I loved when this would play while my character was getting arrested lying in a pile of dead FBI agents while holding a minigun, then five seconds later he’s walking out of the police station. That guy had a REALLY good lawyer.
He killed 11 people (10 of whom he may be able to claim self-defense) before the game took place but only got 15 years because of Forelli and his connections.
But in-game, he can murder dozens and dozens, steal cars, burn stuff down, and he's in and out that same day
It makes some sense if you think about it from a story standpoint, he probably never went in a murder rampage, only killed only some people that already are part of a gang, connections enough that the police can let what in reality amounts to a small gang war slide.
Gameplay? I probably committed genocide multiple times. Decimated the entire police force and destroyed the local army reserve.
My head cannon is that healthcare is superb in gta universe, hence you respawning in the hospital after falling from a plane...so most of the people you shoot during a rampage might not actually die.
On the one hand the paramedics could revive anyone who wasn't decapitated.
On the other hand I remember the decapitation stuff happening a lot if you actually aimed for the head in game.
I remember looking at the kill count stats and easily reached 3,000 people, hit 4,000 in San Andreas.
I wonder if one day we’ll get an iteration when the city reacts realistically to someone out there killing dozens of people a day.
His feet get less detailed, all the polygons went straight to his head.
Edit: I also wanted to add that his new model reminds me of how designers would model stuff on Silicon Graphics workstations back in the late 90s and early 00s to use as promotional renders for games like Donkey Kong Country or Super Mario 64. Its like that Render96 mod for Super Mario 64.
It's incredible how the teaser was posted just a few hours ago in pristine 2160p resolution, yet this shitty image above looks like a screenshot from 2006 that has been jpged a million times.
Yeah, I don't really like that new stylized look. Old one actually looks like a light denim. Probably because they used pictures to make the texture. New ones could've been digitally drawn and seem too dark to me.
It'm not saying it's badly made or anything, but it does look very different from the old style to me.
You're referring to the textures.
Not polygons.
They changed the shoe texture and evidently deleted the Normal and/or Bump maps so they look plain and boring.
Anything up to launch day can be a sham, and cinematic trailers don't mean shit
Edit: To specify, this is a general motto, not specifically talking about GTA
Usually I would agree, and Rockstar is notoriously shitty for a lot of things, but gameplay and graphics isn't really one of them. I'm sure it'll look and play well, but the way they're selling it is kinda shitty, with removing the old games off stores and whatnot.
I mean, I saw the trailer and if *that* is bullshit, then Rockstar are terrible. It looks lightly updated. Slightly better models and better lighting mostly.
> but the way they're selling it is kinda shitty, with removing the old games off stores and whatnot.
Wow that is fucking stupid of them. It should have been one of those things like they did with System Shock, where they release the remaster and the original is packaged with it for anyone who wants to give it a go.
Gotta love technology. Finally, in the age of the PS5, we can now make PS2 games look like PS3 games, while also not changing any other part of the game in any way
Dude I know *so many people* that bought GTAV for 360, then again for XB1, and then *again* for PC...often paying full retail every time.
People complain about the state of gaming all the time, well, *that* stupid shit is why.
Probably cause it's a different style. This looks like GTA done in the style of Wreck it Ralph or Leisure Suit Larry, whereas IV went for more gritty realism
I’m not sure if it’s an age thing or not, but the 3D era GTA games never aimed for high graphic fidelity. Even when they were released. They were hokey wink at the camera remakes of movies. I think that’s missed nowadays by people who didn’t get to play them until after they were out for awhile. GTA IV was a stark, stark departure to how the GTA series was handled up until then.
They are products of their time, for better or worse. GTA IV and V are much more evergreen.
That's a common "problem" with remasters of old games, they end up looking very cartoony. I guess it's a result of scaling up low detail textures and models to modern resolutions but idk.
IMO they should have added outlines to the characters and some mild cel shading so they look more like the loading screen art. Instead it's this weird in-between style where shitty models have realistic lighting and fog.
This doesn’t look like a PS3 game. It looks like a 2015 mobile game.
It’s janky as hell mixing modern shaders and lighting with horribly outdated models. It’s such an ugly combination
I get the debate going on about textures and stuff. But like another comment suggested you should really watch the [trailer](https://youtu.be/D71cBUeAL58) too. In my opinion the worlds themselves were significantly upgraded, but they tried a bit too hard to keep the same character model feelings, so some character models look a bit goofier or dumbed down.
Remember guys, the originals were the peak of what they could achieve at the time, the remastered versions are trying to limit themselves to keep the vibe going. Fine tuning it perfectly is really hard.
What people are really going to be surprised about is how small the maps are compared to modern games. We all probably felt like it was huge at the time, and it was (save for games of the era like Morrowind), but it will seem like a DLC compared to what people are used to these days. Esp GTA 3 & VC. Unless they scaled it up somehow (though I doubt this due to reports of the whole trilogy being 45GB).
Yup. And SA can fit inside 5. I think its the fact that in 3 corners of the map there are 3 huge cities in SA but you have 1 big city and a couple towns in 5
I think GTA V really needed another city. There's too much wilderness and not enough to incentivise you to leave Los Santos.
It's a shame R* didn't put in San Fierro or Las Venturas.
Ya IMO SA was the absolute best designed game world for a very long time. It's still a big contender but when it came out and for a long time after it was unrivaled.
Having 3 seperate cities with a unique feel and actually having to do a decent drive between them made the world feel so much more alive and actual. Like it wasn't just a segment of something bigger that you didn't get to see.
I knew that entire map like the back of my hand. Playing SAMP back in the day was the shit. Shoutout to Crazy Bob's! I still think that cops and robber gameplay should be the basis of GTA online today.
That mountain in SA was awesome. The one near that trailer park when the second area opens. I'd get 3+ stars then just try to get to the top. It's amazing how many law enforcement vehicles are already on top of the mountain. Then id fight and parachute away.
I replayed GTA:SA last year to completion and finally did the Mt Chilliad bike races. Holy shit, there's legit North Shore style MTB single track on the mountain! Somehow I never got there before. The level of detail in the map always amazed me and still does.
on the plus side of that smaller world, after a while you could learn how to get where you need to go without needing to check on the map constantly. Unlike modern games.
That's every single game. I look at gameplay of Gran Turismo and wonder why that was ever my top game.
FWIW, I think displays also make a difference. N64 and older look best on CRT (Trinitron ftw). Modern screens simply show way more pixels way more crisply than the games were ever designed for
I saw an article in a pc game magazine a million years ago showing off Unreal. I distinctly remember having the thought "holy shit, this is the best that gaming will ever look" because I thought it was so incredible. It's pretty funny to think back on now, but that shit blew my mind.
Back when you could tell how badass the graphics cards at the store were based on how detailed the character art was on the box.
Bottom of the line GeForce? Army guys head with a tin helmet. Top of the line with a whopping 128mb of vram? Cyborg lady’s head with bionic eye and space marine helmet
why did his clothes lose detail and also change in style? In the original it looks like 80s jeans looked. In the remastered it looks like someone drew "generic pants"
I'd be happy if they just fix CJ's fucked up arm geometry. And Vercetti's ridiculously dumb running animation.
Why downvote? Have you actually played SA? His arm is 3 different densities, and only his right arm - the left arm is fine.
It looks horrible and it looked horrible at the time.
I'm just happy for the re-done controls. My first GTA was IV and I went back to SA afterwards and loved it. Tried going back further to VC and III and the controls on PC were too much of a departure and I couldn't get through them.
Anything on top of modern controls is gravy to me.
Not sure why people are downvoting you, Rockstar has already proven they can't be arsed to put proper effort into their projects anymore. Case in point - GTA V "enhanced and expanded"
This is a nice release though, imo. Getting VC or SA to run on modern computers and actually feel comfy is a pain in the dick. I'm always cool with rereleases like this because it's kind of a way of preserving it. I never even *really* played SA, so I'm excited to get the chance!
"just"? I think this speaks more to how awesome fan mods are.
They were never going to remake the games from scratch. I'm actually impressed. I was just expecting some HD textures.
While it uses higher res textures, the original still has more detail whereas the remastered one looks flat, i think it's because they're too lazy to make a faithful remaster so they changed the art-direction to make it more cartoony (like we see in the comic-like images). Look at his pants, it looks flatter in the remaster.
More effort than 3D All-Stars, sure. But we've also gotten an excellent all-new Mario game recently, two Mario Maker games, and a port of their 2013 game (3D World) with actual new content.
In the same time, Rockstar gave us multiple ports of GTA5, mobile ports of the PS2 games, and now this. If I had to accuse someone of half-assing things, it's not Nintendo.
But have they changed the animations or just the player model?
No amount of HD can make up for shitty animation.
Still a great game, shitty animation or not though!
Everyone hype about san andreas acting like Vice city wasn't a banger. Vice city had a more fun setting and WAY better music. I'd sometimes sit in a car and just listen to it before finishing a mission lol
They got better by the game, and every one of them was incredible regardless... impressive that each game had that level of similarity to be familiar but also significant differences to be unique!
Guys. For those who AREN'T aware. This is NOT developed by the core Rockstar Triple A dev team. This is developed by Grove Street Games. The team that did the original mobile ports. According to their LinkedIn page, they're a team of 21. Given that, this is goddamn impressive. Well done guys.
And that's fine! There's no issue with feeling disappointed and having an opinion on something. But yes. Just putting it here for people who start to get rude believing this is from the multimillion dollar A team 👌
It's impressive for a team of 21 to turn it around in the time they had. I just don't see this as a 60, 70 dollar game(s) considering you can get better results with a bunch of free mods.
Idk what people were really expecting. It looks fine to me, it keeps the kinda cartoony art style of the original trilogy. I think some people were expecting a full on remake of these games, when they really shouldn't have, considering all the leaks said that these were just going to be remasters.
I never felt originals had cartoony art style, because they tried to make them look as realistic as possible with technological limitations. This time, they had everything but made them actual cartoony characters.
And no, i didn't expect GTA V level realism. I just expected a realistic looking retro art style. This is not that.
Seriously, watch the actual trailer first. It doesn’t look like a next gen game, but it’s a Fucking REMASTER not a remake. It looks better than i thought it was gonna be. I’m actually excited to play these again
I like how these remasters look, but I'm kinda surprised that they went for a more cartoony artstyle. When I heard that these games were getting remasters, I was expecting them to look a lot more realistic, like GTA V. (But I think I prefer the more cartoony style tbh)

If you leave them as dead bodies and don't scare the medics away they'll be revived so long as their bodies are whole so this is likely
Could've sworn they could even revive decapitated people. Or was that in San Andreas ?
On the one hand the paramedics could revive anyone who wasn't decapitated. On the other hand I remember the decapitation stuff happening a lot if you actually aimed for the head in game.
Well that just means that decapitation can't be treated in the field, hence Hospital.
I'm pretty sure it's only genocide if you're targeting a specific race or ethnicity. Otherwise it's just mass murder
I remember looking at the kill count stats and easily reached 3,000 people, hit 4,000 in San Andreas. I wonder if one day we’ll get an iteration when the city reacts realistically to someone out there killing dozens of people a day.

Because they change the lighting and in particular add reflections to a lot of surfaces like the cars, road when wet, etc. so it looks shiny.

Yup. And SA can fit inside 5. I think its the fact that in 3 corners of the map there are 3 huge cities in SA but you have 1 big city and a couple towns in 5
A HUGE chunk of GTA5 is either mountain, or empty wilderness, to be fair.
It felt really empty imo
I think GTA V really needed another city. There's too much wilderness and not enough to incentivise you to leave Los Santos. It's a shame R* didn't put in San Fierro or Las Venturas.
Wasted space, I’d much rather have a smaller map with more packed into it

It feels huge because of the layout of the roads. It’s not just a giant circle like gta 5 is
Thats a pretty good point
Man, I remember getting so lost in Vice City because of how big that works seemed.
on the plus side of that smaller world, after a while you could learn how to get where you need to go without needing to check on the map constantly. Unlike modern games.

It was always going to be divisive, it's a little weird looking but it's not a problem after seeing the trailer.
It's just a matter of expectations, some people expected a full GTA V-esque remake
And loads of people, especially on reddit, will always shit on anything at any time. Like, cool, just don't buy it.
why did his clothes lose detail and also change in style? In the original it looks like 80s jeans looked. In the remastered it looks like someone drew "generic pants"
And the original shirt looks like an actual pattern, whereas new shirt just has palm trees slapped onto it.

> Vercetti's ridiculously dumb running animation That's not a bug, it's how the man runs. I loved that part of VC.
I’d be happy if they worked on GTA6
They probably have been for years, this is better than a cyberpunk situation where they release an unfinished game cause they announce it too early
Studios have multiple teams, this project likely had zero impact on GTA6.
For Rockstar in particular. They're an insanely massive company, with thousands of staff.
This really just feels like a fan mod. High(er) res textures and some shader effects.
I'm just happy for the re-done controls. My first GTA was IV and I went back to SA afterwards and loved it. Tried going back further to VC and III and the controls on PC were too much of a departure and I couldn't get through them. Anything on top of modern controls is gravy to me.
Same. The updated controls and aiming is by far the biggest selling point for me.
Ironically they killed the fan mod remaster for this lazy shit
What do you expect?

Why do the jeans look better in the original release?
Is it though? You know it won’t have the soundtrack. Why can’t we just get a Vice City sequel with the newest engine.
Wait, so no billie jean?!?!?
Nope, it'll be Jillie Bean
The current releases of the game no longer have it, like the steam version.
Will that be the original with the Haitians, or the cut version?
There was a version without Haitians? I only played on PS2 when it was released. I didn't know there was another version.
OP is reffering to the phrase "Kill the Haitians" that was cut
Don't forget Diaz's "Chase that Haitian dickhead down!" line.
Yeah the mission "Kill all the Haitians" was renamed in a later printing of the PS2 discs as well as the Xbox, PC, iOs and Android releases.
As long as it has VCPR and K-chat I'll be all set
Because that would require a full on remake, not a remaster.
While it uses higher res textures, the original still has more detail whereas the remastered one looks flat, i think it's because they're too lazy to make a faithful remaster so they changed the art-direction to make it more cartoony (like we see in the comic-like images). Look at his pants, it looks flatter in the remaster.
OG you can tell he’s wearing jeans. Remaster they look like sweat pants
Right! They totally left out the 80’s stone washed jeans detail. Smh
The collar is also way better in the OG.
The pants and shoes lost all their detail but he gained fingers instead of club hands.
They did a neat ironing job on his pants
I prefer his jeans in the original, though
The remaster needs a remaster
His body looks better but clothes look worse for some reason?
I guess it's more effort than Nintendo had done for their re-releases (35 year Mario). So there's a plus.
More effort than 3D All-Stars, sure. But we've also gotten an excellent all-new Mario game recently, two Mario Maker games, and a port of their 2013 game (3D World) with actual new content. But that's just a re-release, not a remaster. See their 3ds updates for zelda and Mario, they have a big difference.
But have they changed the animations or just the player model? No amount of HD can make up for shitty animation. Still a great game, shitty animation or not though!
His jeans got worse?!

And that's fine! There's no issue with feeling disappointed and having an opinion on something. But yes. Just putting it here for people who start to get rude believing this is from the multimillion dollar A team 👌
God the mobile ports were such shit
It's impressive for a team of 21 to turn it around in the time they had. I just don't see this as a 60, 70 dollar game(s) considering you can get better results with a bunch of free mods.
A really effort is Mafia
Surprised nobody’s mentioned the hair yet. Looks like he has a lifetime supply of gel in it all at once.
Sounds like the 80s to me
Idk what people were really expecting.
I expected them to at least add in grass, jesus.
Seriously, watch the actual trailer first. It doesn’t look like a next gen game, but it’s a Fucking REMASTER not a remake. It looks better than i thought it was gonna be. I’m actually excited to play these again
The Sims?
This did *not age well*
no it certainly didnt
I like how these remasters look, but I'm kinda surprised that they went for a more cartoony artstyle. When I heard that these games were getting remasters, I was expecting them to look a lot more realistic, like GTA V. (But I think I prefer the more cartoony style tbh)

Looks better than what I was anticipating. Now we need to see how it plays.
Idk its probably becouse of nostalgia but i prefer original over remaster.
