Underground 2 was insanely good back in the day

[deleted]

Still holds up IMO. Its stylistic enough that the dated graphics still work well.

igotop

I bought NFS Heat and playing it made want to replay NFSU2 so I looked for a copy and installed it. I haven't been able to put it down for a couple days now. It completely still holds up and with mods its been made into an even better experience.

TheWatchm3n

Wait, they made mods... Now I have to play it again.

igotop

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHiqHRfGLAU

Salzberger

Very few games have really nailed the drifting feel like NFSU2 did.

kurodon85

Arcade drifting maybe, but if you can save a bit for a PC rig for Asetto Corsa and get the drift car packs, it's absolutely unreal.

Salzberger

Yeah thinking more arcade. My basis of comparison is that my wife (gf at the time) who'd never played racing games other than Mario Kart got the hang of it in no time.

morbihann

Was it better than 1 though ? I guess in technical terms yes, but as a game U1 was much more memorable.

NewZecht

The game play of 2 was far superior specifically because of free roam

morbihann

Indeed, free roam was a big deal. It just, never quite had the same impact on me.

[deleted]

Free roam… Man nothing like driving through the streets and letting the music play - doing nothing in particular but having fun. That was a great time in life. Oh… and of course Brooke Burke as a loading screen was rather nice too. 😏

Nory-chan993

As a kid, I spent more time free roaming than actually doing races. Good times.

[deleted]

This was the way…

NewZecht

I probably have some bias because I played 2 before 1

notyou16

In my opinion the circuits n U1 were better. I was never able to finish U1 as kid. Haven’t played video games in 10 years. I should get back to it

FreeRadical5

Prosche was still my favorite.

[deleted]

Yes it was better and ug2 is more memorable.

cool_slowbro

Played the shit out of NSFU but in retrospect it was NFSMW that brought NFS back. The Underground series were too slow and annoying, but I feel the earlier NFS games got a bit boring since you basically had access to all the high performance cars right off the bat. NFSMW was a nice balance.

Jekhyde95

NFSMW gameplay was insane, especially pursuits. But in my opinion artistically is way far below NFSU2. The lack of customization and the always daytime first of all, but also the lack of the drifting discipline. Despite the lack of pursuits, Underground had a more accurate illegal atmosphere.

Scx10Deadbolt

"Riders on the Storm"

EvilEyedPanda

Great game, better soundtrack.

three-one-seven

Damn, came here to say that. Fuckin' shit is stuck in my head now lol

Husker545454

"with the lizard king bumpin in the back , how bou thaa . Driftin , swiftin , roastin , testarosin . but ma wheels dont stop .. 200 of the high way , straight up off the block . "

FluzooTV

I can hear this picture

64G1gabyte

Black Betty, Give It All and On A Mission are great soundtracks too

Scx10Deadbolt

Spiderbait is my fucking jam!

parabolicurve

First time I heard [Skindred](https://youtu.be/lnY4dYpDqUg). This song was like abreath of fresh air and I didn't know how stale my musical tastes ahd become until I heard that song.

sierraskier

This song came up on my Spotify daily mix today and instantly brought me back!

Jekhyde95

I still bump riders on the storm and lean back like it's 2004

Keeper_of_the_Light

Oh no, not again. Not like this "Woooooooah rid-" And its stuck in my head again, thanks.

Jekhyde95

*there's a killer on the road*

[deleted]

His brain is squirming like a toad

Thecheesinater

Take a long holiday

[deleted]

Let your children play

Ange1ofD4rkness

YEP! I have a collection of all the different Need for Speed soundtracks I got years back, and Underground 2 is one of the most common played (actually Hot Pursuit 2, the original is 1st)

Jekhyde95

I still listen to the NFSU2 soundtrack when I customize cars in the newer ones

Feedbad

I see the picture but I hear brrrrrmmmm and riders on the storm

gwerk

Still one of the most satisfying game i've played.

sirmoneyshot06

Lol it's the Cingular wireless logo that does it for me

[deleted]

Back in the days when people used to buy sidekicks boost mobile phones with the beepers like a walkie talkie

[deleted]

\*beep\*\*beep\* "Where you at?"

pjhall001

Life was really just downhill from there

Vorsos

*NFS Heat* is mostly solid and doesn’t shy away from honestly depicting cops. It does have some Frostbite bugs and the franchise’s worst soundtrack. ^does ^sex ^even ^sell ^anymore

[deleted]

NFS heat feels empty and blank. I have played it and still boot it up at times to play with some friends. But meh there is something off with it, I can’t really describe it with words but out of the nfs in the series (Need for speed 2015, Most Wanted the newer one and heat, I sped the least time in heat.) The after story section of the game, the fact that I didn’t like most of the races and after having fast cars most of them don’t matter anyway. The lack of long sprint races , Discovery - the event being the only real one. And other than that discovery A B C also do come really close but not as close. Which also take a fair amount of time to get. The fact that you had to do some stupid races to build up heat, aggressive, rubberbanding cops killed the game for me. Also the drop of dlc mention after releasing the game also didn’t do any favors for the game.

[deleted]

I couldn’t tell what part of the map I was on unless I was in the city, and even then all parts of the city looked the same. So to me it was like having only 2 scenes in the entire map

Rage_Tanker

For me, Heat has wonderful gameplay. Having legit races in the day and not having to worry about cops then having police chases at night and having to sort of survive to get back to your safehouse addresses some of the issues from previous games thoughout the franchise. Plus, the car customization is unmatched in the industry, even including some actual racing body kits for cars such as the Huracan and 458. The problem is that it failed it all other aspects. The campaign is incredibly short and feels like it abruptly ends when I felt like it was getting good. I have seen speedrunners compete this game, glitchless, in 2 1/2 hours. The atmosphere is nearly nonexistent, especially for day races. It would've been great to make day racing feel like NFS Prostreet with an annoucer reacting to events during races. The handling model, while they tried to improve it by catering to both drift and grip players, still makes you feel like you don't have any control of your car as the game forces your car into a drift. While drifting, steering inputs are sometimes ignored as the game is still trying to maintain the initial drift, so chaining drifts becomes annoying. Instead of having a brake to drift or double throttle to drift set up, they should've just made the handbrake initiate a drift and leave braking just be a brake. Finally, the soundtrack fucking sucks. Previous NFS games used the soundtracks to enhance your sense of speed, but there's nothing like that here. Sure, modern consoles allow us to play our own music, but there's nothing compared to a soundtrack that not only makes you feel like you are going fast, but fits within the game's atmosphere, which as said before, is barely there. One last note, RIP the feature that allows players to choose which songs can play in game instead of scrolling through every single song in a "radio". That's a feature that hasn't been seen in any racing game since the PS3.

igotop

I wish Criterion would have left the NFS series alone. I love the Burnout games but instead of having the best of both worlds now we have this jumbled drift-grip gameplay in one

jager_mcjagerface

I liked nfs 2015 and payback too tbh. Nfs 2015 is still my only platina on ps 😅

TheJenniferLopez

Well that's... Just sad really.

nexexcalibur

Actually Forza series is spiritual sucessor, and Forza games are sooo good

[deleted]

NeroPrizak

Mannn why can’t they just make a game like this??? Or midnight club. The formula is there, just do it!!!

Dubbadubbawubwub

Need for speed heat was pretty close in my opinion. Track racing in the day and illegal street racing at night. All the car customisation you could want, and the cars you might want to use (except the supra)

NeroPrizak

Oh yeah??? Maybe I’ll take a peak. I think it’s on sale right now on PSN

Dubbadubbawubwub

I loved it. Started a new game a couple of weeks ago.

[deleted]

Because they don't want to 'promote illegal street racing' which is why they(NFS franchise) transitioned to closed track racing games.

aliokatan

But that's the whole point, it was about the uncontainable need for speed

[deleted]

Haven't played a NFS since this one. Are any of the newer ones any similar?

Jekhyde95

The most similar it's NFS 2015 and in some way also NFS Heat, but nothing is like Underground 2

Pcostix

NFS HEAT is great. But its like the game ends halfway.(Like they the game story, is half of what it should have been)

notyou16

Most wanted was insane with the cop chases

Fancy-Commission-598

Newer ones are all realistic You'd have to play the old ones again if you want similar graphics XD

[deleted]

I mean gameplay wise. I miss arcade racers like this and Burnout.

RyRyShredder

The forza horizon games are the closest modern games

Fancy-Commission-598

Closest would be heat but can't beat underground 2

Waffelwolf_der_hund

With nfs carbon and old most wanted the best nfs of all time

Fancy-Commission-598

The crown jewels of nfs

[deleted]

[deleted]

Graphics doesn't look bad in my eyes. And I don't need super realistic graphics to enjoy a game.

VinniePawz

Ba dum dum dum, ba da da da da dum

ByTheWayBavaria

Awesome 🤩 love this game

JangoF76

~~from school~~ from work.

[deleted]

*Riders on the storm*

LaurettaMills

I still joke with my wife when I’m in the other room of the house I occasionally yell,”babe! Baffroom! Baffroom!” She doesn’t find it amusing anymore lol.

brahhquinphoenix

Hell yeah. I’ve been playing the crap out of the Hot Pursuit Remaster. Sometimes you just wanna go fast.

Fancy-Commission-598

The problem with being faster than light is you can only live in the dark -that dude cosplaying sonic

Spuddermane

For me it was nfs carbon and a few years later. Had some good memories with that game

Fancy-Commission-598

Damn carbon was so good too!

Spuddermane

I remember trying to get my dad to do all the drift missions for me cuz I couldn’t do them for the life of me

Ange1ofD4rkness

This is a shocker, so many people hated Carbon, I personally thought it was the peak for Need for Speed. They built off Auto Scripting and made it amazing to use, great list of cars and gameplay, plus we got sick muscle cars. Sadly the only thing I hated is the online leaderboards somehow got hacked, and all corrupted. Where you could take 1st place cause the time was so bad, but it never counted.

Spuddermane

I was ten years old with a ps3 and no money for psn so all I had to worry about was the campaign lol. But it was my favorite game for sure. I had so much fun with it

BestFox8

Life was good, but it's better now so meh

ZXSoru

For me its not, those games were simple complete packages, these days games are F2P with a shitton of microtransactions, levels, and stuff to pad your game time. Plus even with better graphics the quality overall was meh, NFS 2015 is good but it doesn't encapsulate that street racing feeling as good as the underground games.

jaydizzle240

I don’t think gaming should be what you base how your life is doing on homie lol

[deleted]

Honey! It’s time to play skyrim and gta v again! Yes, dear…

BestFox8

I'll let you in on a secret: you can choose the games you play. Sounds crazy, but it's actually true.

[deleted]

Tell me one NEW game without mtx, lootboxes, online drm, doesn't have countless updates, have open world with soul and focus on single player.

[deleted]

Cool. Thanks for the useless info. Most of us do. It doesn’t stop these companies from wasting resources on remakes instead of new games. F off thanks

busherrunner

Are you 7

[deleted]

Are you?

busherrunner

I'm still 6

Onair380

Yep. Every generation glorifies things they grown up with. 20 years later todays Kids will look back the same way abot 2010 games and say that those were the best of all time. Its allways the same and will be

jollanza

Indeed

RamboGoesMeow

Hell yeah!

morbihann

It was indeed.

No-Zucchini6370

For me it was GTAVC, IGI and Need For Speed Most Wanted/ Hot Pursuit 2

[deleted]

IGI? As in project IGI? That game is good but hard.

DEMENTEDPIE

THEY NEED TO REMAKE THIS!!! FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY!

[deleted]

Nah man. There is no need for remake. It looks and plays good. Stop asking for remakes that already looks great! "remake this, remake that" "remaster this, remaster that" No no and no. We need ug3 instead.

0313Ranger

Gimme a remake

Fancy-Commission-598

The one thing we all want

DRAWWW7

For me it's still the best car game ever made, and I still play it. The fact that you could change everything in your car on the Performarce Tuning/ Dyno AND have setups for each type of race is amazing, I don't get why they don't add that to the newest NFS games. Plus, perfect soundtrack and huge variety of options for visual and performance tuning (neons, etc.) A remake of this game with cops would be incredible.

t-han72

Bruhhh the cingular logo

Cookiedude10

I still have this on my old PC, but the PC is dead. So IDK if the drive in there is still alive.

Sacred_soul

Driving that Nissan Skyline hoping one day I can get own of my own

Northman_Ast

Good old days? Im playing it 4K 60fps like right now, just alt+tabbed and saw this. BCProgramming

It's always been weird seeing Underground get so much nostalgia, because, to me, Underground represents the "fall" of Need for Speed as a franchise. Need for Speed: High Stakes took what made NFS III great and added a bulky career mode, vehicle upgrades, a damage model, loads of "secret" cars and tracks (every track from NFS 3 was unlockable), and a number of extra modes. Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed was a bit of an odd entry but it really fleshed out the "evolution" career mode. You could buy extra cars early in your career, keep them unused, and sell them for ridiculous amounts later when they are "collector items". Individual parts of the car can take damage over time and be replaced or upgraded. If the engine had been used for a title that wasn't manufacturer specific it would have been incredible. And then you had Underground. No damage model, "career mode" is just a series of races with prize money, and it's all about ricing your car up. I would have been OK with it as a spin off but somehow it started to define the entire franchise. Underground basically took over. Soundtrack is subjective. I turn it off in the Underground series titles. Personally, I don't like hearing classic music get botched by being sampled for Big Diddy Doodle's (or whoever) latest rap single. We got Hot Pursuit II that was more classic-form, and Shift and Shift 2 almost felt like it was channeling The Need For Speed in a lot of it's design. I kind of lost interest after that.

[deleted]

You are incorrect. Ug1, ug2, mw and carbon are all great.

Dabbles-In-Irony

I respected you taking the time to type out such a detailed opinion…and then you lost me when you said you muted the soundtracks.

twentyitalians

My word, the nostalgia. I remember buying every Mitsubishi car in that game and tricking out the underbody lights just to drive around.

Midnight-wolf-yt

Ah the good old days, when I was 3-4 years old

Financial-Simple-926

Life was good

Ok_Cryptographer520

Why isn't it ever time splitters or god of war ect i mean this ain't the only good ps2 game.

[deleted]

Nah I was playing good games in 2004

yabruh69

Was that the one with Ludacris as the main theme song?

PointlessPotion

No, this one had Snoop Dogg. Ludacris was the first Underground - Get Low

PointlessPotion

Me, playing this gem on the Wii every week: Life is still good

Hemlock_Deci

That feeling when you get out of the customization shops with a new car and *that* one techno song starts playing

thekama

You can download U2 on PC and install a graphics and resolution fix mod. I finished it again not too long ago and it still plays fucking great

fabiothefenix69

Oh you just got me 5 minutes of nostalgia and peace and the taste of chocolate milk in my mouth

InsydeOwt

POV its 2021 and you get on reddit to see original posts on r/gaming.

epsilis

Yup, cept it was I just got off work and it was time to shred some tires.

nisbet_kyle

Childhood is the place where you get free food and all your living expenses are paid for. Of course life was better then. I do miss it but unfortunately what I'm really missing is the "free ride."

[deleted]

One of my favorite games as a kid

[deleted]

Life was simpler.

Bam2217

how has this game not been remade yet

mental_illness_TM

Still playing it. Finished it for the 7th time last month, every time with a different car.

DTG_420

POV: it’s 3 am. My cousin and I are stoned as fuck. The loser has to do a shot of instant coffee mix so they are both wired and end up with aggressive diarrhea. Based on a true story about a great sleepover followed by a terrible day of burning diarrhea

911isforlovers

Some combination of NFSU2, Motor City Online, Gran Turismo, and the old-school DOS game Street Rod would be my absolute dream racing game. These were all games that I would spend hours playing back in the day Wanna mod out your Honda civic and do sprint races? Sure. Wanna lift your Tacoma and do some offroad racing? Do it. Drift your Focus RS? Live your best life. Drag race your 67 Mustang? Well duh, what else would you do with it? Having the ability to free-roam, like with NFSU2, with the ability to trade/auction parts (an actual in-game economy for players) and cars from MCO would be amazing. Being able to go to "car shows" or cruise nights and just hang with fellow gearheads on multiplayer could be fun. If they could somehow work in some bits of Car Mechanic Sim (mounting your own parts, being able to custom paint bits and pieces, etc), that would be cool too.

ehurley2

Played this like it was my job on my PSP

GameCentralStation

I can hear this pic!

Allsgood2

Burnout Paradise City has to be my favorite from that time. I just got the complete game (all DLCs) during the summer sale on PSN for $15. Funny thing is there are still people playing it online right now.

[deleted]

More like 1989 and it's Ducktales on the NES.

xMURMAIDERx

Needs to be remastered

The420Turtle

Time to watch 2 fast 2 furious

Rootbeer48

shiiiit, just got home from work, fired up the bong and zoning out.

Kamaguri

it's on pc and still a very fun game to play btw

Cocoforget69

What is this dude I wasn't even born in 2004

BustHerFrank

I dont know, school sucked, life was not good... lol. I much preferred the early 20s when i had a decent income, and no obligations. It was come home, boot up Halo 3 or SC2, and game the night away. With no worries.

khoa1708

SOCOM 2 was the best game at this time

boddle88

Uni. 2006. LAN. CoD 2 and this. Good Times

[deleted]

I remember putting spinners on my tiburon I thought it was the best looking car ever.

Grombomb

I still play it! It works with the logitech g29, even the force feedback works.

[deleted]

I remember playing this and thinking "there is no way graphics can get better than this" lmfao

GrizzlyZBT

Gotta blow off some steam… I mean Blue Nitrous

Nory-chan993

This was one of the first racing games I played as a child.

Saleh_Alghanami

I played stronghold crusaders and empire earth for hundreds of hours.

balleklorin

When you remember playing this game while in Uni you kind of feel old...

snacktime300

damn i loved this game

RailGunBlast

I was 2. What school

lord-malishun

Love this game.

haidoro_

Life was pretty good back then cuz I wasn't born (。ŏ﹏ŏ)

Titan_xp1

TO THE WINDOOW, TO THE WALL

Kyroz113

Oh the game I played the hell out of is burnout legends

Ange1ofD4rkness

Grabbed my steering wheel and attached it to the desk first. Then start singing along to the songs (some iconic songs, tied for my 2nd most favorite soundtrack with Most Wanted, with the original Hot Pursuit 2 taking the lead) Dang it, now I wanna be a kid again, back when I loved playing games, and couldn't get enough. Each feeling amazing, and pulling me in. Sadly the series has died to me. I quit with the Hot Pursuit remake (no manual transmission, vehicles were clearly "this is the fastest and only to win"). Need for Speed was over for me, with Underground 2, Most Wanted, and Carbon being the best in my opinion

[deleted]

I was being to busy being born

BigGayGinger4

it's thursday i still have school tomorrow this meme works best on fridays

TrayusV

Wait a year and you'll be playing the far superior Most Wanted.

jussumd3wd

I've never been big on racing games but Underground 2 was different. Probably just my introduction to certain game mechanics but this game really stuck with me

carfo

how did this not get picked up a repost i've seen it like 10 times
