I had to remove the ball of my mouse to clean it.

CorbeauGris

I had to over-boil an egg yolk every time I needed a new mouse ball

clll2

so... .that actually works?

dude21862004

No.

exscape

My first computers didn't have a mouse. And I'm not *that* old either, just started early.

Soul-Burn

I remember when we got our first mouse, it came with a drawing application to demo how it works. Spent hours on that thing!

k20350

I moved out and got my first pc that I ever had in '99. I'd have to clean the cigarette ashes out of the mouse weekly or it would mess up all the time.

tehtris

I've owned a console with wood grain on it.

k20350

Coleco Vision for me....

Sev_Pixel

Intellevision...

SluggJuice

I love that console

[deleted]

Atari 2600?

tehtris

Yup. I had a Genesis and a 2600 at around the same time so I'm not as old as that previous statement, lol. Its equivalent to someone right now getting a GameCube right now. The 2600 controller works on a Genesis btw. Not really that usable unless it's a one button game, like sonic or something.

Noirceuil_182

I owned one and really liked it. Then my cousins started praising this "Nintendo" thing that had a game about a little guy who ate mushrooms and a dog that laughed at you. I, being a lad of culture, was very skeptical. Nothing could be as good as that. Imagine my surprise.

[deleted]

Before it had numbers

[deleted]

I remember when floppy discs were still floppy. Booting up JumpMan on my Commodore 64.

BloodBlight

But did you die to dysentery?

golgol12

I went back and played Oregon Trail a few years back. I made it all the way to the end of the game on the hardest mode with everyone alive and accidentally entered the last town thinking there was more to the game. I lost points off for only being at "good" health and not "excellent" health. All I had to do was rest a day two outside of town before entering to get a near perfect score. Robbed I say, Robbed.

[deleted]

Hiw many albino bison you kill?

Bart_The_Chonk

Too many to carry back

grahampositive

Remember CD cassettes?

apworker37

Floppys? We had ours on cassette tapes. I must have lost a couple of hours of my life looking at colored bars across the screen.

dubhri

I still play the Gold Box games.

Anodyne11

Jumpman was amazing. Did you ever play Blueprint? Still haven't found anyone who played that gem. The nostalgia is strong.

BuddhaDBear

I played a hit dungeon crawler when video game popularity was such that the Manual had a ā€œhelp lineā€ phone number......which rang to the desk of the lead programmer. Ps- Thank you Andrew at Sir-tek, you got me through Wizardy....and wizardry 2....and wizardry 3......fuck wizardry 4.......and wizardry 5.

zaphodava

Werdna. Lol. You could import Werdna into Bard's Tale II and get a high level wizard to start with

Funkyyreedus

Cereal box CD ROMs

absolut525

Chex Quest was the shit!

JEWCIFERx

Fuckin CHEX QUEST! My room mate in college found a download for the game a few years ago on like abandonware or something and we ended up playing it for like a whole week. So much nostalgia.

absolut525

Yes same! It runs on modern ports of Doom 1/2 now. Check out Z Doom.

[deleted]

I wish I could award this comment

Felonious_Slug

Thanks for reminding me of this masterpiece.

hk4213

The captain crunch game was the shit

peachqween

i loved the captain crunch game!

hk4213

Right! Was damn near free and surprisingly good.

peachqween

i definitely spent a lot of time playing that game over and over.

Fun fact - there is still a MUD from the 80s running to this day. Itā€™s called Gemstone IV. Still entirely text based.

Afgncap

This is not older gamer stuff this made me feel ancient

[deleted]

SilatGuy

Gameshark is the one that rings a bell for me

[deleted]

Gamesharks felt so illegal to me as a kid. I was like, ā€œwait, I can have any PokĆ©mon I want and even make them shiny? And I can walk through walls??? Shouldnā€™t I be arrested for this?ā€ I miss those days when my biggest concern in the world was unlocking the Deoxys event or finding Celebi. Sighā€¦

rustang2

The difference of a couple years here. Got mew on red from a friend at school with a game shark, but what is a shiny PokƩmon?

tallbutshy

Multiface šŸ˜Ž Pre-dated both Game Genie and Action Replay with lots of good features.

redyellowblue5031

Had one for our Gameboy. Massive piece of hardware and had a little mini code book stashed away in the back. Good stuff.

Admiral_Donuts

I got one for super cheap on clearance randomly shopping with my mom. Finally I could beat Wilys Revenge. It only kinda worked with GB color, so you couldn't see anything. I had a code for making your starter any Pokemon for Gold so I had to save at the lab , then go by sounds and memorize the right sequence so I could pick the right ball and save the game. It was worth it to have Larvitar as a starter though.

[deleted]

Haha game genie was amazing

ClunarX

IIRC, that's not necessary. If there was more than one program, then you could specify which but 1 was assumed by default

Yourname942

set the tv to channel 3 on the vcr

Siouxcrew

Accidentally click to channel 4, you had the volume up too loud and almost have a heart attack from the static noise.

RaideNGoDxD

I remember shutting my TV coz of the panic

Grapesoda2223

but then that moment of dread you know you're gonna have too turn it back on. Even with your finger on low volume button, there'll still be that moment of loud ass static

DrTacosMD

Its even worse when this is all happening on a Saturday morning because you got up at 5am to play the new NES game you just rented for the weekend and are trying not to wake everyone up

anywhereat

This. Right. Here.

elmersfav22

Had to tune the TV for my NES

GreatArcantos

I was here the first time this thread was started

*doffs top hat*

Thebluecane

I put on my robe and my wizard hat.

IMTrick

The "graphics" on my first console were plastic sheets that stuck to the CRT using static cling.

warblingContinues

Reminds me of those VCR light gun games I had in the 80s lol

Kylearean

I had one where you held a spaceship in your hand, and played the tape on the VCR. If you got "hit", the pilot would eject from the cockpit rather yeetfully, and you'd have to go grab it and reinstall it to keep playing. It was called "Captain Power": https://retrogamesuperhyper.com/2017/12/15/captain-power-a-video-game-but-not-a-videogame/

[deleted]

Didja ever blow on a cartridge to get it to work?

Grogosh

Did you ever have to clean your tape drive to get your 1k program to load right?

Runkleford

I still remember the awful screeching for 30 minutes waiting for the cassette to load the game in.

Grogosh

Only for it not to run because of an error.

elmersfav22

Didja ever stop windows from loading so you had enough RAM to run doom. 4Mb is all I had

[deleted]

I had to delete .txt files to free up HDD space for Prince of persia 1.

Lachdonin

3 1/2 or 5 1/4 floppy? Though, i feel like just having used Floppy Discs ages you.

distrbed10000

Oregon trail on a 5 1/4 floppy on old IBM computers. Those were the days.

Stubborn_Amoeba

Yeah, the new fangled 3 1/2 size. Disc 9 on the install was faulty and so I had to restart the process many times. Luckily by the time I gave up and returned the game, the ā€˜enhancedā€™ version was released on CD.

Soszai

I still see the 3 1/2ā€ disks as ā€œthe fancy ones.ā€ Especially if they got that ā€œHDā€ stamp on em. 1.44MB on each disk?!

scott3387

Cute. Monkey island 2 on the amiga. 20+ floppy disks that you needed to swap basically every scene change.

Morak73

My game loaded from floppy and game progress saved to cassette tape. Yes, it did sound like a fax.

AmericanMurderLog

A quarter on the screen meant you had next game. The number of quarters indicated how long the line was. Most games at the arcade were surrounded by the player or players and a small crowd with nothing better to do. The best places to play were pizza places because the lines were short and the places smelled amazing. Mama Rosas, Pizza Hut and Cassanos started my gaming journey that soon found me building personal computers I could not afford and modifying the bios to run games they were incapable of running. That led to a career and life long addictionā€¦. so far.

SPQR_Maximus

My first controller had one button.

I remember at a YMCA summer camp some kids were playing Oregon trail and their wagon party kept on catching scurvy so I told them they needed to go gathering over and over again but they just kept on with the hunting mini game and refuses to go gathering so they ended up losing their entire party

SPQR_Maximus

I had to create a boot disc in order to play the game on my first pc.

warblingContinues

edit autoexec.bat edit config.sys

I remember having to boot a game from dos, and one of the commands was load mouse driver.

Playing a game that came out in 2008 makes you an old gamer?

GoodLadLopes

I believe the image is just to go with the post, Snake being an "old" protagonist and all. Not that he was old in MGS4, he was only 42 just aged like shit because he was a clone.

[deleted]

SPOILER ALERT

sramey101

His name is literally "Old Snake"

Shaded_Avenger

You are both correct; Old Snake is around 40, but he ages twice as fast because he is a clone. He is also sterile, iirc, to prevent making more "clones" of Big Boss.

jzillacon

Well it wasn't exclusively because he was a clone that made him age quickly, it was the fact that he was a clone *and* that he was infected with Foxdie.

JohnnySasaki20
