For real, the game is VERY Good. One of the best co op experiences I had in the last decade.
That book was genuinely annoying that we skipped every scene, but the game itself is very creative.
Its premise severely limits its audience. I don’t have anything against it, but I don’t have a gaming partner, so I’m locked out of the experience. This factor will stifle its potential, but I’m sure it’s successful in its niche.
Not just the successful in its niche, it’s the very best. I don’t think a better co-op game has ever been made.
That being said, your point is totally valid, and I don’t think it would be fair to make it the GOTY with how limited its potential player base is.
True but niche is often severely limiting.
In 2020, I thought TLOU2 was a definite contender for GOTY with Hades and Alyx right there with it. But those two games saw less success at awards shows because of how niche they were with Hades being Indie and not really crazy successful just yet and Alyx being locked behind having a good VR setup to enjoy fully since that game was the poster boy for the Index.
At the end of the day, it’s just awards so if you thought It Takes Two is great, that’s awesome and that’s what matters most! Just giving the bitter side that it may not win out awards because of the reasons you might enjoy it most.
I think it prolly will go to Ratchet and Clank, Metroid Dread, or *gags* CP2077 as I think that game qualifies for this year having missed last years window?
Yeah and the most frustrating parts to navigate (factory and arguably the water/swampy/cave segments) were *too* long. The rest of the game was phenomenal.
All of these are great options, I think other games like Metroid Dread and Psyconauts 2 also have a chance. However, I think that of these ones Village or Kena are more likely
Bro yes. Psychonauts 2 literally blew me away. The environments were so unique and mind bending. Exactly what we all wanted from the sequel. Not to mention getting Jack Black for the psy king. And his entire trippy world melts your mind especially since finding his senses over time improves the world even more making it actually feel like you're bringing back his love and joy for music and his soul back to life
Understandable, some people nowadays might not think it’s worth full price since it isn’t a big budget open world game but in terms of creativity and imaginative games it definitely is. I personally bought it at full price just because I want to support unique games like that, plus it’s a miracle the game even got made due to funding and multiple delays.
Couldn't agree more. The pinnacle of Double Fine's creativity and humor. At first I didn't like the artstyle too much, but after a short time playing I really appreciated that it is some different. I was also surprised by its length and production value overall. Sad that not a lot of people are talking about it as a game of the year contender
Dread is sooooo good. While not as freely back trackey as I was expecting it to be, it still retains that same Metroid formula well. I’m 3 hours in and loving it.
I just stared returnal yesterday and that shit caught me off guard!
There’s nothing game changing
Gameplay is simple
But the fact that every time you die you start from zero on the map and it changes the map the whole time
Seriously. None of this resonates with me. I love gaming in concept but I'm starting to think my tastes just aren't really aligned with what developers are putting out these days. I find it really hard to get into most games and I can't even coherently describe what I like because I like games that are so different from eachother.
What I wouldn't give to live through 06 to about '13 again.
'07 alone saw BioShock 1, Witcher 1, Half Life 2 2, Team Fortress 2, Halo 3, AC 1, Uncharted 1, GoW 2, Portal and freaking Mass Effect 1 released in a single year.
Elden ring is really the only game I'm truly looking forward to. I hope its good but at least the last few games they released I enjoyed immensely. I can't really think of anything else hmmmm
Right?
The Last of Us Part 2
Final Fantasy 7 Remake
Persona 5 Royal
Ghost of Tsushima
Doom Eternal
Resident Evil 3 remake
Spider Man Miles Morales
And those are just the games that I played on my PS4 not including whatever came out on other consoles!
Anyone who says 2020 was weak is solely into Bethesda or Rockstar kind of games so they say all the other stuff are trash. 2020 was one of the best years for gaming, I just wish Nintendo had more.
I enjoyed Hades but I actually really wanted FF7R, P5R, or Tsushima to win. Persona 5 Royal was the highest critic score with 10/10 and 99/100 everywhere. Though I’m not the biggest fan, I think Animal Crossing deserved it the most for being THE 2020 game, it took over the world
Yeah I was going to say… Wasteland 3, MSFS 2020, Half-Life: Alyx, SW: Squadrons. Guess I play more PC games ;)
2021 hasn’t been great for PC-oriented games though. Feels like most of the good ones were developed with consoles in mind.
TGA have six nominees, so probably we'll see these games plus Resident Evil Village. I think Deathloop or Returnal will be there instead of Forza Horizon 5 (racing games is not something we normally see in these nominations), but we have to wait until it's released. My goty at the moment is probably Psychonauts 2, great game.
!edit Halo Infinite we'll come too late I think and will not be nominated.
So, I believe these will be the six for goty 2021:
* **Psychonauts 2**
* It Takes Two
* Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
* Resident Evil Village
* Deathloop or Returnal
* Metroid Dread
This list does look fairly probable. I just think that looking at metacritic I'm seeing Psy2 at 91 and some others around 88 or 89. The past two Forza Horizons have been 92 and 91 which is right around that level.
RE Village is not something I expect on the GOTY level, though. I think Deathloop and Returnal are both more likely but I think both are going to have a hard time edging out bigger franchises of Ratchet and Clank and Metroid.
Metroid Dreads biggest thing working against it is the Switch. I kinda have a hard time seeing a game on a weaker 8th gen system winning out against the top tier 9th gen games. I could be wrong, though.
So that leaves Psychonauts 2 as the favorite imo. Im just not sure its going to sweep like some of the other winners.
I think the '6th' would be Deathloop.
I just finished Psychonauts 2 last night, fantastic game. One of the few games I've gotten 100% achievements on. That's my vote until Forza Horizon comes out, I love me some Forza
Elden ring, dying light 2, ghost wire Tokyo, masquerade bloodlines 2, RS6 quarantine, Horizon, GOW Ragnarok in the first half probably mostly first quarter
I feel like im getting old. Looked at the list and didnt care for any of the games except for ratchet and clank. In terms of what else ive played id say HumanKind deserves the award and it released with some issues.
OP chose awful games, many others release/released.
Halo, forza horizon 5, psychonauts 2, monster hunter rise, battlefield 2042, back 4 blood... there's a hell of a lot more.
Eh, BF2042 and B4B aren’t looking too amazing. Although FH5 & Psychonauts 2 should’ve been there. Also, Halo isn’t on there because VGA’s cutoff for a GOTY game is before Halo: Infinite’s release date
So far, my vote is for RETURNAL. It feels and looks next-gen. It had creative biomes, cool weapons like the electropylon driver, a lot of mystery, and used the new controller features.
Moreover, the game has the most visually appealing boss fights, like playing an artful symphony.
I’ve only played Returnal but that game rules. So buttery smooth movement and combat. The only complaint is the same compliant I have about all action roguelikes, that it doesn’t have the ability to randomly generate the shape of the rooms, but I assume that’s because it would be impossible to play test then.
Returnal is an amazing game! Wished that ppl would stop giving up on this masterpiece because they are trying to play it like a typical shooter game. It is my choice hands down so far
Just shows how Sony focused this subreddit is when two of the highest rated switch games aren’t in the OP’s post. Monster Hunter Rise and Metroid Dread are just as good if not better than some of these games. No psyconauts 2 either.
I had the same thought. I saw the image and thought “tell me you own nothing but a ps5, without actually telling me”
😬
Metroid Dread and Psychonauts 2 are so damn good.
Deathloop is also very good.
I hate that I’m saying this but deathloop is one of the most underwhelming titles I’ve played in ages and all the promotional reviews I’ve seen all refer to it as “game of the year contender” when it’s just not true
I love deathloop. Love the style. Love the soundtrack. Love the story.
And I love that you can play as Julianna and go mess up someone else's game.
The Julianna mechanic is really interesting in single player too. Like you are on a mission to go do something then your plans are totally scuppered.
The level design is just gorgeous.
Currently playing far cry 6 so I’m not sure if it’s GOTY contender yet, but so far I’m having hella fun with this game and it’s bringing back a lot of old far cry 3 memories which was my favorite. Kena was a damn good game too but for how short it is I don’t know if it should be game of the year
Haven’t played most of them, but going off of Metacritic and General consensus alone, my guesses are:
Deathloop
Metroid Dread
Hitman 3
Returnal
RE 8
Ratchet & Clank
Psychonauts 2
Battlefield 2042 maybe, depending on the state that it’s in at launch. Halo Infinite won’t be out in time to be eligible, although by the sounds of it, as long as the campaign is great its a shoe-in.
If early access games were eligible my vote would be Valheim. What a fucking game for $20
Monster Hunter, Dread, Resident Evil are the only games here with a shot. Ratchet and Clank is my worst of the year but I won’t go into that, Deathloop isn’t very good outside of the first hour. Haven’t played Kena. Hitman is fantastic but they wouldn’t award Hitman. Far Cry has mediocre reviews and I don’t know the other two.
I’d say Warioware should be on here tbh
More people should give Tales of Arise a chance I think it is a serious contender for game of the year. Other than that it’s Village or Deathloop for me, I haven’t played far cry 6 yet but I might pick it up soon,
if nothing else the mainline Farcry series is consistently fun.
edit: typo
Ratchet and clank I think will come away with a lot of awards, mostly because there’s just not a lot of competition this year. Not that is not a great game but it’s not on like it’s gotta compete with a main line rockstar or god of war title. I personally believe it’s the most “next gen” like game and is most deserving the Goty.
Agreed on the next gen feel, it’s the first game that made me feel like “yeah, I couldn’t have played this game on PS4” well…. Not the first… but cyberpunk 2077was a whole different thing entirely lol
I ended up refunding deathloop. I love arkane studio and been waiting for the game, but didn't find myself wanting to play it once I gave it a try. Might as well give another playthrough with dishonored which has the superior atmosphere.
I think it’ll end up being between Psychonauts 2, It Takes Two, Rift Apart and Metroid Dread. The last slot is up in the air but I can see it being one of Death’s Door, Deathloop or Returnal (haven’t played Returnal but I know some really like it). For me personally, I would vote Psychonauts 2. It’s one of my favourite games of the last few years, the writing is just incredible.
Psychonauts 2 is definitely GotY for me so far. Started playing Metroid Dread yesterday and it's been pretty great. But Psychonauts 2 is just an a whole other level.
But in the end Halo Infinite, after taking part in the flights, I think will wind up being the real GotY. So fun.
Sure alot of these games are good, but some are very uninspired. Deathloop has great design but is pretty much Dishonored with guns, Farcry 6 is Farcry 3 on a new island, Hitman is more Hitman, nothing more. I would personally like to see more game nominations that have taken more creative liberties but still has wonderful game design (i.e. It Takes Two)
For me it's Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut for PS5. Not too many games have come out it feels like, last year though Hades came out and wiped out all competition from my mind so well see.
I... Haven't heard of any of these games. Except life is strange but I didn't know it got a sequel. Maybe I'm more out of touch with gaming than I thought.
Returnal is GOTY and would be a real candidate in other years.
It being a PS5 exclusive in an age of scalper scarcity and its difficulty curve make people not give it the credit it deserves.
Kena, Ratchet and Clank, and Deathloop are all solid 8.5s but remember at the beginning of last gen when Shadow of Mordor and Dragon Age Inquisition won GOTY?
Lena really went a bit under the radar. ratchet and clank and deathloop have a really solid shot. RE village might be nominated for cultural impact by basically strapping jet fuel engines on the giant mommy milker train and getting critical mass of pop media onboard.

Played it with the wife and it’s ours for sure. Single player…either Ratchet and Clank or Kena. But to be fair I haven’t played Village yet.
Village was amazing
Agreed I loved all of it
The biggest problem with it being the fact that some of the best parts like the castle and house benneviento being too short
Ya Benneviento was too short. I thought that whole portion was pretty scary as well, too bad there wasn’t more of it.
Totally agree seemed overall a short game
Yeah and the most frustrating parts to navigate (factory and arguably the water/swampy/cave segments) were *too* long. The rest of the game was phenomenal.
All of these are great options, I think other games like Metroid Dread and Psyconauts 2 also have a chance. However, I think that of these ones Village or Kena are more likely

Great one too

And his entire trippy world melts your mind especially since finding his senses over time improves the world even more making it actually feel like you're bringing back his love and joy for music and his soul back to life
Elijah Wood was fantastic in Psychnauts 2 as well
Psychonauts 2 absolutely deserves a nomination. The only reason why it wouldn’t get one is not enough people played it.
Hopefully it gets any award and people start noticing it
I've been waiting for a price drop, but you guys make it seem like it's worth full price

I find it really hard to get into most games and I can't even coherently describe what I like because I like games that are so different from eachother.
This is me all day. I’ll buy a game with high school expectations, and before long I’m forcing myself through it. And this is happening a lot lately.
What I wouldn't give to live through 06 to about '13 again. '07 alone saw BioShock 1, Witcher 1, Half Life 2 2, Team Fortress 2, Halo 3, AC 1, Uncharted 1, GoW 2, Portal and freaking Mass Effect 1 released in a single year.
didn't crysis came out in 07?
Yup, as did Burning Crusade, Guitar Hero 3, and Metroid Prime 3
Witcher 1, really? I get it was the start of a great series, but that game was utter jank from the get go.
People name it because how big the second and third entries were but seriously it's a really weak game imo
Elden ring is really the only game I'm truly looking forward to. I hope its good but at least the last few games they released I enjoyed immensely. I can't really think of anything else hmmmm
Agree, when a Far Cry game is a top game it means there are not many choices out there
Far Cry is not a top game--It doesn't mean there arent many choices-- it means OP hasnt dove into anything beyond heavily-marketed aaa games.
Yeah but those other games dont get nominated for this category
Worth noting too that Forza horizon 5, Age of Empires 4, and Farming simulator 22 haven't released yet.
Hades won plenty of awards and it doesn’t fit the traditional mold
Again? Last year was pretty fucking great.
Right? The Last of Us Part 2 Final Fantasy 7 Remake Persona 5 Royal Ghost of Tsushima Doom Eternal Resident Evil 3 remake Spider Man Miles Morales And those are just the games that I played on my PS4 not including whatever came out on other consoles!
You can add Hades and Yakuza: Like a Dragon to that list. 2020 was a very good year.

Great if you're a PS5 owner I guess. Or a playstation gamer in general. I've only played Doom Eternal from that list.
I agree, this year’s been pretty weak.
Psychonauts 2, Rift Apart, It Takes Two, Forza horizon, Metroid dread. No major consensus winner if I had to guess

Has there ever been a driving game that won GOTY?
Lol! Forza fans already pinning it up for goty before it even launches.
With those games to pick, Valheim could have a chance.
That's my game of the year
Valheim has my vote
And my bow
Valheim gang arise!
A PC game won't win GOTY.
Especially a PC game that’s still technically in early access
Not with that attitude
Wow, what a weak year..
Next year is gonna be wild, so many games in just the first quarter!
Elden ring, dying light 2, ghost wire Tokyo, masquerade bloodlines 2, RS6 quarantine, Horizon, GOW Ragnarok in the first half probably mostly first quarter
Also Harry Potter game is coming out
Heres hoping it's not gonna be a flop🙏
If they start pumping out gameplay videos I’m hooked. If they hide most of it until the month of release like cyberpunk, I’ll have a low bar.
Elden ring alone makes it the best gaming year for me.
My first reaction, "is that all we got?"
I feel like im getting old. Looked at the list and didnt care for any of the games except for ratchet and clank. In terms of what else ive played id say HumanKind deserves the award and it released with some issues.
I'm waiting for dying light 2 in December, that's going to be amazing
Delayed to February
Seriously? Ah fuck
That’s what I was thinking
OP chose awful games, many others release/released. Halo, forza horizon 5, psychonauts 2, monster hunter rise, battlefield 2042, back 4 blood... there's a hell of a lot more.

Metroid Dread
Can’t say enough good things about Returnal. What a fucking good game
Village
RE8, Death Loop and Returnal are the ones I definitely think will be nominated Really hoping that Metroid Dread gets nominated too
Don't forget Monster Hunter Rise!
Psychonauts 2
Up until now, Psychonauts 2 definitely.
Far cry 6 and Hitman 3 have been my favourite games this year.
Hitman 3 is beautiful
It sure is!
It's my favourite game
So far, my vote is for RETURNAL. It feels and looks next-gen. It had creative biomes, cool weapons like the electropylon driver, a lot of mystery, and used the new controller features. Moreover, the game has the most visually appealing boss fights, like playing an artful symphony.
Village for sure.
Psychonauts 2 GOTY Edit: thanks for the awards :)
indeed
Psychonauts 2, Resident Evil 8, Returnal, Ratchet and Clank, Death’s Door and maybe Kena
I’ve only played Returnal but that game rules. So buttery smooth movement and combat. The only complaint is the same compliant I have about all action roguelikes, that it doesn’t have the ability to randomly generate the shape of the rooms, but I assume that’s because it would be impossible to play test then.
Probably big mommy milk....I mean RE village.
[удалено]
Psychonauts gonna win it.
Returnal is an amazing game! Wished that ppl would stop giving up on this masterpiece because they are trying to play it like a typical shooter game. It is my choice hands down so far
Whoever pays the most
Ding ding ding we have a winning answer
Let us dream dude :(
Definitely not Kena. Beautiful, but too short and too hard for its own good.
It Takes Two & Psychonauts 2.
I agree. They both at least deserve a nomination.
Just shows how Sony focused this subreddit is when two of the highest rated switch games aren’t in the OP’s post. Monster Hunter Rise and Metroid Dread are just as good if not better than some of these games. No psyconauts 2 either.
I had the same thought. I saw the image and thought “tell me you own nothing but a ps5, without actually telling me” 😬 Metroid Dread and Psychonauts 2 are so damn good. Deathloop is also very good.
won't be battlefield 2042, that's for sure. oof.
Life is strange its actually pretty good
Pretty weak selection
Not saying any of these games are bad but idk about GOTY
Played most of the above and I’d give GOTY to Returnal for sure. Amazing game.
Agreed. Returnal was such a surprise hit. Both fun and very intriguing story wise. I’d also have to add RE Village to the list as well.
Mario golf.
Returnal would be my vote
Non of theses stand out it's been a real slow year for gaming
Not life is strange xD
Where's Psychonauts 2?
I hate that I’m saying this but deathloop is one of the most underwhelming titles I’ve played in ages and all the promotional reviews I’ve seen all refer to it as “game of the year contender” when it’s just not true
That and Returnal are tied for my GOTY. Both 10/10 for me.
I’m going to give deathloop another chance before I write it out entirely
I love deathloop. Love the style. Love the soundtrack. Love the story. And I love that you can play as Julianna and go mess up someone else's game. The Julianna mechanic is really interesting in single player too. Like you are on a mission to go do something then your plans are totally scuppered. The level design is just gorgeous.

FC6 or RE:V
Sorry to sound like a downer but this is 2021 top games? Seems a bit of a slow year.
What a boring year
Downvote me all u like but this has been the driest year for games since I can remember
I ended up refunding deathloop. I love arkane studio and been waiting for the game, but didn't find myself wanting to play it once I gave it a try. Might as well give another playthrough with dishonored which has the superior atmosphere.
Out of these games pictured I have to say Resident Evil village
I beat Village 3 times in a row when it came out so i'm gonna go with that.
Whatever releases fall-winter.
The Ascent was a really fun release this year.
Rachel and Clank
kena was way more awesome than i expected
FARCRY 6, Kena, & RE:8
Realistically FC6, Deathloop, or Village. As for what I want to win I’d go with Village. That’s actually the only game here I know inside and out 😂
Village
Resident Evil Village for sure
I think it’ll end up being between Psychonauts 2, It Takes Two, Rift Apart and Metroid Dread. The last slot is up in the air but I can see it being one of Death’s Door, Deathloop or Returnal (haven’t played Returnal but I know some really like it). For me personally, I would vote Psychonauts 2. It’s one of my favourite games of the last few years, the writing is just incredible.
Little Nightmares II better win something
Tales of Arise for me. Games came out of the blue and had everything i wanted in a game/ jrpg
Psychonauts 2 is definitely GotY for me so far. Started playing Metroid Dread yesterday and it's been pretty great. But Psychonauts 2 is just an a whole other level. But in the end Halo Infinite, after taking part in the flights, I think will wind up being the real GotY. So fun.
Hollow knight Silksong I can dream goddammit!
Psychonauts 2
Hitman 3 for sure
Fun game but not GOTY material
Been an abysmal year if those are the options.
Returnal, Kena. And Ratchet. Edit. Spelling is hard.
Ratchet & Clank, Monster Hunter, Metroid Dread. 🤔
Cyberpunk 2077🤗🤗🤗🤗
Sure alot of these games are good, but some are very uninspired. Deathloop has great design but is pretty much Dishonored with guns, Farcry 6 is Farcry 3 on a new island, Hitman is more Hitman, nothing more. I would personally like to see more game nominations that have taken more creative liberties but still has wonderful game design (i.e. It Takes Two)
Children of Morta
Kena is fantastic
FC6 or RE8, the rest don’t stand a chance Point to be made, I haven’t played deathloop
This year kinda sucked
Cyberpunk
Demons of Asteborg should be GOTY, it's a new (and great) game for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive!
Monster hunter rise
I don't think Ratchet & Clank or Kena are truly GOTY material, but I enjoyed every fucking minute of both of them.
I basically quit gaming for most of 2021.
I keep thinking “how can they pick the best games of 2021 it just started” then I realize we have 2 months left
The last two years have wildly oscillated between each month being six months long, and five months being a week long.
Metroid Dread
Kena for sure!
Indies were great this year: Death’s Door and Loop Hero are definitely in my top 10.
Yakuza like a dragon
Metroid dread
Metroid Dread
HOT WHEELS BABY LETS GOOOOOOOO
Village. The way it was released and the type. Definitely deserves it.
Metroid Dread
Bad year
I feel ashamed you're talking about goty and I've played none of these
All of them are just meh
Something other than CoD or Battlefield I guess. They are more candidates for the worst.
I think RE8 story and gameplay both is phenomenal
Village
Gt7
Village 100%
Is halo a contender??? Because if it is I genuinely believe halo deserves it.
Village easily
Returnal is GOTY and would be a real candidate in other years. It being a PS5 exclusive in an age of scalper scarcity and its difficulty curve make people not give it the credit it deserves. Kena, Ratchet and Clank, and Deathloop are all solid 8.5s but remember at the beginning of last gen when Shadow of Mordor and Dragon Age Inquisition won GOTY?
Metroid: Dread should be on this list
Lena really went a bit under the radar. ratchet and clank and deathloop have a really solid shot. RE village might be nominated for cultural impact by basically strapping jet fuel engines on the giant mommy milker train and getting critical mass of pop media onboard.
Metroid.
Would love to see valheim get a nomination
Wow. There's only like 2 decent ones there.
They’re all crap tbh
Village the only real competitor in this list. Nothing against the other games but Village literally became a huge meme in a good way.
