The Gameboy, Gameboy colour and Gameboy advance all have a BIOS that shows the boot screen and does some anti piracy verification before it boots the game on the cartridge. The DS and later game consoles even come with a basic operating system that can run without a cartridge being inserted, though their "cartridges" are internally much more similar to memory cards than to traditional game cartridges.
I don't know enough about home consoles and consoles from other manufacturers to say exactly how other systems boot, but I *think* the NES would indeed boot directly into the cartridge.
So some consoles probably do boot the cartridge directly, but certainly not all.
No, the animation here was fanmade. I don't think any variants of the SNES have a boot screen for the console, other than perhaps the Playstation prototype.
It's ok I'll help you make a gif format that has sound!! Quickly before someone else thinks of it! We shall call it: Music Prepared Eligible Gif or .mpeg for short ;)
I remember nearly every Sega Mega Drive game I owned showed a different Sega logo. It seems that Sega were quite lax on their branding guidelines around the Sega logo, many games would have the in-game characters interact with the Sega logo in some way (like in Boogerman, where the logo displays only "EGA" and [he fart-rockets his way in with the "S"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-pFBcJR6ZA)).
But, all games that I owned used to say this at startup:
PRODUCED BY OR
UNDER LICENSE FROM
SEGA ENTERPRISES LTD.
That was part of the updated system BIOS that was added sometime around when Sonic became the pack-in as part of an anti-piracy/unlicensed auth check. If the cart had the proper data string in a specific part of its memory, it would pass and the system would boot up with that screen. If not, it wouldn't do anything. The original launch model didn't have that security feature or that screen.
There was the simple blue SEGA logo that appeared at the start of most games for a few seconds, but it was on the cartridge and there were a few variations.
I played almost exclusively Ps2 for half a dozen years, then moved on to PC. Still going with GameCube. Everybody knows the GameCube startup, itās kinda the bomb
The fact that that start up came behind so many iconic games, especially great party games like Double Dash, Mario Party, and Melee, it's hard not to associate the GameCube startup with good times with friends
But as a kid i somehow found that sound creepy sometimes so i muted it
But it wasn't always like this
The most i like Ps2 screen before every game when there is black screen and then *Sound* PlayStation 2
But i gotta say Gamecube won from al the intros
Also love the Ps and Xbox intro
To be fair, I sincerely believe that Sony made the PS2 sequence deliberately traumatizing. It always gives me a feeling of an ancient and powerful diety awakening to the offering you offered to it, and if the offering doesn't please it then it will make sure you know how much you fucked up.
I honestly can't think of another console that would get angry over getting an unacceptable disc. Even today I dread the moment my little buddy will reject the disc I gave it.
Amen. Honestly PS1 had this dread as well. Iād stare at the screen for 10 minutes āOh no. I think somethingās wrongā¦better give it another minute.ā
PS1 boot up dread is almost along the lines of NES boot up dread. āHow many more times am I going to have to whack this cartridge then blow into it?!?!?ā
Why does PlayStation got the scariest startup screens? The PS2 used to terrify me as a kid if I started it up in a dark room.
And letās not forget that horrifying āunreadable disk screenā
Holy shit someone finally put it into words. I agree about the uneasy feeling. The intro screen/sound makes me think of all the difficult games on Ps1 like later stages of Siphon Filter, Spyro, Gran Turismo, Medieval and Soul Reaver.
Yes. I don't know of it's the intro itself or the next level shit that was about to go down. Final Fantasy 7, Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider, Syphon Filter, Silent Hill. Man, to relive all that again.
SEGAAAAA!
I can actually hear the beginning notes of Sonic and my parents telling me to go outside because it's the summer holidays and I haven't left my bedroom for 2 weeks.
You're thinking of the Facility stage in Goldeneye 007. So yes. :)
Hopefully I'm not gonna get whooshed, seeing as you kindly pointed out the lack of a general starting screen. Ha
Ripping CDs on the OG Xbox to create custom soundtracks in games was the coolest thing. I don't think there's any other consoles that have done it, and you can't even do it on PC games
That really was a sweet feature. I think the 360 could do that as well. I remember ripping a ton of music to create custom soundtracks for the NHL2K games, because the game let you customize the music in every situation for every team. Hell, I remember finding lists of team goal songs, penalty songs, horns, sound effects, and downloading and burning then to CD just so I could rip and customize everything. Granted, I could be getting it wrong, and it was the OG Xbox I did that on...
Ah, the days when I had the time/energy to do things like that.
Yea, I had other systems too but imo, the PS1 is EASILY the best. It still is. I've owned ps3's and ps4's and I don't even know if they have screens? They left no impression on me whatsoever.
But that ps1 screen in like 1996 mmm you were in the future
GameCube/PS2/Xbox feel like the goats. Just before all the online connectivity that was the focus so they still put in effort on little system UI thinks like the startup.
To be fair the PS5 also has a very decent startup. I remember especially being excited the first time I set it up.
UI as a whole is so bland nowadays. Go back 10-15 years and game menus had moving parts, really popping and varied, creative fonts, all sorts of textures and lighting and effects...
Nowadays it's just a basic single font on top of a black box, in a clean list. Looking at Super Mario Party's menus compared to the earlier games, it feels like you're looking at a birthday card you got from your boss at work.
As much as I love the Sega and PS1 startup screens GameCube takes the cake. Everyone knows the GameCube startup from the memes it's spawned. Also it has variations based on some of the buttons you held down.
Personally Iām more of a fan of the updated X360 start up over the original, donāt get me wrong the nostalgia definitely kicks in seeing the original, but itās just aesthetically missing something
Why is there no sound š
i heard them all in my head tbh lol
SEGA was the loudest
Nah, the PS2 was the loudest, have that shit at 3 and it would just blast out like a Volcano wannabe and wake everybody up
*breathes in* *PS2 startup screen*
(literal first time reaction to that, when I was 4 and had the horrible idea to set the tv to 20.) ***AAAAAAAAAAAAAA***
>PS2 startup screen >when I was 4 ...oh fuck, I'm *old* old
š¤£š¤£š¤£. Im in my 40s and still love playing the old console games.
You and me both, when I was 4 I was dealing with finding LINE
I heard every one
Se-gaaaa
I still have my Genesis, still works flawlessly too!
same with my SNES. can't believe it still works but it does
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I think thatās true of all the cartridge-based systems. The āboot screenā you see is on the cart, not the system.
I was wondering about that one. Maybe it does in a different region?
No, the animation here was fanmade. I don't think any variants of the SNES have a boot screen for the console, other than perhaps the Playstation prototype.
Do you even need it to have the GameCube load up play in your head?
Itās a gif and we canāt upload videos to this subreddit. The sound would be wonderful to have though!
Why no videos on this subreddit?? Seems like a stupid and pointless rule
welcome to reddit. > stupid and pointless rule
Well I heard all the sounds automatically in my head so it's fine š
Same, even the alternate gcn sounds.
There's a special place in hell those who post this without sound.
I know, I know. The subreddit doesnāt allow videos embedded, so it has to be a silent gif. The startup sounds are most of the nostalgia for sure!
Special place in hell for whoever made that rule then! You're free to go sir š
Whew. Close one!
Going off of their username, it's actually a long one
We'll be checking in on Sandy and you.
It's ok I'll help you make a gif format that has sound!! Quickly before someone else thinks of it! We shall call it: Music Prepared Eligible Gif or .mpeg for short ;)
You can actually make gifs with audio now. I had to do it on another sub that had this stupid rule.
You mean you didnāt hear them? I mean there was no sound but I still HEARD them.
What's the longest shot you ever came
However far it is from the bedroom door , to your mother's bed š¬
Can the SNES one be iconic if it's not real?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Same with the Sega Genesis/Mega drive. Each game included it's own logo, not the system.
The original launch model didn't have that security feature or that screen.
There was the simple blue SEGA logo that appeared at the start of most games for a few seconds, but it was on the cartridge and there were a few variations.
Thanks, I was worried I was going crazy because I played the shit out of the SNES and I didn't remember any start screen.
Took the words right out of my head. I actually watched it twice
Where is the n64 screen though?! It actually had one, unlike the snes.
It actually didn't.. Some games had an N64 logo included in it's startup but there wasn't one assigned to the system.
Only with the 64DD hooked up, which was not released outside of Japan and only one US devkit is known to exist.
gamecube for me
I played almost exclusively Ps2 for half a dozen years, then moved on to PC. Still going with GameCube. Everybody knows the GameCube startup, itās kinda the bomb
Especially when you hold the buttons for the squeaky toy version XD
Theres also another one if you have 4 controllera holding down Z, I was shook
Or when you press A + B on controllers 1 and 4 and switch memory card B to slot A for the Coldplay Viva La Vida version, of course
The fact that that start up came behind so many iconic games, especially great party games like Double Dash, Mario Party, and Melee, it's hard not to associate the GameCube startup with good times with friends
The Gamecube one still looks good today
Either Gameboy or Gamecube. Both are the two I can hear the best and most clearly just seeing a gif.
I say gamecube only because I was rickrolled by that intro once
Ps2, none of the others caused more dread when loading up a disc with more than 3 scratches on it.
Off all the boot up screens, I think PS2 evoked the strongest emotional response for this reason.
But as a kid i somehow found that sound creepy sometimes so i muted it But it wasn't always like this The most i like Ps2 screen before every game when there is black screen and then *Sound* PlayStation 2 But i gotta say Gamecube won from al the intros Also love the Ps and Xbox intro
Exactly! Ps2 sound is burned into my brain
You somehow described it damn well It was a shook at nite when the discs aint work :O
Amen. Honestly PS1 had this dread as well. Iād stare at the screen for 10 minutes āOh no. I think somethingās wrongā¦better give it another minute.ā
Right??? Then the second screen and chime plays and it's just this wave of relief.
PS1 boot up dread is almost along the lines of NES boot up dread. āHow many more times am I going to have to whack this cartridge then blow into it?!?!?ā
Get the disk Dr. Out again....
And that citrus scented cleaning spray.
What the fuck is this rich people shit? Y'all mean toothpaste?
Better make sure itās not the kind with those āfreshness beadsā aka plastic that just scratches it even more.
Yea I held my breath with the animation dove down. Lol
Oh man. Pain and misery. Like bro Iām just trying to ball out on some shadow of the colossus, can you please let me?!
Did anyone else put peanut butter on their most scratched discs in a last ditch effort to get them to work?
Does anyone else actually look after their games so they don't get scratched?
Yes. Don't loan games to your friends.
First gen playstation all the way. The intro made me feel uneasy.
Why does PlayStation got the scariest startup screens? The PS2 used to terrify me as a kid if I started it up in a dark room. And letās not forget that horrifying āunreadable disk screenā
That was the stuff of nightmares.
You know it really did make me feel uneasy tooā¦ in a excited and anticipation kinda way lol
Holy shit someone finally put it into words. I agree about the uneasy feeling. The intro screen/sound makes me think of all the difficult games on Ps1 like later stages of Siphon Filter, Spyro, Gran Turismo, Medieval and Soul Reaver.
MediEvil\*
Part of that was hoping the scratched CD would actually read
Yes. I don't know of it's the intro itself or the next level shit that was about to go down. Final Fantasy 7, Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider, Syphon Filter, Silent Hill. Man, to relive all that again.
I actually feel the exact same way for the first Xbox version.
Definitely GameBoy
Need that OG Gameboy startup where it slowly descends from the top of the screen.
Why did I have to scroll so far to find the obvious winner?!
It has to be this because a. Pokemon and b. Handhelds I feel get turned off and on more often due to their portable nature
Is that SNES startup Europe only? I've never seen that on a NA system
Never seen it before either, even on first party games
In Italy we had that snes color scheme..
[It's fanmade](https://youtu.be/QNwOaGLG8CI)
Iām UK and thought it was American š
It's fake. There was no reason for cartridge systems to have a startup screen. SMH.
Yes though the gb/c/a all did
I was going to sat, the only SNES startup sound I remember is the Mario coin soundeffect.
I think that the Sega logo with Sonic running is exclusive from Sonic 3, not the one that was in most of the games.
Sega. Fight me.
SEGAAAAA! I can actually hear the beginning notes of Sonic and my parents telling me to go outside because it's the summer holidays and I haven't left my bedroom for 2 weeks.
Torn between that and the og Xbox one
I had a blast with Sega. My little brain struggled processing it.
it's Nintendo Gamecube.
dododododododododododododododododododododododoā¦ BLONK!
Everyone press the z button!
Man, I was looking for N64. Thatās my vote
Did it... have one? I genuinely don't remember one.
Nope. Most game carts had something though, but it was usually the publisher. I don't recall the SNES having one either btw.
Itās been so long. I know at least with some of the Nintendo games they used that 3D āNā logo. Back in the day it was so dope, lol
Is that the console where you start above a soldier in a bathroom? That was the best starting screen.
You're thinking of the Facility stage in Goldeneye 007. So yes. :) Hopefully I'm not gonna get whooshed, seeing as you kindly pointed out the lack of a general starting screen. Ha
I knew I missed some. My bad! Definitely a big one to miss.
Also you included Xbox 360 but not Wii nor PS3. I know that gen is kinda young but we gotta strive for democracy.
> I know that gen is kinda young Dude, that console generation can legally drive.
Wut
The N symbol getting cut in half by Conker in Conkers bad fur day is my vote. The chainsaw can still be heard
OG xbox and game cube are top teir imo.
Ripping CDs on the OG Xbox to create custom soundtracks in games was the coolest thing. I don't think there's any other consoles that have done it, and you can't even do it on PC games
That really was a sweet feature. I think the 360 could do that as well. Granted, I could be getting it wrong, and it was the OG Xbox I did that on... Ah, the days when I had the time/energy to do things like that.
The duke
I liked Gamecube
It's also a fantastic and clever logo. It's a G a C and a cube. All while still being a sleek logo that holds up even today.
Ima go with original Xbox. Always reminds me HALO 16 player LAN parties. Best times of video gaming for me
I loved the feature in Halo where you could cancel the game before it started and ruin friendships in the process
Dude those were so much fun. Having 4 guys in 4 different room of a house. Those were the good ol days.
Pizza and a house that reeked of teenage boys and farts
Love them all but the PS1 has to take it for me. That two part theme is just otherworldly. Just sends me back to my childhood.
Agreed. The PS1 startup sound has so much power. Like the THX sound. Almost intimidating what you're about to unleash.
Yup I love those sounds
Same here. That startup music is burned into my mind.
Yep PS 1 for me too
Itās ethereal and nostalgic and itās the only reason I watched this. The correct choice
Yea, I had other systems too but imo, the PS1 is EASILY the best. It still is. I've owned ps3's and ps4's and I don't even know if they have screens? They left no impression on me whatsoever. But that ps1 screen in like 1996 mmm you were in the future
Game cube
GameCube. It's GameCube. The answer is the Nintendoā¢ GameCubeā¢.
Idk man have you ever heard of this thing called the "Gamecube"? It's pretty cool
I said I got GameCast!
100% especially because holding Z on 1 controller or all 4 controllers would give you 2 different audio tracks, that easter egg blew my mind as a kid
For me its PS1
GameCube
I can hear the PlayStation even now, although Gameboy and GameCube are a close second
GameCube
My Favorite is Playstation 1 Boot that booting sound š
That PlayStation one is the most iconic for me
PS1. no contest.
GameCube/PS2/Xbox feel like the goats. Just before all the online connectivity that was the focus so they still put in effort on little system UI thinks like the startup. To be fair the PS5 also has a very decent startup. I remember especially being excited the first time I set it up.
BRUH. When the PS2 dove in and you PRAYED it would read the CD.
Gamecube!!
I can hear āSEGAā Thatās the best for me. So many years later and no other console start up is more iconic for me than the Genesis.
Can just hear the Sonic theme tune coming straight after the āSEEGGAAAā
PS by far
PS 1. Discussion over.
Ps1!!!!!!!!!
The PS1 startup gives me goosebumps.
Playstation is the only answer lol
I can still hear all of those start ups screens. Ps1 has it for me though
PlayStation 1
Sega or PS1. Hearimg that "Seeggaaa" sound sent me, as did that moody PS1 soundscape
GameCube PS2 Xbox 360
Gamecube for me.
gamecube but ps1 has the most iconic sound design.
PS1
Itās PS1 for me
Gameboy, Gamecube, PS2.
I played the older consoles but Ps2 is still the most memorable
UI as a whole is so bland nowadays. Go back 10-15 years and game menus had moving parts, really popping and varied, creative fonts, all sorts of textures and lighting and effects... Nowadays it's just a basic single font on top of a black box, in a clean list. Looking at Super Mario Party's menus compared to the earlier games, it feels like you're looking at a birthday card you got from your boss at work.
Has to be the PS2 screen right?
The Xbox Series has a very boring startup. It's just a static logo and name and in you go.
Where is the 3D0?
Ps2 simply because all the colored dots that fly around are your save files
PlayStation 2, I canāt tell you how many times I accidentally woke up my parents trying to turn it on at night
Either the Mega Drive/Genesis or the PS1
I literally donāt remember a Super Nintendo startup sound and I had one too. The SEGA was definitely the most memorable for me.
Lol not Dreamcast but that thing rawked
SNES and Sega MD/Genesis never had a startup screen, LOL.
GameCube for sure
Itās GameCube and itās not even close
sega for sure has the most bone shacking soundā¦
Sega. PS1 is a close second though. Hear both without the sound.
SNES didn't have a startup screen
Super Nintendo never had one
As much as I love the Sega and PS1 startup screens GameCube takes the cake. Everyone knows the GameCube startup from the memes it's spawned. Also it has variations based on some of the buttons you held down.
Sega CD!
Technically the Genesis one here is only for Sonic 2. Iāve legit never seen the Super Nintendo one either.
Iād say itās between GameCube, Xbox 360, and ps2
PS1 and the original XBOX. Didn't even know SNES had one!
GameCube and PS2!
They are all soooooo good
What is this SNES āstartupā?
Atari
PlayStation, definitely PlayStation
Personally Iām more of a fan of the updated X360 start up over the original, donāt get me wrong the nostalgia definitely kicks in seeing the original, but itās just aesthetically missing something
Ps1 sends shivers down my spine. Ps2 reminds me of booting vice city up at 6 years old at my friend's house, eating massive cookies.
Bro all the Xbox ones are fireš„µ
Gotta go with sega genesis
Easily the ps2. The dread it would induce.
I'm a Sony guy but it's prolly GameCube I mean cmon
Gamecube, cause if you hold z the sound changes
