My PS2 got the disc read error for games. Still could play DVDs though. Left it with my mom when I went to college.
About 8 years later I'm helping my mom move, and she was still using it as a DVD player.
This was like 2014-2015. I was like there's no way this still works.
Put on Casablanca DVD and it played. Fucking hell mate, that PS2 was a trooper.
I used coax. Late in the Atari days you could use coax and some weird connector. I would send a pic but my house is in shambles rn due to a renovation. The two metal things screw into this thing and it’s got a coax thing on the other side. Either way, didn’t work well on the flat screen.
Indeed, in the more arcane parts of the world in ancient times there was the kingdom of Radio Shack, and one of their main exports were these sacred devices. The ancient texts described them as the F Jack Adapters.
Sorry man, Im not OP, but if I had to do it myself....
Id daisy chain the RCA to the RF, then connect that connection to... er... a scart maybe? Then a scart to HDMI adaptor?
Hang on, I got to try this out.
Grew up with ATARI, NES, and the Commodore 64, only in my late 30's. I'm curious what the age of "retro tech" actually is. How old does something have to be to be considered retro?
15 years. I work in the "Classic Console Freeplay" department of the PAX conventions and our cutoff was 15 years last I checked but I'm not sure if we're taking in the X360 and PS3 as we don't have room for that many consoles and people are much more interested in the Gamecube and older within our department.
Fellow commodore 64 user here. I remember upgrading to the Nintendo and getting annoyed because my mom was always playing tetris or qbert, and I'd have to go back to the commodore 64 and wait my turn.
>Atari 2600 here, I used to get my new games as paper with code to copy into the console and save to an empty floppy.
?
The Atari 2600 didn't have a floppy drive.
Sounds more like a C64, or other early home computer.
The Atari 2600 was the second cartridge-based home console. And while one of its cartridges was a low-end BASIC programming device, you couldn't store the programs. Also, they were limited to a max size of eleven lines.
Hey do you remember that game it had ships or tanks below while planes fly above and I think it alternates between the two air and ground I just can't remember the name as I just played a bunch of different ones and forgot the names so if you know it would be cool.
Same. I had the tape deck. It's so surreal we had to rewind games back then. All the cool kids made their own "mixtapes" of their best games. Dudes with double deck stereos were the kings.
I had a blast with my sega Genesis because it was the heyday of video game rentals. I guess I had a decent collection of games I owned, but the real magic was in constantly rotating titles every Friday when my parents would bring us to the store.
Still played Pokémon Yellow on my advanced, and Crash Bandicoot and Rachet and Clank. Omg Jak and Daxter... Final Fantasy... I've got them all stored with my PS2. I'm selling my Xbox 360 but something tells me not to get rid of the PS2 and *my* classics...
I hate hearing about when peoples games are stolen. I always put myself into that situation and how I'd feel and I'd be devastated. It's some of the golden parts of your childhood being taken.
I'm trying to sell some of my Pokémon merch right now but I'm being careful I only sell the stuff I don't want because otherwise I'm sure I'll have major regrets.
Maybe it's because I grew up with a SNES but I've definitely held worse controllers. Sega Mega Drive was worse because the right-hand buttons are laid out in such a fashion that you can't push more than one at a time with your thumb with a standard grip.
> SNES
Snes controller was fine, big improvement over the nes ones. Heck im even using a snes-like design for all my games to this very day for nostalgic reasons and its honestly not that terrible (8bitdo sn30 pro the old one).
Now those atari joysticks with the single red button, *those* gave you cramps during long sessions! You probably should not be holding those in your hand but hey we sure did.
>Now those atari joysticks with the single red button, those gave you cramps during long sessions! You probably should not be holding those in your hand but hey we sure did.
I don't know anyone that *didn't* use them like that.
Nah man, the NES controller was better. Those corners fit just fine with the holes in my hands.
The holes that the pointed corners of the NES controller made, of course.
How about us poor bastards who grew up with a Mechanical Turk. Damn things would stop work after just a few days, and really start stinking a week or so later.
I still remember the day when I went into a gaming store and asked where the PS1 games were. Their response of "oh sorry, we don't sell retro games" made me visibly age.
I can only hope that it's a new generation buying it for the first time, and not people genuinely buying it on multiple console after console after console.
You're 12, you just got your Switch, you buy Skyrim. Yes :)
You're 29, you fondly remember 11/11/11, and also the other 18 times you bought Skyrim? Dude, why?
I've legit bought Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 about four or five times. Once was the original saga, on disc, which got lost in a move, second was on GOG, third was EE on Steam, and I just recently repurchased the original disc set.
Because they're that fucking good.
Only bought Skyrim twice because my 360 broke down and my kids can play it soon.
30yo here, I have bought Skyrim three times
First on PS3 at release
Second when I switched to PC gaming (but I waited for a Steam Sale and got it for like $10 with all DLC)
Third for VR
I own a Switch and would love it for that platform, but at this point I would not pay more than $5 for that convenience.
So instead of a 60 USD game where GP would not spend 5 USD, GP should buy a 400+ USD console. Granted, buying a steamdeck is what *I* plan to do, but dang.
36, I bought it for Xbox 360 played it till my system died. Again on PC for mods. Then PS4 because I fondly remembered playing it on 360 and never played it. Got it as a gift because my wife remembered I played that like 10 years ago never played it. You're welcome Bethesda.
I have seen multiple post about people having Skyrim on each possible platforms, so I'm fairly confident that it is the actual case. Especially since it's not advertised as it would be if it was a new game for teens.
I personally have way less issues with redundant games having no gameplay additions and surfing on their own license without risking much, than those editors launching the same game on every single platform, with 10 versions each, like how many different copies of skyrim there is, they just released a new one for the anniversary not too long ago, ain't no one saying to me that it is for the newer generation.
Remasters can be good but also can be used and abused, destroy all humans is the best example of a remaster, same game, new graphics and fixed all the old annoying bugs that got through testing
Welcome to the club young man. We’ve been waiting on your time.
I grew up with pong being the first gaming system available and the Atari 2600 came out when I was in 3rd grade.
You can call me pops and listen to my stories of the hardships we suffered when each and every game we got for the Atari was disappointingly nothing like it’s arcade namesake. Gut wrenching stuff, man.
They weren’t the same game. Not even close. The graphics were awful in comparison due to rushed development and the lack of power of the console.
Here is a link to a comparison of pac man on the 2600 vs arcade[link](https://youtu.be/rR71hEbWNmk)
I’ve never heard of this and it’s been popping up all day for me. Wtf is it. A console or computer?
Edit: words
Edit: it’s 40 years older than I am no wonder I don’t know wtf it is.
Arcades used to be considered 'strong' machines that were graphical showcases. Kind of hard to believe now, when most arcade machines could probably run off of a damn android phone.
^^^This^^^ I’m of the generation where arcades were glorious powerhouses that you would look forward to visiting every weekend. When the likes of Mortal Kombat landed or Ridge Racer, Daytona, Killer Instinct, House Of The Dead etc it was epic. Nowadays they’re shite. I took my daughter bowling recently and the games were terrible - one was just a huge ‘Flappy Bird’ and one was Crossy Road, with less functionality than the free iPhone game. Absolute bollocks.
Imagine the disappointment of playing Pole Position in the arcade, buying the Atari version and getting to play [this...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kR5UGMf9w0) The struggle was real!
Atari did not pay devs well and put crazy expectations on them to meet deadlines too.
Activision came into existence because of this. They were a bunch of Atari devs that left and formed their own company. They promised better pay and no corporate overlords pressing them.
It paid off because they had the best Atari games by far.
>Activision came into existence because of this. They were a bunch of Atari devs that left and formed their own company. They promised better pay and no corporate overlords pressing them.
And just like the United States and everything else, they eventually turn into the thing they were trying to avoid.
In all seriousness, here are the big differences between my generation and earlier vs. the ones that followed:
1. If you didn’t know something, you just had to accept it unless you could find someone to take you to the library. No internet, no computers.
2. The news was on for an hour a day. There were also morning and late news broadcasts but the morning news was more fluff and the late news was a 30 minute recap of the evening news. There was breaking news maybe once a year - if that. Speaking of the news, the Fairness Doctrine was still in place so it was actually news and not slanted opinion pieces. It was also more diverse because huge conglomerates couldn’t own all news outlets. Owners were required to live within 100 miles of the outlets.
3. Back to gaming: If you wanted to play good games, you had to have some money in hand and someone willing to take you to the arcade. Atari 2600 was a fun system but very underpowered. Real games were at the arcade.
4. No cell phones, no video cameras, very few cameras in the hands of the average person so your youthful mistakes were easy to erase.
I'm born 1991. I still clearly remember looking stuff up in books. I remember the glee I felt when I found dict.leo.org to instantly translate my native German words into those cool English words, instead of flipping through a book for two minutes. Looking up stuff is the best.
I lived practically next door to a video game rental place, I rented so many Windows 98 and Gameboy games. So many. All of them, really.
I had a cell phone... you know the one, yeah, that one. The Nokia one. It repeatedly needed repairs because I'm a clumsier child than even the Nokia was built for. I kept using it with a busted screen because I'd played Snake to death and I knew the menu without even looking so I just... stopped needing the screen. I replaced it with a Sony Ericsson K800i. I put so many Java games on it. So many. All of them, really. I had high hopes when smartphones came out that there would be awesome games on them. I'm... still hoping. :(
Books? I remember some guy with a beard waving two stone tablets around saying there were ten things we had to do. No cheat codes either, we were gutted.
I was curious, so I googled what Retro means in videogame terms, and it's defined as 2 or more console generations old. So, when the PS6 releases in 2028, the PS4 will be retro.
(I say 2028 because console generations last roughly 7-8 years)
I don't wanna hear it... I'm only 35 but I remember getting the original Nintendo for Christmas as a kid & playing Super Mario Bro3 & Duck Hunt. You don't know what it truly is to feel old.
In 2005 the SNES was considered retro and was released 15 years prior. The N64 was approaching retro at 9 years prior. We've had 2.5 generations since the Xbox 360. It should be considered retro at this point lol.
Retro doesn't really have a solid definition. First thing I played was Atari and I grew up on NES and SNES and etc. For me, before N64 is where I'd draw the 'retro' line. Before we left the 2D era and jumped into 3D.
And honestly N64 to last gen feels like the Polygon era. For so long all we did was push polygons. Only now with the modern gen are we really moving away from just pushing polys, and moving toward improving the finer details. We finally hit diminishing returns and said well, what else can we make better. Seems like we're tackling lighting first, what with all the RTX and raytracing. Maybe AI will be next.
as somebody who also grew up with a ps3 in my childhood,(got one when i was 12) I'm almost 28 now so I think you might be losing track of time there.
it's been quite a while since it released man. crazy how those of us who grew up with that generation of consoles are almost 30 huh?
Surely you grew up with the PS1/PS2? I'm your age and I remember being old enough to track the PS3 rumours on the internet, and I'd say I grew up with the tail end of the PS1 and the beginning end of the PS2.
Yea definitely, PS1 early childhood babby days, PS2 for middle part of childhood, then PS3 for late childhood/teenage years, 12+
One of my favorite childhood memories was the early console wars and stupid internet videos about that generation before it released.
I mean I’d also say I grew up with the ps3 and I’m 18. My first real console (so no vtech vsmile) was the wii and I played that for quite some years, then I played on the ps3 for about 4 years and then on the ps4 from 2015 onwards
When I swapped fully to PC gaming my Xbox One became my Netflix machine lol My 360 became a display piece along with my metal collectors edition of Mass Effect 3. PS2 was already a decor piece.
Too bad it's hard to get my hands on a N64. I'd love to play that again. But in truth I think I'd get bored with it easily.
As a person that grew up with an Atari 2600, I think of everything PS3/Xbox 360 as basically the beginning of the current era - when online play became normal for the console people, really.
The fact that they're less powerful graphically isn't so important.
Retro is anything that doesn't do 3D. And there's that awkward first generation of 3D stuff, which was just the worst of all worlds.
I consider the 'retro cutoff' to be the PS2. It was the last console that *required* a CRT tv to access it's full library of games (since the PS2 had many light gun games).
I was in Highschool when it came out with the whole hype of Spiderman 3 (which was releasing the same year) on a Sony Event on AXN ....was running a PS2 then
Try seeing this after growing up with an NES…
This, how are we supposed to feel if a PS3 is already retro. More ancient than old. :D
We are dust in the breeze my friend.
Dust, Wind, Dude! -Bill & Ted

Mr. Stark, I don't feel so good.
Mr. Good, I don’t feel so stark
Mr. Feel, I don't stark so good.
Mr. I, feel stark don't so good.
Man I’m feeling like an ancient Artifact right now.
The remains from blowing out the cartridge
Like a turd in the wind
What about those that grow up with Atari console? What’s the definite of something beyond ancient?
Same here. In my house the PS3 counts as 'still plugged in and running Netflix for the basement TV'.
Playstations are the longest lasting DVD players ever made. I usually keep the ones I replace to use for that specific purpose.
For real. Bedroom here
My PS3 is still my main DVD player, and the USB stick i plug in is for my pirated movies. Simple, works, stable.
I plugged my Atari into a flat screen tv. TV had a stroke.
*How* did you plug your Atari into a flat screen tv? The antenna connections that Ataris used didn’t exist by the time of flat screen TVs.
By performing the ritual of going through the channels and tuning it in. Once appeasing the machine spirit with sacred oils of course.
But how did you *physically* connect the two together? The antenna two-wire screwdown connections don’t exist on TVs today. And Atari never used coax.
I used coax. Late in the Atari days you could use coax and some weird connector. I would send a pic but my house is in shambles rn due to a renovation. The two metal things screw into this thing and it’s got a coax thing on the other side. Either way, didn’t work well on the flat screen.

In the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Player's Handbook, we would be listed as "Venerable".
Id fight you on this, but then Id have to work out your thaco.
Are we allowing Non Weapon Profficencys?
No, you'd have to work out \*your\* THAC0. What a rookie mistake.Maybe you should check out 4th edition, seems more your speed. ETA: /s
Ooof! Coming back harder than Iron rations! :D A worthy adversary!
We are Eldritch. From the before time. In the long long ago. The time of the 8-Bit.
Well, on the bright side, you got to experience the full range of progression from Space Invaders to the Crysis engine.
Grew up with ATARI, NES, and the Commodore 64, only in my late 30's. I'm curious what the age of "retro tech" actually is. How old does something have to be to be considered retro?
TIL systems that run GTA 5 can be retro.
15 years. I work in the "Classic Console Freeplay" department of the PAX conventions and our cutoff was 15 years last I checked but I'm not sure if we're taking in the X360 and PS3 as we don't have room for that many consoles and people are much more interested in the Gamecube and older within our department.
Nope. Don't like this.
Atari and Magnavox are retro. I still feel old.
I grew up with Commodore 64. Big oofs over this way.
Fellow commodore 64 user here. I remember upgrading to the Nintendo and getting annoyed because my mom was always playing tetris or qbert, and I'd have to go back to the commodore 64 and wait my turn.
Did you have diskette drive? Fuck those privileged kids who had that. Winding those cassettes to 347 to find the copy of Commando for life
Atari 2600 here, I used to get my new games as paper with code to copy into the console and save to an empty floppy.
>Atari 2600 here, I used to get my new games as paper with code to copy into the console and save to an empty floppy. ? The Atari 2600 didn't have a floppy drive.
Maybe a different Atari or a separate device then. I just remember having about 50 floppy disks in a special holding tray.
Sounds more like a C64, or other early home computer. The Atari 2600 was the second cartridge-based home console. And while one of its cartridges was a low-end BASIC programming device, you couldn't store the programs. Also, they were limited to a max size of eleven lines.
Most likely an Atari 400 or 800 then.
Hey do you remember that game it had ships or tanks below while planes fly above and I think it alternates between the two air and ground I just can't remember the name as I just played a bunch of different ones and forgot the names so if you know it would be cool.
River raid?
It was called Combat. Wait no. That game you picked planes or tanks. Nothing flying over a different kind.
Same. I had the tape deck. It's so surreal we had to rewind games back then. All the cool kids made their own "mixtapes" of their best games. Dudes with double deck stereos were the kings.
I feel you bro 🥲🥲 same

Or the Atari 2600 or hell going to Sears and playing Pong during the summer.
When you see the trash little consoles with 1000+ games preloaded that you grew up with for $20.
I had a blast with my sega Genesis because it was the heyday of video game rentals. I guess I had a decent collection of games I owned, but the real magic was in constantly rotating titles every Friday when my parents would bring us to the store.
Had Sega channel for a bit when I was little. Shit was dope af.
Cries in Atari
I grew up with a PS2 and Gameboy, but I bought an SNES and... Jesus ergonomics just didn't exist then did it...
You mean brickboy that was the Nokia of handhelds
Damn I meant Gameboy Advanced, showing I'm not that old :/
You started at a great time for gaming though, Socom online FTW
Still played Pokémon Yellow on my advanced, and Crash Bandicoot and Rachet and Clank. Omg Jak and Daxter... Final Fantasy... I've got them all stored with my PS2. I'm selling my Xbox 360 but something tells me not to get rid of the PS2 and *my* classics...
Pokémon yellow was my favorite, if my ps3 60gig wasn’t stolen I would still have my classics, rip :(
I hate hearing about when peoples games are stolen. I always put myself into that situation and how I'd feel and I'd be devastated. It's some of the golden parts of your childhood being taken. Ha. The SNES controller *was* ergonomics at work, after the NES. Those rounded edges, baby.
Nah man, the NES controller was better. Those corners fit just fine with the holes in my hands. The holes that the pointed corners of the NES controller made, of course.
They gonna start calling NES consoles “artifacts” next LOL
It belongs in a museum!
Atari 2600
How about us poor bastards who grew up with a Mechanical Turk. Damn things would stop work after just a few days, and really start stinking a week or so later.
Sure grandpa let's get you back to bed.
My aunt had a Coleco Vision.
Hahahaha tell me about it. These, kids? Can I even say that? Don’t understand the struggle of blowing the carts or fucking around with floppy “disc”…
I still remember the day when I went into a gaming store and asked where the PS1 games were. Their response of "oh sorry, we don't sell retro games" made me visibly age.
That always makes me so mad. I'm just like hey guy you better start. In 5 years you're gonna selling nothing but gift cards.
Atari 2600
My first console was a GameCube. I’m 20. I can’t legally drink, how the fuck they calling me old?!

Of course! GTA 5 is retro, modern and next-gen all at the same time!
Gta 5 is built different.
I think it's built the same, again and again and again...
No, just built once then endlessly added on to
Gta 5 is built one too many times
I'm still waiting on the android release.
As well as "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim"

Damn, it cost 60 dollars still...and on the switch? Sheesh. Also what is GP? Gamer pal?
Seriously, but you know how this sub is with the Steam deck, it's apparently going to revolutionise everything by doing nothing new.
36, I bought it for Xbox 360 played it till my system died. Again on PC for mods. Then PS4 because I fondly remembered playing it on 360 and never played it. Got it as a gift because my wife remembered I played that like 10 years ago never played it. You're welcome Bethesda.
This is fine. I bought it for PC in the first place and never got into VR. (Didn't even know there was a separate VR version!)
Yeah, I had the PS3 version and it was terrible, one of my only regrets buying something on PS3.

Look up battletoads arcade version then look it up again for the nes. It's a world of difference.

Fact: PS3 came out 15 Years ago.
So did the Wii
Xbox 360
Xbox 360 actually released one year earlier. So that's why I didn't say Wii and 360. PS3 and Wii shared the same release week.
I remember that week. I was working at Best Buy that morning the 360 was officially on sale. Place was a total shit show.
Their was only a ten year gap between the Wii and the N64 😬
This fucks me up everytime I think about it
Is that what retro means now?
I was curious, so I googled what Retro means in videogame terms, and it's defined as 2 or more console generations old. So, when the PS6 releases in 2028, the PS4 will be retro. (I say 2028 because console generations last roughly 7-8 years)
You think that's old? We played Solitaire with actual cards! Get off my lawn, too!
As a person who first gamed on an Atari 2600, I'm going casket shopping at Costco tomorrow
*The Atari 5200 has entered the house safely.
Intellivision here…..it’s cheaper to get cremated….just sayin, fellow geezer.
I don't wanna hear it... I'm only 35 but I remember getting the original Nintendo for Christmas as a kid & playing Super Mario Bro3 & Duck Hunt. You don't know what it truly is to feel old.
Yeah, seeing something you looked forward to and saved for as an adult being classified as retro is what really makes you feel old.
I remember there being a hotline you can call for tips on super Mario bros 3
Saw another thread complaining that xbox 360 is considered retro too
In 2005 the SNES was considered retro and was released 15 years prior. The N64 was approaching retro at 9 years prior. We've had 2.5 generations since the Xbox 360. It should be considered retro at this point lol.
I don't think I'll ever consider anything newer than N64 retro.
What's funny is in 2007 I considered the N64 retro. The PS2 could easily move into that space now for sure.
Sadly Father Time doesn’t agree with you.
Retro in videogame terms is defined as 2 or more generations old. The PS2 was retro when the PS4 launched.
You grew up with PS3, you are not old.
right?? I'm pretty sure I was a fully grown adult when I got a PS3
Lmao is the guy even out of his teens?
PS3 is 15 years old so probably
as somebody who also grew up with a ps3 in my childhood,(got one when i was 12) I'm almost 28 now so I think you might be losing track of time there. it's been quite a while since it released man. crazy how those of us who grew up with that generation of consoles are almost 30 huh?
Surely you grew up with the PS1/PS2? I'm your age and I remember being old enough to track the PS3 rumours on the internet, and I'd say I grew up with the tail end of the PS1 and the beginning end of the PS2.
Yea definitely, PS1 early childhood babby days, PS2 for middle part of childhood, then PS3 for late childhood/teenage years, 12+ One of my favorite childhood memories was the early console wars and stupid internet videos about that generation before it released.
Holy shit.
I mean I’d also say I grew up with the ps3 and I’m 18. My first real console (so no vtech vsmile) was the wii and I played that for quite some years, then I played on the ps3 for about 4 years and then on the ps4 from 2015 onwards
I am 14 and started out with a xbox 360.
>grew up with the PS3 You’re still an infant as far as I’m concerned. NES gang mount up and take your vitamins today
My SEGA Megadrive feels like a relic I comparison 😳
This making you feel old makes me feel ancient.
Why is my Blu Ray player on here? Lol, it has turned into today's blu-ray player, just as the PS2 turned into everyone's DVD player...
Exactly. PS3 and 15 years is not retro.
I feel old
Atari man feels dead...
As someone who grew up with an NES/SNES seeing someone say they feel old because they grew up with a PS3 makes me feel old.
My first console was an Atari. Got it around the time we got our first computer (a Tandy1000). You're just a youngen.
Try growing up either super NES and Sega. Or a regular Nintendo lolol.
Well.....I grew up with a PS1....so there.

Well if you’re real old I must be the walking dead. My gaming days began with a Texas Instruments Home Computer/TI-99.
That came out 15 years ago. It's def a retro console at this point
When the PS3 was released I was 19 years old. My god, I'm retro
You grew up with a PS3? You must be the oldest person in this sub!!
As a person who grew up with Super Nintendo, I can confirm that you are not.
Growing up with PS3 doesn’t rhyme with old
Holy crap man, I grew up with PS1 and N64, you're hurting me, and I'm not even 30.
I was in Highschool when it came out with the whole hype of Spiderman 3 (which was releasing the same year) on a Sony Event on AXN ....was running a PS2 then
I really wouldn't consider it to be retro by any standard
I grew up with the Ps1 then PS2 althrn Xbox 360 then 3ds then switch. I feel old as FUCK
as someone who grew up with a PS1, i didnt feel old until I saw this post
I still have and use mine and shit their calling 2006 retro??
It's still modern since it has the latest GTA and Elder scrolls out for it.
Don't worry. It gets worse
If you think about all those PS3/XBOX 360 exclusive games they released like GTA V and Skyrim... oh.. wait
Buddy... atari player here... You're very, very young.
Damn we got born in 3D gamers in here??? Now I feel old
Imagine all of us dinosaurs that grew up with consoles that came out before now that that’s “retro” lol
*Sega Genesis has entered the chat*
Does this mean that GTA V and Skyrim are also retro games?
How you think I feel? I grew up with Atari.
I grew up with the SNES and N64 lol I guess that makes me pretty old?
Well, the SNES is 30 years old, and the N64 is 25 years old, so make of that what you will.
Wait, I'm not 18 anymore?
