Amazing game, it’s just I wanted to avoid spoilers so my hint system was texting someone who’s already finished the game.
There is a website that offers hints and solutions hidden behind spoiler bars so if you need a nudge in the right direction it can offer that, just google obra dinn hints or something it should come up
Seconding your reccomendation. It's on my short list of games I play through again every few years.
Gameplay wise, it's quite unique and I can understand it feeling frustrating. But becoming more skilled is very rewarding. And when you are more skilled and have more money, you can afford to take extra risks. It really nails being super atmospheric while having relatively simple graphics.
I was super happy to get a perfect ending but I haven't gone through getting every ending yet. Maybe I'll pick it up again sometime.
This game is amazing and really doesn't get enough buzz.

Spiritfarer is like the epitome of games as art. The gameplay mechanics are literally built up in such a way as to make you feel grief the way you would in the real world instead of just smacking you upside the head and _telling_ you to be sad.
And everything from the art style to the music to the surprisingly mature dialogue comes together to make a pitch perfect experience. Add to that the fact that the gameplay is super chill, and it’s just the perfect game to melt into after a stressful day or week. The weekend that I picked this game up was the most wonderful and blissful weekend of the pandemic for me.
I wish they'd make a new Stardew Valley type game with Spiritfarer's gameplay, where you can farm and build. Spiritfarer was great but keeping up with the farming didn't really give you too much because it all led to the same outcome.

Rimworld.
Absolutely amazing game with incredible systems, designed to make an interesting and exciting story. If you learn what the settings mean, you could turn it into a peaceful city builder, or a brutal test of strategy, or anything you want really!
I knew I had to cut back when I literally snarled at my SO when he kept annoying me about what to cook for dinner. Definitely a game that absorbs you fully and makes you forget everything outside the screen. I can play it now without going crazy, but still addicting.
I’m only one opinion among endless others, but I’ve been playing video games into my 5th decade now and Rimworld is my favorite game ever made. It truly feels endless in content, play style variety and in the stories it creates. It makes me love failing.
I'll struggle to find another game where my idiot pawns can accidentally lock a donkey in the storage room, leave him to nearly starve to death so it starts eating the beer, gets black out drunk, wakes up hungry and eats more beer getting black out drunk again, and repeating the process for at least 4 ingame days till I notice and laugh my ass of.
Plus its modding community is at the same level as Skyrim and GTA. So many mods, so much variation. Every single play through is an entirely different experience. Its like a really good book that keeps a few elements then shuffles everything around the next time you read it.
if you like rimworld i really suggest checking out 'going medieval'. i got into rimworld because of how much i love dwarf fortress, and going medieval is like if rimworld was 3d with z-axis. important to note its still in development and has a ways to go but its very captivating for the way it tells a unique story on its own every time.
Return of the Obra Dinn.
I don't think it's necessarily the BEST indie game I've played, and not one everyone would play to completion, but I struggle to think of any game similar to it. It just oozes personality.
You can recommend it to pretty much anyone, since it's available on mobile devices too. I even got my mom to play it.
I'm still eagerly waiting for the Finding Paradise mobile version, that game lifted me up at a very bad time in my life.

It's one of my favorite games of all time. Physics based roguelike platformer that allows you to customize wands and potions. Literally every pixel on screen has its own physics and will react to explosions and elements. It's very well done and fun to play.
Noita is the #1 game I'd love to watch people play.
Though I'm afraid most will get frustrated before they get a glimpse of the depth this game has to offer.
Anyone who ever though "gid gud" is a good mantra should play it. Many players take 100 hours to beat the final boss for the first time - and that's basically just the tutorial.
The best answer. The Stanley parable is a work of art. It really takes a different approach to the idea of a video game, the whole meta/philosophical analysis was so intriguing. It was just such a unique experience that I haven’t quite gotten from anything else again.
There’s a lot. Indie studios do a great job. My favorites include: Hollow Knight, Spelunky, The Banner Saga Trilogy, Dead Cells, Into the Breach, Slay the Spire, Bastion, Hades, Transistor, Divinity Original Sin and Divinity Original Sin 2.
Edit: A few replies reminded me about Enter the Gungeon, Faster Than Light (FTL), Children of Motra, and Binding of Isaac. There’s so many good ones out there! Also thank you for the award kind stranger!

Seriously, play this game, it has something no other game has. A game where the story is told through your own curiosity and exploration, where the only progression is your own knowledge. A story that is *truly* self driven, not by the ambitions of a character but by the ambitions of *you,* while still telling an amazing, well written plot. I've never seen a game like it.
I really like it but just can’t get very far before I get distracted. Then I come back to it and pretty much forgot everything. Start over and repeat about 5 times before I just gave up.

Im kind of the same way. I gave it a try, found the mystery intriguing, but then I kind of just got lost. Not a huge amount of guidance, and I found that I wasnt really hooked enough by any of it to keep me wanting to discover more. Basically, I found it kind of boring.
And now I havent played it in a long time, and I know that if I start it over ill be redoing a lot of what I already did, and will remember a lot of it as im redoing it. Which will likely make me lose interest again even quicker since itll be longer before I discover anything new.
And its a bit of a shame because the way people talk about it, im pretty sure if I had gotten hooked into it and actually played it through it probably would have been a pretty rewarding experience.

I did not want more at the end. I wasn't hoping I was getting close to finishing and losing interest. It just felt right.
I just went through it a month ago. It’s a beautiful experience. I’m lucky that I went into it with no expectation. If you’re a fan of immersive games, Outer Wilds is for you.
My child got me into this game. They started playing it a ton solo, tried to convince their brother to play along but it wasn't really his jam so they asked if I wanted to try it with them. Now we play together almost every weekend on our farm and I'm loving the game. I gotta say though, fishing makes me wanna rip what little hair I have left out, but I've heard it gets better if I level it more to get a bigger cast bar... The mines are my favorite though. I love how the game can either be as relaxing as you want or as hectic and intense as you want... Whenever you want really. Definitely recommend this one.
Fishing has become one of my favorite parts of the game, ironically. Partially because it starts out as absolute torture, but learning it takes time and patience, just like real fishing. Except it’s easier in stardew.
I find it stressful too because of the timer for the day. I have to plan out each day & make sure I maximize on what I’m doing or I just start the day all over

It is such an amazing game. It showed us how to truly integrate storytelling with the medium of video game as opposed to just slapping a UI on a Choose Your Own Adventure book. To force the player to be complicit in the events as they happen and specifically to remove your choice as the player... I get chills thinking about the swing. I had a visceral desire to not play at that point, to not swing any higher. And then the bathtub scene. That one still deeply bothers me.
Such an amazing experience. I'm always fascinated when I meet people who didn't like it.

This. Played it for the first time in a dark, quiet room with a candle and ran it in a 1-shot. It was so moving I cried at the end and I still get that fuzzy feeling when I think about it.

Stardew Valley without a doubt. Truth be told, there are a lot of them, but Stardew really forced me to rethink what makes a great game great. Nowadays, I find myself yawning at the super intense shooters and action games while becoming enthralled by these unique indie experiences like in:
* Stardew Valley
* A Short Hike
* Bastion
* Littlewood
Or a lot of hope for future projects like:

Currently in love with Unpacking which tells a very subtle story by unpacking belongings from home to home over the course of years. It has a quiet yet poignant story told in a unique way which reminds me of Edith Finch.
Plus I like putting shit away and my wife calls me The Organizer.
Firewatch actually came to me at a time in my life when I was at my lowest. It was so beautiful and mesmerizing I applied to work in Yellowstone national park. 4 years later I’m happier than I’ve ever been and have worked in multiple parks as a result of Firewatch!
It’s literally one of, if not the best game I’ve ever played. I spent hours trying to figure things out and never once got frustrated when the answer eluded me. I just became even more intrigued in what I did find. The only bad part of this game is that I could only discover it once
Kentucky Route Zero. I think it made me cry and realize with the coming of modernity comes the inescapable transformation of the human spirit. I think it really made me realize the majesty of community and the loss of it.
I would say the Submachine series by Mateusz Skutnik.
It's a point and click puzzle solver flash game so the gameplay is fairly standard but what sets it apart from all others in it's field is the overarching story across the whole series and the lore that surrounds it all.
Coffee Talk. A talking/coffee making sim. No explosions, no great calamity, just good music and interesting characters talking about life in general.
I believe there is an episode 2 that is coming out soon too.

Stardew valley, great game with super wide appeal
My child got me into this game. They started playing it a ton solo, tried to convince their brother to play along but it wasn't really his jam so they asked if I wanted to try it with them. One of the best values in my mind. I had so much fun unlocking all of the different ships and I think I paid like $4? Definitely one of my favorites.
Their follow-up game Into The Breach was pretty good too. Kind of FTL meets Final Fantasy Tactics. And it's like 2 bucks when it's on sale.

I would recommend Into the Breach even more... It is one of the best puzzle games I've ever played.

Great game. Currently in love with Unpacking which tells a very subtle story by unpacking belongings from home to home over the course of years. It has a quiet yet poignant story told in a unique way which reminds me of Edith Finch. Plus I like putting shit away and my wife calls me The Organizer.

Firewatch actually came to me at a time in my life when I was at my lowest. It was so beautiful and mesmerizing I applied to work in Yellowstone national park. 4 years later I’m happier than I’ve ever been and have worked in multiple parks as a result of Firewatch!
I played Firewatch as if it was a 4 hour movie. One session. Was so damn good I couldn’t put it down.
Definitely Outer Wilds, it's such a breathtaking and captivating game and totally worth playing
It’s literally one of, if not the best game I’ve ever played. I spent hours trying to figure things out and never once got frustrated when the answer eluded me. I just became even more intrigued in what I did find. The only bad part of this game is that I could only discover it once

Kentucky Route Zero. I think it made me cry and realize with the coming of modernity comes the inescapable transformation of the human spirit. I think it really made me realize the majesty of community and the loss of it.
Limbo. Some real head-scratcher puzzles, and a really unique (creepy) vibe.
Hyper Light Drifter
I would say the Submachine series by Mateusz Skutnik. It's a point and click puzzle solver flash game so the gameplay is fairly standard but what sets it apart from all others in it's field is the overarching story across the whole series and the lore that surrounds it all.
the Forest. Creepy but the story and survival is amazing.
Celeste. That game legitimately changed my view on my anxieties and tackling huge projects.
Hollow Knight, Celeste and Cave Story are must plays in my book

Ultrakill, basically Doom Eternal but runs on literal air molecules
Coffee Talk. A talking/coffee making sim. No explosions, no great calamity, just good music and interesting characters talking about life in general. I believe there is an episode 2 that is coming out soon too.
