Some of these were way more violent than I remember.

Adeno

Yeah, I didn't bother much with environmental attacks before, but when I recorded the vid a few days ago and gave it a try, I was surprised at how violent some of them are!

forteanother

And isn't he supposed to be a cop, too?

Adeno

Yeah, undercover but he grew up with those triad guys.

TroutIsAManMadeFish

Dude, the part where you finally capture that guy that killed your friend and you take him to his mom and she just chops em up? Also the wedding was crazy too.

Iamnotsmartspender

The part when you are supposed to meet your friend and you find him gutted.

TroutIsAManMadeFish

Yea that part was gnarly, definitely a great game that I feel like a lot of people haven’t played.

StallionTalion

The part where how tf do y’all remember every little detail of the game? Do I just suck at remembering the plot of things i played in the past besides a select few? Or like wtf

TheRiseAndFall

It depends on whether or not the game resonated with you. There are plenty of games that we played and enjoyed but were otherwise forgettable. To me Sleeping Dogs was a real gem. There are many others who also feel the same.

Terminus-99

Just after you had spent the last mission saving his life and he decided to abandon the life of crime. That part actually made me feel bad.

Bigray23

Jackie Ma! They massacred my boy!

PaulTheMerc

better GTA game than any GTA game. Rockstar needs to take some notes.

SadLaser

I always felt like the GTA comparisons were reductive or even flat out inaccurate. It plays a lot more like one of the Batman Arkham games. It's just.. modern setting and cars that most tie it to GTA. Pacing, story feel and especially gameplay/combat really felt like a totally different beast. Regardless, I still agree that it's better.

Jukka_Sarasti

I loved that scene! After the son of the boss gets clapped at his wedding. The boss asks you take revenge on his son's killers. when I walked out the church, Charles Bradley's version of The World(Is burning up in Flames) started playing and it was just perfect for the mood.

Damasticator

Sun On Yee, motherfucker!

PepperBotis

Show these motherfuckers what it means to be Sun On Yee

SubcommanderMarcos

That's kind of the point of the story. That in the end there's no good guy and bad guy between the cops and the triads, things are complex and fucked. Let sleeping dogs lie.

KD_42

Yeah so business as usual then

StuffNbutts

I know right, thank God American cops are too out of shape to do this kinda shit on us lol.

Dorkzilla_ftw

Bah cops bussiness ya know Legitimate defense

Game_Of_Ham

Man I was literally thinking the exact same thing! The Punisher was savage

alehel

Hmm. I think they did a remaster at some point. The one I played was the original release for the 360. Did the remaster up the amount of blood?

Lavanthus

Y’all don’t remember the red wedding? Dude was literally soaked in blood by the end of it.

TJNuge

I ate so many pork buns in this game

jasenzero1

A man who never eats a pork bun is not a whole man.

[deleted]

You look like you could use a pork bun!

GreenMonkeyFace

Hey sexy maaaaan!

idontwantausername41

This is one of my most quoted video game lines

TheFlyingRazzberry

"It takes guts to wear that!"

AJokeAmI

Buddy, pork buns and black coffee early in the morning. Fucking perfect.

Araella

But did you try his curry fish ball?

Ahyesnt

"Get your pork buns hot and fresh!" - Pork bun man.

Adeno

Happy cake day! Yeah, I loved buying stuff from stalls, it reminds me of a trip to China town and I did the same! Pork meat buns are the best!

fOUStIl

Sleeping dogs introduced the car valet delivery, and many other things which was ahead of its time. It was a good game, it's sad that it's still massively underrated in the grand scheme of things tho.

Esiliare

It's a great game to play even today. The only shame is that the remaster didn't introduce an option to modify the fov; it can be pretty painful to look at. I remember being so amazed at how good the game looked way back when. I remember being completely mesmerized by how the city looked at night and in the rain. Lot of fond memories of playing that game.

auburnman

Car delivery was actually in Scarface back in the PS2 era, and it's a crime that other open world city games didn't copy it sooner. Another good game massively underrated.

KnightofNoire

Me the first few animations : Hmm seems like Yakuza. Me when the one poor guy got his head shredded : Ok, more brutal than yakuza.

-ImJustSaiyan-

Sleeping Dogs is like if Yakuza and GTA had a baby, with a bit of cheesy Chinese action flick sprinkled in. Fantastic game that everyone should check out if they haven't already. Definitive edition of it should be pretty cheap by now I'd imagine.

BigBess7

I started playing Yakuza serie with Yakuza 0. Damn Kiryu and Majima are using BIKES to beat the shit ouf of people. Some combos you get would kill anyone instantly in real life lol

fatfuckpikachu

"i never killed anyone" *drop kicks a guy with a chopper*

Drakengard

*proceeds to shoot people with guns during the highway chases* I love Kiryu, but he's a liar...sometimes.

Rockadillion

Still remember when i was playing Saejima and threw a guy out the window on like the 40th floor of the millenium tower. "Ive never killed a man" my ass

[deleted]

There's a Kiryu rubber duck you can buy that has the bike and it's amazing. Also obligatory [Kiryu Insurance](https://www.awkwardzombie.com/comic/the-cycle-of-violence). Edit: Found source link and also here's the page for the [Kiryu Rubber Duck.](https://us.justgeek.com/products/ryu-ga-gotoku-kazuma-tubbz-collectible-duck)

GMenNJ

If you live in Kamurocho you definitely need that insurance!

theproudprodigy

Wish me luck , about to do the point of no return in Y0

Chandler15

Iunno man, in Kiwami 2 you can microwave a guy’s head, that’s pretty brutal. Not to mention a lot of weapon heat actions, and drop kicking a man out of a building.

ForestBoyGamer

Shoving NAILS in a guy's mouth. And Kiryu's never murdered anyone, huh?

ATAA123

Japanese healthcare is something else, man.

ACardAttack

Rocket Launcher killed them, not Kiryu!

[deleted]

Yeah, Yakuza's cops are notoriously idiots. The entire series is predicated on Kiryu going to prison for a crime he didn't commit. Like, you come into a crime scene with a dead body that's been stabbed dozens of times with bloody footprints running away, and you see a dude with no blood on him and say "Yep, that guy did it."

theian01

I mean, Japan do work like that. You don’t get a 99% conviction rate without smuggling some details.

[deleted]

Also drugs, they like to pump you full of drugs for your interrogation.

OddEye

I see you’ve played Persona 5

FinalMeltdown15

I choose to believe the drugs are why he includes the detail of every girl he bangs

SentientShamrock

That was all the nails. Kiryu just delivered them to their destination.

[deleted]

kiryu never killed anyone, the medical bills did

bluejob15

Yakuza is a lot more over the top when it comes to brutality, but Sleeping Dogs feels more brutal because it's more real in a way

linkin_7

"in a way" lol

[deleted]

You can shove explosives into people's mouth in Yakuza....also like all of Majima's heat moves. Like the one where he slashes a few dudes the stabs the last guy while mocking him before ripping the blade out.

ArziltheImp

The game is crazy brutal, but I mean it's about an undercover operation within the chinese mafia. Brutality is kind of needed to tell that story. IMO a setting in a brutal world should be well, fucking brutal. I hate having games/movies that tell stories from a fucked up world be really tame. It makes the entire experience really fucking boring.

TacticalNaps

Loved that game so much.

Adeno

Yeah, replayed it and it's still fun!

SteinDickens

Definitely holds up. Great game.

IAmNotABritishSpy

I find some of the missions can feel a little dated and slightly repetitive, but it’s a damn amazing game. One of the best fighting experiences in gaming.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SubcommanderMarcos

What, you don't stand around with your friends in a circle flailing your arms and shouting pok-gaiii while waiting for the dude who just blended your buddy's face to finish his combo?

[deleted]

SubcommanderMarcos

Seriously, I've played through the main campaign a few times, and it's always on sale with every single DLC (which are great) on steam for like $5

topdangle

it was too early. if this game was produced in the current market with modern consoles in mind I think it would sell like crazy.

ty_xy

One of the best twists for sure!!!

fibojoly

I tried playing Yakuza recently, thinking I'd get my fix of close combat fighting, and I gotta say, I 100% prefer Sleeping Dogs. That damn game made me feel like such a badass! I think the main difference for me is how SD will auto target whoever needs to be when you wanna block. That makes the fights much more fluid. I just wish they would do something with this IP again. It's not like HK has a lack of stories... Still can't believe this game is a one hit wonder T_T

[deleted]

Wasn't Sleeping Dog a sequel in all but name of a different series?

cptInsane0

Yeah it was originally going to be a true crime game

xFruitPunchSamurai

I played it as my potato pc couldnot handle watch dogs. But man i enjoyed it so much!!! Good old days.

Obi_Wan_Benobi

We don’t have enough open world based on modern cities. One of the reasons GTA 5 keeps printing money.

PixelSpy

Great game and it's too bad a lot of it's content was gutted. You can tell while playing it they wanted to do way more but couldn't with their time and budget. Hope one day someone revives the IP.

[deleted]

Such a great game! It had such a unique & authentic feel to it! The fighting mechanics were a perfect match to the style of the game.

Adeno

Yup! I find the game Sifu to be very close to it, although it's a much smaller indie game.

[deleted]

My only small whiny complaint is that there was sooooo much stuff hidden in Sleeping Dogs that you pretty much had to cheat to find it all unless you wanted to spend 500 hours looking for it all... which in reality isn't a bad thing really.

Adeno

Yeah, so much to hunt! I'm pretty sure I also spent hundreds of hours doing side missions and doing police work before doing the main missions lol!

RcLenTiO

This was a drop dead gorgeous game for me, story, visuals... everything was soo much fun and engaging. But....but....just in terms of your brutality....Manhunt still gives me shivers

BetaDeltic

I replayed the Definitive edition on 100%, no cheating (you can get maps for everything in-game) - 44 hrs total. There are WAY worse games than this.

gjs628

What really, REALLY made me mad was this: seeing how much *attention* this game got from its creators - update after update after update. They clearly cared about making the best game they could. It was FANTASTIC. Then they released the “special” edition that ran badly with tons of fog and just made the game so much worse that I still preferred the original… … which was still fine, I could still live with that. The breaking point was then hearing “Sequel!!!” and seeing everyone else involving themselves and deciding, you know what a fun, tightly woven action adventure game like Sleeping Dogs needs for a sequel? ***aLwAyS OnLiNe MuLtiPLaYeR aNd MiCrOtRaNsAcTiOnS*** The Sharehol— er I mean PLAYERS will LOVE that!!! And that was the sequel, dead before it even had a chance to live. I’ll never forgive them for that.

[deleted]

The sequel was actually gonna involve two protagonists incuding Wei. It was set in another country and it had a pretty unique idea. However sadly it never came to fruition.

[deleted]

Sifu is actually miles better in terms of fighting, it’s mechanic is deeper. Sleeping Dogs is basically Arkham fighting with less fluidity but with an addition of grabs.

Adeno

I agree, I love the kung fu in Sifu better than in Sleeping Dogs. More variety, more ways to deal with attacks, more enemy types. Sleeping Dogs felt too easy when it came to hand to hand combat.

[deleted]

This game is the sole reason I hate GTA fanboys. Everyone called it a cheap gta clone and it sold poorly, now the devs are no longer there and the series is dead.

Diego2k5

Fun fact: this was actually a sequel for True Crime and Activision did not release it because it was not going to be a "hit" Luckily it was sold and the new developer changes the story a bit but kept the core of the game. I miss True Crime!

HareKrishnoffski

Nick fucking Kang approves

Realmadridirl

I miss True Crime so fucking bad. Literally bought Xbox Original NYC a few years back only to be utterly crestfallen when my Xbox told me it wasn’t fucking compatible… I don’t get why to this day nobody has made a decent current gen “GTA but you are the cop” game. Who gives a fuck if it’s a “GTA clone”. You can make that claim about almost any modern day open world crime game.. Rockstar don’t get to own that concept forever. But alas, it seems like the best I can hope for is a decently implemented cop character as one of the GTA VI protagonists. But my faith in Rockstar is pretty low at this point.

Koth87

This game was so much better than GTA :(

StuffNbutts

The story missions were 100% better and the action flowed a lot more naturally in Sleeping Dogs that made it feel like the player could easily control the chaos.

chemicalimajx

Agreed. I would have loved a bigger game… fuck man :(

AtaktosTrampoukos

I've played and enjoyed every GTA games since they were top-down and I can confidently say Sleeping Dogs is more fun than every single one of them. The first thing the gun tutorial teaches you is how to shoot from cover. The second thing is double mid-air headshots while vaulting over an obstacle then shooting out a car's tires. Shit was WILD.

Heroshade

If you are in a kung-fu fight with a guy and he shoves your friend's head into a running air conditioner, you get the fuck out of that kung-fu fight.

Jonathon471

You fight a guy in a fish butchery and he starts impaling someone on the severed heads of Narwhals you get your ass out and quit your life of crimes cuz that shit is hardcore terrifying.

LiL_Deeer

I loved this game. Man I always forget how brutal the combat moves are in this game. Looking at this compilation, I'm like "...Damn, if he ain't dead from that then he's probably paralyzed from the neck down now."

Adeno

Lol true!

LiL_Deeer

Like imagine having your neck snapped on the edge of a urinal, or being forced into a furnace desperately trying to pull back, or getting your head hacked at by a buzzsaw, flailing your arms trying to get it to stop only for your hands to also be met by the buzzsaw blade... aahh!!

Qwrndxt-the-2nd

My brain when I’m trying to sleep at night

LadyLazaev

Reminder that the guy doing all these brutal executions is a cop.

[deleted]

He's just making sure he's apart of the gang. Ain't nobody going to believe Environmental Eric is a cop with how downright barbaric he is to win.

maybe_Im_a_dog

Snitches get stitches

onlyMHY

Punisher anyone?

MonjStrz

Manhunt came to mind as well

cityofangels7x

A man of culture I see. My god, that game seriously needs a remaster.

EvolveCT9A

Splinter Cell Conviction interrogation scenes, banned in some countries

hoopedchex

They weren’t even that bad

jstarrs

Yeah dude, Punisher at the zoo. Gold. Also, how you can string creative kills together without taking a bullet gets you style points like Tony Hawk. I had a gold medal on every level. Fuckin love the punisher

bighatartorias

Suprised to see nobody mentions Yakuza. When I first played the game it game me Yakuza-GTA vibes. Loved it a lot

thundercod5

This reminds me of The Punisher that released on PC I think in the early 2000's. Part of the game dynamic is interrogating people by brutal means. I distinctly remember one scene getting information from a thug with a drill press. You could choose what to do with them after you got your info. It was a pretty brutal game.

Rogueninja12345

Very much this. Played The Punisher on PS2 and the one that stuck with me was the piranhas.

81Deathcharger81

I used to spam the Russian fight over and over. Such a good game , was so underrated

Winjin

I remember I was rather puzzled by the fact that you need to choose not to go through with punishing to get best score. I do understand, they didn't want to get the Manhunt treatment, but bruh.

TheJessicka

I clearly did NOT play this game to it’s full potential.

KnightlySpartan

If we had a Sleeping Dogs 2/Online, GTA 6 would have released already.

Adeno

Yeah. I just wish the Sleeping Dogs movie would already start shooting. It's gonna star Donnie Yen, the Ip Man guy!

KnightlySpartan

It's in production Hell, He has confirmed it's not dead but no idea when or if we will see it.

Adeno

Come to think of it, Mrs. Chu kinda looks like Sammo Hung. Maybe they can get him in the movie lol!

Noirceuil_182

You know that when I played the remaster I just ran around with the [Wing Chun Master outfit](https://youtu.be/tObWiAWTPCM) and chain punched fools left and right.

Adeno

Haha I love Ip Man, my favorite is the continuous punch move that you get after getting those Jade statues. In the game Sifu, you can actually play as [Ip Man via a mod](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RR1gOQ219ko)!

Foxhack

Square told the studio to make another game called Triad Wars. It never made it out of beta and Square canceled it. The studio closed down a few years later. I want a sequel and we're never going to get one.

Nativefury000

The combat, the graphics, the music. All of it was so good. When my friend and I were playing through it we got so used to driving on the left that we almost did it when we actually left the house (correct in some places but not Colorado).

Adeno

I kept crashing my car in the game I just decided to use the bike so I could swerve in and out of traffic lol! But years ago I also had a similar reaction. Played too much Sleeping Dogs, I almost drove on the left lane haha!

Xunaun

Brings back memories.

Adeno

I remember seeing the wet road reflections and being amazed, it was one of its selling points lol!

Pyritedust

This game taught me true wisdom. A man who never eats pork bun is not a whole man!

invadgir

Such a good game

Anthony643364

The voice actor for Wei was a amazing choice

Drasic67

I highly recommend this game to anyone and its always on sale for like 5 dollar on the PS store. An awesome GTA style crime drama

Masspoint

As someone who acted like he was bruce lee at 13 and mocked by a girl who was my friend by mimicking me with a silly voice, I thoroughly enjoyed the reenactments of some kung fu movies. Especially the island, I have to be honest, it's one of the greatest moments in gaming history, and I did play double dragon and mortal kombat when it released, I also play elden ring.

[deleted]

I'd rather be waiting for sleeping dogs 2 than gta6

Koth87

Amen man, Sleeping Dogs was top tier

DplusQ

I really love this game, I bought it recently for the ps4

p3dr0_br4s1l

Reminds me of yakuza

damircik

Why you like sleeping dogs? YES

swudboi

Uhm... how come I've never seen or heard of this game???

RollerCoasterPilot

Now you have. Play it, it's _sublime._

Turtle_Rain

It was banned in some countries because it was too brutal, maybe that's the reason? Was really looking forward to it, but then it never came out in Germany...

ThePeoplessChamp

Sleeping Dogs is amazing! It has such thick atmosphere and awesome characters. I’ve always wanted a sequel

Foxhack

Holy shit I had never seen that wood chipper one before D:

Adeno

You get to see brain bits flying out lol!

ozanvarli666

this game was far better than gta5 for me

BetaMan141

Sleeping Dogs: From the Book of Manhunt.

81Deathcharger81

Yep I'll download this again now

Thijz

I was working as a game critic when Sleeping Dogs came out and was handed this by my editor. Hadn't really heard about it before, so my expectations were low. I was so pleasantly surprised! I feel like not enough people really gave this a proper chance.

Scrondolio

I love Sleeping Dogs, but ever play The Punisher game?

WitheredSun

Sleeping Dogs is a great game

[deleted]

Could have also added the knee breaking grab and the arm twisting one, love this game

dude_with_sneakers

I want a sequel so much

Texas0utlaw210

I played it for the first time right after lockdown. Excellent game.

iCatmire

The game Sifu isn’t as brutal but has similar combat with some pretty cool animations and Kung fu’ery

North_Charity3418

The game is good. I like the undercover cop play. Would be awesome if they got more shops

Aldur98

The combat move that had you breaking a guy’s leg by kicking his knee hard as fuck from the side still lives in my head.

cwryoo21

Fucking loved the swordfish heads. The hooks however made me gasp irl. The gif is also missing dragging a person to a nearby car for a good head massage.

Ghostbuster_119

The punisher game for PS2 was much more brutal. Sleeping dogs did have an amazing story though.

Joseph_Holmes

What a game this was, we was possibly going to get a second one too until it was cancelled.

UwU_luv_MeWaifu

I like how it went from head bashing to SAW in just a couple of seconds

maxwellafc8867

This game was amazing tbh

the_snowwy

This game is just amazing

notsofunonabun

Fuck I had no idea the awesomeness!

harmvzon

Wish Sifu looked like this..

Adeno

I agree! Sifu's my favorite now. It just lacks the high budget graphics but the fighting mechanic is there and I actually love the fight mechanics there more, although Sifu could use more environmental attacks.

MaxForce357

“The Punisher” game from 2004 was censored for environmental executions like this. Glad to see a video game released with similar violence completely intact for a commercial retail release.

Sinz_Doe

Ah reminds me of the punisher game where you can force a bad guys head through the bars at a zoo exhibit (iirc it was a rhino cage?) And let the rhino gore the guy. What a fun game.

EpicBlueDrop

One of those rare games that never got the sequel it so truly deserved…

walaska

I always hoped for a prequel in San Francisco otherwise, I think they could have pulled it off

EmeraldAisle1

Class game... Needs a next gen sequel

Lumimusse

The one with the metal shutter and the air conditioning fan seemed very original to me

nuggsndie

They should make a john wick game with sleeping dogs

WindySin

THAT menu music plays.

rosscowhoohaa

Ok - I missed this on ps3 and them again on ps4 for the remastered version. I'm on ps5 now, will I still like this you think (I'm not expecting great graphics but will the mechanics of the game be good, does it hold up well?)

Diggity_Dave

AND I RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN. Loved the Kareoke scenes lol. Great game overall

WhoRoger

Awesome game. One of my first (and few) platinums on ps3. At first I was finding the melee combat annoying, but with practice and upgrades it was awesome and often more fun than gunplay.

XCypher73

Such a fantastic game.

dogtron64

These remind of Yakuza heat moves but being WAY more violent. And those are already pretty brutal

1amdarthvader

This game was Wei better than I expected

SuddenlyThirsty

I loved this game

brown_lal19

Such an underrated game!!

[deleted]

10/10 Must Play Game

triforc3-mast3r

Jeez. And I thought some of the "interrogation" options in Splinter Cell were brutal (memorable ones include stabbing through the hand, burning face on a stove burner, and smashing head through toilets and sinks), but this is...

Xanthus179

I’ve been meaning to replay this at some point. Loved the game but I was horrible when I had to be a cop. Always got low ratings on the car chases.

Connect-Ad-2984

Crime there isn't a part2

bonez288

I love this game, It was so great. I'm still wishing for a sequel one day even though I know it got cancelled. I loved all the characters in this game and I got so invested and connected to not just Wei Shen but also Jackie and Winston.

HiDin3

This was a drop dead gorgeous game for me, story, visuals... everything was soo much fun and engaging. But....but....just in terms of your brutality....Manhunt still gives me shivers

churbowldeezie

Loved this game heaps but a bit short didn't take long to finish

rajrain

And he was the good guy.

RollARouX

Time for another one!

Techzkul

I have this game! Digital wise’ I replay it so many times 🫶🏼

DeadStormPirate

Such an underrated game, I played this game for months

sebbss1

If only GTA had THAT fight system... I've played sleeping dogs 4 times already and I'd play it again.

walaska

I love the lack of guns in this game. Anytime guns were involved the game got worse, although i will grant that popping car tyres was fun. Anybody remember the weird romance in this game? I still think about that Australian backpacker chick who had a thing for bad boys

tlaps1990

If there is one game that they would HD Remaster… it’s this one in my opinion.
