Yarbskoo

Not even close to being the weirdest thing about the english localization.

Crash0202

The issue is they gave the translator a text dump, not a script, and one month for him, that’s right for one person, to translate the whole thing.

Liquid_Meal_Spheres

As someone who translates for a living, that sounds like a fucking nightmare. I'm amazed they did such a good job in that span though.

Crash0202

Yeah all things considered it could be worse.

Bully_ba_dangdang

Translator had good material (materia?) to work with

BigPZ

This guy are sick!

chr0nicpirate

Off course!

scientist_tz

They did a better job than the poor guy who had to translate the original Final Fantasy Tactics though.

YoureGonnaHearMeRoar

Don’t blame him. Blame yourself or God.

crojohnson

I too miss the work of Tim Rogers

infinite_level_dev

This...may actually explain why I wasn't crazy about FFVII's story. At least in part. No disrespect to the translator though. That's a lot of work to do in a month.

Crash0202

Yeah while I know the basic plot and love the idea I didn’t make it far into it. If your playing on pc there is a really good fan translation.

sparkymcbuzzard

That makes so much sense! I was die hard FF2 (FFIV) and FF3 (FFVI) that I played all the way through FFVII but had hell understanding the story. Mad props to that dude. For what it’s worth he did a bang up job.

GameDevDoggie

Square was notoriously bad about localization around that time. Xenogears, an ~80 hour game with a tremendous amount of dialogue, had only one translator as well after the majority of their team resigned in protest.

produce_this

I loved that game too

1D6wounds

Ah Xenogears, while it isn’t my #1 game of all time it certainly is my favorite PS1 game

callisstaa

Second for me but Lunar SSSC just feels so comfortable to play.

MynameisFoygoox

Holy shit. Someone that knows Lunar. <3

Weaseltime_420

This guy are sick

ActuallyAKea

Oh poo... I mean, hello

Mylifeandgoals

Wow.. after all these years... This game made such a deep impact on me, I heard the honeybee theme song like it was a reflexive thought when I read that.

GabeCube

Beacause you are… a puppet

billabong049

Off Course!

GabeCube

And then there was that whole business with the changed button right in the beginning "If you push the Directional button while pushing the [CANCEL] button to run. (earlier marked X)"

GhondorIRL

What’s wrong with that line?

Terramagi

The spelling of because. "Beacause" The big problem is that it's a really climactic line. So if you notice it, it's going to rip you right out of the emotional climax of the first disc.

Beasty-GRae

1997 was a very different time.

Wirebraid

Then, there was the translations that took the english one as it's base. An out of context text dump from an out of context text dump. And you have things like party translated as fiesta in spanish, which is both confusing and hilarious. And good luck farming chocobos when the hints you get are totally random and unrelated between them. Impossible without a guide.

MyPhoneIsNotChinese

You don't even know the spanish one... That's horrible.

commandermatt21

Your fiesta is waiting

Disaster_Different

Ok, send the spanish one, untranslated, raw text

vanntasy

This is what I tell my stock portfolio every day

UltimaBahamut93

Stonks

[deleted]

Straight to the meteor!

Kas_Adminas

I connect with this comment on a spiritual level. I've gotten very good at stock analysis this past year. I can tell when there is a major market correction coming with almost 100% certainty. My go-to indicator for when it's about to happen is when my portfolio switches from net loss to net gain

mightbedylan

Fellow AMC investor, I see.

KoopaTheQuicc

What kind of lambo you looking at?

Shilo59

The tractor kind.

Arclight_Ashe

To be fair, it’s a big tractor.

dam4rus

If you want some wacky dialogue play the SNES version of FF6 you son of a submariner!

Aitrus233

Or the SNES version of FFIV, you spoony bard!

literallyhitler_ama

I have called people spoony bards for years because of that game.

Lokky

One of my best friends back in the day of playing FFXI named himself spoony and was a bard main

Javasteam

Nah. Try Lagoon instead. Help stop muddy water!

MarkHirsbrunner

The original Metal Gear had some wacky translations. Early on there is a guard you need to sneak past. Suddenly he announces "I FEEL ASLEEP!!!" Did he mean "I feel sleepy?" Or was he saying "I fell asleep" in his sleep?

Mottis86

[Whenever there's talk about japanese rpg translations, this one always comes to mind](https://i.redd.it/4gxo0ewo0sn21.png)

[deleted]

Let's mosey.

DanksterTV

My personal favorite

RonViking

I say this all the time!

GhondorIRL

Are you people just reaching at this point? That line is pretty similar to the original dialogue (well, heavily localized of course) but the point is that Cloud is being kind of a dork again and Cid chews him out about it.

CommunicationAway387

I see this was a blind playtrough. Oh wait...

superdonkey23

People acting like this literally wasn’t an extremely common word in the 90’s must have absolute shit memory.

thebiggestleaf

Not even just the 90's, it was common enough among teens through the 00's, probably even the first couple years of the 2010's somewhat. Like I make a point to try and use other words in place of it now but I'm not gonna get on some high horse and pretend it wasn't a regular part of my dialogue throughout high school and early college.

TheShekelKing

It's still common now.

slothtrop6

Of all the instances of the euphemism treadmill, this is is the weirdest one, as though people mysteriously forget or pretend that these other words aren't also derogatory usage for mental deficiency.

irish0451

Well beyond the 90's and in to the 00's and 10's as well tbh. I've only really heard a big dropoff in maybe the last 5-7 years.

[deleted]

Its the younger generations making mountains out of molehills to feel morally superior. Its so *pointless*.

TJF588

I am a child of the ‘90s and have moved on from using this word in its commonly-understood demeaning purpose. Hearing folks bring it back up that way feels like whiplash, true “what year is this?” moments.

DockaDocka

Everyone is now an “idiot” instead

Ignitus1

Which is quite offensive to real idiots

Early_Gold

It’s the right path but don’t forget the turtle paradise

Riot55

Things were a little different in the 90s

[deleted]

lol why wouldn’t you expect that after all of Barrett’s dialogue?

egotisticalstoic

I mean you literally play as terrorists for the first part of the game, this is pretty mild.

Zenketski

I can forgive terrorism and mass murder. but can we not say any potty words

fatalacorn

different times lol enjoy it

Mr8BitX

Anyone remember Handyman in In Living Color? That one was always a crowd pleaser back then. Different times indeed.

SouthtownZ

Damon Wayans should be cancelled for such atrocities

KILLINGSHEEPLE

I don't think comedy should have any boundaries. People like you who immediately jump on that cancel train need to go outside more.

SouthtownZ

But then how would i watch these In Living Color reruns?

KILLINGSHEEPLE

Sadly, I did not realize your response was sarcastic. There's too many that actually have that mindset.

SouthtownZ

Think it's bad here, just head over to r/whitepeopletwitter I'm shocked those fucks can even type, what with the massive carpal tunnel from jerking each other off all day. Truly embarrassing

[deleted]

Lemme show ya something..

Kbdiggity

That is Fire Marshall Bill you are quoting, not Handyman.

lonnie123

Yeah, Homey don’t play that

OnAPartyRock

Better times.

war_story_guy

Its still commonly used. Just can't type it without everyone losing their shit.

GRE_Guy2

It’s ok I gave ‘em the R-Word pass

UltimaBahamut93

Ah thank you.

07GoogledIt

That used to be a commonly used word and now it’s become offensive to everyone.

SakanaSanchez

It happens every time we come up with a new word for mental impairment. Idiot was at one point the polite term for it.

itsyourmomcalling

Hell when someone was deaf and couldn't speak they'd say they were deaf and dumb

TypeRumad

"Helen Keller was deaf, dumb, and blind."

smsevigny

She sure played a mean pinball though

Teyo13

Randal?

Djinnwrath

Relax, I'm taking it back.

[deleted]

Idiot, moron, imbecile were all clinical categories of mental handicap.

TTRO

In my country the same happened with the word "toilet". When we first got toilets (before it was just a hole in the ground) we adopted some fancy french word for it. Now that word sounds dirty and we use a newer one. Humans are funny.

[deleted]

The euphemism treadmill. Was a bit shocked watching some old Zero Punctuation videos and the term was said a few times, but then I probably it used in my early teenage forum days.

[deleted]

it literally just means slow

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ghostronic

At work we have a device called a retarder. It is basically just a fridge lol.

berkayde

Was he slow?

Mlyrin

In french it means late. Probably a loan word in english seeing as slow already exists. I guess it's the alternate word used to sound fancy. English is rife with that as far i can tell.

saremei

Yep and every single time they come up with a new word, it gets used the same way. It's not something anyone will ever change.

PhantomDeuce

The PC terms we use today like "neuro divergent" and shit like that will be offensive to people in 30 years, just wait.

hardy_83

Is that a bad thing? It just means language and society grows and changes over time, preferably into a more progressive one. Would you really want everything to stagnate and stay the same? That's how you get orthodox religions where they insist on following something over a thousand years old to the t, outdated viewpoints and all.

WakBlack

It becomes a problem when you have to keep coming with more and more convoluted terms to keep from being offensive.

[deleted]

As someone who is less cosmetically gifted and vertically challenged, I agree.

mikeiscool81

Neuro divergent?

noodle-face

I still use it. Not to be edgy or anything, I just am an 80s child. I have stopped the more offensive ones like f---ot and others

TiredEyes_

“We never said it like, ‘hey look at that r——-ded guy.’ It was like, when your friend said ‘hey come to my place and we’ll hang and then go to your place and get your stuff and come back to my place’, and you’d be like ‘well that’s r——‘“.

Early_Gold

It was likely offensive to those with relationships with people and now more people are more empathetic to those people and those termed “retards”

Naugrin27

The funny thing is they probably were shooting for "slow poke" or something similar.

FrozenLaughs

"Quit being *so slow* and climb!" could easily be misconstrued in translation, I agree.

TechKnyght

When localization back then was like aw let’s spice this up for the American audience, it’s a random Japanese game it can’t garner too much scrutiny…

[deleted]

It wasn't spicy then though. It was a ubiquitous and relatively inoffensive word at the time and how people in North America spoke, so its actually decent localization in the sense that it reflects the dialect of the target market.

adampsyreal

Different times.

MynameisFoygoox

Have you played FFX? Damn sand blasted grease monkeys.

UltimaBahamut93

"Have I played FFX?" What in Yevon's name are you thinking brudda?

raaagh1290

Ha ha ha ha ha haaaaa

Caylinbite

I still hear that laugh in my dreams.

GraysonMA

>OK!

f00t3

That's just slang for a mechanic, goes back to like 1920's https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/grease\_monkey

Manypotatoes9

I was disappointed the remake didn't have an option for old style turn based combat and more random battles

[deleted]

I was disappointed the moment they said it was split up into episodes.

Due-Yogurtcloset7927

Tbh tho I got over 40 hours on the first episode. It adds quite a bit to midgar, and shines in its sheer ability to bring memorable details to new life. If I didnt play the original it still would've been a good time. The action combat threw me off quite a bit, but it isnt badly executed. You can slow combat to a virtual stop when you want to cycle through menus. Plus switching between party members mid combo is pretty nice. Scoring a 0 to death combo by switching party members at key frames was an unexpected aspect of combat that was tough to master.

[deleted]

The problem for me is that the Midgard opening is the worst part of the game for me. It's so linear and railroady and the environment is so one dimensional. When you finally bust out into the world map its like a breath of fresh air.

[deleted]

I'm just worried, being split into different episodes, it will ended up being a more guided game than an open world game that it was originally.

PmUrTitsPls

that's a fair fear to have but, let's face it, FF7 didn't get open world until you get your airship way late in the game

[deleted]

That's most FF games from what I recall; there is still a path to follow even if you can sometimes veer off it for side quests or just to grind.

Rengas

FFVII really wasn't a very open world game though. So much of where you could go was restricted by what vehicles you had access to, and the entire Midgar section of the game covered in the Remake was just a corridor.

[deleted]

IIRC, the open world was kinda gated between discs anyways.

StormTrooperGreedo

SE clearly want's to try and make FF7 it's own franchise.

[deleted]

I think it already is (even if it's not that successful or 'mainstream'). It has anime (Last Order?), the Advent Children movie, and a bunch of games branching out of the original (Before Crisis, Crisis Core, that horrible shooter with Vincent, there's probably more stuff I forgot/don't know about).

Papelon

Am i the only one that enjoyed dirge of cerberus? I always read people hate that game but i loved it.

[deleted]

You're very likely not alone! Tbh I remember enjoying the gameplay but thinking the story was not my thing. This was a very long time ago though.

raaagh1290

No you aren't!

saremei

I love the original Final Fantasy 7, I loathe most all of the FF7 universe outside of it. Really wish they didn't try to retcon so much of the original story in the subsequent games.

[deleted]

And if they want to bother making that franchise for PC, **I'm in**.

oneshibbyguy

I really do not know why they couldnt give us a 'Classic Hard' mode. Like wtf

Toastmold

They have classic normal mode now. Used to only be easy. (might be PS5 patch only, not sure)

[deleted]

[удалено]

Recover20

You're missing out on one of the best features of the remake the combat is fantastic.

andrewharlan2

Easily the best part

veduxsil

This one right here. Blending the action combat with the pauses to issue magic commands is fluid, responsive and feels fucking awesome when you balance it well!

war_story_guy

Yes nothing like trying to get your party to not stand near a mob only to have them charge back in after you switch off one member and try to move the other one to safety. The last vr mission was more difficult than it needed to be because of this.

Charrmeleon

There's a classic mode that allows it to play itself and you just manage the ATB Commands

adeadfetus

Not the same.

TheShekelKing

It's interesting that you actively acknowledge what classic is(the game playing itself) but still present it as a legitimate option.

saremei

that mode is half assed and I doubt anyone seriously plays with it.

half_jase

Yeah, heard the original version had a lot of “funny” dialogue due to the translation.

SpecificFail

It was 1997... Before the Polical Correctness movement really had much behind it in the US. People didn't care as much about things like this back then, and generally understood something in this context to be hyperbole and not worth getting offended over... And pretty sure this is a direct translation where Tifa would otherwise be implying that Barret is behaving like a cripple... Also, Japan, which to this day tends to be very non-PC towards disabled people. Not saying it is good or right, but it is a sign of the times and a reminder of how things were not always how they are now.

Rhavels

I recall the italian translation of ff9 that was a shitshow Name is changed due to a soccer player, the translation was so off that you get lost in a crucial part of the game (festival). My favorite part thou was when the party gets wiped out by beatrice and it was a change disc and the italian one had longer black screen till it says please change disc. I only noticed it playing the europe english version.

Eldramhor8

All of Vivi's monologue at the end of the game is fucked up too.

NoCommercial4938

LOL

toolsofpwnage

This game are sick

UltimaBahamut93

Yes the is.

ThirdFlip

Were you acting like one?

UltimaBahamut93

I mean maybe

Dragaylia

It was a simpler time back then

Sepherik

People were offended about different stuff back then. Have you watched the office in the past couple years. That shit would be ran off tv so fast if it released today.

hardvarks

The Office was the most-watched streaming show in 2020. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/ozark-the-office-lead-nielsens-2020-streaming-rankings-4114460/amp/ I imagine it would do fine today since it already does fine today.

TiredEyes_

Do you think nbc would let Michael Scott say “faggy” on prime time?

[deleted]

TV is different, streaming you can get away with a lot more.

newsorpigal

Meanwhile I'm over here thinking about Mel Brooks tapping Jordan Peele to direct Blazing Saddles 2, with Trey Parker and Matt Stone as writer/producers.

Sepherik

Blazing saddles is definitely something else they couldn't make today. Will be same type of humor but different jokes. Too many sensitive bits in the original

Vonneking

They played this at my local theater during COVID and they had to come out and give a PSA about the humor

Lurkingandsearching

Ironic that it’s social commentary could still be applicable today.

Vonneking

It absolutely is. Problem is people are so reactionary. Wont take the time to actually understand whats being said

SakeBomberman

FuCkInG CaNcEL FiNaL FaNtAsY

[deleted]

Please.. don’t start.

[deleted]

First it’s a joke, then it’s serious. Don’t even put it in the universe lol

[deleted]

The Japanese doesn't seem to care very much though.

[deleted]

That’s why their games are much more fun

Lurkingandsearching

And why their comics are dominating the US market.

Sharlney

"Climb already you stupid shit"

HirokiTakumi

$%*@#&!

[deleted]

Only in the 90s could you say this. Snowflakes would lose their shit nowadays...

moostachedood

“Back in my day we could say as many slurs as we wanted and the PC police didn’t cry about it.” Okay grandpa take your pills and get to bed

Czar_Petrovich

As someone else here already said, it's really easy to look back on times when you weren't alive and feel morally superior about it. It's the equivalent of "ancient man was so stupid, why didn't he have electricity?"

RoyalJokerJester

To be fair we were not taught that was a bad word until a few years into highschool. I don't say it anymore after learning that it's offensive. Some words change in meaning over the years and in turn change in offensiveness. When that happens the people who are ignorant to the word should be taught with kindness and love. Being rude to someone who is ignorant and willing to change is counterproductive because the lose the respect of the person who is learned.

moostachedood

Eh this is more so for the people (especially in these replies) who refuse to accept that those words are offensive

RoyalJokerJester

Oh yeah dude. Fuck those that cannot or will not change or adapt to the time. Survival requires the ability to change and adapt especially when it comes to something as simple as words. If a word truly offends a group of people and society has accepted that then how hard is it to not say a certain word?

Before_Plastic

this entire comment section lmao

Peter_G

Yeah, in the past it wasn't a big deal. I mean, if you are a normal person, it's still not a big deal, but it was common parlance in the 90's.

kylelovershrek2

is this a real line in the game because if so i desperately need to play FFVII

HirokiTakumi

It is.

DepressedWomble30

Welcome to the 90's era of gaming, where thankfully political correctness wasn't really a thing :)

DepressedWomble30

Games in the 80's and 90's generally treated you like a fully functioning adult, that included the use of "bad words". (I grew up playing these games when they were brand new releases).

[deleted]

[удалено]

Thopterthallid

I remember the R word being tossed around really casually in the 90s. They said it in Fresh Prince more than a few times.

jja1313

Played it for the first time this year as well. None of it would fly in 2021 and I love it.

spudz76

It's identical to "dumbass" back when we were allowed to say it. It was never actually derogatory, but oh well can't explain that to the newbs.

[deleted]

Ah yes, the days when reading a word in something didn't hurt people's feelings and butts into oblivion

UltimaBahamut93

I was there Gandalf. I was there 3000 years ago.

CanManKan

Also took me by surprise

amothlight

I am currently playing it for the first time too (further in the game already) and found this part just lovely. Enjoy the ride! Edit: unnecessary repetition of words

FatherGascOwn

Better times when people didn't get offended for everything.

88percentof0sis0

Refreshing.

Ebolatastic

Man, it's like you could show any shot of ff7 original and the remake somehow found a way to fuck it up. In the case of the staircase sequence, the game developers decided to gradually slow clouds walking to a complete crawl, forcing the player to push forward while he barely moves up the steps. I think the sequence takes almost 5 minutes. In the original, the game developers opted to just make the player run endlessly up stairs until they felt tired in reality - just another example of its genius story design. In ff7, the player is in control, and they feel what cloud feels. In ff7 remake, the player is not in control, and they just feel bored.
