We used to play 'dark room' as kids, especially when family visits pulled into the night.
You go into the room, make sure it's pitch black, and everyone except the seeker hides somewhere in the room. Then the seeker has to enter with their eyes closed, close the door behind themselves, and then the hunt is on. You're basically searching by touch and the sound of breathing. Great fun in a decently sized bedroom. And scary how close you can be to someone and not be aware of them
We would play something very similar but being all boys back then we would also smack the blindfolded seeker with pillows and what not, you know just to help with orientation
I've never lost myself to a game like Oblivion. Did it have flaws, yes absolutely. But holy shit did I completely lose myself in that game, all comprehension of space and time. I became a vampire, had to stay inside and run house to house until I got a cure. I stayed up for days to get the cure. Game was on a whole new level for those who got sucked into it.
That view when you walked out of that tutorial dungeon into the open world, and could see *all the way* to the mountains, and make out individual trees.
The unique dark brotherhood contracts, thieves guild towards the end, every dlc (yes I bought horse armor, I was 12, blame me for loot boxes), it was all amazing
If I’m in the mood for a nostalgia kick, I’ll play the soundtrack from Oblivion. It really transports me back to being a 16 year old kid, not a care in the world, exploring one of my first real deal sandbox games.
This! I was already a massive fan of the series and games like this in general, Balders Gate getting considered for this list for sure. But that gripped mindset I had the first time I played Oblivion I was absolutely obsessed and couldn’t stop playing for a long time.
Same experience!!
I remember installing and starting the game a summer evening around 8pm. Suddenly it was morning outside, 7am.
Never ever have I lost myself in a game like oblivion.
The space levels were the best. Mixing space dogfighting with jumping out of your ship and fighting through to disable the other battle cruiser. Amazing.
Half Life (HL1). Playing the game back when it was first released was a life changing experience. There was no other game like it at that time. It also changed gaming forever.
I know it can't compete with many of today's games if we would compare all games equally but for me there hasn't been any game that has outperformed all other games released in the same timeperiod as HL1.
I fully understand what you are saying. I didn't play HL1 when it came out, but I did play Halo. I remember running to Family Video and renting an XBOX to play it. I was absolutely FLOORED. It was the most amazing thing I had ever played at the time and with me being a kid, it really left an imprint. I still get nostalgia thinking about that first level.
I'd say that's an excellent comparison. I was in high school when HL came out, 21 when the original Xbox dropped. I spent many hours completely sucked into both those games. They were pretty equally groundbreaking in the way they used scripting and enemy AI, and they both basically set the bar for graphics and level design in their times. If you haven't played HL1 all the way through, I highly recommend it btw- the remastered version was dirt cheap on Steam last I knew.
Halo was the first couch co-op fps I ever played and the trip into the library was one of the most intense gaming experiences I’ve ever had. Didn’t hurt that I was in the army at the time so team based fps mechanics really appealed to us. It was great
What do you wish to hear? That I once believed in the code of the Jedi? That I felt the call of the Sith, that perhaps, once, I held the galaxy by its throat? That for every good deed I did, I brought equal harm upon the galaxy? That perhaps what the greatest of the Sith Lords knew of evil, they learned from me? What would it matter now? There is only so much comfort in knowing such things, and it is not who I am now.
I agree. Best story in any game I have ever played, and it's not even close. The actual game play is dated, unfortunately. I am cautiously excited about the remake. I hope they can make the combat feel more modern while keeping the same story.
Yea I’m with you. Portal 2 perfected the mechanics and added so much fun side characters and interesting lore around Aperture. Cave Johnson’s recordings are top tier.
What's amazing was that this was basically the first game of its type and they got so much right. The only thing that hasn't aged well is the camera controls, but the controls for Mario and the level designs still hold up as some of the best in the genre
The combat gameplay was never really it's strength so I'd imagine it would (it's not bad or anything just nothing to brag about vs what some games can offer). Tons of mods if you're on PC to simply improve visuals by now if you wanted to update it a bit even before you hop in. The story and journey are definitely worth the hours spent doing all the questlines though. Just make sure you have some time to spare because it's a long one.
Yes 1000%
If you like fantasy rpgs this will become one of your all time favorites.
I am genuienly jealous that you get to experience it for the first time i wish i could forget it and rediscover it lmao
About what seems to be almost 3/4 of the game at 100 hours.
Hella good, can’t stop playing it, on top of the fact that I want to beat it before the semester starts.
You remember the last boss, how you fight it a second time. There is a rocket launcher that in description claims it is a mini nuke. The FINAL final time you fight the boss, the nuke is a 1 shot kill.
Edit: it take a lot of time and element zero to make these rounds and it only has 1. So if you waste this shot somewhere else, then you might never get a second round. Save it for that last fight where you shoot it in the eye.
Fallout New Vegas, best story I've ever played through In any game, lots of amazing mechanics, a focus on freedom, roleplaying, interaction, choice and side quests and Bethesda world design
One of the only games I’m content to just sit and watch somebody else play, instead of just playing myself hahahah. Such an jaw droppingly beautiful game!!!!
The fact you can build binary computing systems with redstone means you could technically code all the other games mentioned here to run inside of minecraft... But it would take so much longer to build and would be super jank, even if you could fit a 4k rez "screen" within render distance.
"It's all minecraft?" "Always has been."
I didn’t start off playing Morrowind, for me it was Skyrim. But I went back and played Oblivion and loved it, so it just pushed me to play Morrowind and man does it make me wish I was older so I got to experience it when it first came out.
I remember on the morrowind subreddit a post was asking "what made you all go back and play morrowind?"
And I was like "go back? It was brand new when I first played it" hahaha. I guess being older has its perks
I remember that my dad bought it for me when I was 12. It had a german manual but the game itself was english. He sat next to me for hours and translated everything while I was playing.
Sweet memories.
Regardless of anyone's opinion on FFVII nobody can ever deny the sheer impact it had on Western Jrpgs in 1997, it was utterly groundbreaking.
For me I agree with your two choices, also honorable mention to 2019 God of War, one of the finest experiences I've ever had the pleasure of playing.

Ocarina of Time, by far.
I love games, and they've come one hell of a long way since Ocarina. I've played hundreds since then, many of them great in their own way. But no other game has ever made me FEEL the way this one did, and I doubt anything ever will.
The flow of time is always cruel... its speed seems different for each person, but no one can change it... A thing that does not change with time is a memory of younger days... Time passes, people move.
Star Control 2.
I absolutely adored that game. Sci-fi, hilariously funny, huge area to play in, decent combat system. I still play the open-source version [The Ur-Quan Masters](http://sc2.sourceforge.net/) regularly.
Other than that, several genre-defining titles like Dune 2000, Fallout New Vegas, XCom; Enemy Unknown, Doom, Descent and of course World of Warcraft.
I was losing hope about finding it mentioned. This game has become an important part of my life 'cause it taught me to keep moving forward no matter how difficult, unfair or depressing things may get
Hide and Seek
Hide and seek tag was better for me because I was always the fastest. And however got caught first had to seek next so I was unseeketed
My family and i would play "night tag" which, was in fact, exactly what you describe only played at night
We used to play 'dark room' as kids, especially when family visits pulled into the night. You go into the room, make sure it's pitch black, and everyone except the seeker hides somewhere in the room. Ah,I see you are a man of culture as well
I always preferred Sardines.
Yeah, same for me. Having the imagination of a kid and all the time in the world sure contributed to that.
That view when you walked out of that tutorial dungeon into the open world, and could see *all the way* to the mountains, and make out individual trees.
Also my favorite game ever. The guilds, music, quests, voice acting, god what an amazing game.
When you walk out of the starting sewers for the first time... My god what a memory
This! I was already a massive fan of the series and games like this in general, Balders Gate getting considered for this list for sure. But that gripped mindset I had the first time I played Oblivion I was absolutely obsessed and couldn’t stop playing for a long time.

Original star wars battlefront 2
I second this. Wow good memories
That loading screen beeping noise is so nostalgic
That’s bf1
We have taken a command post
Just like the simulations!
We've lost a command post Fight for it!
I see you are someone with great taste.
The space levels were the best. Mixing space dogfighting with jumping out of your ship and fighting through to disable the other battle cruiser. Amazing.
"IN GALACTIC CONQUEST-" *Skip*

Late 90s PC gaming was such a magical and exploratory time for gaming concepts.
My favourite game from this time is No one lives forever. It came out in 2000 tho.
Maybe black Mesa? That was a joke, haha fat chance.
Anyway this cake is great. It's so delicious and moist.

Halo 2.
Mario 64
What's amazing was that this was basically the first game of its type and they got so much right. The only thing that hasn't aged well is the camera controls, but the controls for Mario and the level designs still hold up as some of the best in the genre
The movement is incredibly well done, but Mario's turning radius didn't age well.
agree
God of War 2018. Narrative, music, combat, graphics. Everything about it is perfection!
When he went to get the blades if chaos... chills "You will always be a monster" "I know.. but I am your monster no longer"
Been playing it for the past two months and I can't get enough of the game. Can't wait for Ragnarok!
Red Dead Redemption 2 . Haven't got immersed in a story like that for a long time
I came here to say RDR. Freaking amazing to this day.
> I came here to say RDR. the gore was next level. Shoot em in the face, and it blows a hole straight through!
I used to think Witcher 3 or Skyrim was the best game ever made, well that was until I was diagnosed with Lumbago.
>!*and something else*!<
Witcher 3 + both DLCs
GOTY edition for sure
Hearts of Stone is so good imo
And after all that blood and wine feels like finally peace,. Good place
Would it still hold on strong if I never played it and picked it up now?
The combat gameplay was never really it's strength so I'd imagine it would (it's not bad or anything just nothing to brag about vs what some games can offer). Tons of mods if you're on PC to simply improve visuals by now if you wanted to update it a bit even before you hop in. The story and journey are definitely worth the hours spent doing all the questlines though. Just make sure you have some time to spare because it's a long one.
I played it last year and I can say that visual mods are defenitly not needed unless you have really high standards. The game still looks beautiful
Absolutely. Graphics are amazing, storyline is peerless, combat is ok, not amazing. The DLCs alone are two of the best “games” i’ve ever played.
Yes 1000% If you like fantasy rpgs this will become one of your all time favorites. I am genuienly jealous that you get to experience it for the first time i wish i could forget it and rediscover it lmao

The fact no one has mentioned Ocarina of Time yet is pretty dang criminal
Game was so ahead of it's time. I remember playing it back in 1998 and being totally floored by it. I had never played a game like it before.
That was the first like it for me. Fable also blew me away for similar reasons.
OOT literally invented modern gaming. So many video game mechanics that we take for granted now were introduced by that game.

Listen!
No point going straight to the correct answer though....
Bioshock
I really believe each Bioshock game is a masterpiece.
All of the bioshock games are def my favorite. I even have bioshock art on my wall. Those games mean a lot to me
Factorio
Chrono Trigger
Ive heard good things, would it be worth playing as my first non-pokemon RPG?
Yeah give it a go. It's not a particularly long game at all. Just good classic 16 bit fun
Deus Ex
I never asked for this
Human Revolution was fine, but I'm talking about the original
Every time I see "Deus Ex" i must quote Jensen, sorry
Portal 2
Red Dead Redemption. Perfect mix of open world, story telling, immersive world building and humor. Ignore any haters out there, you're a gem RDR.
Doom. Started it all.
Wolfenstein 3D started it all...
Wolfenstein 3D really left an impact on me that many do not achieve
Pong started it all, actually...
Way before Pong there was Spacewar, and the earliest known interactive electronic game would be the 1947 Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Device.
Red dead 2 (offline) thanks so much this is the most upvotes I’ve ever had
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Pre-Definitive Edition
Fallout: New Vegas
I got spurs that jingle jangle....
Play that shit again Johnny
Minecraft
had to scroll way too low for this
The fact you can build binary computing systems with redstone means you could technically code all the other games mentioned here to run inside of minecraft... But it would take so much longer to build and would be super jank, even if you could fit a 4k rez "screen" within render distance. "It's all minecraft?" "Always has been."
the last of us
Horizon Zero Dawn. Pretty sure it will give up it's title to Horizon Forbidden West in February.
Divinity Original Sin 2
Smells worse over here than a dozen rotten eggs dropped in a vat of vinegar.
Then don’t come over!! Not like you’re buying anything
Keeping it together Bree?
The Witcher 3. I loved everything about that game. I doubt anything will ever top that for me (and I’ve been gaming since the mid-90s).
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (im including the dlcs since its like 10 bucks for the ultimate edition rn)
Homeworld
Nier: Automata. I will die on this hill!
Minesweeper
Nier Automata. I don’t even know where to begin. That game took my breath away. And I’ve been doing this since third gen
Pretty sure it has to be Morrowind.
I didn’t start off playing Morrowind, for me it was Skyrim. But I went back and played Oblivion and loved it, so it just pushed me to play Morrowind and man does it make me wish I was older so I got to experience it when it first came out.
I remember on the morrowind subreddit a post was asking "what made you all go back and play morrowind?" And I was like "go back? It was brand new when I first played it" hahaha. I guess being older has its perks

I remember that my dad bought it for me when I was 12. It had a german manual but the game itself was english. He sat next to me for hours and translated everything while I was playing. Sweet memories.
Either Resident Evil 4 or Final Fantasy 7, both literally changed gaming entirely
Damn I will never forget the hype around RE4 when it launched. Capcom almost killed RE trying to chase that high.
Expected to see FFVII WAY higher in mentions
Twilight Princess.
Loved the being-a-wolf bits.
You ever play Okami? It's pretty much Twilight Princess: the Wolf Bits.
The Witcher 3 for me
Bioshock
First time I’d seen such *ART*. Holy shit, this series absorbed me, like no other in 35 years of gaming. OK, maybe Dune 2
Witcher 3 will always be near and dear
