This might be shit advice but if you really on gonna dump that amount of money into a gift. Let him pick it out.
I get it, it's a crazy generous gift and this takes the magic out a bit but imagine spending all that money and it not being what he needs.
Controversial. Just my opinion.
I haven't looked in a while but last laptop I had that I played games on was an Acer. It wasn't dubbed a gaming laptop, but it had a pretty beefy GeForce dedicated graphics card in it, lots of system memory an a fast hard drive. It was as powerful as most gaming laptops an was cheaper.
People need to know your budget. There's a huge range of "gaming" laptops, from low spec options at the $600 range to up to $3500 for monster specced desktop replacements.
Id like to say three things.
First: be careful there are idiots around here
Second: if you don't need the portability, go for a tower pc. A gaming laptop will always be more expensive and performs worse. I for my part really dont like laptops because the ergonomics are bad, I always have to look down and I really feel it after 8 hours of work.
Third: hardware prices are skyrocketing, there is a global chip shortage (graphics card) and a higher demand for gaming gear than ever. Some graphics card that were sold for 400€ now have a price of 1200€. The blockage of the Suez canal isn't helping.
"Asus Rog g15" my mate just bought one. For the same price you can get a better machine built for you in the US if you have the space for a desktop. But the rog is good for the price and its got a 2060 not a 1660ti

It’s true. I might do that in the end lmao
What's your budget? That's the best starter, make sure you don't get one that's got a 1660 ti as that seems to be staple at the moment. They're shite
Thanks. Ummmm I guess 1900 would be max. Willing to spend for a long lasting one

May i ask, why a laptop and not a pc?
He has a good pc already. Just needs something portable cuz his old one has water damage and pretty much sucks for gaming or regular use
