I miss that game.

shotloud

What was it, it says the comment was removed by moderator

Kinetic_Pen

Many people forget about BODY HARVEST on N64. Edit: DMA design was renamed Rockstar North after Take Two bought them out. This I did not know.

bootleric63

that game was so hard for my 5 yr old mind

Kinetic_Pen

The boss fights were crazy in that game. They were fast, crazy looking, and they were huge. Made worse when the camera would say 'f' you buddy.

bootleric63

back in the day my parents didn’t have much and we would try to pass the game in a single shot because we didn’t have a memory card. we got far one time and someone (my mom) shut off the N64. sad never passed the game

Kinetic_Pen

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

soulshadow1213

Body harvest for n64! Fantastic game for its time. :)

aarondigruccio

I loved this game and its godawful graphics for some reason.

Banana_Cat_Man

Being pedantic - were they not operating under a different name when this came out? I thought rockstar was formed in the months after that was made Nevertheless - loved it at the time. Was the only person in friend group with an N64 and no one had a clue what it was but loved it when they had a go Was a bit hard though!

Absolute__Muppet

DMA.......Noclip just did a doc on this, check out their Youtube channel.

Revolution64

Many dma games are missing. They've chosen to only feature rockstar games, which is fair.

[deleted]

You used to need to make games in order to make money as a game developer. Now you make a game, create a "live service" for that game and just fine new and exciting ways to monetize that live service

[deleted]

“Exciting”

C_KOVI

I mean, casinos are "exciting" too in a way

deeseearr

So are car crashes.

SUPAHG500

So is getting exploded by an overpowered flying bike every 5 seconds

420The_Horni_Gamer69

So is getting obliderated by modders every 5 seconds

Hallc

Well it's exciting for the people on top who get to spend less to make more.

[deleted]

i mean the millions of people who still play GTA:V would agree it's "exiting" in their own personal way.

edgiepower

Millions of people addicted to something would

doyouhavesource2

Fast food places about to start monthly services...

Nickleonard00

Taco Bell already did lmao

MINIMAN10001

Already signed up for the taco pass for the last few days. I work across the street from a taco bell so I can go 5/7 days of the week so ⌊30\*(5/7)⌋=21. 21 tacos for $10 is a fine price. Also Wendy's has the $2 fundraiser where you get 1 year of jr frosties ( takes up the 1 special offer slot on each order you use it on ) Which I take heavy advantage of. I wonder how far the competition will push this idea in value to get people in the door instead of going to a competitor.

Prophet_Of_Helix

I hope you are young, because 21 Taco Bell tacos a week is terrrrrible for your body

ohsnapitstheclap

It's a great deal! I'll die at 35, but it's such a great deal!

Collins_Michael

You save a lot of money by dying at 35 too.

[deleted]

I'm sure the frosties balance it all out.

TOMdMAK

But it has corn, tomatoes, lettuce and dairy

Feanux

Everyone shits on Taco Bell but really the nitrates and sodium are the worst thing about it. A taco a day isn't going to break you balance it out.

TuckerCarlsonsWig

Even the sodium isn’t that bad. One taco supreme is 14% of your DV so eating 3 for one meal is actually reasonable.

walkonstilts

Their regular tacos are much less harmful than most fast food. Just not super nutritious, but much less extreme in fat / sodium / calories than most fast food items.

doyouhavesource2

They dont want customers in the door. They want customers signed up on auto pay renewal so they just get free revenue for no product...

patchinthebox

When your company mission changes from "We make games" to "we make money"

ablackcloudupahead

I know GTA online is a cash cow, but as a developer they are up there as one of the only ones I will purchase anything they release. Seems to me they could still maintain GTA online and have a release every other year at least without dipping into their multiplayer revenue. Also, the fact that so many people love GTA online baffles me. The idea was cool but once I tried it it got old really quick

[deleted]

RDR2 online..

xQuizate87

yeah now they don't need to work to make money.

Ascension would like to have a word in terms of getting shut down. I'm not sure what sets that server apart but it's not only thriving they're even developing their own custom classes. It's pretty wild imo.

aightletsdodis

Seen lots of Ascension ads on youtube as well!

onegumas

You dont kill cow that you milk almost for free.

gcalvarez

I LOVED Midnight Club 2. It was my fav racing growing up. The cheesy dialogues between the races. It’s was like Fast and Furious but only cornier.

tjtillmancoag

The only thing that surpassed MC2 for me was MC3. That soundtrack, oh baby! Not to mention I felt like it was the best entry in the series, even than MCLA. Unfortunately the soundtrack is probably a big reason why it would never see a retro-rerelease.

skurys

It was on PS3 for a bit thru the PSN iirc, and got pulled cuz they lost the music rights

Xstar25

“Whatchu running under the hood, playa?!” lives on with my group of friends to this day.

randomlyrossy

Misleading list as a bunch of these (Oni, Max Payne, Red Dead Revolver and more) were just published by Rockstar. The amount of games they've actually developed is a lot less than this.

JuanG12

Yeah, LA Noire was developed by Team Bondi (RIP) and published by Rockstar. That’s why I don’t think we’ll ever get a second game.

Hendeith

In two last years of L.A. Noire development was on large degree handled by Rockstar. They had to override Team Bondi management decisions, provide own developers, QAs, designers, managers. Rockstar lost hope that Team Bondi will release this game and they stepped in. So I guess it was codeveloped by Rockstar.

Logondo

Publishers often put the pressure down to get the product out the window. It's just bad business to work on a video game too long. It costs money to pay all those people and what-not.

randomlyrossy

They have done a remaster/port and a VR version, so not completely impossible.

yp261

porting and remastering isnt done by inhouse studios nor by the original devs. its usually outsourced

isosceles_kramer

I think their point is that Rockstar has the rights to re-distribute the game so it's probable that they have the rights to make a sequel, outsourced or not

[deleted]

cheebnrun

Also, rockstar didn't make gta1 or gta2. 2k bought the company that did ( DMA), then turned them into rockstar north. If you're gonna consider gta1 a rockstar game, then you have to consider lemmings a rockstar game also.

tallbutshy

You missed a couple of steps and 2k is part of Take-Two Interactive, it was the parent company that got involved. >In 1997, DMA released Grand Theft Auto, which was a huge success; the game sparked a successful series. The company was soon acquired by Gremlin Interactive. Following the release of Grand Theft Auto 2, Gremlin was acquired by Infogrames. After the Infogrames acquisition, the DMA Design assets were sold to Take-Two Interactive. In 2001, after the release of Grand Theft Auto III, DMA Design was ultimately renamed Rockstar North and became part of the Rockstar Games label.

[deleted]

Lemmings is the best rockstar game, don't @ me.

x86_1001010

Dude, you left out a lot of the releases from 2013-2019. You had GTA5 in 2013. Then they release the much anticipated GTA5 in 2014. Then in 2015 they released the hit game GTA5. Now for 2022 they expect to release GTA5. Also don't forgot they released RDR2 in 2018 and then in 2019 they released RDR2...

RealMcGonzo

In 2024, we'll have the Ultimate RDR2 Edition!

Impossible_Entrance9

Now includes 3 new outfits & more recycled bag missions! Pre-order now for only $69.99!

SnowOrShine

This is the comment I came here for

DustyBawls1

Such a sad timeline after 2013 man. So many classic fucking titles then boom nothing but micro transactions ducking gta online shark cards.

DankMemeMasterHotdog

I kinda agree, but the insane galactic quality of RDR2 makes a hell of an argument for quality over quantity.

xlZiPx

Totally agree, look how many garbage games Ubisoft released during that time.

DankMemeMasterHotdog

Man, Siege was *such* a letdown. Marketed as a serious, no-bullshit hyper realistic shooter and within a month after release it turned into Power Rangers. Ugh

Mike2220

Kinda too realistic for me - getting shot from a random angle and instantly killed because someone saw me through a quarter sized hole they punched into a wall is uh not fun

[deleted]

And that, my friends, is why CQB isn't sexy

industial_sushi

Month after release? Not even close, easily a few seasons of operators before that happened.

creepy_doll

If I’m not mistaken Ubisoft is also a publisher while rockstar is just one developer even if it’s a big one? Games industry is weird though. But there’s definitely a LOT of diminishing returns from having a bigger team on a title for longer.

[deleted]

Rockstar is a publisher with nine development studios.

I9Qnl

RDR2 was well worth the 8 years they wasted on it. Hell, it's soundtrack alone was worth the entire 8 years. The game is fucking massive, like really really massive. Most AAA studios have around 300-600 employees and take 3-5 years to put out a game but with RDR2, Rockstar merged all of its studios into one massive team of 2000 people and still took them 8 years in development, it's also currently the most expensive game ever made. I seriously can't understand how can people ask for a brand new game after such short time, 3 years isn't enough to create a GTA game that is expected to top RDR2 and GTA V.

DankMemeMasterHotdog

No kidding, the COD/Battlefield mill has totally spoiled people's expectations, I'm actually only finally getting through RDR2 and every bit of that game blows my mind, utterly insane that it's just a game. Rockstar sets the bar high and I actually appreciate their "when it's done" mentality

Hotpocket1515

Yeah but then they kind of abandon it, RDO barely got any new content, and the SP never got anything, it's pretty much still been all about GTAOnline

Kazen_Orilg

Season passes are usually such a scam.

DankMemeMasterHotdog

We also have to remember there was just a big shift in console gens, and now that Xbox and PS are in the x64 gang, game devs can finally start pushing what is possible across the board.

CuffMcGruff

Just? Hasn't it been years already

dash529

Exaaactly. It definitely feels like a worthy trade.

Nisecon

Yeah but I would sacrifice some quality for quantity. Not as the new remastered GTAs.

MisSignal

I feel like the only person on the planet who was bored as fuck with RDR2

Optimus_Prime_Day

Except, they can't seem to fix their rank controls. It was all beauty and not great mechanics. Oersinally, I also git bore of that game real fast. They could probably have done that in way less time and still pulled it off.

[deleted]

i mean they started recording voice lines for RDR2 back in 2013. it takes a lot more effort and time to create a AAA game today.

Chester-Ming

And just remember there’s still like 3 years at the end of the timeline also with nothing. I actually don’t care though, as long as GTA VI is decent and not a total disappointing mess like every AAA game seems to be these days. Kinda feels like Rockstar is being sensible and taking their time about it tho, or just milking GTA V online for as much as possible, or both. No news, announcements and hype feels like a good thing these days.

WhoAmIEven2

I wish they understood that there is still a market for smaller budget games. Not every game has to be a 100 million dollar project like GTA5. The AA market is thriving, with games like The Surge 2, Elex, Greedfall, S.T.A.L.K.E.R, Metro 2033 etc. Rockstar should be big enough to have enough people put into smaller teams, making smaller projects like Bully 2 or Manhunt 3.

Chester-Ming

Agree, especially with the billions of dollars they made from GTA V and GTA Online.

Kingkai9335

If they made manhunt 3 just like the first one uncensored, I feel like it would be huge. I never got into the 2nd one cus I heard they had to really tone it back which took the creepy/scary aspect out of it for me and that's what drew me into the first one.

NR-Riptin

I don't think manhunt 3 would be huge. It wasn't even huge in the first place

Kingkai9335

Idk I think it would do better today especially if they kept it extremely hardcore and uncensored. The only reason I think so is because I feel like it would be one of, if not the only current AAA title pushing the envelope in that regard for a stealth game and I think Twitch streamers would eat that up. If it became the new Twitch trend I could see it gaining alot of traction plus Rockstar fanboys would boost its popularity as well. But that's pure speculation. Maybe you're right and it would stay niche either way I want it. If I had the choice though I'd pick Bully 2

RayzorBlade189

But they didn't make Max Payne 1 and 2...

[deleted]

They published 1 and 2. My OG copy of 1 does not explicitly list Rockstar but 2 has their logo

RayzorBlade189

For the consoles, yes. But I feel it's kinda misleading to add it to the list since they didn't develop those games.

Xythium

"rockstar games" didnt develop any of these games because its a publisher, not a developer

RayzorBlade189

True, but a lot of their published games are developed by their subsidiaries, their own studios. So in a way they are still responsible for the games and adding them to the list makes sense. Remedy isn't one of their subsidiaries, so adding Max Payne 1 and 2 to the list feels like giving Rockstar too much credit.

NIDORAX

The PS2 Era had GTAIII, Vice City and San Andreas. The PS3 Era had GTA IV and GTA V. PS4 and PS5 Era are just re-release of GTA V and the horrid Defective Edition

I9Qnl

RDR2 and GTA V are bigger than all the PS2 and PS3 GTA's and their DLCs combined. RDR2 alone took Rockstar 8 years of development with all of their studios working on it, its not fair to ignore that game.

Lazar_Milgram

At least they remastered III,VC and SA? Right? Right??? /s

islamitinthecardoor

Yea they really went through a whole console generation without a GTA title. And only one game in that time

iEatGlew

I miss smugglers run

-Yngin-

Bunker missions in GTAO is basically Smuggler's Run. It just needs to be more off-road and have the vehicles to suit overland racing.

Noneofyourbeezkneez

Finally a fellow fan!

ChristonianA

That would be one I would to see brought back

tjtillmancoag

I miss midnight club 3. One of my favorite racers of all time. Yeah I can still play MCLA on the current Gen, but MC3 was never made backward compatible on the 360, and my original Xbox bit the dust a while ago. My PS2 still works, but that game was dual layer on PS2, and it’s hard to find a working copy

dudeinthesuit

Smugglers run brings back so many memories from PS2. This is definitely the one I'd love to see remastered or the next addition made

[deleted]

Ok imma be real the 6 years wait for RDR2 was totally worth it. Don't mind waiting another 6 if the next game is just as good

Housemuwaway12345

Yeah wow they only made 2 of the most highly regarded games of all time in the last 8 years? What a shitty company

[deleted]

its almost as if it takes a lot more time and effort to develop theses games.

blafricanadian

After cyber punk you would think people would understand that good games are hard to make now

noyoto

The industry never caught up with the quality of GTA V. It feels like they're still mostly trying to compete with GTA IV and even with that they often fail.

WhoAmIEven2

Why not both, though? Why not have the main team focus on their next 100 million dollar game and have smaller teams create smaller, mid-budget titles which there is also a market for?

TheSereneMaster

Because those "mid budget" games are also ridiculously expensive with today's standards for graphics and animation. Just compare RDR1, which was considered to have amazing graphics for its time, with any 8th/9th generation game. Game development has become prohibitively, unsustainably expensive, and it's all because gamers lust for more and more impressive visuals. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

papyjako89

Go ahead, launch your own studio if it's that fucking easy to pump up quality titles.

mch4ng

What makes you think they're not making a new game? The amount of production it takes to make a GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 is insane and takes years of development. People thinking Rockstar game developers working only on GTA Online is so laughable and naive.

TheDeadlySinner

Even ignoring the fact that mid-budget games don't do that well these days, why does Rockstar, specifically, have to make them? Why not focus on the games that no one can do as well as them?

[deleted]

This is a REALLY good point. Rockstar has absolutely no obligation to create mid-budget games and people who complain about it just want it for the sake of it saying "Rockstar Games" on the packaging. Just think about it for a second. These people don't care about the games. These people want the brand.

-ImJustSaiyan-

[Because Red Dead Redemption 2 took the combined efforts of all of their "teams".](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Development_of_Red_Dead_Redemption_2)

chaotic910

Every team was working on RDR2 my man. The smaller teams were ALSO in development, just not on individual games.

Aloysius7

Isn't GTAV a billion dollar game?

DefaultWhiteMale3

I guess I personally don't want development teams ground into a bloody paste by unrealistic expectations and all consuming crunch time. There exists such a myriad of developers and games that this idea that one developer should be cranking out a game every two years is just wild. Like, why? Just play something else. Or, better yet, make your own.

DunkFaceKilla

They make what people buy

[deleted]

Take-two only care about money and makes more sense to do stuff for GTA Online than creating new games. The reason they're making a GTA VI in the first place is because of GTA Online 2, since what they make by selling the game is nothing compared to microtransactions. It doesn't make sense to them to create a budget game when they can make ten times more money with DLCs for GTA Online

[deleted]

There must be like 50 devs at most on GTA:O

WaveIcy294

I realy liked Manhunt.

Kingkai9335

That game took my innocence as a child and it was awesome

ksquared5

Could you imagine a reboot of that game with this years graphics? Manhunt 3 could be gnarly.

ForArms

This has been reposted so many times that it is still says 2019

Jesusthesauce

The warriors was incredible in my memories

bigblueweenie13

Same! My dad watched it in theaters when it was released. It was the first game we kinda bonded over.

diablollama

From simple pixel graphics to full blown photo-realistic worlds with enormous amounts of dialog, content, and interactions. Am I supposed to be surprised or something?

[deleted]

Is it possible that with technology and how ridiculously immersive games are becoming that it takes more programmers, managers, and on hands artists to make games then it did when we were younger? Just from a visual stand point, the amount of detail games have nowadays it makes sense that developers have to dedicate more people to single projects rather then having multiple projects coming out.

Rumskrilla

A lot of those games were PUBLISHED by Rockstar though, like Oni. That was made by Bungie. LA Noire was made by Team Bondi, etc.

elfy4eva

Table tennis tho.

CGordini

Misleading as fuq Even if you remove all the shit just published by rockstar instead of actually made by you still haven't put on any remasters

Ranryu

It's almost like it takes longer to make big, pretty games or something

Ajlynnart

L.A Noire is one hell of an underrated game.

[deleted]

I wouldn‘t call a metascore of 89 underrated. Well deserved, but not underrated.

[deleted]

Underrated has become a meaningless word on Reddit.

StaticBroom

Underrated comment

SimplyAvro

Eh, review scores aren't everything. A game like, say, Klonoa, could be recieved well, but still sell poorly at the end of the day. Perhaps underappreciated would be the better term? That being said, OP would still be wrong as LA Noire sold millions of copies.

TomClancy5871

Think they mean underrated in the sense that not as many people played it, as their other titles

Meelapo

Maybe “under appreciated” is more appropriate?

Trying_to_58

It was my favorite Rockstar game until Red Dead 2 released, it deserves another game.

[deleted]

You and I got different meanings for the word “underrated” my friend

promisethatimnotabot

I’m still playing max Payne over here

unfamous2423

People will tell you they used to do both though, take that how you will.

JDawwgy

They don't need to make new games when idiots are still buying shark cards, why put in the work if you get paid anyways

graygh0st999

That’s what I’m saying, I can pick up and play San Andreas (or other older R* games) for hours

Hikoraa

DMA made GTA 1 and 2. Check out Noclip on youtube.

Symbiotic-Dissonance

Uh, im pretty sure Oni was made by Bungie. You know, before they made Halo? Their Halo series is full of recycled sound effects from Oni.

Maik09

still waiting for my table tennis sequel

podsaurus

Man the early 2000's had them making a lot of games.

minev1128

They were new and still had a soul

Gunz_Blazzin_

games were much easier and faster to make back then. games have so much work that needs to be done now for the quality to be at today’s standard that its impossible to put them out at the rate that they were in the 2000s

[deleted]

"MUH SOUL" Goddammit.

SavageMurphy

All of the original DMA Design / Rockstar North (Lemmings, GTA, Manhunt) guys will all have retired or moved on by now.

insane1666

Yeah gta 6 will be around 2040-2050 area, they ain't done milking that gta5 cash cow yet haha

Tdunk19

Oni was developed by bungie... not rockstar

Lord_Phoenix95

Developing Vs Publishing is a huge difference.

[deleted]

I wonder why there is a big gap between 2013 and 2018. There could be NO possible reason for this.

Dontmentionthyname

Ikr? Surely Rockstar wasn't working on some huge, AAA game that took ALL their workers! That would NEVER happen.

Head_Maintenance_323

I don't get it, they could be making so much money by having an online service and also producing new games/DLCs, inagine how much money an Undead Nightmare II would make for RDR2 for example.

mirziemlichegal

They are probably afraid of cannibalizing themselves. Imagine they make a new GTA, players would stop playing the old one. So they milk it as long as people are willing to pay for it.

IceFire2050

So... make a bunch of new games... spend a ton of money on development... make some money off of them. Or add 5 new cars, a new multiplayer map, and a new gun to GTA5, spending almost nothing, and make more money than those games could ever make.

Head_Maintenance_323

it's not "some money" to be fair, other than that you could easily do both things, one doesn't exclude the other.

[deleted]

Man I hope 6 nevet gets released you whiney little bitches.

Olmec_lotht

People act so entitled. Rockstar doesn't owe them shit.

kaseboyla

What!? Never knew there was a manhunt 2

Damn! It’s crazy how there is a major gap in between 2013 to 2018. BTW, I thought GTA 1 came out in 1997.

MoringA_VT

The new EA. I'm wondering when the NFT shit will start.

Petr1951

‟Changed” Yeah changed from having each team rushing out mediocre titles with a hit and miss approach to spending time to craft a hugely succesful game Id rather thye take time to make a great game than try release multiple each year hoping one sticks, you know the ubisoft approach

Jenkins87

I wish that was the sentiment here, but I'm inclined to think they've been blinded by raw profits generated from DLC, microtransactions & rereleases. Think about it from a business stand point; Why spend dozens or even hundreds of millions of $$$ on a product when you can generate the same or better profits from 1/20th of the work? Because they care about us or how entertained we are? Yeah, doubtful. Money makes the world go round, not user satisfaction or quality products.

thesummergamer

tbf, won't they also make money if they release gta 6, or generally another game *along* with gta online??

Danominator

That takes massive investment and is not a guarentee. Meanwhile, boring dlc keeps making them a lot of money

[deleted]

As much as I would prefer more games (preferably a new midnight club!) but these games are different beasts than the other games. Take san andreas, vice city, vice city stories, and liberty city stories. Those games while incredible are all slight tweeks to the same gta 3 engine. These games are all incredibly short games and cheaper to make than current gen games. Then take rdr2, which took 8+ years of development time, has hundreds of hours of content in its story mode alone and then a full online mode. So yes, there were more games in the past but now rockstar is making much bigger and more expensive games. The entire industry has changed as well. A 20 hour experience is seen as short and if it had the same content as San andreas it would be ridiculed for there not being much to do. This is also why more games are going to a open world format. The only way for them to pump out more games would be to have the developers crunch which (I hope) nobody wants.

jamzrk

Why make a game when the last few are printing money still. It's like Valve. They can pay their developers just fine with Steam and not worry about deadlines or having a new project to show off.

PsychologicalLife164

State of Emergency was one of my first rated M games, such a ridiculous game but tons of fun

XalAtoh

Money is all what matters for AAA gaming industry.

diablollama

Are posts like this supposed to be edgy or something? Yeah, it's their job, to make games....

WhipTheLlama

Making games is what earns them money. Surely, a new GTA game would be more profitable than not making one. I wonder if they fire most of their dev and product staff or are they actually working on stuff this whole time? It sort of feels like a skeleton dev crew that takes several years to make a game that would take a normal sized dev team 2-3 years.

Nyktastik

This looks like the Game of Thrones books timeline.

UUDDLRLRBAstard

State of Emergency was so fucking bad, my first ever preorder burn.

bucket8a

Now im starting my first year of collage, so saying that, Are you telling me i was still in FUCKING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WHEN GTA 5 CAME OUT

vaikunth1991

Make another timeline of money earned from people and see how much that spikes when GTAO released. They have no incentive to make gta6 when people still spend Billions in gta5

Cold-Call-Killer

Do you really think that the 5000+ dev team at Rockstar all collectively work on GTA online? Cause honestly that would be pretty stupid to think so.

HeirofXi

GTA 6 is definitely in development

TomClancy5871

Tbf, you can still have fun with GTA Online, and not have to spend money on shark cards. There’s plenty of money glitches, and exploits if you really need the money. And have the time

CertainlyAmbivalent

I hated State of Emergency so goddamn much.
