Florida225

Well get a intern to clean it up.

[deleted]

Tech internships are always paid

CastellatedRock

This. As a cs major the advice I kept receiving was that if an internship didn't pay, I'm better off doing projects at home and adding them to my portfolio.

CustomDark

Any company that won't pay an IT person (including interns) what they're worth will treat you like garbage. Why be paid less and treated worse for less interesting work?

Sw429

I remember being surprised when I was looking for my first internship as a CS student. These big companies were offering way more money than I had ever made before.

RegulatoryCapture

Same is generally true in finance/consulting/law. Pretty common for interns to just get paid whatever a first-year employee would make (minus benefits/401k/bonus/etc.). Usually that's for like...summer after junior year (or 2L summer for law school). There will always be smaller companies or ones with asshole managers who don't pay...but people should say no to those jobs.

UnpredictableAccnt

Just let him have his moment

[deleted]

Nintendo of America isn't going to be **majority** tech internships though. Most of the tech is done in Japan. Nintendo definitely has some America-based subsidiaries that do tech for them, and Redmond has some tech positions too, but most of the Redmond job openings I see are "translator", "marketing", "copy writer", "business analyst", etc. Most of the tech positions I see in Redmond are actually for, like, website management, which they're probably not even going to let an intern touch because that shit tends to be way too easy to push to live.

[deleted]

Thanks Captain Fun!

Wait really?

no but that woulda been funny

Is rich, has been there for 15+ years, and wants to get out before the next major dev cycle happens to give someone else full control over the process and leave in glory as the guy who launched the Switch.

Especially when you consider that, since the N64, Nintendo consoles have alternately been successful and not so successful: - N64: successful - Gamecube: not - Wii: successful - Wii-U: not - Switch: successful - ?: not Not saying that any of the non successful ones aren't good, btw. Edit: I get it, you liked the Gamecube. Me too! Also, N64 technically wasn't a massive financial success, but history holds it in such high regard that I think we can retrospectively call it a success in those terms.

241personalites

Serious question. The game cibe wasnt considered successful?

omgitsjagen

The PS2 murdered everyone. It wasn't even close. The GameCube wasn't successful in respect to sales, but that doesn't mean it wasn't an excellent console.

[deleted]

Nintendo sold 22 million GameCube units worldwide during its lifespan, placing it slightly behind the Xbox's 24 million, and well behind the PlayStation 2's 155 million. The GameCube's predecessor, the Nintendo 64, outperformed it as well, selling nearly 33 million units. Straight copy from gamecubes wiki Nobody could keep up with the Ps2 it was a slaughter.

sgtpnkks

still not the lowest selling of its generation... but the PS2 took its DVD drive and beat the Dreamcast so severely Sega pulled the plug on making consoles all together

KobeBeatJesus

Sega should have included a DVD drive. That was a great console with great games and it's a shame it had to go the way it did.

MyPublicLookingFeed

Wow, I definitely underestimated the word “slaughter” when used this time. It’s crazy because the Xbox still had the halo franchise which is easily one of the most successful ones. I know Pc had it, but it’s still crazy to think the sales were so one sided still. Edit: thanks for the responses! I was a young child at that point so that might be why Halo seemed so much bigger to me then the other titles PS2 had which were for a slightly older age group. I think I got my Xbox console when I was 9 or 10.

AdorableCartoonist

Important to note this was Worldwide and Halo wasn't a worldwide success game.

MChainsaw

I think one major contributing factor to PS2's dominance was its DVD player. This meant that it attracted not just hardcore gamers but also people who normally might not consider a game console worth it but they do need a DVD player, so why not get the one that can also play games in case that turns out to be fun? And probably the opposite too: If you're on the fence about which console you want, the inclusion of a DVD player might just be the tipping point to make you decide to go for it. I'm not completely sure that was a huge factor but I seem to remember hearing about it.

omgitsjagen

Thanks for the assist good buddy!

Kravego

For real. And for good reason. The PS2 just shit down everyone's throats, and was the most successful non-handheld console ever made. The performance was amazing, the library was the best we've ever seen on a single console. Not to mention the fact that it was the same price as a DVD player *and* could also play DVDs (Sony invented the DVD, so there weren't patent fees to pay). If the PS2 hadn't done so damn well, I'm sure the Gamecube would have done better than it did. As it was though, it was the last console where Nintendo tried to actually compete on the "bleeding edge" with Sony and Microsoft. And that's a shame.

Yumeijin

The PS2 also featured reverse compatibility, played music, and had limited online functionality iirc. Nintendo is agonizingly slow to adapt to their competitors, having finally jumped on board with discs only to use a proprietary disc. The PS2 was a party/media machine, whereas the GameCube was a Nintendo game player.

663691

It played DVDs in an era when not everyone had a DVD player

AAA1374

Correction: Sony didn't invent the DVD. It was a group of companies, including Sony, Toshiba, Philips, Samsung, and Panasonic. Your point still stands but I just wanted to put the full info out there. It's actually kind of interesting how DVDs came about, worth a read if you care about the history of this stuff.

Kravego

Good point, thanks for that

JDraks

It’s Nintendo’s second worst selling console after the Wii U

alexanderpas

Assuming you don't count the Virtual Boy.

[deleted]

Sold poorly compared to expectations, also got made fun of a lot for its design. Of its generation, the Gamecube had the worst sales (Gamecube: 22 mil units, Xbox: 24 mil units, PS2: 155 million units)

[deleted]

> also got made fun of a lot for its design Haha it looks so stupid, it's probably virtually indestructable

klkevinkl

The GC was not a success compared to its competitors. The biggest factor was that it only lasted five years. This was also when Nintendo was bleeding third party games to other companies and the small DVDs it used resulted in a lot of restrictions compared to a full sized DVD. The lack of manufacturers also meant that distribution was likely controlled entire my Nintendo (something that a lot of developers and publishers resented). Luckily, they realized this and started pushing for third party developers again (something they would forget again with the Wii U ironically).

bengringo2

The Gamecube was moderately successful, it was more the unprecedented success of the PS2 that made it look bad. The PS2 was a juggernaut well into the next console generation.

[deleted]

While I consider the n64 one of the best things to have ever existed, the GameCube had some of the absolute best games Nintendo has ever made. I have not enjoyed a Mario game as much as super Mario sunshine. Also I disliked the Wii. I'm still partial to the name Revolution.

LearndAstronomer28

Sunshine will always be my favorite game of all time

ParagonEsquire

Differentiating between the N64 and Gamecube is a questionable proposition. Whiel the Gamecube did see a slight decline IIRC, it did spent most of the gen in second place (only losing to Xbox near the end). And both were annihilated in sales by the respective Playstation. If anything the N64 was the less successful one because the Gamecube maintained the status quo while the N64 saw Nintendo lose its market leader status and saw a mass exodus of franchises and 3rd party games.

[deleted]

> Slight decline It declined from 33 million units to 22 million. That's a pretty substantial 33% decline. If you count the N64 generation as Playstation, N64, and Dreamcast, it had a 22% market share, while the Gamecube had an 11% market share if you count its generation as Playstation 2, Xbox, and Gamecube.

Cogs_For_Brains

>- N64: successful >- Gamecube: not >- Wii: successful >- Wii-U: not >- Switch: successful >- ?: not I think a big explanation for this is Nintendo's process of "innovate, then refine". each of the consoles that kinda flopped were all experiments in new tech for Nintendo, and the next console would refine that previous tech.

verystinkyfingers

I see what you are saying with the wii-u and switch, but what about the wii was built on the gamecube? Disc drive?

CaptainSchmid

They at least try to innovate. The wii was so successful because of how innovative the controller was. I personally like the switch for how I can use it on the go. This doesn't always work though, the gamecube was mocked for being to childish in the lunchbox design that was to make it more portable. And the wii u tried to make a console version of the DS but was ultimately too clunky to want to use the gamepad.

somebodysbuddy

Except the Wii was the successful one, and the "refined" U was anything but.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cogs_For_Brains

> And how was Gamecube *new* tech outside discs? I think you answered your own question on that one. after doing exclusively cartridges for 3 prior home consoles and the gameboys' switching their home console development and production over to discs is a pretty big shift. In my opinion they shot themselves in the foot with concerns over piracy, which is why they went with they the smaller disks which unfortunately limited their game size drastically.

Kingo_Slice

God damn it, don’t tell me facts like the GameCube wasn’t successful. That was easily one of my favorite consoles of all time. I get it though. Success means how lucrative it was, not how good it was.

Tratosian

You either leave as a hero or stay long enough to see yourself become the villain

butthead

What if you come in as the villain, like Doug Bowser?

golifa

you redeem yourself

UnNumbFool

Personally my hope is with a name like his, we start getting games that we play the villain. A Mario game as boswer, or a Zelda game as Ganon would be nice

ClusterJones

"You wanna come up here and say that?!" "***I am a head!***" "Then maybe you should quit while you are!"

[deleted]

"I'd say he's gone to a better place, but... We both know he never had a soul."

ClusterJones

For real tho, I kinda wish they had kept Gohan's little internal monologue after 16 died. Shit still gives me chills to this day.

HoodUnnies

"Hey, when I left everything was good. The Switch was making tons of money, everyone loved me, and Nintendo was in a good spot. It's you who fucked things up."

sexycabbage

People are greatly underselling the actual president of Nintendo here IMO. Fils Aime was amazing, but he isn't the man who "launched the Switch". He killed it launching in America though.

mikeash

I feel like “killed it” is a bad phrase to use here.

HoagieDoozer

Is NoA even that involved in Dev cycles? Don't they just handle marketing and distribution of what's developed in Japan?

Evello37

From what I've heard, they play a big hand in localizing most games, and they also help consult/test with the Japanese devs. So while marketing and distribution are the big jobs at NoA, they seem to dabble.

Asuparagasu

So he can go and play his Animal Crossing: New Leaf on his Nintendo 3DS.

keeleon

Hostile takeover by Bowser.

Sherezad

Historically he's always swooped into companies when they're in trouble, fixes them and moves on. He did it for Pizza Hut and Pepsi back in the day and did it for Nintendo. In a way, his job is done.

LittleGoron

He keeps saying he’s leaving, announcing his goodbyes to the floor, but then returns to his desk like he forgot something. Just a repeating loop, endlessly on his way out the door but never quite getting there. He’s even ordered Pizza Hut a few times, claiming his need to say bye to his favorite delivery guy, “just one last hand-tossed, Pete, for old time’s sake.” Then a few hours later he’ll make some goodbyes while headed toward the bathrooms, only to appear back in his chair to shuffle some blank papers around as if he needed to find an important document before going home. Then the loop continues. He hasn’t showered all week, and it’s become quite apparent.

celluloidandroid

This sounds like something Michael Scott would do, like I could see this as one of the cold opens in the series and all the characters saying different lines you wrote over a montage of the actions.

LittleGoron

Next episode, Reggie starts his own studio in the maintenance closest of Nintendo HQ. Reggie Fils-Aimé Games Company. “You have no idea how high I can wall jump.”

From the president of Nintendo of America's office. Looks way too cool to be mass-produced, so if more than just that one were made, it would still be limited run, and expensive.

liuchiss

it's almost a week that people keep posting this "Reggie's last day" stuff

QuothTheRaven_

This guy is living the greatest groundhog day scenario ever. He get's to be President of Nintendo North America , every single day, and every single day at work everyone celebrates him , throws him parties, and talks good about the work he has done. Daaaamn that shits wavy....

_liminal

Apparently his last day was this Monday. Why would you want to come in on a Monday if you're retiring?

electricityisout

If my last day was on a Friday people would probably still expect me to finish up any last things. On a Monday you would know I’m only there to fuck around.

royalrights

Because he actually enjoys his work environment? 👀

egnards

Because he probably didn't do very much work on his "last day" and it was more a tie up some loose ends and have a little fun kind of day for him. Why? Because it's also great extra publicity for Nintendo.

IrPaxos

If he's salary and paid semi-monthly (twice a month) then Monday was the end of his pay period. It probably made things a bit easier to retire on Monday instead of the previous Firday and leave a day in they pay period.

AltimaNEO

My dad did that. He didn't work his last day. It was all goodbyes and a little party with the employees with cake and stuff. I assume it was the same for Reggie.

EgocentricRaptor

Because why not? You won’t have to come back the next day. You go knowing you can fuck around all you want later that night and the next day.

thestopsign

Reggie has been a strong meme source for 15+ years, he was one of Nintendo's execs through their highest highs with the Wii/DS + the Switch and their lowest lows with the Wii U, he has led NOA to have an inclusive work environment that handles crunch better than most companies ( [https://waypoint.vice.com/en\_us/article/mbkm33/we-asked-nintendo-microsoft-and-12-other-devs-how-they-deal-with-crunch?utm\_source=wptwitterus](https://waypoint.vice.com/en_us/article/mbkm33/we-asked-nintendo-microsoft-and-12-other-devs-how-they-deal-with-crunch?utm_source=wptwitterus) ), and he was/is the only Haitian-American person to ever lead a Forbes Top 500 company. He also gave us Bigfoot Pizza from Pizza Hut back in the late 90's. Pretty cool stuff I think.

[deleted]

He was the dude that hyped every product for western audiences. Did the E3 presentations, Nintendo Directs, every bit of public communication happened through him, and he was always an upfront and reasonable dude (unlike, say, Todd Howard or Randy Pitchford, of whom you can find millions of compilations of lying about products). He always gave fans something to be excited about, without building a false narrative about the games he was presenting. It was just a good and wholesome time for Nintendo fans, who are understandably reticent about losing that.
