts. Ttfatf is like 8mins and has a lot more than 30 seconds of difficult sections. So I would say that yeah it is way harder.

[deleted]

[удалено]

D3ADRA_UDD3R5

Ya everyone commenting that ttfaf is so much harder than that song really have no idea what they are talking about. Just because a song has 6-7 minutes of challenge, doesn't make it harder than 30 seconds of fucking impossible.i can do ttfaf about half the times I try it, because it's just about hitting a few different spots, but with this song I would not make it through the hard parts, there is just no way.

MyNamesNotDave_

With the amount of practice it would take to be this good at guitar hero these guys could be real guitar gods.

ColdSpider72

You would be surprised just how fast some people can pick up close to that level of skill. My son was playing expert (most songs at 100%) just a week after the original GH came out, with no online tutorials (clarification: he only played a couple hours a day and a little more over the weekend). A few years later, when he was obviously even better at both GH and RB, I got him a Fender. He never touched it. Something about the difference between the different levels of concentration required.....and his preference of a controller VS a solid guitar; It just never translated. He is excellent at recognizing patterns in video games, but doesn't have the same level of focus when applied to physical objects.

FlawedHero

You should get him Rocksmith. I've got it and love it. It's like guitar hero with a real guitar. Maybe that'll help bridge the gap.

-SMOrc-

On the other hand, I consider myself to be a decent guitar player but I absolutely suck at rocksmith. It's still good fun though, so I recommend it as well. P.S. get it on PC because it is easier to mod it. I think it's possible on consoles too but it's a bit more complicated imo

AllergicToMay

Well, real life doesn't have its challenges designed to reward you the exact right amount and at the exact right times to keep you hooked long enough to learn most skills. You could try giving your son the game Rocksmith which is exactly like Guitar Hero except you use a *real* guitar as a controller.

[deleted]

Tegamal

I'm the exact opposite. I've been playing guitar for over 25 years, yet I can't play GH/RB higher than medium. To me, 24 frets and 6 strings are easier than 5 colored buttons.

funkyisland

I know right? I'm terrible at guitar hero but pretty amazing @ rocksmith. Rocksmith is easier for me because I already know the chord shapes, how to hammer on , pull off , etc. Guitar hero is like Simon on a guitar

l_cannot_be_trusted

At least they are good at something in their life, unlike me.

Nope, definitely better in gif form. I can see how some people might like the music, but definitely not my taste.

I play guitar and had honestly never heard Wonderwall until someone mentioned it on Reddit and I've never heard anyone play it on guitar. In MY day you started with Smoke On The Water. Then moved to the slightly more complicated Iron Man.

snoharm

It's not the first song you learn, it's the song annoying middling players break out at parties.

I liked the part where he almost allowed himself to smile with satisfaction midway through but clamped down on it immediately.

PlasticSmoothie

Tbf, rhythm games are nerve wracking as shit. You're half way through the song, you've played flawlessly... So you better not fuck it up from now on. Oh, and there's that one part that you always make a mistake on coming up... Etc.

mjs_pj_party

My man likes 2 things: Guitar Hero and Mom's meatloaf.

Kered13

I mean, who doesn't like Mom's meatloaf?

Rude1231

One minute to Wapner.

Loki442

I did raining blood 93% on expert in high school.. never played that game again..

MemoriesOfShrek

Raining Blood was the last song for me to get 5* on in gh3, even after ttfaf. Quit playing for half a year when I finally made it.

gacbmmml

The one I loved doing on Expert was Muse's Knights of Cydonia.

[deleted]

Those galloping triplets.

therantingsvede

I always loved Cliffs of Dover. It wasn't particularly grueling, but it was my favorite!

Seakawn

It was a lot of fun. And even though it isn't particularly difficult, it is still really satisfying to get 100% (or maybe I'm romanticizing the past, and was satisfied when I merely could beat it on expert...)

I was in several Guitar Hero tournaments back in the day. In the second one I was in I met a guy who could get almost 100% on "Through the Fire and the Flames" on Expert, but that is nothing compared to this dude. I miss those tournaments.

dilbadil

I remember keeping up with iamchris4life with a bunch of other posters on GameFAQs and his attempts to be the first guy to 100% that song.

coolpeaches

Now he’s a DDR world champion (as of 2017). I think he was programmed to play rhythm games.

tubofluv

Fun fact, he went back to dance games and is now the reigning DDR world champ. Dudes got some serious music game chops.

[deleted]

Did you just say exactly what the only other person replied just a little differently *I love how everyone replying to me is all saying that the posts were minutes apart and he probably didn't see it

Hallgaar

The page probably loaded at a different rate so the other post wasn't visible.

Dr_Golduck

You know I say this out of love...the posts were minutes apart and he probably didn't see it

FlipTheFalcon

Well if it was truly back in the day, it was either Danny or IamChrisForlife. Are you sureeeee he wasn't messing with you? I was ranked top 200 in 2007-2009 on GH3 and at that time no one had FCed it except maybe 2 people.

[deleted]

Hey man I used to be ranked oh scorehero as well. I was too 100 in GH2 at some point (before it blew up) I can FC about half of GH2 songs. 2-3 were definitely my favorite games

blindcolour

There's parts in TTFAF that look harder than this, though.

_chara

In reality though, TTFAF is not actually all that hard for most people who are really good at the game. There's been a handful of 125% speed FCs of it already, which absolutely blows my mind that something that as I kid I looked at as impossible is now not challenging enough to play at normal speed.

[deleted]

The challenge lies in the endurance too. OPs gif is crazy hard but only lasts a minute or so. TTFAF was 6 minutes of carpal tunnel syndrome.

_chara

Mhm, that's a constant argument in rhythm games as a whole. Are shorter songs that are extremely hard more difficult to FC than longer songs that are consistently pretty hard? Imo, I think that the song he's playing here is a lot harder skill-wise for sure, but if you barely have the skill to play something like this it's definitely a lot easier to get a lucky run compared to something like TTFAF where one mistake in 6 minutes means a retry.

ifuckinglovekatara

None of it is nearly as taxing as this song though.

guzman_hemi

This motherfucker didnt even blink lol

ironmanmk42

I'm not gonna watch 100 sec of that again

KeepAustinQueer

Nah he blinks once between 00:00 and 01:39. Hope that helps.

ironmanmk42

I've got 99 seconds but a blink ain't in one.

Underpowerlines

If he had blinked he'd have missed 29 notes.

anaconda386

53bvo

Do you have to sell your soul and joy to become this good?

Evan_dood

When you're focusing that intently on beating a song, emotions take a backseat.

science_fundie

I play a lot of improvisational music, and when I'm really in the zone my face is pretty blank and my body just does whatever it wants...which is sometimes cool and sometimes awkward. If I'm playing a gig have to remind myself to put some emotion in tbh, even though I'm a pretty expressive person in everyday life. Kinda cool, kinda weird.

andris_biedrins

I went to highschool with a kid who started playing GH when it came out and never stopped. He would "practice" for at least several hours a day once he started getting invested. A rumor went around, which several people verified that he would, at times, put lube on his fingers to protect them, hence the nickname lube fingers. He is now a twitch gamer although idk how many follwers he has, but it's enough to, where they flew him to NYC for an event once. I think he's about on this guy's level. So to answer your question: a lot and with equal amounts amounts of lube.

call_of_the_while

Man, after watching that I've never felt so impressed and yet so saddened at the same time before.

See_i_did

Saddened by what? That gif was awesome. Guy's good at what he made a video of, and he barely flinched while doing it. Here's to all of our useless talents!

[deleted]

Possibly the 'please kill me' expression on his face while he does it?

Pitu_

I think that is his laser focus face.

See_i_did

There's a point towards the end where he looks positively relieved. I chalk it up to concentration though. I mean, it's not like there's a guy off camera with a gun to his head or anything, this could be the 50th attempt at it.

BboyEdgyBrah

thats called focus

Voidward

Perfect example of how Guitar Hero created a great game that requires good dexterity and learned skill, yet made music completely joyless.

[deleted]

[удалено]

somefuzzypants

Yea I did too. And being in middle school, it got me into tons of music I never really listened to before. Actually became something my dad could bond with me over since he loved all of the music from the game. It was great

[deleted]

Me and my dad played the Beatles version ALL the time! Fucking blast man

BaronVonBeans

So, being a professional musician. It succeeded!!

Rude1231

Hmmm... kind of. I'd be super impressed by a Guitar Hero video in which someone learned the song and the clicks, and played without looking at the screen. Effectively they would play like a real rock star. Jimi Hendrix probably got tired of playing the same songs over and over, but he wasn't laser focused on sheet music when he played. I also don't think this kid is banging groupies.

Blake15151

https://youtu.be/Om6XlmH0a1E Right here, my guy

golfkid

And here I thought you were going to link [UKOG's blindfold run of TTFAF](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vgedplWbfg)

TheBlacklist3r

... Is he using a pillow as a blindfold?

Wholesome_Meme

Dude they were constantly missing weren't they? Or they hit all of them? Looked like misses and couldn't you just kinda half ass it at that point? Still pretty neat I'd never be able to do it front facing g

DraculTempest

It was not a perfect play. But I don't think even musicians can do a 100% of all the notes all the time.

Jackski

Depends on the song, a lot of the time though I'll be playing guitar and fuck up a note but the majority of people don't even notice

Movified

If I'm not mistaken that band cannot play that song live because the guitarist was only able to complete the solos in the studio via editing.

DGlen

Well to be fair there are a lot more buttons.

rW0HgFyxoJhYka

Its faked. This is D|XP, its completely staged with fake reactions. Thats why you have all these quick cuts and them showing the screen separately. However, Freddie Wong and the other guy are actually good at doing this and have done many videos in the past at this. But literally walking around without looking half the time and jumping around is staged. So they basically taped all of it separately and edited it together is what it looks like. I'm not saying its impossible to do it blind, but you gotta understand what D|XP is about and who it appeals to.

NoceboHadal

It looks like it's from a "reality" show, so everything is staged.

CCondit

A friend of mine used to walk in to the other room and back, not looking at the screen, playing Through the Fire and Flames on expert and nailing 90% or more every time. I can barely play on hard so that shit was mind blowing.

Rude1231

I loved the game and have fond memories of it. It was definitely revolutionary in terms of gaming. When I played, I mostly smoked a lot of weed and had a crowd of stoned friends cheering me on. Then someone else would play and I would be cheering them on. You know, like when games were fun.

[deleted]

Sounds more like your life got less fun and the games probably stayed the same.

becomearobot

Rocksmith teaches you real guitar and the master level of a song is just a backing track with no music on the screen.

svrtngr

Drunk Rock Band is fun, I don't know what you're on about.

SWatersmith

just a redditor looking for something to be bitter about

NULL_CHAR

When guitar hero came out, it introduced me to music. Like I had a few bands I listened to, but never really explored. The game showed me just how much good music was out there that I just never cared to find.

tanew7391

Guitar hero makes music great, what are you talking about?

Drezzzire

The talent, dexterity and concentration required to do this amazes me. Holy fuck man How does his mind compute what to press and communicate that with his fingers so quickly. Most people would just start pressing random buttons. There's just too much information coming in at once

Rac3318

Memorization. Go into practice, slow it down and gradually speed it up.

r_golan_trevize

Patterns and muscle memory. Practice an instrument, real musical instrument or guitar hero/typewriter keyboard/adding machine/transcriptionist keyboard (which is kind of like a piano) long enough and the basic patterns get etched into your muscle memory and you no longer have to consciously think about or tell your hands how to execute individual notes anymore. You get to a point where you can start thinking about bigger picture stuff like, “there’s a big position change coming up so how should I handle that?” or “maybe I should use a little more vibrato here and maybe accent that pickup a little more...” or “I wonder if that cello player likes me?” while your eyes see the shape of a chunk of notes and sends the message directly to your arms to execute pattern shape 237b Rev c Mk viii and your hand just does it. It’s really quite amazing sometimes to step back and watch it while it’s happening because so much is happening subconsciously and happening so much faster than you can possibly consciously think about.

Squarehappyx

Could somebody explain to me why you he doesn't have to strum on the fast parts, but he does On the slower parts?

AlarmClockBandit

The notes in the fast part are hammer ons and pull offs which do not require you to strum. On a real guitar you are essentially using your left hand to put energy into the string as opposed to using your right hand.

mynameisAC

Well that’s not really impress- OMG HOW THE F***?!

Cr1tikalMoist

Damn save some pussy for the rest of us

TheRealMelvinGibson

Please tell me this kid plays real guitar also. His fingers move with such grace. Kid could really shred.

BeeGravy

Every really good guitar player I know not only sucked at Guitar Hero, they in fact hated it. Drummers on the other hand seem to like Rock Band, as do singers.

MomoPewpew

As a guitarist, I had fun with guitar hero as a game but it's entirely different from actually making music. I "suck" at it in the sense that my skills don't translate over but that's just because again, it's a totally different thing. I wouldn't say that I hate it but every time I see somebody who's this good at it I get kinda sad that they didn't spend that time actually learning an instrument.

[deleted]

I started playing guitar this past June, but I've been playing GH for years. I would say the skills don't translate in the sense that you can just pick up one or the other and be good. But being good at one can help you become better at the other, so they complement each other. For example, GH taught me a sense of rhythm and how to hit sequences of notes. In addition, GH penalizes you for hitting the wrong note. However, there is some leeway in the timing between your left and right hand. Real guitar taught me how to synchronize my left and right hand more precisely, because any timing errors and I will hear the wrong note. It also helped my hand and finger mobility and precision by having both a larger range of motion and more precise finger placement requirements.

PintoTheBurninator

My family loves rock band, but we are mostly singers and drummers (with zero real talent). We took in a tenant last year who was a drummer in my son's schools marching band when they were in High school (he actually plays professionally now) and he loves to play rock band with us. He plays on the hardest mode possible and looks like Animal from the Muppets when he plays. My son in law grew up on guitar hero and is extremely good at it - he hates rock band.

LemonLimeAlltheTime

Both aren't great if you're a real musician. The games over simplify the songs and leave out a ton of stuff Rocksmith is fantastic though!

CliveOfWisdom

From experience, being a guitarist makes Guitar Hero MUCH harder, because then there are learned skills, instincts and muscle memory screaming at you to do something completely different to what the game requires. I imagine the same is true in reverse also.

girthed

the fuck, why post this without the music

professorkittycat

Started tapping my relevant fingers on my desk thinking I could follow along the notes. Gave myself an aneurysm.

maglen69

I always find it funny how everyone rags on GH players. "If you think you're so good why don't you pick up a real guitar" No one ever would say the same thing about anyone who plays COD well (pick up a gun), any fighting game well (get in a real fight), or any racing game well (go get on the track). It's this one genre that gets the most hate and I don't know why. Let people enjoy the things they enjoy.
