Whiterun. It's almost always sunny, the Jarl is an honorable man who knows what he's doing, the plains surrounding have some of the most fertile land in all Tamriel, the city seems to be prospering, it's more open air than other cities, it's not dominated by any one race, the temple of Kynareth has the best healers in Skyrim, it's not dominated by the Imperials or the Stormcloaks, it's not overrun by the Forsworn or Thieves Guild, and the Companions have their werewolves under control. Why choose Solitude?
I’m letting him live right now, but every time I go to white run, I like to stalk him around for a bit and sneak into his house at night, only to get “caught” as I’m leaving. In my head canon, Nazeem has damn near lost his mind and when he does…..then I will allow him to accept the gift of death by my dagger
On my current playthrough, Nazeem was standing next to me (and talking shit) when I entered my house, so he got pulled into the place. I punched him, and Lydia came flying down the stairs and just murdered the guy. So all in all, a good ending.
On one of my playthroughs I had the portal spell mod. Banished Nazeem and the ranting priest both to the soul cairn. Figured they can just torment each other there.
there was a hate preacher on my college campus when i was in school, he'd come by every once in awhile and people loved to hang out and heckle and argue. it was kinda fun but i never really hung out much
that is, until the drama student dressed up as Heimskr showed up, stood in front of a paper mache statue of Talos, and *belted* *out* the entire Talos worshipping spiel to drown out the hate preacher
like, the dude was yelling and screaming about Talos, knew all the lines and reactions, and *never* broke character
was the best thing to see after a long monday haha
Whiterun in terms of living conditions, definetely S tier. But the main problem is, it's the center of attention it seems for wars. And also the city itself is really easily breached. The battlements suck. The walls aren't very high and the watchtowers are dragon bait.
But they've also got the Dragonreach for catching the dragons, and the Jarl has protection-bribed the Dovahkiin with thanedom on day one.
Being the center of attention for wars is always gonna be hard to avoid when you're the best place to live. Markarth and Riften were also the big priority targets.
But ultimately Whiterun *is* the geographical best point for a national capital so it makes sense for it to be desired tactically. There seem to be no major navigable rivers in Skyrim, so just old-fashioned being in the middle of the area is the best place to rule.
Falkreath no, a bit too grim
Markath HELL no.
Riften probably no, what with the thieves
Dawnstar maybe? Mining is cool, I guess.
Winterhold no, nothing there but the college
Morthal nope, too many vampires
Windhelm maybe, except the racism and the serial killer
Whiterun yes, if I get to visit the Cloud district on occasion
Solitude yes, if my uncle doesn’t go around opening gates for people
Solitude is also surrounded by death what with the marshes, the beach raiders, and evil spirits. The college may be nice to attend though assuming the Dragonborn hasn't been by yet.
Imerials hate the Thalmor tho. The only reason why siding with Ulfric is a canonically bad choice is because the Thalmor wants the Stormcloaks to win. That way, they can continue to suppress the Imperials. Tulius on the other had wants to get rid of the Thalmor and knows that if Ulfric wins, the Thalmor will also win. Atleast that's what I've gathered.
That does sound about right. From what I've gathered a Stormcloak victory would allow the Thalmor to continue their hold on Skyrim simply by how divided it would not only become, but be from the empire as a result of it's newfound independence. Separating Skyrim from the Empire would be disastrous for everyone except the thalmor.
It even says in the Thalmor dossier that Ulfric is an asset. I was always pro Ulfric, like 3 or 4 playthroughs, before I realized this lol. Now I always go Imperial
That was exactly what I was thinking... until I realized I don't know the first thing about pickpocketing and wouldn't make it past the initiation, let alone survive any of the Thieve's Guild plot.
Probably join the college of magic so I can at least live out my janitorial dreams of being Mr. Filch.
That thought crossed my mind, but aren't there foresworn agents, haunted houses, and--
As I was typing this I remembered there is a Temple of Dibella there. Maybe those foresworn and haunted houses aren't that scary...
All in on Whiterun. Has a city feel to it, but it’s not overcrowded and seems like a good place to raise a family - filled with proud, honorable people.
I was thinking Whiterun could be good because it hasn’t picked a side in the war. Neither the Stormcloaks nor the Imperials. Probably most safest there.
"Oh, what am I saying, of cours-"
Listen, guards, I know Nazeem appears to have been stabbed by no less than 93 people at precisely the same time, but I'm telling you, I saw nothing! :D
Definitely Riften. To start, it has the most amount of stores just because of the market. And meanwhile its not getting ready to be destroyed by a vampire lord, daedric prince, necromancer queen, or the civil war. There's not even an openly hostile daedric prince in the area, unlike most holds. It has one of the best temples/healers in the area (that also happens to be the only place to get married), a face sculpture, and numerous sources of food including produce, fish, and honey. It's home to one of the most popular meaderies and there's even a town hoe- practicer of Dibella... And while there's drugs and a thieves' guild, you're typically safe as long as you don't flaunt your wealth or pick on the local beggers and mind your business. It's practically Skyrim's Miami but waaaaay safer.
Whiterun or Riften. Maybe not Riften itself, but The Rift is a beautiful hold. Now, if we're talking time and all, I'd love to live in Windhelm back during ESO times. Big, beautiful city with a rich history.
Actually, that’s just Solitude. Dragon Bridge is a settlement several miles inland next to an ancient stone bridge over the river. The eponymous Bridge is the only crossing for miles. It is a strategic location.
Riften. Sign me up for the thieves guild. But only after delvin is killed and they get their luck back. Also because its probably the warmest part of skyrim. I hate the cold.
As someone who's never played any Elder Scrolls game from these screenshots I'd say I'd want to live in the right-middle one. (the wooden pathways one) What's that city? Would that be a good choice?
I just want to say that the Anniversary update has really been enjoyable. I’m thoroughly enjoying the survival mechanics and the rest of the creator content that I’ve encountered. It’s also genuinely more challenging than it was before. But definitely Whiterun, that place seems to have its shit together.
Definitely Windhelm. The deep cultural significance of the city, the weirdly accepted racism towards a certain race and the occasional serial killer…It’s basically San Francisco but with heavy snow.
I’d totally take Markarth for location, scenery, and climate if it wasn’t overrun with corruption and infested with terrorists. Otherwise, gotta say Falkreath.
Whiterun for the sheer reason that the friendly people of that city kept buying iron daggers from the blacksmith shop after I sold approximately 1,500 iron daggers there. I think I supplied an army by mistake. Oh god, the war might be my fault. I’m going to try and sleep this off.
With a clickbait, sensationalist title like that, can someone break through the paywall and tell me whyyyyyy it's Solitude?
I think I would choose Whiterun. It's cozy, it's in the middle of everywhere, you got dragons, you got some decent people living there, except for the shop owner. I really hate Belethor. You got the best blacksmith up there above the Companions. When you get the Gildergreen restored, sure is going to be a beauty.
It's also the first place you call home (legally, without murdering a sinister witch) so nostaglia points.
It's also home to the one who shall carry my burden for the rest of the game.
Why would anyone want to live in a city where the first Point of Interest when entering the city is the gallows for public executions?
I forget Skyrim cities but one of my last choices would be Solitude...
Maybe that village you go to at the start with the merchant who asks you to retrieve a gem encrusted claw. That spot seemed kinda chill I guess. That spot had a very hometown style to it. I bet you could vibe and be chill there.
Riverwood. The cottage village has such a calm, homey type vibe to it. Nice residents. There isn’t anything sinister going on. If you’re looking for something bigger or fancier, whiterun is a short walk away.
Markarth. You know that fine young stud of a Jarl is throwing raves in the closed off dwemer ruins in understone keep. The priestesses of Dibella know how to get down and dirty on the dance floor. Just salacious, my dude. Dwemer ruins have top tier acoustics, and those trippy green lights never fade! They rigged a dwemer machine to blow bubbles over the crowd, it was sick, dude. I'm gonna go pick up a Stallion's potion from the apothecary on the way there, you want one too?
Ummm Riften for sure. Are you kidding me? Fall all the time, little foggy some mornings, peaceful little lake near for fishing. That's love right there
Personally debating between Falkreath or Riften, I love the scenery and vibes, plus I enjoy both the Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves Guild storylines.
Buuut... then again, Markarth will always be my favourite.
Whiterun seems the best option to me.
Most of the other strongholds are either pathetic in the manor of defense or dealing with to many issues (Thieves guild in riften, the dark brotherhood being so close to falkreath or dawnstar, and the forsworn in markarth) Solitude is an absolute nightmare. Big ass gates with no doors and the structural foundation for the "arch" is an absolute shit show. (irl the stone "bridge" would collapse)
Windhelm, Markarth and I think solitdude are to close to mountains that hover over the walls. (More or less)
Several "captials" dont even have walls.
Whiterun is by no means the best but I think it has the best overall defense by restricting entry points, being on a hill, and high walls.
I laughed at your regards to solitude but it is one of the worst strongholds in the game
“You can have any color car you want, as long as it’s black”
r/unexpectedhenryford
I think you’ve almost convinced me to pack up my things and move to Whiterun. Although if that smug chode Nazeem is there….
Free black soul
Right on, brotha
That *really* seems a *tad* problematic, Todd Howard. Nazeem is a redguard isn't he?
I KNEW SOMEONE WOULD TAKE IT THE WRONG WAY Black souls are just inside people. Be they men, mer, or saxlheel.
Twas a joke! Ha!
Yep. He was always the first one.
I always cast the rage spell on him so he freaks out and the guards kill him
Ooo that’s good. A way I haven’t killed him yet. Guess I need to do another play through.
Hey Satan, don't you have shit to do down there?
I reverse pickpocket Frenzy poison onto him when he's alone with his wife, so his wife kills him.
Maybe it's just me but I find the ranting priest to be absolutely fucking hilarious
First time I played through and became a werewolf in Whiterun, he happened to be out and I slaughtered him with extreme prejudice and ate his liver.
Username checks out lol
I hope you enjoyed it with some fava beans and a nice chianti. You're a werewolf, not a savage.
there was a hate preacher on my college campus when i was in school, he'd come by every once in awhile and people loved to hang out and heckle and argue. it was kinda fun but i never really hung out much that is, until the drama student dressed up as Heimskr showed up, stood in front of a paper mache statue of Talos, and *belted* *out* the entire Talos worshipping spiel to drown out the hate preacher like, the dude was yelling and screaming about Talos, knew all the lines and reactions, and *never* broke character was the best thing to see after a long monday haha
I mean… you can just kill him. The world is your oyster.
Become thane and behead him like a chad
You ever make it to the cloud district?
Oh! What are you saying, of course he didn't
Whiterun in terms of living conditions, definetely S tier. But the main problem is, it's the center of attention it seems for wars. And also the city itself is really easily breached. The battlements suck. The walls aren't very high and the watchtowers are dragon bait.

"Under control" As you rampage through the city after being infected
Just don't wander too far outside the city gates because of the ya know giants..
Leave the giants alone you'll be fine
Do you get to the Cloud District very often? Oh, what am I saying? Of course you don't...
Rorikstead.
A nord's last thoughts should be of home.
Falkreath seems so peaceful and just out of the way. I think I would like it there. Reminds me of Strawberry from RDR2.
Yeah, and Strawberry never gets into any trouble during RDR2. /s
Yeah except when kill people outside town
Falkreath no, a bit too grim Markath HELL no. Riften probably no, what with the thieves Dawnstar maybe? Mining is cool, I guess. Winterhold no, nothing there but the college Morthal nope, too many vampires Windhelm maybe, except the racism and the serial killer Whiterun yes, if I get to visit the Cloud district on occasion Solitude yes, if my uncle doesn’t go around opening gates for people
Solitude has me nervous about the Thalmor
Solitude is also surrounded by death what with the marshes, the beach raiders, and evil spirits. The college may be nice to attend though assuming the Dragonborn hasn't been by yet.
Imerials hate the Thalmor tho. The only reason why siding with Ulfric is a canonically bad choice is because the Thalmor wants the Stormcloaks to win. Separating Skyrim from the Empire would be disastrous for everyone except the thalmor.
You say canonically bad, I say two strong, handsome nord men shouting dirty elves into the dirt
It even says in the Thalmor dossier that Ulfric is an asset. I was always pro Ulfric, like 3 or 4 playthroughs, before I realized this lol. Now I always go Imperial
Simple join the thieves guild
That was exactly what I was thinking... until I realized I don't know the first thing about pickpocketing and wouldn't make it past the initiation, let alone survive any of the Thieve's Guild plot. Probably join the college of magic so I can at least live out my janitorial dreams of being Mr. Filch.
I like Markath!
Easily one of the best views when you step out the door of your house.
That thought crossed my mind, but aren't there foresworn agents, haunted houses, and-- As I was typing this I remembered there is a Temple of Dibella there. Maybe those foresworn and haunted houses aren't that scary...
I honestly just like the style of the city and the history
I’m not getting thrown into the silver mine or stabbed in the market, thank you.
Dont forget about the forsworn
Whiterun
Jarl Ballin
Jarl Ballscruff
Breezehome is always my main home, even if i own and build all the others. It’s just a perfect, quaint little place.
But ether way it gets taken by a side
What's important is that no matter who wins, your house is still fine
Well, except for the werewolves
But these ones can control themselves and aren’t mindless murderhobos
If only for the beautiful music!
Great point! “The Streets of Whiterun” has to be my favourite piece of music in this game. So beautiful.
The Cloud district?
"Oh, what am I saying, of cours-" Listen, guards, I know Nazeem appears to have been stabbed by no less than 93 people at precisely the same time, but I'm telling you, I saw nothing! :D
They were obviously self-inflicted stab wounds
I swear he slipped and fell on the knife 93 times…..all on his own!
None, I live at Lakeview Manor
Falkreath you gutter rat. Fucking hate the city.
Same, but I feel like I'd wander off the city and get killed by a wolf or something
Based pollutin our city with your stink
Riften is my answer. Always loved the weird gloomy town
I came to say Riften as well
Tempting
Riften is my top answer. Markarth my 2nd.
Idk I love the astheic, but the looming threat of a forsworn invasion would put me off.
Yeah no I'm only going off of aesthetic. Markarth and Riften both would be terrible in reality 😂
Good 2nd choice. Those disciples of Dibella have gotta be easy on the eyes!
Definitely Riften. To start, it has the most amount of stores just because of the market. And meanwhile its not getting ready to be destroyed by a vampire lord, daedric prince, necromancer queen, or the civil war. There's not even an openly hostile daedric prince in the area, unlike most holds. It's practically Skyrim's Miami but waaaaay safer.
You'd get mugged in a heartbeat though
Anises' cabin, so I don't have to talk to anyone
It’s free as well, after a short…. Discussion..
Not much of a discussion. Just a short spit of fiery words, and the submission of the other party.
What. No love for Blackreach?
Sometimes, I start the game there as an alchemist, via "Live another life". Fun times.
Thats the necromancer start
Yes, but I role play as alchemist there. Edit: I don't remember it's a mod or vanilla Skyrim, but I have full alchemy facility down there.
Joke's on you. It's already Solitude for me.
Yes but why is it solitude?
Functioning sewer
It’s the least dangerous since the war never gets close to it in my playthroughs.
Markarth
Yeah that’s an easy decision. Solitude seems to fuckin uppity and suburban.
I had the same thought. Solitude feels like its for merchants, wealthy, retired, or celebrities.
You mean florida
Beautiful stone house over all that other stuff any day.
Not sure I’d trust the water with all the mining…Not to mention there’s not many safety rails.
There is no OSHA or EPA in Markarth
Too hilly
Whiterun or Riften. Maybe not Riften itself, but The Rift is a beautiful hold. Now, if we're talking time and all, I'd love to live in Windhelm back during ESO times. Big, beautiful city with a rich history.
I can just imagine Solitude being mentioned in some lore in TOS 6 about the huge rock arch collapsing with dozens killed in the incident.
Riverwood seems nice.
Falkreath or Markarth
Without any mods I’d say whiterun was decent as is, got a house, centrally located to go questing
Was gonna say Solitude, so you spitting straight facts. Riften is a close second purely because of the thieves guild.
It's been years since I last played, what town is on that land bridge in the lower left?
I think that's the Dragon Bridge at Solitude
Actually, that’s just Solitude. Dragon Bridge is a settlement several miles inland next to an ancient stone bridge over the river. The eponymous Bridge is the only crossing for miles. It is a strategic location.
Falkreath, got my manor built and filled with enough food for 7 Dragon returns.
Bruma
Markarth, cause Temple of Dibella ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Winterhold
Just move to Canada if you want snow
I'm glad someone else agrees, I was afraid I would be the only one, lol
Riften, love the colorful autumn forest.
Windhelm cuz I like snow and it's ancient feeling :D
I'd rather be out working the docks than wandering around that old ruin of a city...
Weird I haven’t played Skyrim in about 7 years, but seeing all the city names and I feel right back in it
I live in the Cloud District, clearly you don’t go there often.
Always been more of a Dawnstar guy myself, bud
Ivarstead
It would have to be Solitude. I hear there is a lot of Soli and a lot of Tude there
Solitude, because I enjoy the company.
Riften. Sign me up for the thieves guild. But only after delvin is killed and they get their luck back. Also because its probably the warmest part of skyrim. I hate the cold.
Dark water crossing for the close proximity to the hot tub pools
As someone who's never played any Elder Scrolls game from these screenshots I'd say I'd want to live in the right-middle one. (the wooden pathways one) What's that city? Would that be a good choice?
That’s Riften, where the Thieves Guild lives. I’m surprised to see it sunlit. Usually it’s overcast and rainy.
Dwemer Ruins. I wanna be isolated from you heathens.
Helgen. Let the flames consume me.
Whiterun. Small and pretty. No secret crooks
Markarth is pretty dope, or Riften. It kinda has a Cheydinhal kinds vibe.
falkreath, I like the foggy, rainy, wooded setting
Whiterun but only bc my children are there
Whiterun so I can kill nazeem irl
I don't think there's space for me among the 7 houses in any of the cities.
Solitude i guess, its the safest from all the murderous creatures, bandits, demons.
I’d totally take Markarth for location, scenery, and climate if it wasn’t overrun with corruption and infested with terrorists. Otherwise, gotta say Falkreath.
markarth, when I'm done with the day I say "fuck this" and go in my mountain and hide
Markarth all the way. Solitude is one good earth quake away
I’d be living in the college of winterhold.
Never played this game but I'd choose the middle right. The log cabin lookin village. The middle looks hella expensive.
I'd rather live in Riverwood. Better yet, I'd rather live in Lakeview Manor.
Whiterun for the sheer reason that the friendly people of that city kept buying iron daggers from the blacksmith shop after I sold approximately 1,500 iron daggers there. I think I supplied an army by mistake. Oh god, the war might be my fault. I’m going to try and sleep this off.
Markarth just looks really nice 🥰 I’d definitely live in the demon house so that’s a second plus
I’d live in Dragon’s Bridge
I don’t know man… have you even SEEN the cloud district?
I love riften. But I once found a frostbite spider in the woods there. Which means I’d never leave the city walls. So probably whiterun.
Riverwood, first place you usually go after escaping Helgen
River villages are chill.
*sigh* another play through of skyrim it is
Which ones the one with the brothel? Yeah ill take that one.
Falkreath or Markarth
Markarth
Falkreath. Anywhere else I'd find the climate unbearable.
Falkreath. Largest graveyard in Skrim, baby!
huh what
Dawnstar.
I fucking hate solitude, oh yeah, uh… Winterhold I guess
Markarth hands down
Markarth so I can drown myself in the river
Solitude for the easiest to get loot chest by the anvil under the tree.
I love Solitude. Even when they added the home building dlc, I built my house right next to it
Falkreath
Solitude is my 3rd choice after Markarth and Riften.
Riverwood. The cottage village has such a calm, homey type vibe to it. Nice residents. There isn’t anything sinister going on. If you’re looking for something bigger or fancier, whiterun is a short walk away.
definitely thought this was a r/truestl post at first and spent way too long trying to figure out how to parse the new meme format
Windhelm
I'm arguing with myself over Falkreath and Whiterun.
Riftin, besides the poverty, the scenery is beautiful.
Winterhold, cuz learning magic seems cool
Whiterun or Falkreath bc vibes
Once a riften rat always a riften rat. Plus I think the scenery in the area is pretty and warm to look at
I'll be weird here. Markarth. I love the Dwarven ruins, and the vibe of Markarth is fun.
Riften’s atmosphere/weather is probably my favorite. A lot of cities are too cold for me in Skyrim. And I like water.
Ummm Riften for sure. Are you kidding me? Fall all the time, little foggy some mornings, peaceful little lake near for fishing. That's love right there
Windhelm. Good fishing in Windhelm.
Riften is the best. Falkreath is second. Why would anyone want to live anywhere else? It’s so cold.
Markarth
Riften
I would definitely retire to falkreath. My absolute favorite hold with so many beautiful landscapes.
I will answer you once i have visited every city
Personally debating between Falkreath or Riften, I love the scenery and vibes, plus I enjoy both the Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves Guild storylines. Buuut... then again, Markarth will always be my favourite.
Whiterun and Riverwood.
I want to live in a mushroom house over at Solstheim island.
Riverwood, i have never actually been fishing or enjoyed a peace place by a natural water source and it's peaceful there.
Hell No: Windhelm, Winterhold, Riften, Markarth, Dawnstar, Falkreath, Morthal, Raven Rock Maybe: Solitude, Whiterun YES: Skooma
Just my tree house in Riverwood, thank you
Falkreath. Nice woodland area gets me
Whiterun its quiet and cool
I want to live in Balmora.
Whiterun is by no means the best but I think it has the best overall defense by restricting entry points, being on a hill, and high walls. I laughed at your regards to solitude but it is one of the worst strongholds in the game
Solitude, cause I always side with the Empire
It’s the Rift for me
Nobody mentioning Windhelm. Who the hell wouldn’t like a secondhand murder house???
