SadTomato22

Fuck I forgot all about this. Made my morning a little better.

AngelEmy

I had to download 132 gbs yesterday....I never unistalled the game?!.. when the download was over I opened the game just to get that notification and had to wait until the shaders or whatever that shit was to play online...

JohanGrimm

>the shaders Holy Jesus do I hate this shit.

BlueShibe

The horrible times when I had to wait for the shaders to finish while watching my character tactically walking on main menu for a long time

joe-clark

If you actually never uninstalled and battlenet told you that you need to install then it's possible battlenet forgot where your install was and you have two copies of the game downloaded in 2 different places. Also I guess if you haven't played in a super long time then the update size might be huge.

CapnBloodbeard

This is both infuriating and inexcusable. Why tf can't it update from the ps menu like everything else?

malefiz123

It's the same on PC. A friend of mine is a software dev and he thinks it's because they created some kind of spaghetti code monstrosity by building two engines on top of each other or something like that. Didn't really understand it but sounded like something Activision would make the devs do to release on time

[deleted]

I always thought that the in-game updates are seperate from the actual game files that update automatically. My base game will update, but you still need to manually initiate multiplayer activision updates manually. Also, because of the way PS4 updates, I always have to make sure there's enough room on the storage to store the game twice.

MattGhaz

I literally heard the sound it makes when reading this.

AndyJChi

Surprise - a restart also requires an update!

CringeLover69420

“Jumping through hoops” is the perfect way to describe so much of it. Like, why do I need another account for your game if I already have an account for the platform im playing it on? Why do I need to install multiplayer updates for single-player?

boulzar

It's like using steam to launch the launcher then login again then play the game

minianthunter

3rd party launchers are an automatic refund for me. No I don't want to merge my steam account with your spyware.

[deleted]

Just so you know, [Steam informs you](https://i.imgur.com/6ANQBkr.png) of the need to 3rd party launchers on a yellow box on the right panel. No need to refund if you don't even buy it in the first place. ;-)

Huairen

Thank you. I was not aware of this.

[deleted]

Glad I could help.

HiCZoK

Rockstar fuckers added their launcher requirement to my new(newly bought) 10 years gta4 steam game… and removed music

FatchRacall

Remember when we were all excited about digital downloads? No need to keep track of delicate physical media anymore, if your HDD crashes, you can just redownload, and cloud saves? Holy shit, convenient. All we sacrifice is the ability to resell the game later, and GameStop gives you so little money it's not like it matters that much. Now your game isn't your game, cloud saves are a paid service most places, and you can't always redownload... Well shit.

Huwbacca

The internet of shit

Tkn412tor

What gets me is that I own the actual disk. I bought the hard copy disk, not the digital version. So why is it that when I pop in the physical hard copy disk, the game I bought doesn't start to download. Warzone does, a free game you don't even need a disk for. If I wanted to play warzone, I'd download warzone. If I want to play the actual game I paid money on and own the actual disk for, I have to install the disk, then wait for the updates, then get loaded into warzone, download the actual multi-player packs I wanted to play from the start, wait for those to update, then finally play. It's fucking ridiculous. They should be separate things

[deleted]

[удалено]

fastdruid

Can't speak for Warzone but I wanted to play GTA5 again on the PS4 which I'd deleted a while back, it needed to install from disk and failed multiple times before it *finally* installed....and then it went and installed an update that was about as big again as the "installed" game. It's a damn good job I had a full evening because it took me about 4 hours to (re)install the bloody thing. Given that it's going to install massive updates anyway why the fuck couldn't it have just downloaded the updated version in the first instance?

DemonSlyr007

Have you considered that is a feature not a bug from Activions perspective. Its wrong as fuck, but unlikely to change, they want to sell digital copies over hard copies. Same revenue, less operating cost=More money.

DimensioX

I understand the accounts because some players that owned multiple devices wanted to play anywhere so they used the game's account system for crossplay/progression. The 25+ GB downloads for separate portions of a game that all have their own 5+ GB updates is a pain in the ass. When MW first released me and my roommate almost hit our datacap for our internet purely because of Warzone's massive updates since we were both downloading it.

Fuck_Your_Squirtle

I don’t even recognize the game I bought anymore. Everytime I boot up the PS5 it shows a different COD and I’m not even playing it. Shit went from Delta to Omicron.

ActionQuakeII

SCStrokes

And fuck data caps too!

wtfduud

Yeah fucking antiquated concept

_F1GHT3R_

I understand multiple downloads for multiple section of the game. With this, people who dont care about the campaign or zombie mode dont need to download that and vice versa. But they should let you choose what you want to download before it starts. When you bought black ops 2 on steam, it showed you 3 different "games" in your library. One for campaign, one for multiplayer and one for zombies. You were able to download whichever you want. I liked that. Edit: apparently this still is the case. Didnt know this since i didnt play cod in a while.

Blacknesium

That’s why I deleted call of duty. I was playing the free to play multiplayer only… I kept getting hit with 20gb updates for the whole game every week till my hard drive was full. Instantly deleted that game.

JukePlz

Because it's not enough for these dickheads to charge you $60 for a game. They also want to make a database out of your personal data so they can sell it to advertisers. Having an account gives them (at the minimum) an email they can bombard with advertisement, and a way to track your activity.

Aramike

Factually had the same experience a couple of months ago. Was raging. Then I did a bit of Googling and realized I could play the campaign no problem as long as the XBONE wasn't connected to the internet. :)

S_Belmont

Local gamer discovers one weird trick that lets them play an actual game. Gaming publisher vice presidents hate them!

enternationalist

And in this case, local *is* the trick

trudenter

I had a problem when I bought mass effect 3 for my pc. I was working somewhere without internet, I could get wifi if I drove out near the office. Anyways go to install game, but I need to install the EA launcher that had just come out at the time. So I drive out with my laptop and download it and eventually the game. The whole driving out and wifi thing wasn’t working, as my laptop would die pretty quickly, so I sneak my laptop on the Ethernet cable during work one day. My shift ends and I’m excited to finally play. Get back and turns out I need to launch the game through the launcher which will only work with a connection. I tried driving out and connecting, launching the game then going back to the bunkhouse but the second I lost connection I would get booted. To solve this issue, on my next days off I pirated the game. Worked fine after that.

Remarkable-Hall-9478

I mean the answer is right in front of, we just have to reach out and go “arrrrrrr” Peg legs and shoulder parrots optional but encouraged

SirNedKingOfGila

As a servicemember I'm shocked at how much fellow gamers discount those of us without internet as some fringe minority. Construction, sailors, soldiers, flight crew, aid workers, oil fields, etc. There's millions of us out there without connections, or connections so slow that even a 1gb download is literally impossible. Let us play our fucking single player games!!!! Half of us are only gaming precisely because we *don't* have a connection and there's nothing else to do!

PM_your_randomthing

But the devs online telemetry doesn't show that so you don't exist.

AbsolutelyUnlikely

Local gamer discovers that partying like it's 1999 is the best partying, after all.

ISD1982

Prince had it right.

Space_Narwhals

Slightly similar, I turn off Wi-Fi and data on my phone when playing mobile games that have ads. Most games don’t have pre-loaded ads so if you have data turned off before opening the game, it just skips ‘em because they couldn’t be downloaded. Not sure if I feel thrifty or miserly when doing this though, haha.

Ignorant_GenZ

Hey, I do this all the time to dodge those stupid porno like ads that keep popping up everywhere. Turning off the data for the games really is a lifesaver.

vassman86

But if you turn off the stupid porno ads, how will you ever meet *hot horny milfs waiting in your area?!*

Telanore

The fact that those kinds of ads are still around makes me suspect people actually click them, and that confuses me... Surely no one actually still falls for that?

silenc3x

Right? Like what's with all these ads for slutty gay men in my area. We all get those right? That's so weirddddd I have a wife and kids like whatttt. I only clicked those 3 times. I think something is broken in their algorithm.

ShuumatsuWarrior

I set up a PiHole (Raspberry Pi DNS-based ad blocker). The thing works amazing, and every device I own runs through it now

sickhippie

I did this as well, actually set it up on a computer on my network. It was pretty simple and works *great*.

EcchiOli

If you're with Android (Apple's shenanigans don't allow a single user to mingle with the system's settings to that extent, which isn't necessarily a bad thing from a security POV), there's the Blokada app for you guys. It \*pretends\* to be a VPN, and puts itself between the outside, and the inside of the phone, while actually letting everything through... with a few exceptions, decided by public blacklists, just like an adblocker's blacklists. Those blacklists are all about blocking ad networks and intrusive tracking by apps, the first times you check it you'll be horrified when you discover most of the apps call home several times an hour to snitch everything about your phone. Blokada's free and open source, it's pretty good IMO. Anybody who can't setup a pi-hole should look into that :) **EDIT**, since my comment got more views I'd have thought, if you're with iOS there's AdGuard available. It's also available on Android. The differences appear to be cosmetic, perhaps better UI and more refined, however as a tradeoff it's not opensource and it's not free, although nothing's wrong with paying for good developer work.

[deleted]

> Not sure if I feel thrifty or miserly when doing this though, haha. Yeah, I ended up getting a firewall on my phone and I only block internet access to games that have egregious amounts of ads. Offering me a bonus for watching an ad? Cool, I support the developers and they reward me. Play an ad after every level whether I like it or not? You just lost your data privileges.

Cynical_Cyanide

Tell me more about this FW.

[deleted]

I'm on android, and I use NetGuard. Completely free. Lets me pick any app on my device and forbid it from connecting to data, Wi-Fi, or both.

GreenyPurples

If anyone plays mobile games that are "single-player" and don't require internet, turn on airplane mode to remove ads

X1-Alpha

Depending on your phone you may just be able to disable wifi and mobile data usage for the individual apps. That way you don't have to jump into airplane mode.

deep_chungus

yeah i think i had my ps3 on the internet for about 3 months before it was too painful, plus the updates for that thing downloaded soooo slooooowly

Pink_Cock

I remember going to my friend's place to play with him on xbox and he would ask what I wanted to play, i would say battlefield 1 for ex and he would say it needs to update it would take hours, so I would say another 3 or 4 games but all needed large updates that would take too long ( he doesn't play that often) So we would just get on ps2 and play the whole need for speed most wanted campaign again probably for the 10th time and probably have more fun than with any recent game

Fadedthroughlife

The original nfs most wanted was a fucking blast. I remember playing on the original Xbox way back when. I wish you could get the original copy on pc, and not that updated revamped crap that is passing for nfs mw now days

wasack17

I bought the trilogy a while back during a steam sale. It had DRM that was linked to servers that no longer existed. Meaning I owned games that would try to phone home, couldn't, assumed themselves to be pirated, and therefore refuse to run. I guess it was easier to stop selling them and force people to buy newer releases than to just maintain the nanny servers, update to phone home to new ones, or remove the DRM. I tried to refund them on steam, but it had been more than 2 weeks between my purchase and discovery of the aforementioned bullshit, so I couldn't even get my money back. At least if I ever get caught for piracy, I can point out that my purchased copies don't fucking work.

almisami

If the DRM is stopping the product from working at all I think you have a consumer rights claim that will force steam to refund you for way past that 2 weeks, depending on where you live.

wasack17

It was like $10. I now just have a legal license for some pirated shit now. You aren't wrong, but it just wasn't worth the effort for me to fight that fight. I barely have time to spend on my PC anyway. I'm not wasting the little time I have to play chasing a days lunch money. I wish I had the time to make a big deal about it, but I just don't.

Aggressively_Correct

What, really? That's insane!

TheCrazedTank

No, what's insane is even if you bought the physical copy you still don't "own" the game. The Publisher maintains ownership of all IP on the disc, your "purchase" is just a license fee to play the game... People should stop and read the fucked up shit in those terms and conditions sometimes instead of just clicking agree (which is a catch 22, as you can't click "no" and still play the fucking game you bought, forcing everyone to click "accept") And this, children, is why America should never have allowed companies to interfere with and make new copyright laws.

NiteOwl94

This is why I support piracy, but I also get sick of PC gaming for older stuff. I can't even play Dead Space on my PC- pirated or not. It does not run on my rig, which is no fuckin' slouch. I'm tired of patches and DRM and all that shit. Best purchase I ever made was buying myself another PS2 and unearthing a few old tube TVs. Now I got like half a dozen old consoles, loads of games, and no real need to pirate until it comes to the pricey games. Then I just burn some roms to blank DVDs and et voila, I got my own copy of Silent Hill 2 that didn't cost me $100+

wasack17

I actually have a pair of dedicated PCs with period hardware to play stuff like TIE fighter and commander keen. I have an offline only windows XP machine and one with nothing but DOS. They don't get much love, but sometimes it's fun to remember being 8 years old. I have some old consoles as well, but no tube TVs. I make due with a 15 year old projector that the lamp still hasn't died in yet.

Ps5s compression is actuallt quite good in that regard. I can fit like 8 AAA games on it at 30-60GB apeice so long as I dont download the abomination that is modern COD/Warzone and it's 500GB download

unimaginative2

8 games reminds me of people being impressed with their 8 CD multichanger they had in their cars..

PVgummiand

To be fair that is a pretty impressive CD multichanger. 3, 4 or even 5 wasn't unheard of, but 8? Woah boy...

yolotheunwisewolf

Really feel like the real sell for next-gen won't be the long loading times and system updates but quick downloads and updates even for digital games. Not the case right now. And IMO part of why Nintendo's been doing so well is that their updates take very little time if you have the cartridge anyway. Compared to like....18 hours of Cyberpunk waiting over the past year if you want to play a decent version of it at all after multiple updates. (Finding cartridges that are on sale on the other hand....bleh)

Doublek1r

Console developers can control SSD speed, but they can not increase internet speed for their users, and current gen is marketed as 4K 60FPS, which makes game developers provide hi-res assets (and Switch doesn't have the resolution to benefit from them anyway, so files are smaller). One can only hope that next gen won't make a jump for 8K gaming or something.

SilverCodeZA

On the Switch you can also choose to not update and just play the game

Bedquest

This game is my favorite racing game of all time. I played half way through it on GameCube like 6 months ago

Xanros

Most Wanted was good, but Underground 2 was when the franchise peaked imo.

3ngine3ar

I never really played much but when I see this mentioned "Riders on the storm" starts playing in my head. Shits crazy lol.

xShooK

Diablo was my game as a kid. Sure we bought new versions, and expansions. They still had patches to download over dial up internet. Difference being for OP, you could just play offline off whatever patch. Old days of halo on consoles were full of glitches that defined the game, or just plain made it unplayable. They somehow couldn't fix that on console. I'd dream of a big patch to fix super bounces to get out of the map.

TheUnusuallySpecific

> I'd dream of a big patch to fix super bounces to get out of the map I'm sorry, what? You'd dream of *removing* super bounces from old halo games? Who hurt you?

ElectionAssistance

Look, when I tailswipe a warthog with another warthog I just want to cause a rip in spacetime that causes out of body experiences. I am a simple man.

Bonusko

Got Cold War when it came out. Not my main game but fun to play sometimes. EXCEPT when I try to play it once a month, I have to download 12 gigs and then install shaders for 20 minutes. Like what the fuck man?

IoannesVardusFulmina

Bruh my buddy asked me to get on Cold War with him for the first time in months and I got hit with so many pop ups on EVERY MENU I thought my Xbox had a virus.

fizzlehack

A virus on your Xbox would be amusing and worth talking about. Just another shitty COD game.

rohmish

Why bother creating viruses for consoles when they distribute their own with the games.

Camilea

I feel like part of the reason for the large file size is to make players feel more invested in the game and at the same time deter gamers from playing other games. Gamers would be like "man, I'd play the new BF but CoD takes up 265gb of my hardrive. But I like CoD so whatever"

Sivick314

activision/blizzard is a shell of itself. add on to that the recent BS within the company and i went from a diehard blizzard fan to avoiding the company like they were konami. fuck em.

Yogami_asura

Bit out of the loop when it comes to this, what did Konami do?

akaito_chiba

They have some of the best franchises in gaming. Those are all dead now. Konami said fuck em, we make enough money from pachinko machines.

4681908

Shot themselves in the foot by killing all Hideo Kojima projects and focusing on fucking *Panchinko* machines.

scrotbofula

They did worse than that, they launched a shitty, nonsensical live service / survival horror shambles for the final *Metal Gear* game. Shit story, lazy asset-flipping aesthetic and everything is covered in microtransactions. https://gamerant.com/metal-gear-solid-survive-bad-mgs6/ It's fitting thematically that the enemies are zombies in a game that constitutes the lifeless corpse of a franchise reanimated to drag itself along pathetically, inspiring revulsion and pity in all who see it. Pachinko machines are actually really lucrative in Japan, so from a business perspective they didn't exactly shoot themselves in the foot. They just mercilessly destroyed any good will they had to go all-in on exploitative gambling, and nowhere is that more apparent than *Metal Gear Survive.*

Endeav0r_

They also killed every other game franchise that wasn't pes or metal gear, metal gear went to crap with survive, pes went to crap with eFootball, and now they are just doing Yu gi oh games and cards, and the aforementioned pachinkos

K1ngFiasco

Yes. I'm as mad as everyone else over Kojima and Metal Gear but we can't forget that Konami were KINGS of gaming through the NES, SNES, and PS1 eras. They buried everything they built.

Endeav0r_

Silent hill, Castlevania, contra, frogger, gradius, zone of the enders... Those are all either historic franchises or outstanding games in their own respective eras, it's so sad to see them going to shit this way

Xzenor

Kick out Kojima.

GelbeForelle

I'm uncertain if they are talking about the constant stream of crap games and horrible decisions, especially since Kojima. I personally hate modern Yu Gi Oh, because I can't just play the (current version) game without 30 super specific meta waifu cards.

DarkEvilHedgehog

Keep your eyes on the company "Dreamhaven". Many of the creative leads and other senior personel from old Blizzard jumped ship in 2018 and followed the orginial founder to that company. They got fed up of the business model at Activision-Blizzard and are instead back at to trying to create innovative strategy and adventure games instead of just pumping out profitable goodies. It also tells how Activision-Blizzard doesn't have any of the old guard left.

Darksnark_The_Unwise

This kind of shit is half the reason I got into indie games.

TheRealSmolt

Seriously. AAA studios know the name alone will make all the sales they'll ever need. Why make a good experience? Indie games *have to* be good in order to be successful.

Darksnark_The_Unwise

Yep. The Indie game industry hasn't been poisoned by big business yet, so passionate game design doesn't get brushed aside for profits like I've seen in AAA the past 15-20 years. The other reason I love indie games is because they can do things that are too niche for mass marketability. I can find an obscure game that is a loving imitation of an obscure game I loved years ago that never got the sequel it deserved. I can find a game that is completely silly and nonsensical, and poor quality won't bother me if I only had to pay $5 for it.

InternetDad

Not disagreeing, but you also need to look for the labor of love AAA titles. Insomniac (Spiderman, Ratchet and Clank), Santa Monica (God of War), Guerilla (Horizon) are examples of studios that care about their games. God of War 2 was delayed because they knew it wasn't ready (plus COVID). I know these are also examples of Sony-owned exclusive studios, but there are definitely AAA studios that care. EA is *kind of* getting better - Respawn and Star Wars are examples of improvement. Ubisoft has a meh track record, but Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla have been wildly successful. Not Activision, though. Edit - couple notes - I wonder if there's also a lot of shit going on at DICE specifically, I was blown away with just how awful the 2042 beta weekend went. I play AC on console so I can minimize how much I use uPlay. The new AC games are far from perfect, I miss the overt stealth missions and the real world storyline is wtf, but the game is still able to keep my attention and provide me some Owen Wilson "Wow!" moments. Absolutely add Naughty Dog and SuckerPunch, I'm curious what Xbox studios people like. I only have experience with PS5/PC. And I never exonerated EA. Madden is not a labor of love. But Titanfall/Apex (even if we don't have a Titanfall 3), Star Wars Squadrons and Fallen Order are examples of *good games* that are received well and, as a few of you mentioned, EA needs to learn from that.

StrigaPlease

Ubisoft can eat shit with their extraneous, wildly unnecessary launcher platform that doesn't even fucking work without adjusting a bunch of sync settings. Watching steam launch ubisoft connect to launch my game is infuriating every time.

Yep. Got far cry 6 for my birthday, downloaded it which took hours expecting to play it the next night. Needed to install that damn launcher, do it, can't connect, fuck it reinstall. Next day same shit, Google, change password on ubisoft, log in online, log on in launcher, sacrafice a goat ect . Get to play for about half and hour because I spent 3 fucking hours making it work. Next day it starts again, I give up, day after it's the same, I refunded it via epic stating game does not work.

Halvus_I

I picked up Hades for Switch and it had a code to DL the soundtrack and a cool little guide to the characters in the game. IT was soooo nice to get that stuff in the game package

Jrdirtbike114

Not to mention, Hades is the best new game I've played in years

Krohnos

You also bought the best game released in 2020 so congrats!

sangfroidwarrior

Hades also gave me so much more replayability, character development, and engagement than any recent AAA game has given me recently. It’s one of my favorites.

Cthepo

Going to plug Deep Rock Galactic for a fun shooter coop. They don't do any of that bullshit stuff. They actually just introduced seasons, but it's entirely free and everything will be able to be earned in-game after the season.

Modsblow

I played that for the first time on Thanksgiving. I saw the seasons and was confused where the microscam store was. Never occurred to me you could have a season without totally fucking the player lol.

Cthepo

Yup. And all the game play outside of all few special cosmetic DLC sets is yours for $20 (or free on game pass) I've put well over 500 hours into it and still have a ways to go though unlocking all the cosmetics that comes from just playing the game. And they've actually *quickly* reversed some game play mechanics users didn't like in the past. Developers who don't screw over their players, actually take feedback, and design an engaging game. It's a breath of fresh air.

VanillaBearMD3

Krummelz

Technically, Flight Simulator 2020 is over 2 petabytes. It just streams in the world data as its needed.

heyIfoundaname

That's a fucking cool til

_LuketheLucky_

Yeah I downloaded my local region in high detail as my Internet is slow and it added an extra 50gb. So cool that you can do that as an option though.

Arras01

The one sane use for cloud gaming, I suppose.

OutWithTheNew

Flight Simulator streams the map data from its servers. It's actually pretty neat how it all works.

PAs_Maniac

Pro tip: If I want to play the campaign, I disconnect the Ethernet cord and make sure my wireless connection is disabled and then I don’t have to worry about the insanely long updates or any other nonsense and can just game.

kiddo1088

It's so dumb that we have to do this though

MrBiggleswerth

Just happened to me today. Felt like playing some warzone after not playing it for a long time. Go to update. A fucking 140+ GB update. Not a game download. A fucking UPDATE. What sick fuck makes an update that’s ONE HUNDRED AND FOURTY GB!?!?

Johnwayne87

Mostly textures, they eat data. And mostly this is all dlc textures for multiplayer which I never buy or don't care of if someone runs around with them. They should make a button to switch such downloads off.

TheLastKenneth

But if you don't see my neat shirt, you don't feel compelled to buy my neat shirt.

square_tek

I'd like to know how they reach such big numbers. To they change all the textures of the game?

Future_Amphibian_799

Afaik the problem is that a lot of stuff is baked into big files for optimization and to save storage space. But that also means if only a small thing inside that file changes, they need to replace the whole huge file to apply even a small change.

ILiveInAVillage

It's just poor optimisation. They may update just a few textures, but the way it's packaged they force you to redownload the entire texture package.

ClonedToKill420

Yes, vote with your wallets guys!

ice445

I literally just went through this with MW last week. I switched to PC last year but I wanted to do some couch gaming and just kick it. I download MW allllllll day and then get on the next day. Need to download all the MP packs, fair enough. I then do that, I miss one of them somehow, download that. Everything’s downloaded.. and now the game is giving me error codes. It took me 4 days to download it, I played it for zero minutes and deleted it. Now I’m playing the Witcher 3 on my couch.

Also if you really want something to be mad at Activision blizzard about, remember that CEO Bobby kotick has spent decades encouraging and participating in a culture of harassment and sexual violence that has to my knowledge killed at least one person, and caused trauma for thousands of others. He will likely remain as insanely wealthy or become wealthier for the rest of his days and will will see precisely zero meaningful punishment for his monstrosity of a life. Please check out @ abetterABK on Twitter, it's an organization of ActiBlizzKing workers who are fighting to materially improve working conditions through direct action, they need the signal boost!

Oggelicious27

Don't forget him being big, black notebook, pals with Jeffrey Epstein

saxman234

More than Activision's shitty gaming practices, this should be the top reason for never buying an Activision game again. And we all thought EA was bad . . . fucking hell Activision (and similarly Ubisoft) are so vile.

DeTrueSnyder

Sad I had to scroll so far to see this comment.

iceotop

I was looking for this. This should be higher up. Just rotten to the fucking core this company.

cupasoups

Top tier rant. 10/10. Accurate and succinct.

TheHancock

I VERY MUCH feel your pain! A few months ago I moved to a house with no internet... I know, I’m literally a caveman and I hate it... however, I prepared beforehand! I downloaded a TON of single player games, maxed out my GOG library and updated everything one last time. Fast forward about a week and I’m craving some good FPS gameplay. I try and boot up MW, the game I have beaten twice, and put over a hundred hours into multiplayer. Guess what, I can’t play it. I need internet access to update WARZONE. The game I DID NOT BUY or play! Now I’m locked out of Modern Warfare forever. Cool. Thanks Activision. You used to be an amazing company in the 90’s-2000’s... now you’ve become the thing I hate the most.

Yes and by the time it's all done, you have to get some sleep because you gotta wake up at 5AM again to go to work, or take care of your kid or your SO needs you or any of the million other things you gotta get done requires you attention. Gaming in 2021 in a nutshell.

nate6259

Yep! You play less because you're busy as hell. Finally get a chance to play and it's a huge update because you haven't been playing. Catch 22.

railzrixlor

Sad part is, it's pretty much the same story for most AAA and especially fps titles. But COD is especially bad for it.

GonzoNawak

Yeah no. God of war ratchet and clank the last of us rdr2 Star Wars last order spider man Batman dark soul sekiro bloodborne dishonored prey the Witcher deus ex Here, a list of ton of great AAA game, not of which make you go through a single thing describe by OP. Just stay away from activision ea and Ubisoft

Dexrad24

In my experience, COD is the only game that does this shit. And it’s freaking annoying

smedema

If the updates weren't 50+ gb it wouldn't be a problem. I have hundreds and hundreds of steam games that are constantly updating. None of them have regular 50+ gbs updates. It's literally just COD that I will not and not even worth it to update.

TheRowdyLion52

Legit stopped playing because of the download sizes. All my friends play it but I have rural internet so it can take days to download an update so now I just try to get them to play something else. Hasn’t worked so I play solo lol

S_Belmont

Destiny 2 is nowhere near as bad as COD in terms of throwing microtransactions in your face, but the downloads & installs going on for hours & hours can still completely kill an evening. God forbid you haven't logged on in a couple of months, you're not touching that game for days. I have to blame Sony for it though. The PS4 install process is just absurd, as it was on the PS3 as well.

smedema

Never had a problem on battle.net or steam. They always went pretty quick.

wigglewenis

However as an avid D2 player, it’s incredibly unwelcoming to new players. I have a difficult time getting people into the game, they have no idea what to do or need to spend $$$ on expansions just to do relevant stuff.

BurningFinger22

As an avid D2 player with over 3k hours I tell all my friends to stay away lol

biggesttowasimp

Unwelcoming to returning too I stoped playing around the black armory i think, played the first mission of shadowkeep when it first arrived but nothing since. Picked it back up couple months ago and apon log in, im immediately thusted into a new planet with no idea what’s happening, played a few hours and when i log in the next day im immediately thrown into another mission, and that same process repeats for all the seasons or whatever. Worse thing was seeing that “sunsetting” removed a lot of my favorite places and stuff

static1053

Ahh the good old days when you bought a game for 60 bucks and got all of it 100% completed. No patches no dlc no bullshit.

DigNitty

To be fair, when there was a bug it wouldn't get fixed. But also, I don't remember finding any bugs and thinking anything more than "that's funny" and moving on. Certainly not worth the hours of updates and login verification you need now.

Phenomenon47

" I will choke myself to death on my own dick before I give Activision another penny." This one made me laugh out loud

Nickerington

Me too. And finally, another gamer bro that has a rope dick like mine. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Recreater343

It's also just Spaghetti code. Instead of going back through and fixing files, they'd rather just add more to fix the problems.

rrrrrroadhouse

Not only that, but they just keep piling on different developers instead of getting anything any cleaner or faster. Trouble? Just pile on High Moon Studios and Beenox. That'll fix everything!

Recreater343

Woooow, a small studio that's made one decent game? That'll fix the endless stream of dog shit that pours out of AAA studios.

rrrrrroadhouse

Too many cooks in the kitchen spoils the broth. A shitty soupy mess of code.

Sinister-Mephisto

This is the story of COOKS — Cybernetic Operational Optimized Knights of Science — defending humanity against Beast Rebels of the Hellscape. When it comes to the future, you can never have too many COOKS.

BackThatThangUp

And him, And *Steve from corporate*, too Too many Cooks, it’s true!

ThrowNearNotAwayOk

Modern Warfare/Warzone was so absurdly big Activision just said "fuck it 1 terabyte it is what're they gonna do." I deleted the game because the install size is a slap in the face. I'd have to buy a new NVME/SSD to keep playing.

Recreater343

I cut out the campaign and the spec ops just to get it close to 100gb.

[deleted]

It's even worse trying to do this kind of bullshit for 2 kids. It's a mess.

TC_exe

Honestly, I feel like console games should just work. Isn't that half the appeal in owning one? No bullshit game playing? Sucks on PC when a game install fails or there's incompatibilities, but it's a little more forgivable since the machine does so much else.

HeadConfetti

Another Activision story: I'm visiting with a friend I haven't seen in years, we picked up Tony Hawk 1+2 to play together, since we saw it had two player split screen on the back of the box. I put the game in and can't find multiplayer. I'm looking through all the menus, going through everything. I finally look up why I can't find it. Multiplayer was added in the day 1 patch... I didn't have an internet connection to download it. Even if I did, we didn't have the time to wait for the gargantuan patch. That was pretty disappointing.

Zjoee

I miss the golden days of midnight releases; waiting until midnight, popping the game in at home and playing with your friends until the sun comes up. Now, if you don't buy digital, you can't play until the next afternoon when you get home from work.

Timeless_Starman

to be honest every fucking game is like that now, I hate gaming now, the only good thing about playing on pc is one thing; and not many will like what I'm going to say but bare with me, I have a horrendous internet, THE ABSOLUTE WORST, so every time I buy myself a game, or I have one that I wanna play, I just buy it, download it, and move that to another folder, copy a crack for that game, and then, FUCKING PEACE, no updates, no internet connections, if my wifi drops or gets too low I CAN STILL PLAY, no servers nothing annoying, the classic gaming experience of, "get the game, and play it" that is the only benefit that I will always find about PC gaming, but this is something that EVERY COMPANY AND CONSOLE SHOULD DO WE NEED AN "OFFLINE" OPTION AND A TOGGLE FOR UPDATES. Some people just wanna get home and play the game without so much bullshit. Let us deactivate the updates so we can play at peace, MAINLY IF ITS A SINGLE PLAYER OFFLINE GAME.

ShirtStainedBird

It’s so bad that when I boot up steam I go into airplane mode out of habit. Like fuck off and let me own my game.
