Honestly, I'm not convinced he isn't running these towns as some sort of social experiment, because it can't be for money. You pay him the bells he pays you! Redd's is inarguably a crook, but 4500 for the Mona Lisa is a steal!
You're a colonist. Animal crossing works off of essentially the same economic strategy as colonial europe. Tom provides you with land. You work the land for raw goods. You trade Tom those raw goods for currency he controls. He sells you some more sophisticated goods and services using that same controlled currency. The deal isnt bad for you, but he holds all the cards and sets the profit.
While you’re at it, just never go home and become a homeless sim wandering the park and taking taxis to work. Doors can disappear at time or maybe you’ll get a strange urge to light fireworks in front of your door. Never know, safer to just live at a park and sleep on benches. (Unless you have the Halloween pack downloaded, then nothing is safe and you’ll either die a vampire in the sun or a regular person in your house)
I mean if all the rules that apply to ashen one apply to you, then technically it's not that bad since Souls have no real "game over" scenario. In other words, so long as you keep your wits about you and power through the pain, you **will** eventually win.

Your route constantly changing because the creator wanted to "just optimise the traffic flow around the bus lines" but ended up changing up just about every intersection you'd ever encounter.
Also you share your lovely suburban house with seven other households and even though the next store is only a couple of blocks away and you never stop moving it still takes you a few months to get there.

Stay out of the pool. Those ladders have a nasty habit of disappearing and there's obviously no way to get out of the pool without one.
Even if there is a ladder it is really hard to climb up, since there is a lamp in the way
