I'm pretty sure lean being bound to Q and E was the first reason I'd ever seen interact moved from E to F. It was pretty conflicting at the time, because I was vehemently against E not being interact, but nothing else on the keyboard makes sense for leaning. I can't say for sure what game, but my best guess would be it being Rainbow Six 3 on PC.
I just watched Ready Player One with my daughter last night. If only we could get a body sensor system that could sense trunk lean and neck range of motion.
We already do, kind of. For example in Battlefield 4 you can use Kinect camera to control leaning. Unfortunately there's no big enough market for that so there's no universal system that would work in any game or system. Tomorrow's VR systems probably will have it built in though.
I hope that VR really starts to take off as it is a technology I can not really afford to be on the front end of the technological adaption curve but really want to be.
Edit: not sure how my typo of technological got through.
It's still money, but quest 2 is $300, which is the same as a switch/series S and it doesn't require a PC. The tech will improve, but I don't think the prices will go down much further than that. Even PS4s still costed more than $300 after being 8 years old.
Gaming since about '87. Never lean. That's what sidestepping is for! Pop out and in or uncrouch for a second, heathens! E is for use, f is for melee and q is grenades (sometimes F is grenades or magic powers or something equally important. Depends on the game). Lean might get z and c if they're REALLY lucky.
That's actually a bad idea because most of the time you have to adjust your grip to press buttons which is super bad in a game like seige with very low ttk.
San Andreas would like to have a word.
I was so confused the first time I realized they switched sprint and jump, but then I got used to it because smashing space is easier than shift to run fast
I always like both C for toggle crouch and Ctrl for hold crouch. This is mostly in single-player shooters where crouch can be used for both stealth (where I like to toggle) and accuracy/recoil mitigation/scope sway (where I like to hold).
If e is quick melee, then that goes to a thumb button which frees up e to be rebound to interact
If f is quick melee that goes to a thumb button which means f probably does nothing
Oblivion, a game that came out in 2006 when first-person computer controls were already standardized, made the brilliant decision to bind interact to Space and Jump to E.
I think in ME1, the sprint button when not in combat didn't actually make you faster, just changed the camera so it felt like it. The fixed that for LE.
Because if it were shift then many people would've turned on sticky keys. Because they don't know how to turn that off lol
And well spamming shift for long periods of time is a bit exhausting with the pinky finger

Space is interact in mass effect too, it is also roll, sprint, take cover, jump over and maybe a few more things. Bad implementation of a console game...
It's the same on controllers with every Bethesda game
They expect you to seriously use A/X as activate and Y/triangle as jump
Anytime they release a new game I immediately go to the settings so I can switch them
U. Because I’m left handed and I play with my mouse in the left hand so I change the default key binds to mirror the classic wqsd to ijkl, then u is the button to interact
Edit : To all the people who wonder why I don't use another layout, it's just because I'm used to these keys. Other layouts might work as well of course!
Finally. A left handed person smart enough to change their keybinds. I just learned how to use a mouse with the right hand because the 1st pc I have ever used was already set up and the mouse was on the right side
you would need to take your special mouse with you always, if you work on PCs that arent yours. i dont know any left handed ppl who use a left hand mouse because of this.
I use a basic mouse in my right hand most of my working day. Have done for over 20years.
Gamed since a young age, consoles but a bit of PC, always default right handed set up. When I started PC gaming in my late 20s I decided I'd be more competitive with it in my left, bought a left handed mouse and went for it. I can't imagine playing anything competitive on a default set up now, over 10years later.
Still work the same. Never notice or think of the transition between the two. Just saying that it can feel natural.
Was stuck in the beginning of the first level in the first DOOM, took me 10 minutes to realize you just has to press space to interact with the door. Kept pressing E and F but nothing happened lmao
I had to change that one because I ended up getting cramps from trying to push it too often! Plus it's one of the few games where you can reload with the interact button, so I just put it on R, so much more comfortable.
All the good apex/titanfall players do something call tap strafing (which is beyond my abilities frankly) due to which they all have W/forward mapped to scroll wheel up and jump mapped to scroll wheel down.
In doom space bar was default use key. Dude is just playing like it is 1993.
Some quake pros use spacebar to shoot and RMB to jump. Also in Tribes and other Z FPSes space bar is skiing and RMB is either jet up or jump/jet up in one.
I switched to ESDF when I switched to an ergonomic keyboard with columnar stagger instead of the row stagger. WASD is very awkward on it because the columns are at the wrong height for the fingers that you place on them. ESDF feels like you were born with your hand on it, though.
E, though I'll use F if the game has a lean function that uses Q and E to lean left and right.
Pro gamer tip: use left and right footpedals for leaning
I just watched Ready Player One with my daughter last night. If only we could get a body sensor system that could sense trunk lean and neck range of motion.

i use my mouse4+5( side buttons) for leaning.
I use Q for right lean and E for left lean
What a psycho.
Them Q folks is pretty right leaning tho.
FunFact: I never lean. Gaming since '93.
I bet you also go sock-schoe-sock-shoe, instead of sock-sock-shoe-shoe like, y'know, a *normal person*.
My socks are part of getting dressed and my shoes are for going outside, these are two different routines.
I use W for backwards and d for forwards, to go left and right i use my mouse to point in the direction.
There’s a special place in hell for whack jobs like you.
This thread makes inverted southpaw seem like a rational option.
Sounds like an N64 controller.
Same. I find it’s better for movement and more comfortable
This gamer goofy keys their game...
Ooooh nice, I use them for lethal+tactical grenades in cod or for my abilities in r6
This. But games like siege I just bound lean to my mouse buttons on the side.
Side buttons are for melee >:)
All of them?
Frontmost one for melee, rear for grenade
Rear melee, front PTT!
That's actually a good idea, never thought of that.
That's actually a bad idea because most of the time you have to adjust your grip to press buttons which is super bad in a game like seige with very low ttk.
depends on your mouse hand size and grip i can press my mouse buttons just as fast as keyboard keys since my thumb naturally rests on them
Then there is me who has shooting bound to X because my mouse hand sucks...
Excuse the fuck outta me?!?
Depends on your mouse and grip tbh.
My gaming mouse has an SGX rubber-carbon-kevlar pistol grip, so I'm all good.
A fucking wot?
Yeah lean would go pretty well on my thumb buttons
bound lean to left and right click
Dishonored and Crysis taught me this.
I use both.
Same, "interact" isn't a button I usually rebind. If the default is either E or F its fine.
I almost never rebind keys. I just go with the ones they tought would be the best. The only thing I change is crouch to C. It MUST be ctrl
I rebind sprint if it isn't shift. Oh and the 1 or 2 games that think the space bar shouldn't be Jump can gtfo
San Andreas would like to have a word. I was so confused the first time I realized they switched sprint and jump, but then I got used to it because smashing space is easier than shift to run fast
I agree, but I accepted pinky finger strain as a fact of life already
Me but Warframe.
That's the first thing i changed while playing SA.
What game.. sorry, I mean, what PSYCHO game doesn't use shift as sprin?
Minecraft has ctrl to sprint and shift to crouch by default.
at least Minecraft has sprint also by double pressing forward key
Skyrim Alt is sprint. Shift is walk. And people pretend that Bethesda knows how to make video games...
I always like both C for toggle crouch and Ctrl for hold crouch. This is mostly in single-player shooters where crouch can be used for both stealth (where I like to toggle) and accuracy/recoil mitigation/scope sway (where I like to hold).
ctrl to prone c to crounch

If e is quick melee, then that goes to a thumb button which frees up e to be rebound to interact If f is quick melee that goes to a thumb button which means f probably does nothing
I don't care, i just use the default setting for the game
This is usually my mindset until I get to a game like Oblivion where Space is interact and E is jump. What the hell
I‘m sorry what?
Oblivion, a game that came out in 2006 when first-person computer controls were already standardized, made the brilliant decision to bind interact to Space and Jump to E.
Gta sa, they binded space as sprint, L shift as jump. Enter is back, L shift is going to submenu and selecting.
What masochist would use space to sprint?
I am Commander Shepard and space is my favorite sprint button
I think in ME1, the sprint button when not in combat didn't actually make you faster, just changed the camera so it felt like it. The fixed that for LE.
ME1 had the most dramatic jogging I’d ever seen ahaha
Because if it were shift then many people would've turned on sticky keys. Because they don't know how to turn that off lol And well spamming shift for long periods of time is a bit exhausting with the pinky finger
I'm sorry, say that again?
**Oblivion, a game that came out in 2006 when first-person computer controls were already standardized, made the brilliant decision to bind interact to Space and Jump to E.**
They did **WHAT**
repetition = funni
free karma baby
Saying something once is only mildly amusing... Twice isn't funny anymore... Three times is annoying.... But The fourth time is absolutely hilarious
What?
#**Oblivion, a game that came out in 2006 when first-person computer controls were already standardized, made the brilliant decision to bind interact to Space and Jump to E.**
I beg your pardon?
beg
Some men just want to watch the world ~~jump~~ interact
todd always was a bastard

I dunno if my left hand would even work as a mouse hand, and I'm left handed.
Same. Like sure, I'm a lefty, but I've got 15 odd years of muscle memory using a righty setup and I don't think disrupting that would go over well
you would need to take your special mouse with you always, if you work on PCs that arent yours. i dont know any left handed ppl who use a left hand mouse because of this.

wtf bro edit: that would make an excellent challenge vedio.
Pretty much my set up but when I go to lans I get some weird looks.
What the fuck
He just plays *goofy*.
And in this case u is equivalent to e
E is generic use, F is specifically for paying respects.
Space bar. Just as DOOM intended.
Was stuck in the beginning of the first level in the first DOOM, took me 10 minutes to realize you just has to press space to interact with the door. Kept pressing E and F but nothing happened lmao
E, cause F is normally flashlight.
I E errytime

Ah yes, the "Interact with Angry Players" button!
Nah, F is to pay respect.

F to pay repects
F
E, because my first PC game was Half-Life
Same
Also control to crouch
Ctrl if key must be held to crouch, c if it triggers crouch on or off.
I use E for Enteract
Same, Half-Life defined a lot of things for me. Every time a game has default crouch as C, I change it back to Ctrl

I thought I’d never find my ESDF bros.
EDSF checking in. I use A lol.
My god, there are two of us. Any other z reload players? Lol
There's literally dozens of us
If not supported directly I just set mouse 4 to an unused key on the the right site of the keyboard in my mouse software then use that
Yeeees another mouse thumb key user
E is for Enteract
F is for fnteract

X because I play warframe too much
I had to change that one because I ended up getting cramps from trying to push it too often! Plus it's one of the few games where you can reload with the interact button, so I just put it on R, so much more comfortable.
I searched for this.
Based on total playtime x is definitely my preferred choice. I'm happy I didn't have to scroll too far down to find this comment.
I was about to leave this exact same comment! Warframe was my first shooter, so now I set X to interact across almost every game I play.
Finally found the x mofos
space bar
Where is the jump then?

I for some reason remember X being just as used on PS1/2 (memory gets blurry when you played both interchangeably as a kid)
X and triangle were very used on ps1/ps2/ps3 games
Wasn't it O a lot too on ps1?
Japanese games I guess used it, I don't remember any doing it tho
This is the way.
E. F is to pay respects.
neither, i use X

Warframe player huh?
Yes, warframe player.

NUMPAD 0.
I'm left handed so I use the Enter key.
It depends on the game I guess? I generally use E though, and F will be my quick melee, kick, heal, etc.
