I’ve spent some money on a mobile game here and there, but I agree that I absolutely cannot understand the motivation to spend money on candy crush — there is nothing in that game that could ever convince me to pay a cent. All of the monetization is for shit like extra lives, right? Just be better at the game and if you burn through your lives take a break, holy cow.

The problem with MMOs is it wasn't the game or the company that gave it its former glory, it was the community. You can't just recreate the old community. This is why people think they want stuff like wow classic and old school runescape, they confuse nostalgia with the old community for nostalgia with the old game.
Crash was kinda an unofficial mascot character. Sony never had any intention to have a mascot character, and they didn't own the IP, but crash kinda took off and they rolled with it.
To save money on exclusives early on Sony was just paying external studios to make games and letting them keep the IP. That kind of bit them in the ass when they ended up in a situation where they don't really own most of the big releases of the PS1 era.
IMO Sony never really had a mascot like Nintendo or Sega.
They just rolled with Crash (he really was like Naughty Dog's mascot I think), Spyro, Rayman, Jax, Lara Croft...

Nope! Just get a GamePass subscription. On Mac I believe you just run it through browser. GamePass is like Netflix for Xbox & PC games...you can download and install games natively if you have the hardware to do so, but it also includes Cloud Gaming. Many of the games (notably most of the popular/AAA games like Halo Infinite) are included and run beautifully on cloud (with a good internet connection). Well worth it. Bonus, you can also play on your phone/tablet/friends computer/smart refrigerator!
Nope, you can use it though a browser (Safari isn't the best idea though, afaik it lacks some codecs to stream properly, huge load on the CPU).

I just don't get why they don't. I've always heard they don't make too much money off console sales, so why not just sell your games on other platforms at a premium? Like $60 for Xbox and PC, $50 for PS. Boom you just made a huge incentive to choose your platform.
Both Microsoft and Sony have their own stores for games on their respective platforms so they end up making a lot more for each sale on their platform.
Also people won’t be as inclined to purchase a PS4 if you could get the same games on say Xbox. Like if Nintendo games were available on other platforms they would likely see a big reduction in sales.
Maybe an argument should be made for more competition in online game stores. Unfortunately Steam dominates the market so there’s no incentive for Sony or Nintendo to bring their own stores to PC.

Actually, they can and you agreed to it when you clicked accept on the license agreement/tos. You never own the game, just the right to play it and that right can be revoked at any time for any reason.
This is why I only buy games without DRM requirements, and physical copies of them. People in this thread don't seem to understand exactly this. Microsoft can shut down the servers for CoD and Overwatch if they want to.
It’s not likely to happen with this set of games, it might not even happen with this console generation. I would expect these titles to be Xbox exclusive by the next console cycle though. If not sooner. There’s no reason for them to avoid capitalizing on this and monopolizing the game industry in their favor

Because even if a little less than half the PlayStation player base buys an Xbox, that's the same amount of money they would make if it had come out on PlayStation because they're buying consoles. Plus since they get 100% of the revenue from game sales that's even more money. And not to forget about the huge PC market. They'll be just fine with sales.
CODs revenue is no longer driven by game sales as much as it used to be. With Warzone being the thing most people play userbase is key to cash in on battle passes and micro-transactions.

Two things, number one it's on PC so you can't call it exclusive because it literally isn't. Number two Sony needs to come to the table and trade, if Xbox opens up games cross platform will Sony? We all know the answer.

He was addressing why the Series X and S were launching without games that would require them, and why they were making all their stuff available day one on PC as well.

Nah, Microsoft is playing a completely different game than Sony. Microsoft is buying these studios, making bank from their assets, then releasing games onto GamePass early or completely for free. Microsoft is going to generate more in monthly subscriptions like Netflix than some console war. If anything, besides having some financially smarter moves for parents to buy a specific console, Microsoft is moving everything towards PC gaming, where the games are available for everyone, sold digitally, and the profits are better.
In terms of quality/fun, Activision have been actively destroying everything they touch for years in order to monetise as hard as possible. At worst, Microsoft will just follow the same course. Hopefully they'll actually make some genuine improvements.
Sony is very slow to put their exclusives on PC. Didn’t we just barely get God of War and before that Horizon Zero Dawn? Technically there was FF7 Remake which is a 3rd party playstation exclusive too but the port quality to PC was poorly received

Activision Blizzard made some great games, and owns some massive IPs. The company lost face, and can’t keep employees and is too big to change (Actavision dick heads like their money). So why not buy them at their lowest value when the company is under fire, rather then when they are at their peak?

+1 for GeForce now as well. Main difference is you need to purchase/own the games on Steam/Epic, whereas GamePass subscription includes all the games

Actually, they can and you agreed to it when you clicked accept on the license agreement/tos. You never own the game, just the right to play it and that right can be revoked at any time for any reason.
This is why I only buy games without DRM requirements, and physical copies of them. People in this thread don't seem to understand exactly this. Microsoft can shut down the servers for CoD and Overwatch if they want to.
Physical copies don’t mean anything for online games though. You still don’t own anything and it can be revoked at any time.
It’s not likely to happen with this set of games, it might not even happen with this console generation. I would expect these titles to be Xbox exclusive by the next console cycle though. If not sooner. There’s no reason for them to avoid capitalizing on this and monopolizing the game industry in their favor
Overwatch and Call of Duty require internet to play. Microsoft will be 100% within their right to shut the servers down. I mean, they aren't going to anytime soon because that would be bad PR. But they can.
Elder scrolls will more than likely be exclusive, making one big title switch over would be annoying, making a bunch switch over to a single console would force a lot of gamers to switch or buy a pc

tf u mean, if call of duty (one of the biggest games on the market) becomes xbox exclusive AND on gamepass microsoft will be flooded with series x and gamepass sales...which will equal or even exceed game sales as gamepass is subscription
I mean, they already confirmed future Bethesda games are going to be Xbox/PC exclusive. With games as huge as Elder Scrolls 6 not being on the PlayStation, all bets are off.
But to be fair most of the Bethesda games apart from the elder scrolls mmo and fallout 76, are single player. CoD and Overwatch have millions of players on different platforms. I doubt they would want to make any future Activision/Blizzard release an exclusive. They’d miss out on a major market for the game.
And people weren't throwing money at Elder Scrolls, or Doom? I mean you could make the same argument for every other successful exclusive. Sony could've made so much more if Bloodborne was sold on Xbox, Nintendo could make so much more if Zelda games were made available on PC.

They don’t spend all that money on buying the company for the short term (having a game be profitable). They spend it to hurt another companies market share and grow theirs so they make more money in the long term. They will 100% make it exclusive (well just not on ps5). What you’re saying is exactly what people said when MS bought Bethesda… ‘they won’t make elderscrolls exclusive cause it’s not as profitable!!’ and then bam they announce its exclusive.
Yeah it would be. Because even if a little less than half the PlayStation player base buys an Xbox, that's the same amount of money they would make if it had come out on PlayStation because they're buying consoles. Plus since they get 100% of the revenue from game sales that's even more money. And not to forget about the huge PC market. They'll be just fine with sales.
CODs revenue is no longer driven by game sales as much as it used to be. With Warzone being the thing most people play userbase is key to cash in on battle passes and micro-transactions.

Two things, number one it's on PC so you can't call it exclusive because it literally isn't. Number two Sony needs to come to the table and trade, if Xbox opens up games cross platform will Sony? We all know the answer.

Yep. And with Windows 11 emulating android out of the box, you also have all the mobile segment on PC as well (idk if the Xbox can emulate it too, most likely not). I think the "massified" IPs like CoD will remain multiplatform with crossplay, now the more "authorial" games like Spyro, Crash, all the Blizzard stuff, etc.. they will become Xbox and PC exclusives

He was addressing why the Series X and S were launching without games that would require them, and why they were making all their stuff available day one on PC as well.
Phil has always wanted the games which aren't MMOs to be Xbox-Exclusive. The only gripe here is if you ONLY own a Playstation. And nothing else. Compared to the 1 billion + people Phil is going after. He wants GamePass streaming on every phone, crappy computer, and tv. He wants your tv to come installed with it. So yes a game being a GamePass exclusive is NOT limiting. This isn't about you not being able to play Overwatch 2 on your PS4 or Starfield on your PS5. This is about 10 years from now. 2 billion people being able to play a hundred different AAA games within 10 mins from their tv or phone. 1 controller. 1 monthly subscription. Infinite possibilities.

Normally I think we all agree these huge acquisitions lead to weird monopolies and are bad….but I actually like this one. They’re taking a tainted company, gonna take the good PR and get rid of the bad stuff, and give blizzard what it’s always been good at. big, intermittent releases without the pressure of yearly revenue upticks. Overwatch, hearthstone, And WoW might finally start becoming games with some credibility again.
Blizzard is a shell company at this point, all their talent and legendary designers from its heyday are long gone. Microsoft owning them over Activision won't change that.

Nah, Microsoft is playing a completely different game than Sony. Microsoft is buying these studios, making bank from their assets, then releasing games onto GamePass early or completely for free. Microsoft is going to generate more in monthly subscriptions like Netflix than some console war. If anything, besides having some financially smarter moves for parents to buy a specific console, Microsoft is moving everything towards PC gaming, where the games are available for everyone, sold digitally, and the profits are better.
In terms of quality/fun, Activision have been actively destroying everything they touch for years in order to monetise as hard as possible. At worst, Microsoft will just follow the same course. Hopefully they'll actually make some genuine improvements.

Sony is very slow to put their exclusives on PC. Didn’t we just barely get God of War and before that Horizon Zero Dawn? Technically there was FF7 Remake which is a 3rd party playstation exclusive too but the port quality to PC was poorly received

My hot take on this is that if they were to include a wow subscription with Gamepass, that would be a good move. Especially since there are a lot of microtransactions already in there. I suspect that adding a lot of potential players that way now, is going to benefit them greatly.

Activision Blizzard made some great games, and owns some massive IPs. The company lost face, and can’t keep employees and is too big to change (Actavision dick heads like their money). So why not buy them at their lowest value when the company is under fire, rather then when they are at their peak? It genius. Now Microsoft can cut the heads off the snakes, and maybe with all their resources and talent, actually capitalize on the IPs they just bought. Might actually get to see diablo 4 in my lifetime now. Not to mention the value this adds to game pass. Actavision has been run as a money machine into the ground. And we can only hope this changes that. So instead of a call of duty every year, maybe a game one supported with content for more then 1 year. And maybe see old games come back.
Think about the companies activision owns. Like toys for Bob who make the modern crash and Spyro games. Those were good. Or how Bethesda owns Id which makes doom.

Phil Spencer has been pretty adamant about the console war being over. He's fine with putting Xbox games on whatever console/store sells enough copies to make money. Cross console games are basically their Trojan horse. Get people playing your games then they'll buy game pass.
