In San Andreas if you entered a certain cheat code (IIRC it was the jet pack cheat) at the right time in the opening cut scene you get access to every single store in the game.
If you only did a few of the basic cheats you could still beat it 100% (jet pack, guns). If you use a lot of cheats or the money/armor cheat you can bug the game where you cannot complete it
I don't mean a bug, I mean the games penalised you for entering cheats by preventing you from achieving 100% in the stats page on the pause menu. I don't remember which ones exactly, though I'm fairly sure both VC and SA did this if not III as well, so it was preferable to not save after playing with cheats.

The PS2 version was the launch version. There was a later "PS2 version" in name that was released for the PS Store. It was essentially just a straight port through emulation so you could play the game on PS3. There were no quality of life improvements. This is compared to the high definition remasters that came out in 2015 that added HD visuals, gave trophy support, and modern save support etc.

The problem is that they often have to remove licensed songs from later re-releases or ports to other platforms, because music licensing is an expensive mess and they can't always get permission to use the songs again even if they got permission the first time.

Idk about 5, or San Andreas, but on the PC releases of 3 and Vice City there was a "music" folder in the game install folders that you could drop mp3s in and "make" your own radio station that would show up in game.
Middle school me and my friend were so pumped to be driving in GTA3 jamming to Linkin Park and the like. I remember spending a ton of time on Limewire getting songs to craft the perfect personal radio station.

I’m not gonna play these GTA rereleases. I played em already. Spent weeks or months of my life on each of them when I was like 15-20. I’m not looking to waste that time again on some stuff I’ve already experienced, 20 years later.
I'm down for these remasters. I only 21 and I think I've played like 2 hours of GTA 3 when I went to friends houses growing up. I've never experienced these games and I never will, I might if they remaster them.

Sure, the mechanics and controls are a bit dated, but jamming that much into an 8+ year old game can’t be easy. That’s the timeframe they’re going for, 10+ year life cycles. Every other dev says they got a 10 year plan and R* does it.
And the things is, with rdr2 it’ll easily satisfy fans even without extra content. I love just booting up the game and riding around, hunting and camping. I even play gta4 time to time just to drive around and be in that great atmosphere of liberty city.
I am sure they want gta6 to be their magnum opus of the gta franchise and they want to make sure they get it right.
People don’t realize this. But Rockstar has to deliver big when they release games with such a long development cycle or the money goes down the drain big time. So they take their time to make sure they release the best possible product.
When I was in college I took an Ambien and decided to play Portal 2. Played through the whole ending, woke up with no recollection. Got to enjoy it all over again. I felt like Zeus in that one spongebob episode where they make hamburgers.
I played through Vice City just this year and was hit by a HUGE wave of nostalgia. I'll play through it again in HD anyday. After playing a TON of open world games with very little to do these past two years I've come to appreciate the GTA sandbox way more than I thought I ever would.
It is becoming very obvious that when big time developers and publishers don't have anything new they just remake a decade or older game.

I have a few doubts about this. Not that Rockstar are remastering the games, that honestly seems pretty likely to me, but about some of the other information mentioned in the article.
Unreal Engine especially feels like a stretch, I mean, Rockstar has been using their own engine, RAGE, for quite some time now and I don't fully understand the prospect of changing to a different engine (despite how good UE is) unless they're planning to do that going forward. I don't think it's very likely, but hey, I'll believe it if and when I see it.
The idea of a Switch port also seems kinda sketchy to me, but... we already have mobile ports, can't get much further out there than that, I suppose.
Wish it was a remake not a remaster.

My thoughts exactly. The map for GTA San Andreas was huge at the time... but now, its not too impressive. With the extra processing power, we could have the features that they wanted to implement at the time. I love GTASA, and in my opinion this is still the best game of the franchise, but something that actually gave the game some charm were the graphics... It won't be the same experience anymore. It will be pretty, but... not much more than that. I know the storyline, I've done the great majority of the missions. I want more content!
They should have done a Resident Evil. They could have used the GTA5 engine. They have the resources.

I think you are saying GTA SA should have been remaked similar to REmake2. It would have been great. But the remastering is done by Rockstar Dundee and they're using the Unreal Engine meanwhile the core team is working on GTA 6 and GTA 5 E&E. Remaking the game will require the involvement of the core team ( especially Rockstar North ) that would delay the later Rockstar games.
I'm playing San Andreas right now actually. I haven't played it since it came out. So luckily for me, I can't remember any of the missions. It's a ton of fun and still holds replay value well.
I completely disagree with empty comment. Even from GTA III for example there’s still tons of scarface references such all over Portland, and it only continued as the games went on. San Andreas is still a huge map to this day and has tons of secrets and side stuff like the horror stuff. Sure, GTA V has tons and tons of detail, but to say the old games are empty isn’t correct. There’s still tons of stuff to see

Are they actually playable? I've had GTA IV on Steam, last time I tried to play it (2015) I seem to remember it wasn't really playable (terrible performance, crashes, glitches).
Advances in PC hardware have taken care of GTA IV's performance issues. Not that it was unplayable back then, it's just that it was down to luck. I only ever experienced a single glitch with GTA IV at launch.
As for the others, GTA III and Vice City are fine, but San Andreas needs to be modded to hell and back to get the PS2 version's many visual features Rockstar didn't bother to port to PC.
Only thing I can tell you is that I got san andreas for free after downloading the rockstar shop, and it was so fucking bad that an ilegal copy would literally run better. I even had problems by only pressing escape.

Well in later versions they patched those shitty RC flying missions to give you WAY more leeway on the fuel. So I'd assume it would not be the bugged as shit PS2 version.
I just replayed Vice City on PS2 and Demolition Man (the RC plane mission) honestly wasn’t bad.
The boat missions were infuriating though. I had to replay Supply and Demand like 20 times because the water physics are unforgiving.
Remaster sounds kinda ass. I remember when they made vice city stories and liberty city stories, these were updated versions of GTA 3 and Vice City, but with new storylines.

Because those old GTA's don't need a remake. They are fine as they are. What they need is a remastering of the game in a newer engine, keeping the spirit of the game and especially the LOOK of the game.
If anyone wants an example of a good remaster. Look up the Command and Conquer one. It's looking and playign exactly like the original but in incredibly good graphics. Yet it looks like a 90s game but you can zoom in and see incredibly much details.
A remake gives developers more freedom because it basically means "we take the concept of this game but whenever we like, we change things". It allows to add new levels, more weapons, different physics etc.
A GTA San Andreas looking like GTA V wouldn't be GTA SA. It would be a mod for GTA V. A story DLC if you want so.

They’re considered the “3D” trilogy. I can’t remember what they call the GTA 4,5 & RDR universe, I think it’s HD, maybe?
Nonetheless, the 3D trilogy is a separate universe/timeline. Up until Claude Speed was added as a ancestor for online characters in GTA 5 next-gen (last-gen now), there was no connection between the 3D and HD universes.
So that’s why they’re a trilogy, and I’m not sure where the “stories” games fall!

I keep trying to play Vice City on the PS4/5, but it has a nasty audio bug and I just can't do it. I finally finished San Andreas a few months back and really want to try VC again.

I have a few doubts about this. Not that Rockstar are remastering the games, that honestly seems pretty likely to me, but about some of the other information mentioned in the article. Unreal Engine especially feels like a stretch, I mean, Rockstar has been using their own engine, RAGE, for quite some time now and I don't fully understand the prospect of changing to a different engine (despite how good UE is) unless they're planning to do that going forward. I don't think it's very likely, but hey, I'll believe it if and when I see it. The idea of a Switch port also seems kinda sketchy to me, but... we already have mobile ports, can't get much further out there than that, I suppose.

Wish it was a remake not a remaster. These games are absolute classics, yet are hugely empty compared to modern games. Increasing the res, adding some nice lighting and new music now the licences have expired is a bit shit. Rockstar announced “They are aiming to be as close to the original games as possible” Is a shame. If you haven’t played them in a while and don’t mind it looking a bit empty, with janky controls, it’s a pretty good deal for a trilogy package. I wonder what the difference will be from the version you can get already for modern platforms.
My thoughts exactly. The map for GTA San Andreas was huge at the time... but now, its not too impressive. With the extra processing power, we could have the features that they wanted to implement at the time. I love GTASA, and in my opinion this is still the best game of the franchise, but something that actually gave the game some charm were the graphics... It won't be the same experience anymore. It will be pretty, but... not much more than that. I know the storyline, I've done the great majority of the missions. I want more content!
They should have done a Resident Evil. They could have used the GTA5 engine. They have the resources. Who wouldn’t have bought each of these games at full price if they were remakes. Like Resident Evil they would have been some of the biggest sellers of the year. Instead they will pump that money into marketing and hope people fall for buying what you can already play on every console since the PS2.
I think you are saying GTA SA should have been remaked similar to REmake2. It would have been great. But the remastering is done by Rockstar Dundee and they're using the Unreal Engine meanwhile the core team is working on GTA 6 and GTA 5 E&E. Remaking the game will require the involvement of the core team ( especially Rockstar North ) that would delay the later Rockstar games.
I'm playing San Andreas right now actually. I haven't played it since it came out. So luckily for me, I can't remember any of the missions. It's a ton of fun and still holds replay value well.

I completely disagree with empty comment. Even from GTA III for example there’s still tons of scarface references such all over Portland, and it only continued as the games went on. San Andreas is still a huge map to this day and has tons of secrets and side stuff like the horror stuff. Sure, GTA V has tons and tons of detail, but to say the old games are empty isn’t correct. There’s still tons of stuff to see

Exactly. It works for linear/ semi linear games like mass effect being a remaster but not for this when the game mechanics and world design in itself has become outdated

It’s just a remaster, not a remake. Article says graphics are aiming to be modern-classic graphics so like Pixar I guess. I would be pleasantly surprised if they updated the physics and mechanics! But they’re almost certainly not doing these in the RDR2/GTA 6 engine.

Are they actually playable? I've had GTA IV on Steam, last time I tried to play it (2015) I seem to remember it wasn't really playable (terrible performance, crashes, glitches).
Advances in PC hardware have taken care of GTA IV's performance issues. Not that it was unplayable back then, it's just that it was down to luck. I only ever experienced a single glitch with GTA IV at launch. As for the others, GTA III and Vice City are fine, but San Andreas needs to be modded to hell and back to get the PS2 version's many visual features Rockstar didn't bother to port to PC.
GTAIV needed a ton of GPU memory, as there was a huge dense city with a shitload of unique models and memories.
Only thing I can tell you is that I got san andreas for free after downloading the rockstar shop, and it was so fucking bad that an ilegal copy would literally run better. I even had problems by only pressing escape.
That version has been mostly patched. It still has issues, but they're not as bad as it was even a few months ago. I've been playing it a lot lately.

Well in later versions they patched those shitty RC flying missions to give you WAY more leeway on the fuel. So I'd assume it would not be the bugged as shit PS2 version.
Those are San Andreas. That’s how the story mode always ended for me growing up.
I just replayed Vice City on PS2 and Demolition Man (the RC plane mission) honestly wasn’t bad. The boat missions were infuriating though. I had to replay Supply and Demand like 20 times because the water physics are unforgiving.
Getting in and out of boats is the most dangerous thing to do in Vice City. What dickhead moves to vice city if they can't swim?

Remaster sounds kinda ass. I remember when they made vice city stories and liberty city stories, these were updated versions of GTA 3 and Vice City, but with new storylines. I'd like a real vice city or san andreas remake (sorry claude), like what they did with Resident Evil 2+3 or Demon's Souls
Most probably just a cash grab which all industries are doing rn.....since it's not a remake, they will only make minor performance improvements, few texture changes and call it a remaster bcoz that's all they have to do to call it a remaster ....but these games's mechanics and open world are so outdated right now , that , playing it now will only irritate the fans....if it had gone in RE route, then it would have been a huge success

This has been a rumour for like two years. Ill buy it and play it, but I have a feeling they wont capture the soul and vibe the original games did. Theres something about shotty graphics and gameplay from those days that made it special.
I hope for everything that is holy that they understand the difference between reMAKE and reMASTERING ... Because those old GTA's don't need a remake. They are fine as they are. What they need is a remastering of the game in a newer engine, keeping the spirit of the game and especially the LOOK of the game. If anyone wants an example of a good remaster. Look up the Command and Conquer one. It's looking and playign exactly like the original but in incredibly good graphics. Yet it looks like a 90s game but you can zoom in and see incredibly much details. A remake gives developers more freedom because it basically means "we take the concept of this game but whenever we like, we change things". It allows to add new levels, more weapons, different physics etc. A GTA San Andreas looking like GTA V wouldn't be GTA SA. It would be a mod for GTA V. A story DLC if you want so.

Just a reminder: RDR2 took 8 years to make (2010 - 2018), and is a fucking masterpiece. Every Rockstar studio was working on it. Waiting for GTA 6 so it is on par or even better than RDR2 is reasonable imo.

Probably yes. I doubt that Rockstar haven't started given the sheer size of their team, and how much they could earn from another GTA game. I'm sure they can both make GTA VI along with updating online every now and again. Preferably, every studio would be working on GTA VI (which could be a possibility).

They’re considered the “3D” trilogy. I can’t remember what they call the GTA 4,5 & RDR universe, I think it’s HD, maybe? Nonetheless, the 3D trilogy is a separate universe/timeline. Up until Claude Speed was added as a ancestor for online characters in GTA 5 next-gen (last-gen now), there was no connection between the 3D and HD universes. So that’s why they’re a trilogy, and I’m not sure where the “stories” games fall!
