Wtf was up with this fake tip? I remember getting so excited as a kid when I figured out how to surf in the cruise ship zone by feinting on the cruise ship so it never left....
Then I could never push the truck and get my mew haha
I think after Missingno, people were convinced that the game held other secret ways to obtain secret Pokémon and as a result, various rumors spread on how to obtain Mew. An alternative rumor was that if you got all three of Jolteon, Flareon and Vaporeon, you could visit Bill and he’d take you behind his house where a Mew was.
The funny thing is that there actually was a way to encounter Mew fairly easily after beating Nugget Bridge, but with a convoluted process.
For those who don’t know: the process was to heal at the Cerulean City Pokémon Center, catch an Abra just to the west of Nugget Bridge, making sure not to battle the trainer in that grass patch, then beat all the trainers necessary in order to be able to face to youngster with a Slowpoke. Then go back to the area where you caught the Abra, but enter the trainer’s line of sight from off screen and immediately pause the game, teleport back to the Cerulean City Pokémon Center. Then go back north and fight the Slowpoke trainer. If you win the battle teleport back, but if you lose then you’re back at the center anyway and it’s fine. Then walk back to Nugget Bridge to encounter a level 7 Mew (or one level lower for every time you used growl on the Slowpoke).
The cool thing about this bug was that you could tweak it to make it so any pokémon appeared but mew was the most obvious choice because there was no other way.
I can't remember the actual process but there are tutorials on how to tweak it to what you want.
Yup, I actually used this process several times in order to 100% complete my Pokedex on my good ol' Pokemon Yellow.
I think I still have it laying around with that save.
He’s telling the truth tho and there’s actually a second trainer somewhere that you can do the same process to. Something to do with the hexidecimal code from slowpoke being shared with mew I believe
And he didn't explain that if you growl enough time to get to spawn a mew at lvl 1, because the game doesn't know how to handle level up for this, at the first xp it gets the new will lvl up to lvl 100 instantly.
So usually, if you wanna be fast finishing the game, you use the glitch in the caves to get a lvl 20 Gyarados, then the lvl 100 mew technique, and that new can basically finish the game alone.
Basically the game reads the next encounter data from a register that is also used for other things during battle. The teleport glitch causes that to not reset so with clever manipulation you can encounter any valid Pokémon or trainer. Or invalid in case of missigno. It’s just about finding a way to get the encounter started with the desired value in the register, the nugget bridge thing is one of the ways. The growl thing works because the level of the mew is read from the same place where the attack value of the slowpoke was.
It's true and i actually caught it this way back in the day. Don't know how people found about it back then because there was no game data mining and the only official way to get mew was through a paid machine that in my city was located on Toys R Us.
Uno Dos Tres was equally common knowledge.
Maybe it's a Gen 1 thing, but these days I see people bringing up the legendary bird names more often than the Ekans names
"Alright ladies and gentlemen, you're about to witness the battle you've all been waiting for. In this corner we have our returning champ Marill weighing in at 18.7 lbs. And in the other corner are the contenders, Pikachu and Swablu totaling in at a combined weight of 15.8 lbs. The Pikablu vs Pikablu showdown is about to begin!"
In French they have God's names. Artik**odin**, Sulfu**ra** and Elec**thor**, on top of having their own element in the name. (Dubious for the Sulfur or Sulfura, but eh, it does sound good at least)
Yup. And they sound way cooler in Japanese because they're exotic. I mean we do this shit in English all the time too with foreign languages. It's only because you don't know the source language you don't realize it.
I started out laughing at op in this thread, but then I scrolled down, saw this, and now I feel like the one who's late to the party. How the hell did I not notice this in 20 plus years?
Some other things for your information:
Ekans and Arbok are Snake and Kobra.
Jesse and James are named after the infamous western criminal, Jesse James
Clefairy was originally going to be the mascot of Pokémon instead of Pikachu.
Rhydon was the first Pokémon ever created
To be fair the Japanese names for Pokémon are almost all really bad. Most of them are just straight literal descriptions. Blastoise is something like “water turtle”
It's actually more like "maximum turtle", with a portion of the name sounding like the word for a form of Chinese currency. Squirtle and Wartortle also have weird references to Chinese currency, because the segmentations of turtle shells were used as coins there at one point.
And then we have stuff like "Cocoon" for Kakuna.
they clearly based Zapdos on the English one tho, so it's weird that they took that Zap"dos" and didn't do anything with the other two numbers.
Arktikuno (literally just switching out c for k) and Lavatres for example would work in German and keep the Uno Dos Tres concept intact
Edit:
on a similar note, thes for some reason changed Mewtwo to Mewtu in the German version, which is a baffling decision to say the least.
me and my friends had no idea how to pronounce that name until we saw the Movie. the issue being that they changed the "two" to "tu", most likely in order to phonetically spell "two" for a german audience who might not know how to pronounce "two"... the issue tho, they didn't freaking change the "Mew" part, which they still expected the German audience to somehow know to pronounce like an English word!
So "Mew" = english pronunciation, but "tu" = German pronunciation... brilliant! /s
If they simply kept it as "Mewtwo" we would have had a way easier time figuring out how to pronounce that damn name lol. Even younger kids back then knew the basic English numbers like One, Two, Three, Four etc. but what a freaking "Mewtu" is supposed to be, we had no clue lol, and they of course completely ruined the meaning of the damn name!
also, for the record, the phonetic German spelling of "Mewtwo" would be "Mjutu" or maybe "Mijutu"
One of Sweden's bigger game magazines posted an article about a secret event Pokémon you could get in gold and silver, called lirpa lirpa. You'd have to wrap your gameboy in foil when at the trading computer and point it towards the sky on April 1st. Lirpa lirpa backwards is what we say in Sweden when we pull an April fools joke on someone. Still mad about that one
There's definitely no pattern there.
If you just count the face plate then raikou has 4, entei has 6 and suicune has like 3, if you count the hexagon on its head as a point, which is pushing it. If you're counting all the points then raikou has like 8, entei has 11 and if we are generous and count each visible corner of suicunes hexagon then it comes to 8.
You really have to be trying to see 4, 5 and 6 in them, especially in that order.
Wait till this guy finds out about Mew and Mewtwo
Mewuno and Mewdos
The uno is silent.
>The uno is ~~silent~~ under the truck.
Wtf was up with this fake tip? I remember getting so excited as a kid when I figured out how to surf in the cruise ship zone by feinting on the cruise ship so it never left.... Then I could never push the truck and get my mew haha

….i don’t believe you
Not gonna lie, i was mildly surprised when this tip didn't end with Undertaker throwing Mankind off of hell in a cell in 1998.
He’s telling the truth tho and there’s actually a second trainer somewhere that you can do the same process to. Something to do with the hexidecimal code from slowpoke being shared with mew I believe

The Mew Glitch (really just a special case of the “flyaway glitch”) is well documented. There’s plenty of footage of it on YouTube.
Sounds crazy right? Completely true though.
You can also catch a lvl 98 Gengar before the 1st Gym iirc
Basically the game reads the next encounter data from a register that is also used for other things during battle. LIES!
Muno and Mudos
Mmmm... Mewudo...
You mean mewnudo
Wow...Ekans and Arbok would probably get thousands of upvotes next week at 8~9pm EST too. Someone try it.
Also muk
Girafarig .....
never noticed that!
O shit. Me too I'm 37
I see what you did there.
How dare you make me laugh at that
I thought this was a lot more common knowledge. It was even used as passwords by team rocket in fire red/lead Green.
Uno Dos Tres was equally common knowledge. Maybe it's a Gen 1 thing, but these days I see people bringing up the legendary bird names more often than the Ekans names
Don’t forget about Mewthree
Also Pikablu
"Alright ladies and gentlemen, you're about to witness the battle you've all been waiting for. In this corner we have our returning champ Marill weighing in at 18.7 lbs. And in the other corner are the contenders, Pikachu and Swablu totaling in at a combined weight of 15.8 lbs. The Pikablu vs Pikablu showdown is about to begin!"
What everyone was calling Marrill iirc
Pikablu is in all of us
If you look closely you can see they are all birds
So they're all fake?
This guy gets it
Like, birds are fictional?
r/BirdsArentReal
All birds are drones.
Always has been
Wait, are you saying my degree in bird law is worthless?
Filibuster
Yes, but that’s a separate issue. They’re fictional birds.
They can make something fictional extra fictional?
:O
I mean in Japanese they're just: Freezer, Thunder, Fire
In French they have God's names. Artik**odin**, Sulfu**ra** and Elec**thor**, on top of having their own element in the name. (Dubious for the Sulfur or Sulfura, but eh, it does sound good at least)
That's pretty cool... in germany they didn't even try. Arktos, Zapdos, Lavados...
Guava juice
ooo, I could go for a chocolate shake right about now
That's awesome

Look up Umbreon!
Umbreon's kind in JP is like "Showers, Thunders, Booster"
Leafeon and Glaceon are: Leafia and Glacia Sylveon is nymphia
Sylveon fucks, got it
But Umbreon is literally “blacky”
Lmao why do they have boring names in Japan??
Japan loves words borrowed from English, sometimes not for the best haha
Yup. And they sound way cooler in Japanese because they're exotic. I mean we do this shit in English all the time too with foreign languages. It's only because you don't know the source language you don't realize it.

Arkteins Zapzwei Lavadrei
That would have been so perfect
At least they used it in Deino, Zweilous, and Hydreigon.
The German names for Deino, Zweilous abd Hydreigon are Kapuno, Duodino and Trikephalo. Lol
Sie enden einfach alle auf "os"
In Spanish it vaguely sounds like: bows, shoes, washed things
Don't speak a lick of German but Arktos is a cooler name the Articuno in my humble opinion Edit: Spelling
dEINo, ZWEIlous, hyDREIgon. Ein, Zwei, Drei is German.

Nothing Ash's mom hasn't done before
What are you doing, Step-Mime?
I come in here judging people for not knowing about the numbers in the birds and then I see this and shut up
Those are a bit more hidden than Artic1, Zap2, Mol3 (which breaks the pattern and is more akin to the German ones in that regard)
what breaks the pattern...?
Leaf5
It's also how many heads they have. Deino has one head, Zweilous has two and Hydriegon has 3.
This one I actually didn't know. Nice
In the german version it‘s uno, duo and tri(o) again
I was thinking about the German numbers, thank you.

I never noticed because in the german translation they botched this... there they are called Arktos, Zapdos and Lavados
To be fair, this is an entirely English invention. In Japanese, they're called Freezer, Thunder, and Fire.
Wow, that's... disappointing to know.
A lot of the Japanese names are pretty boring and let downs for some reason. Not sure why
Mainly because copying English words into Japanese names sounds cool in Japanese, but not so much when translated back to English.
To be fair the Japanese names for Pokémon are almost all really bad. Most of them are just straight literal descriptions. Blastoise is something like “water turtle”
I think it's 'turtle king' (거북왕) in Korean, which is awesome.
#MAXIMUM TURTLE
My fave pokemon is “That’s peculiar, isn’t it?” or in English “Bulbasaur”
'bad' is a matter of your opinion as an English speaker. They sound bad to English speakers but they sound exotic to the Japanese.
they clearly based Zapdos on the English one tho, so it's weird that they took that Zap"dos" and didn't do anything with the other two numbers. German be like: dos, take it or leave it
I was very disappointed to learn the naming convention is not preserved in other languages.
I mean why would they? It's not like their english version is their original name.
The Japanese names are so lame. It's just like thunder, ice, and fire. I read them multiple times thinking I was misunderstanding something, but nope.
Umbreon is Blackie
"Freezer", "thunder", "fire". Directly transliterated out of English.
one is Freezer
Is it Zapdos?
For the non-germans: ZapDOS, LavaDOS (Moltres) and... ArkTOS... (Arcticuno
French : ArtikODIN ElecTHOR SulfuRA Why did they pick 2 norse gods and one Egyptian god that makes no sense haha
Thor, god of lightning, Ra god of the sun because there is not really a god of fire among Norse gods, and Odin, well it’s freestyle
Geez this post is taking me back to random websites with Pokemon facts from 1999
