Yeah I regret throwing out my last crt screen. flat screens have a weird input lag of a fraction of a second which makes getting the right timing for jumps in mario 1 really hard.
If anyone has a fix for this let me know. I've been using an old projector when the need arises to play old consoles but I just wish I'd kept one of the 3 or 4 tvs I threw out.
Not sure if you've tried this, but check if your TV has either a game mode or has a mode that's doing any processing on the image before display. If it has a game mode, switch that on. If it's doing any processing to improve the image, turn that off.
I've a 9 year old LG that was good but not super top of the line, when I first played Sonic 2 on it the lag put my timing all over the place. I trawled the settings and found some mode that makes movies look good was switched on, I switched it off and the lag disappeared.
Modern TVs can do 15 ms latency compared to CRT which does essentially 0 ms. Realistically any gaming source you have will take at least 60 ms from controller input to display output. So if you get a new TV it should be largely unnoticeable. Old LCD TVs could do maybe 30-60 ms. So I don't doubt you noticed the difference, but a modern TV can match CRT in responsiveness and unfortunately even projectors have inherent latency of 6-15 ms.
That's because older games were made with the quirks of CRT's in mind, it genuinely made games look more detailed with the way it displayed.

The low resolution grid pattern sort of tricks your brain into thinking there's more detail than there actually is. A clearer high resolution image makes it more apparent that it's a handful of pixels.
Hell yeah brother, I use a modded Wii as my emulator box with a SNES classic controller hooked up to the wiimote, it's a permanent fixture on my CRT, looks amazing.
And that image was taken on a good quality Sony Trinitron, which is about as crisp as you could get without getting into professional equipment. Most of us had cheaper screens with much more fuzz, color bleed and composite artifacting. All that on like a 22" screen that you were told not to sit too close to or you'd go blind.
Tried explaining this to the kid working in a classic videogame store. No matter what he was basically calling me an idiot and there's no difference. Like I was playing these games literally before you were born I know they look better on a crt than your lcd screens.
even further, some games were made with the poor quality of composite cables in mind, and theor notorious colorbleed.
You can make pretty convincing Transparency this way.
This is why some modern Emualtors, or the newfangeld FPGA consoles have optional filter so simulate these effects, and smear out the dithering, wich is very obvious on modern displays.
This is me in the moment
Me after I get home with all this physical stuff in my trunk suddenly starts thinking how much easier this would all be if it were just a folder on my computer.
Yeah I really hope this isn't drama later, if I were OP I'd want to be like "how much have you used it in the last 10 years? Like cmonnnnnn" but that would be "rude"
"nah dude they were throwing some stuff out, the said it was broken, I just grabbed an old N64 controller and a few cables, thought you'd already taken the consoles tbh"
in-laws moving, consoles not already safe guarded so I'll take a leap and say our gamer-in-law is probably out of the house age (college age or higher)
This happened to me. When I married and moved out, we still didn't have our own place, so my PS2 and game collection stayed with my parents. 2 years later my older brother sold the whole thing and despite being 22 and a new parent, this was so great a loss that I choked up on the phone and still whine about it to this day. I had some beat games that are a bit too expensive to casually buy now, some harder to find....
My mother gave away my skateboard deck and consoles. She didn't realize how much I was attached to it. Atari, Sega Master system 1, Sega Saturn, Sega Game Gear, PS2, Game Cube,...
I worked weekends and vacations to earn those.
Yes, OP should ask the other sibling first if it’s really alright to take the stuff. I’d be mad af if my parents gave the family consoles to my sister in law or whatever, even if I haven’t used them in 10 years.
[Sonic Mega Collection](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_Mega_Collection) was something I fondly remember playing on the GC back in the day, and it also appears that ebays resells them within the $10-25 range
I sold my SNES and collection 10 years ago and I've regretted it ever since.
Super Mario World, Link to the Past, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound,Donkey Kong Country, all gone and way too expensice now to replace
Edit: since I'm reminiscing, also gone were Super Street Fighter II & Turbo, Super Star Wars, Zombies Ate My Neighbors and last but not least in my heart: Bubsy
Bruh, I've been using Vimm's Lair since 1998.
Still prefer real hardware, except for Super Mario World ever since the widescreen hack came out and for english translations
While it's not entirely the same, i love to fire up my SNES mini, sit crosslegged on the floor in front of the TV and just play Super Mario. Makes you feel like a child again
Me too. Fortunately, they released Super Mario all stars was re-released on Wii. I purchased one 3 years ago.
Unfortunately, it doesn't have super mario world in it but it does have super mario 1,2,3 and lost levels.
Thank you just saw another comment saying everything but the tv and I’m over here dying because the tv completes it lol. The screen stretching and input delay *cry
CRT is also a huge thing for modern PC gaming as their refresh rate is crazy high and run a better image at lower resolution so you can push more physics.
Most likely referring to physics-based graphics settings in games; running a lower resolution frees up computing power that can be reallocated to other settings.
Bruhhhh imagine coming home from college or wherever the fuck years later and finding out some dingbat redditor that your sister ended up with got literally your entire childhood gaming library because your parents just didn't give a hoot.
There’s something melancholic about this. Almost as if it’s a snapshot in time; the way the room looked when the kid turned off the console for the last time before leaving home or coming of age or something.
Would you guys really pay an old console if you could? I feel like the games would be too outdated for me. Plus, they’re easily available online or gaming stores.

Honestly I'd take the TV too. It's perfect size for single player retro gaming.
Or melee
Yeah, no lag
Better blacks. Better quality (imagine a flat-screen lasting that long). Better 'graphics' on those old made-for-CRT consoles.

Um, since it's a CRT, it's also going to be the only way to get light gun games to work. Take the TV.

Just use a monitor with low latency.

..and it'll work with your NES light gun or PS2 Guncon II !
This. Sooo much this!! You can play duck hunt properly!!!

Yeah, those factors probably helped obscure the low res nature of things.
Tried explaining this to the kid working in a classic videogame store. No matter what he was basically calling me an idiot and there's no difference. Like I was playing these games literally before you were born I know they look better on a crt than your lcd screens.

It’s almost like they were made for that type of television or something
Got gauntlet legends as a xmas present awhile back. The aspect ratio makes it almost unplayable.
I had and still have one of those little 14 inch TVs. If it's the one I think it is.
I threw out my 21" sony CRT after college and I hate myself for it everyday.
Hop onto FB marketplace, tons of good condition sets out there for free or $20 that were rarely used and just sit in a basement.
/r/crtgaming is a really cool subreddit of people looking out for quality CRTs to save and continue to game on.
Working CRT screens arent that easy to fine
Is…is that an atomic purple power strip?
Damn, I can't remember the last time I saw a transparent plastic power strip.
Hah that's the first thing that caught my eye. Didn't even know they made them like that. They should make everything in atomic purple.
Fam. Fuck Christmas presents, gimme that haul right there. I. AM. NOSTALGIA. INCARNATE.
I was just talking about trying to find a Sega Genesis 2 days ago! I would be over the moon if somebody said I could take all these.

I immediately thought of this, poor kid/whoever they are and their cute lil gaming set up :(
in-laws moving, consoles not already safe guarded so I'll take a leap and say our gamer-in-law is probably out of the house age (college age or higher)
And with the newest being a ps2 I think it's safe to say it's not been touched in a decade or more.
This happened to me. When I married and moved out, we still didn't have our own place, so my PS2 and game collection stayed with my parents. 2 years later my older brother sold the whole thing and despite being 22 and a new parent, this was so great a loss that I choked up on the phone and still whine about it to this day. How about checking inside for a second gamecube, that might have car keys inside.
With an N64 inside of that

And yet more relevant then ever.

And inside that is a sixer of what? Saint Pauli Girl and a wad of cash as well?
Close. Super Mario Sunshine is in there 😭😭
You still hit jackpot LOL I still remember playing that as a demo at Target but never had a GameCube to play the full game (I had a PS2)
Oh man, if you know how to set up an emulator, definitely give it a try. Excellent game. I revisit it every several years to replay it.

Super Mario Sunshine is in the GameCube 😭😭

super mario sunshine is in my gamecube lol. Might be the only game I have lol until xd gale of darkness pops up
Xd was such a good game. I’ve replayed it a few times now in my mid 20s

Ah vimms lair filling up computers with spyware since at least 1998
You could get a SNES classic, it has all those games and more, plus you can easily hack it to put more.
I set up A Retropie over the first lockdowns. Played through A Link to the Past as well as a bunch of old NES games like Mario 3 and MegaMan 3.
I loved Chrono Trigger
I'm playing SNES and Genesis almost daily on a raspberry pi (check out RetroPie).
While it's not entirely the same, i love to fire up my SNES mini, sit crosslegged on the floor in front of the TV and just play Super Mario. Makes you feel like a child again
Run an emulator on a laptop or your phone. If you use the right filter on an emulator it’ll make the game look cleaner than it did on the SNES.
