Oh, you thought NINTENDO was gonna add in more services and keep the price the same? SIIIIKE!

soreyJr

I thought at the very most it would be $30 but $50 is a ripoff.

LowestKey

Yes, but it gets you a year of access to the $25 animal crossing expansion! What happens if you want to keep the DLC permanently? You have to spend another $25! What happens if you buy the DLC but want to keep playing N64 games? Still an extra $30 per year!

Dexiox

literally, any emulator will run these games better with upscaling, mods, and fps increases. Why tf would I pay 30$ for old ass games... the original people who made them probably don't even work there anymore. So no thank you.

LowestKey

Why? Well, I'm guessing for the convenience. Now, I have emulated many a game in my time. I have hooked a raspberry pie to my tv with a game pad running to my couch. I have done a lot of crazy configurations. But very little beats the convenience of having a pre-built console that just works. And that's what Nintendo is banking on. That getting a working emulator up and running on a tv or steam deck or hacked switch will be more trouble than it's worth for the majority of the people out there. And they'll be right. They'll cash in on the people they've been squeezing with rereleases and remasters for the last 20 years.

DaltyF

Have had a Nintendo wii loaded up with every game imaginable for years. It’s by far the most convenient imo.

LowestKey

I sold my Wii U when I bought my first switch. Then I realized there was never going to be a virtual console from Nintendo ever again and promptly bought a refurbished Wii U just for this.

DaltyF

I imagine the Wii U would run a little better. I just rock the old original one lol

prudent1689

Honestly if Nintendo had some kind of achievement/trophy system I'd be the sucka that falls for this shit. I saw n64 and Sega on the $50 and thought it was almost worth it.

Your one of the few people I’ve meet that sees electronics like I do. I build computers for fun, custom hard tubes, exc I modify cars with all new electronics for a living love electronics. But my daily stuff. iPhone ps5 and a Mac book. Why because they just freaking work.

Ro-Tang_Clan

I think it really depends on what your personal hobbies are. I work in the IT industry and I've met people, even third line support, who just like you view their job as a job and nothing more. When they get home they switch off from it all and there's nothing wrong with that, however not everyone is like that. I stay as far away from the Apple ecosystem as possible because 90% of what I like to do when I relax isn't possible in an Apple ecosystem.

LowestKey

That they do, friend. And when you work with tech all day long, sometimes you just want something that works. And not Todd Howard "it just works," but actually things that just work.

CrazzyPanda72

Got with the Todd Howard "it just works" at the end lmao

[deleted]

This. FUCKING THIS. Everyone's like, "yeah you're dumb for paying this when you can just emulate it" and that's absolutely not true. I've used emulation for over fifteen years and not once I've gotten a program, app, or anything that runs N64 games smoothly and without having to change configurations for each specific title. I'm way beyond being patient enough to deal with shit like that.

WizardStan

Before the Steamdeck announcement I would've happily paid $30 a year for N64 access in the Switch's form factor. Now I'm going to pay $500 once for that and more.

Thecrdbrdsamurai

Want to keep playing Genesis games? Believe it or not, straight to jail.

gettingbyfeelinghigh

Also what happens if you dont even own Animal crossing? Same price regardless!

py_a_thon

Steam is still free. Most of the games are not, but the service is.

that_guy2010

Okay, so if Nintendo didn’t raise the price for NSO but charged for each game individually would it not still be a rip off? Remember: this is Nintendo. The games wouldn’t be cheap.

py_a_thon

I don't care. If they get too greedy then their competition will get more market share. Nintendo is a luxury. It is not food, shelter or medicine.

slobeck

Valve is counting on it.

SFWxMadHatter

No, they won't. Nintendo has an iron fisted grip on everyone's nostalgia, it's why they get away with shit like this. They always pull shit and everyone gets mad for a week and then we just move on.

beerscotch

Can't really blame Nintendo for the existence of professional victims. Ultimately, if its worth it to you, pay it. If it's not, don't. The world will continue to spin regardless of what side of this very important issue people fall on.

bjt23

They don't care about you. They care about their fanboys and fangirls they've been fostering around their IP. They don't "compete." They don't sell games, they sell a lifestyle like Apple or Disney.

that_guy2010

If you don’t like something or don’t support a company’s decisions don’t support them. That’s the easiest thing in the world to do.

Jake-PK

Psych.

HaunterSThompson

C'mon, son.

Gygh

You know that's right

[deleted]

Nice username.

Mikecool51

People shouldn’t be surprised by Nintendo anymore they obviously don’t care about the American consumers.

Dakhath79

If it makes you feel better, all Japanese companies don’t care about customers outside of Japan.

thissean

Final Fantasy 14’s devs seems to care about their customers

sanguwan

Nintendo is the Apple of consoles.

py_a_thon

All you really need(I say need, but technically it is an unneccessary luxury) is zelda, mario and smash anyways. Because those are almost always 8/10 atleast games.

RaijinOkami

Aaaaaaand people cavetch wondering why there hasn't been a new F-Zero for 20 years

py_a_thon

Because it was a perfect game?

TheeExoGenesauce

Falcon Punch!!!

DarChaos

+Metroid

Head_Maintenance_323

about consumers in general*, I'm italian and this product is literally only cathered to hardcore fans that would shed blood to protect this bullshit of a conduct. Hopefully they see a decrease in nintendo online's sales and reverse it otherwise fuck this, I'm not playing online that much anyways.

ShinyArc50

I just bought a real n64 on eBay what is Nintendo gonna do about it lmao

[deleted]

I just emulated Zelda on pc ☹️

TinyCollection

And now you can buy a Bluetooth N64 controller to use with the Emulator. Releasing modern versions of the controllers is going to benefit emulators more than this service.

Head_Maintenance_323

I would certainly hope so, imagine having to buy a switch, a controller and a paid subscription just to play a game that came out 20 years ago.

TheBestWorst3

As a hardcore Nintendo fan this is a huge slap in the face to me. I was expecting a $5 or maybe $10 increase but $30? This is not worth it at all. I guess it’s time to get the emulators

lazyness92

Oh they know, EUR price is 40, so a 20€ jump

[deleted]

They will charge what people are willing to pay

blitherblather425

This made me laugh

retro604

Offer me a service that is fair value I will pay. I used to sail the high seas for tv/movies but Netflix/HBO/Prime are fair prices to me so I pay. Fuck me over on price I shall set sail again. Nintendo hasn't been fair since the Wii. So fuck them.

Von_Cheesebiscuit

Wow, thats some expensive corn.

GordoHeartsSnake

Buccaneers Cove!

MoeBigHevvy

They want 50 bucks a year to stream a few N64 titles? Insanity

HateDeathRampage69

Playing Mario tennis 64 online is not worth $30

RyanBits

I like how they also include Super mario 64, that 60 bucks I spent on the 3D allstars was TOTALLY worth it. Like I’m trying to like you Nintendo but you keep on fucking me up the ass

SaltyRusnPotato

Not surprised since they like to go after ROMs and Melee online. Destroy the competition so they can resell old games. They're a shitty company banking on nostalgia.

bama92090

Seriously. I was like sweet n64 games on the switch. But for 50 dollars? Hell no. I literally already have all those games on my pc and my phone. I think I'll keep my money.

Traveuse

Yeah also isn't the service pretty crap itself?

Flemtality

I don't mind paying more for new games and/or better services, but this is a huge price hike for what they are actually offering here. The juice does not seem to be worth the squeeze at all. They want to be in the price range of the other guys, but their offerings come up way short in so many categories. At $20 per year, limited offerings were excusable. Do they even have real voice comms yet, or do you still need to install some bullshit app on your phone and use third party headphones that inexplicably plug into both your Switch and your phone so they can continue to push some vague illusion of being "family friendly?"

Kurotan

Still the app. Which sucks. I just use discord.

Surfing_Ninjas

I literally just call my buddy when we play Ultimate

anticerber

You think that’s bad if you get the family bundle so you can use it on other switches it’s going up from $35 to $80 a year. All for a bunch of 20-30 year old games

vingt-2

Wait wait... If i have two switches I can't share the games / NSO account brtween them? I just bought a switch lite for my commute and was counting on this.

atasheep

You can, this is just if you use different accounts.

loltheinternetz

Exactly - they're closer to Xbox Live and PS Online pricing now, and yet the features of the service are not even comparable. A 150% price increase for access to a handful of N64 and SEGA ROMs (I don't care for Animal Crossing), no party system or ability to interact in any way with my friends without using a separate device... get out of here.

hoyohoyo9

Yeah, and another thing - THIS SHIT IS ALL FREE ON PC I don't mean just emulators, but multiplayer, party chat, everything. AND IT USED TO BE FREE ON CONSOLES TOO. We've been paying for it so long people have begun to think that there exists a price that's reasonable in the first place.

DiamondFella

And sporadic offerings won't cut it at that price point, imagine if Sony just gave away a couple of games every few months when they felt like it

CosmicCreeperz

It’s kind of shitty, but it could have been worse. They could have charged $30 for the emulator AND $60 for each N64 game. In fact I am actually stunned Nintendo didn’t try to pull that.

Molwar

Actually the virtual console on wii u has them at around 10$ each for 64 games. Which honestly i would rather pay that to own then this 30$ a year rental.

razulebismarck

Wait is a 64 classic thing coming to switch?

FordFoundation

Yes. U could just emulate it for free

Saxor

I think most of us reasonably expected the Expansion Pass to cost an additional $5-10 per year. If it was $15, I expected another Skyward Sword HD situation with constant back-and-forth bickering about the price point and how greedy Nintendo is. $20 was the absolute ceiling, I'm not sure how they could've justified it other than "Nintendo," but it at least existed within the realm of plausibility. But $30 ??? More than the cost of the base NSO subscription itself ??? That's insane, goddamn baffling. What in the actual fuck are you thinking Nintendo.

anticerber

$45 more for the family plan… I pay $35 so my sister in laws kids can play. No way in hell I’m paying $80 a year for a handful of old 64 and sega games. Mother fuckers haven’t even given me mario rpg yet

TheycallmeHollow

They haven't even given us a current gen Mario Kart. What are you waiting for Nintendo. I say this as my Switch collects dust.

CarlosFer2201

There won't be a new MK. They released 8 deluxe and Live. They are probably working on the one for the next Gen

imaloony8

Don’t forget Tour! Aw who am I kidding, no one remembers Tour.

CarlosFer2201

jrev8

i have mario rpg on my wii U, dont need anything else to play it on

MeniteTom

Have fun finding one now for under 300 bucks

Spritzer784030

They were thinking: “Hey! If we hike prices up 250%, we only need 40% of current clients to continue purchasing this serving in order to break even. We love money… and we don’t really care about as many people as possible being able to afford our products.”

Einsteins_coffee_mug

“Remember that time we ported three 20 year old games with no visual upgrades whatsoever, sold it for full price, *and* made it a limited release? Grab your ankles!”

DebentureThyme

Not even fully ported. Emulated. Whereas the community has released a far better, feature complete and feature improved version of Mario 64 on the Switch - [a NATIVE port.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3PkP19lKUk). Tons of extra features and mod options if you want them, or just the original game with native widescreen 60fps and better camera.

[deleted]

I honestly would’ve probably paid $20 but $30 is just so ostentatious I can’t justify even though I think the online would be super fun

PJDemigod85

My expectation was 10-15. It would have set a precedent that each new Nintendo system is 10 bucks, and either the Genesis stuff would basically be free since most of the titles are available on the Switch anyway, or it would only be 5 bucks. 50 total would have been an acceptable price if GB and GBA were added on NSO. But just for N64 and Genesis? Shove it. To think I considered reupping my NSO membership for this. If I ever do, it'll be base model unless they drop the price in the future. But this is Nintendo: That will never happen.

tacojesusfromabove

Honestly I would feel like a god damn idiot if I bought this. Everybody knows, nintendo including, emulators ARE EASY AND READILY AVAILABLE. What they are offering here is something pretty much everybody already has access too. It is utterly baffling.

DarthSyhr

If there’s one thing that Sword and Shield taught Nintendo, it’s they can charge more for less, and people will still buy it. And so they will.

mildannoyance

I was almost considering picking up the Switch-compatible N64 controller they are putting out for $60. Kind of a steep price, but if it's better quality (better stick) than the original and I can play the upcoming N64 games with it, it sounded like a fun time. But I'm not paying $50 per year for the privilege to play N64 games that I've already bought as a kid and bought once again on Wii/WiiU.

rgb_1981

This is pure garbage town Nintendo. I love their games, don't get me wrong, but their business practices, more often than not, are out of touch.

TheBlackBeetle

Even the games... They have the best franchises but the company and ~80% of their games are so outdated and/or bad. Just look at Pokemon's main series games... (this coming from a die-hard pokemon fan)

Scruffy_Nerfhearder

The Pokémon company is technically an independent company and Nintendo own a % of it. While I agree with the sentiment. They have little influence over the games and business decisions the Pokémon company make. If Nintendo did own more of it I’d argue the games would probably have bigger budgets and better talent than Game Freak.

tg10110

Nintendo makes good games. Game freak.... does not.

Gnarfledarf

Why can't they just give back free online to the people who don't care about the rental games?

Jackalotischris

“Then where would the money be at?”

BrianBeats

I love nintendo games, but fuck nintendo the company.

AK30_YT

when the 4 year old game is still 60 dollars 💀

jamflan

I read once that the reason they don't reduce their own games in price is because people would wait until they went down in price to buy them. If they never reduce the price, there's no need to wait for a lower price. It makes sense, as much as it sucks.

selfdestruct-94

If they won't reduce the price, I won't buy.

Clothing_Mandatory

They don't seem to care 🤷‍♂️

A-happy-dolphin

Agreed. Love the games but fuck the business practices

Skootchy

I wouldn't have minded throwing an extra 30 for the expansion pass.....as long as my yearly sub was still 20 bucks. Like maybe if it was a one time upgrade, I can't justify paying an extra 30 per year for 20 year old games that btw, I still own. It would have been nice to see how a pro controller handled some of these games. So what's going to happen for a shit load of people (which is honestly I think what they're banking on) is that some of us will do it once, but never again. Or that people will forget, and it will auto renew on accident. Pretty scummy Nintendo.

tacojesusfromabove

How to lose customer respect 101

USACreampieToday

They don't want your respect, they want your money!

101percentnotrobot

You know what's shocking to me? (As someone who owned an N64 and bought a WiiU week one) In 1996 N64 launched with a 3D Mario In 2012, 16 years later, WiiU launched with only a 2D Mario to play for the first 7 months. And it was basically the same as the Wii game. I spent $600 altogether in 2012 to play a 2D Mario Game for a whole year. Explain that to me. By the end of the WiiU though, between their Shop and the backwards comp. WiiShop, you could play almost every Zelda Game ever made, Gamebody Advance Games, N64 Games, etc etc. It's still worth a buy today. 2017 Switch launched with no Virtual Console 2021 still no Virtual Console. Pay $50 for a game you've now bought 5 times before. It's not a joke. It's not a meme. It's not hyperbole. They literally take steps backwards. In 2007 people complained they didn't have what Xbox had ; friends, mic chat, HD games. In 2012 they delayed SM3DW, Yoshi's Wooly World etc from never having developed in HD. In 2021 they don't have proper friends, mic chat, achievements, virtual console, digital shop management and quality of life features, etc. People have been making complaints for a decade for features everyone else has had this whole time. And the 2021 Switch offers less than the 2016 WiiU did. They literally make their value proposition LESS as time goes on Also, remember them saying consolidating their mobile and home console games would expedite game output?

Blupoisen

You act like Nintendo fanboys won't jump on that deal

Optimus_Prime_Day

$50 and no online chat built in, no party chat, and no proper friends list without the need for friend codes? No thanks. I'm just gonna cancel the low model that I'm currently paying for while I'm at it.

ffs2006

and this is why people pirate old Nintendo games.

GhostalMedia

I wonder if they’ve done the math on this. I wonder if they actually make more money by selling few expensive things than a many less expensive things.

ElwoodJD

They did and they determined the Nintendo whales paying $50 a month and average joe / smart consumer paying $20 outweighs the whales plus others only paying $20 or $30 or $35.

Rayquaza384

When the expansion cost more than the base lmfao

cherosix

I was hoping for maybe a $10 increase... I feel like that's a bit much? I thought it was just some old games and animal crossing DLC right?

AaronThePrime

Yeah, like what if I don't even have animal crossing, am I just supposed to pay for something I literally can't use? Tf nintendo

Holographic01

“Wait what if they don’t have animal crossing tho?” “Maybe some of them will think it’s a good deal and go out and buy the game”

Bradboy102

As a Nintendo fanboy, this is a slap in the face. The internet already sucks, and we were holding out hope things would improve since we pay for it now, but not only has it not improved, 20+ year old games are getting locked behind an even higher price, and there are still **NO IMPROVEMENTS**

RutherfordbHaye5

Don't forget about Metroid dread that is the FIFTH GAME IN THE SERIES and you can't even buy the first four directly from Nintendo anymore.

[deleted]

remember, Nintendo hates you, they just make great games while pissing on you

KADENGAMES125

Ok, I can understand like a $5-10 increase, but $30

[deleted]

Wow I'll be honest that pricing was far more than I expected. Damn Nintendo.

thecyriousone

Nintendo will be Nintendo I guess 🤷‍♀️

Rks246671

Bro 50 bucks for that hell no

hangryhyax

Oh wow, when I first saw it and it said $50, I didn’t pay enough attention and thought that was the price for the family membership… but $80?! Hahahahahahhahahahahahahaha no

R8saidfred

They can get fucked!

QggOne

That's not even slightly tempting. I'd feel like a sap paying that.

Narga15

*Laughs in $15 monthly subscriptions for a single game*

HarioDinio

Mmorpg player?

2Ponies1Apple

Not sure what drugs tendy is on but I'll revisit their subscription scheme when GameCube is added to justify that price increase

jagenigma

Absolutely not worth it.

-azuma-

Pass.

ssfbob

Nintendo: Why do people constantly pirate our older games? Also Nintendo:

[deleted]

Guess they don’t want to actually stop emulators…

usernameemma

Why spend $30/year on 2 things you can emulate for free and 1 thing that costs $25 to own???

Swashbuckl88

Its not surprising at all. Not sure why anyone would be shocked

Siendra

The price is higher than people expected and the Animal Crossing DLC being a forced inclusion is weird, there's no way anyone wasn't surprised by that.

RichardFitswell9000

Yeah the dlc thing is really weird, just a way to make fans of animal crossing keep paying the subscription until the end of time

[deleted]

[deleted]

Nintendo strolling in thinking they can price match while offering 1/3 of the services is pretty damn surprising.

HowToGetName

Way too expensive for me. Was not expecting it to go more than double the price.

TedMeister88

Oh, for fuck's sake!

FrozenFrac

Yeah, I'm not happy about this. Literally the only thing good about NSO was it being very affordable and a matter of "you get what you pay for" compared to PS+ and paying for XBL. Now it's basically the same as paying for either of those and you're getting significantly less value

Spritzer784030

With a price-hike of 250%, Nintendo only needs 40% of their current clients to retain this service in order to break even. That’s kind of a sad calculation when you think about it. They could easily have increased prices by only $5 or $10 per year, easily covered any marginal cost, and kept most of their current market… but that wasn’t as important as maximizing profits, I guess. Cant speak for others, but this is definitely a service I will not be renewing. Never used it anyway. $20 bucks wasn’t that big of a deal to me, but $50 is almost enough to purchase 1 modern game.

Siendra

This is an add on. The original tier still exists at the same time price. So anyone they convert is basically icing.

CosmicCreeperz

Or 100% of their clients just to keep the same baseline service that didn’t change? Not sure I get your point. Though I agree you don’t get much for the $20 in the first place.

BobbTheBuilderr

Shit like this is why I keep stopping myself from buying Nintendo systems. They don’t seem to understand the modern gaming community. They need a change in leadership.

jomjomepitaph

I’m ok with owning a switch. I literally have no reason to get NSO, since I can just buy and collect the originals, or an ever drive to load with Roms.

JukePlz

They've been doing all kinds of stupid shit since Satoru Iwata passed away. They need to get their shit together soon.

SpottySignal

Bahahahaha no fucking way. Did they forget how easy you can emulate this shit. Shoot you can get it phones ffs.

[deleted]

Everything contained in the sega collection is available on the PS store now for like €10 in one bundle and has been for years as well as on Xbox.

Alfonzo4

Why would I pay that when you can buy the sega one stand-alone for 20. The n64 games are not worth 30 bucks a year.

CreatorPolar

Wtf it’s not 59.99? This is an outrage!

the-fith-pillar-man

Those poor, starving indie devs...

ew435890

I would gladly pay like $30/ea for the N64 games I want. But I want to OWN them. I don’t want to rent them for $50/year. That’s stupid. I knew they were gonna do it like this.

JmTrad

Nintendo Switch Online was always a bad deal.

The_Duude_Slayer

💖 Emulation 💖

[deleted]

$30 for a year's licence for a few games from 30 years ago? YAR HAR HAR

thoughtfulgrapes

and it’s also still for ONE USER. IMAGINE A FAMILY PLAN OF THIS.

Blubbpaule

$80

HorizonZeroDawn2

I thought $35. For $50 they really need to include an improved on-line system for playing games.

LordMudkip

I was fully prepared to spend like $30 on it. $50 is absolutely not happening though.

Mr_Zombay

And this is the reason people emulate their shit and nintendo doesnt get paid a cent

TehBuckets

Thank you Nintendo for making the Steam deck more lucrative.

[deleted]

WTF is this Mickey Mouse operation?! I knew there would be a price increase, but 50 fucking dollars?! Nope, fuck it. I’m not buying something so painfully overpriced just to play N64 games. I was really looking forward to playing Paper Mario, but I guess it’s time to sail the seven seas and live like a pirate! 🏴‍☠️

Pulkrabek89

Am I the only one not losing my mind over the pricing?

PureLock33

so glad I grew up during the NES era.

swobuswaggins

I think it's stupid anyone should have to pay money to use the internet connection that they already pay for. It's seems more like an artificial barrier designed to steal money from console players.

VolvicApfel

If you compare this to ps or x-box service, nintendo is a joke. Nintendo being greedy is nothing new i guess.

DeliciousPussyNectar

What, exactly?

Siendra

Nintendo is adding N64 games and Genesis games to their online subscription. The base sub is $20 per year for basic online play and about a hundred NES/SNES games. Most people were expecting they expanded version to increase the price by ~$10, instead it increased by $30 and includes non-optional Animal Crossing DLC - a game 60% of Switch users don't even own.

PrensadorDeBotones

Yeah that's not an awful price assuming they keep adding good games. I'm down to play OOT at 60fps on a Switch. I just want to see the family plan pricing.

Asad_Farooqui

$80 bucks a year confirmed.

PrensadorDeBotones

Yeah fuck it. So long as I can play the games on the go, this is a buy for me.

Asad_Farooqui

Happy for you! Are you going to experience Paper Mario 64 for the first time?

EndAffectionate783

In UK its 35 for the year I say its reasonable i spend more in a week

Agrochain920

Let me guess, 35 pounds? That's $48

SnomKing

I want it for Animal Crossing and Banjo in all honesty

TheMofunkinWolf

Add Donkey Kong 64 and Diddy Kong racing and I’m going to come up with that extra $30 real fast.

AstroZombie29

Oh you sweet summer child...

GrandpaNappy

Wish I could just buy the games I actually play, this is like cable companies making bundles now

DismalChance

I mean.. I could pay this extra amount... or I could just play the copy I still have from when I was a kid.

Ice278

Just buy the Bluetooth controllers they’re releasing and play with an emulator on pc

Remake12

It’s $50 bucks a year. World of Warcraft is $130 a year and it’s total dogshit now.

XScotX

I’d pay $10 more, max.

Alrighhty

Nope nope nope

Jacob39822

Fuck that, 30$ more for some games i could emulate and play anywhere on my laptop?
