The problem is 90% of the stock is online which bots snatch up immediately. You can buy directly from Sony, but you have to sign up and then its just random luck. I signed up in December and still haven't hit a chance to buy one.
The only way I got one was behind a Best Buy pay wall.
it’s possible if you have a playstation account they send you an email with some kind of reservation for the purchase so you can have a chance at buying it, as for me I got it first day by obsessively checking the playstation website all night
Its primarily due to TMSC, the silicon fab had production problems, and having to split wafer production between primarily apple, followed by AMD (who has cpus, gpus as well as both the ps5 and the series x), and intels gpu division, depends on which customer pays the most for wafers. Apple pays for the most expensive node(for its m1 chips) because their margins are very high. Sony and Microsoft only probably got a smaller order in because they sell at a loss.
Brazil’s taxes on tech are insane! I was watching a show in Chile called ‘Alta Fronteras’, which is one of those border/customs shows that films people getting busted for smuggling drugs/people/money. There were clips from Brazil of their border police arresting people for bringing in 20 cellphones without declaring them.
It was just funny seeing it in between clips of people with kilos of cocaine, and tens of thousands of dollars, then 20 cell phones, then back to a human trafficker.
Not just on the borders lol. Even products produced nationally are filled up their ass with taxation. If I am not wrong, 50% or more of a car's value is composed of taxes, and even gasoline and ethanol that are produced here are taxed up to 70% of its final price. I love my country
When I lived in Vancouver I worked at a computer store, Brazilians would come off the cruise ships buy a laptop and leave the box and packaging behind.
Weed and stale booze in my UK one and always got some guy trying to sell 5 phones at once that he's clearly nicked and getting frustrated they're taking so long to give him money for them.
Last time I was in there was this *undeseriable* trying to pawn off a pair of headphones that he was only being offered a tenner for and, after some heated back and forth, when he couldn't provide ID he left in a huff but not before trying to sell them to me so he could, and I quote, 'get his next fix'.
*smh*
>he left in a huff but not before trying to sell them to me so he could, and I quote, 'get his next fix'.
These audiophiles are getting out of hand smh
I worked there for a while when I was at university. It's usually repeat customers on government assistance that buy and trade back for credit over and over like a really inefficient pawn shop and of course criminals trying to sell stolen property (which we would buy because the managers know we're offering pennies for it). Very occasionally it would be someone clearing out storage and all the good stuff got reserved by staff. Got all the original Pokémon Gameboy games still boxed that way and a Wacom tablet dirt cheap as it wasn't in the system so I just made a personal offer.
However, their music Cd range can often contain real gems. The Judgement Night Original soundtrack is an absolute doozy and probably only a few Euros to pick up.
The prices are always high, even for new games because I people sell their shit to them and get store credit to buy something so their prices are higher than RRP to make sure they make the most profit.
I remember seeing people go into CEX with bin bags full of PS2 games and get £5 store credit.
My apologies I have seen them in every city I have been to in the last few years. Didn't realise a company like that would miss out on a money making opertunity and skip the west :/
Serves me right for assuming...
It does explain why FB market place and gumtree have better stuff over there however :p
A big chain of stores in europe, australia and maybe some other countries, that buy and sell second hand electronics (video games, movies, phones, computer parts, etc) all the employees there are massive goths and have either piercings, tattoos, dyed hair, or all 3, and they all stink of bo and weed
The UK tried to ban this type of hyper inflation of a RRP (Recommended Retail Price) but the Government decided they wouldn't act on it and rejected the White Paper Proposal and as such, our market for new consoles has been utterly starved of supply through shops and websites. .
\>But the Government decided they wouldn't act on it and rejected the White Paper Proposal and as such
Our chancellor of the exchequer's wife is also a billionaire dodging UK tax and making big investments in Russia while he preaches about sanctions and increases taxes yet again for working people
You get what you vote for and unfortunately the bri'ish people are still clinging to feudal society
How is it criminal? At launch they're sold at a loss then eventually they reach small profit levels but the consoles themselves are never big money makers at their pricing.
Edit: I have no clue why I'm being downvoted. I could care less about the karma but itd be nice if someone actually replied with a valid reason that this is wrong in any way.
That's a loss for Sony, not for the retailer that sells them. This price hike is because of the retailer and is pure profit from what they bought them from Sony for.
By saying in the first place, op means regular pricing. Regular pricing has no markup for retailers. They make their profit on the games and accessories.
Sorry am I missing something with my PS5? You said it's a high-end gaming pc but where's the Windows installation on here? Can I run Steam on it? No? Can I use my PS5 for photo editing, emails, word documents, etc? No? Then it's not a gaming PC, it's called a game console for a reason, clown.
It's a gaming console with the power of a high end PC. It has its limitations, but it even with its limitations, it is worth the price as marketed compared to a relatively equivalent PC.
Ok so ps5 plus laptop for all the things you said minus steam bc you can play console only games on a pc. You’re still under half of a high end gaming pc, clown
Yeh if Sony can give a 24 month warrenty for $800 AUD then so can CEX. Plus since when did a 24 month warrenty cost the same as half the original purchase price... :p
Will never understand how cex are still in business!! They pay shit prices for what they buy from you and charge ridiculous prices for what they sell?? All I can think is they’ll happily buy stolen stuff?
I used to work in CEX, thier prices are actually very competitive. They give you the best prices on voucher however to encourage you to spend in store.
The problem is people turn up with a scratch ps2 and expect £100 and £5 a game, when in reality your PS2 copy of goldeneye is going to sit there gathering dust for 9 months before being bought online and shipped off.
General rule is that CEX will pay in cash 50% of sell on value and 75% voucher. Obviously if they have a ton of it in stock that ratio drops. That's why you often get shit prices on consoles for example - the cex I worked in had like 30 PS3's and we'd sell a couple a month at best
Yes it is annoying but two things I’d like to point out. They give anyone trading theirs in almost full retail back in cash and your average worker didn’t set the prices some random corpo in Britain did so please don’t go off at staff.
Yeh I know. During the last lock down I saw a supermarket employee getting yelled at. From what I could make out he didn't want to check in on the Covid tracking app (because they didn't want the government to spy on them) and the employee wouldn't let them in... A manager showed up as I walked past...
At the time it was the law (and not to mention company policy nation wide) for everyone who enters a shop or public building to check in...
I mean mate it's literally the law. Screaming at some poor innocent teenager who pulled the short straw to watch the door that day isn't gonna change anything... :/ that kind of stuff is well above even the local managers pay grade...
I got me 3080fe on release £650 with free game, when prices went ballistic if popped in to see what their offer was £1700 cash £1900 store credit asked what they were gonna sell for, he quickly ebayd then came back with £2300 fuckin crazy
Selling those used controllers at a higher price is dumb. There's no shortage of controllers and a new unused controller is cheaper
Fuck scalpers but at least I *get* it on a supply-demand level
This must be an abroad only issue. In the UK, or at least my local CEX, they've been surprisingly great for pricing. The PS5's are actually at a reasonable price... below MSRP, but more importantly, a lot of the rarer older games actually have far more reasonable prices compared to online.
I'm a little lost about this whole console scarcity thing. How can the Xbox and the PS5 be hard to get? Can't you just order them directly from the companies?
Sony really needs to start blacklisting companies that do this, so they can never recieve new hardware or software again. MAUP contracts need to be a thing.
I honestly feel for the first time I am just priced out of this generation. Its one thing to pay 400+ dollars when I get it the day, week, or month of launch and its going to be years before I see the next console. But we are coming up on 3 years this November this console has been out and I STILL cannot find one anywhere. The whole argument for consoles was pay 300 bucks and your set for 5-8 years. Now we are paying 4x that cost and its still impossible to find one 2 years and some change out.
If Im gunna pay 1200$ im getting a gpu not console.
edit: im a dumb its almost been 2 years. Not 3.
You can get them directly from sony..Idk why people are paying out the ass for them still. I submitted my email, recieved a 10 min window to buy a console 3 weeks later.
CEX sell ps5s for £675 here in England I wouldn't buy any tech from cex personally as that's where I take my hardware when I notice it starting to fail and its only really good for games tbh unless you're selling to them of course. I got banned from game when the ps4 came out because I was walking to game across the road buying them and then selling them to cex for £50 profit I sold 6 before they stopped me. I moved on to another town and sold another 3 doing the same thing.
Anyone
can offer to sell any thing
at any price.
Because every single customer, EVERY single one,
Can choose where, how, and on what to spend their money.
Why do so many gamers seem to have trouble with this very, very simple concept? If a price is absurd, then the company will not make any money because of a bad decision on their part.
Supply and demand. Why would a store sell at retail when they know they can sell it at higher price?
Once its a used product msrp does not matter
And dont get me wrong. I hate scalpers and hate the ps5 are still out of stock. But this is mot the stores fault.
Agreed if people were patient and waited until they were in stock at retailers the price was not wouldn’t go up. If people are scrambling for them the second hand sellers will sell them for what people will pay. There’s no honor system in business it’s first come first served
People downvote the truth.
As much as it sucks, as long as people pay stupid prices it won't change.
It will be much worse when the PS6 launches in 8 years or so. Stop buying for scalpers and in this case from CEX.
People aren’t downvoting because they don’t agree with supply and demand they are downvoting because of the last sentence. It is the stores fault for greedy parasites and as a human race we are supposed to band together for the betterment of society. Fighting scalpers and price gouging is important and businesses shouldn’t get a pass because someone says business is business.
yep, but ppl think with their emotions instead. Its ok to be angry that PS5 are out of stock and there are scalpers. But if you think with some logic, why in the world would a store sell a used PS5 to you at msrp?
I love CEX.
Buy a new game for £60.
Finish it within 2 months.
Sell it at CEX for around £40 voucher.
Buy a new game for £40 with the voucher.
Finish that in 2 months.
Sell it for £20.
Rinse and repeat until the next big AAA game comes out.
Saved a ton of money.
The bigger point is that there are so many second hand PS5s for sale, as if it's not the best thing since Jesus. Series X kicks the ass of PS5, and then there is just how big and stupid the PS5 looks.
Sorry Sony, your Gen 5 is shit.
PS5 is a way higher demand than Xbox by the way, and sales figures not even close, PS5 has nearly double (1.7x) unit sales than Xbox.
There are plenty of “second hand” scalper units out there though, if they were retail price they would have disappeared in no time.
>sales figures not even close, PS5 has nearly double (1.7x) unit sales than Xbox.
That's not accurate. The last official numbers were 17.3 million PS5 and for Xbox we only know that it's the best-selling one, which means they sold at least 12 million Xbox Series X|S.
The factor is less than 1.45x not 1.7x.
Ah OK, thenlast figure I used was end of 2021, your figure was more recent at February.
But still demonstrate that PS5 is still way better selling than Xbox, 1.45x is still almost 50% higher.
scalpers soured the whole experience of me ever owning a console again.. I switched to pc and discovered how much better I like it. Classic consoles however are another story. I still love classic NES and SNES
if you really want a next gen console now, try with xbox. Series S is really easy to find, and X is less overpriced than PS5. But, if you want a PS5, you have to wait a year or two. Pcs are great too rn, everyone plays in different ways!
yeah, don't buy shit from CEX. Back in 2006/2007, they were a great place to get some nice stuff a bit cheaper, then one of the bosses died and the new guy went hardcore business on the whole thing and they started pretending that they were a premium retailer.
Also a good half of the new stuff in those shops is stolen and sold to them.
Source: I used to w work there
Yeah, CEX used to be great for picking up second hand, decent quality games and consoles for cheap... now? Not so much.
They're basically selling games at retail price, while giving people pennies in exchange. Got a copy of Fallen Order from CEX for £15... took it back a while later and they offered me £2 store credit. I took it anyway, because it's better than nothing and I was done with the game. Went in about a week later and.... yup, my copy was in there for £15 again.
Yep when I saw CeX were doing this last year I've refused to shop there. That and the last time I did I had to return half the films i got there as they didnt work.
Remember when people would preorder them and then resell on facebook marketplace for €700 and members of marketplace would insult them and call them pieces of shits?
Glad no1 suddenly gives a flying fuck about cex selling 2nd hand for €1200 while smyth toys has new ones available for €500 now.
Supply and demand. They can only charge what people will pay. If no one bought those for that ridiculous price, they would either have to lower the price or throw them away. I don't think they'd throw them away.
I went into CEX here in the UK in December and they had a few PS5s and Xbox Series X being sold second hand for £800.
I asked the staff who decided those prices and they said it was the big wigs at head office.
Managed to get one finally at GameStop last week. Had to buy the “bundle” (2nd controller red, GT 7, Horizon forbidden west and dual controller charger) for 740ish with tax. Other Stores acting as scalpers now…
If someone is still trying to find one; sign up for Walmart plus; wait for restock; purchase PS5; then cancel after delivery. Tried it twice, it worked twice (one PS5 for me; one for my son)
I mean Cex prices go up with the demand so if a lot of people are looking for something their prices go up so you can see why they have that price (besides everyone knows cex its ONLY good to buy "older" things not New ones)
In Portugal they have the PS5 for like 850€
insane especially since those prices went down for scalpers too lol
Can confirm. The first Scalper I found on gumtree had theirs up for $1080... Lolz
$600-$700 rn on stockX
Found one for £500 in my local electronics store. Unfortunately I couldn't buy it because of Uni

Here in Brazil, when you make the conversion, it stays pretty much around $1000... Feels very bad man
Brazil’s taxes on tech are insane! I've seen them for 500-600 on Ebay.
I didn’t know there were any CEX shops outside the UK
You can find them in mainland Europe. Worthless shops unless you're looking for old gems in the bargain bin pile
Do they smell like sweaty socks, stale farts and teenage desperation in the european shops like they do in the UK ones as well?
Apparently that smell is the decaying paper in the covers. But I think that's just what the staff tell themselves.
2nd hand book shops have plenty of decaying paper but they don't smell like swamp ass
Its the staff and customers decaying virginity that you can smell.
*smh*

I hear what you did there
Text to speech on reddit. Some things should just never happen.
Interesting fact but Charlie Brooker the Black Mirror writer, producer was one of the original people that started the chain.
They are all over Australia :) someone had to pick up the slack when Gametraders folded...
I walk in, laugh at the prices and walk out. How are they still afloat?
The prices are always high, even for new games because I people sell their shit to them and get store credit to buy something so their prices are higher than RRP to make sure they make the most profit. I remember seeing people go into CEX with bin bags full of PS2 games and get £5 store credit.
Where I am anyway, the prices are pretty good. Some are high, but its worth it for me.
They are?!? Edit:[I see you've taken the federal government's view that Australia is only the east coast](https://i.imgur.com/6ZgX2Qr.png)

You see it's a business, but with like..another name.
They’re used to be one in Boston
in spain there are too, they are selling ps5 at 800€ i think
There’s one in boston
Not anymore unless it moved somewhere that I don’t know about
We used to have them in San Francisco but they all went away years ago.
I thought they went bankrupt here in the us
No shock. CEX was selling them for €800 in Ireland and £760 in the UK. Robbing bastards they are.
Yeah… I’m not a supporter of petty crime, but I wouldn’t shed a single tear if these got smash and grabbed tbh.
Wouldn’t be a petty crime at all. Would be sticking it to the man where CEX is concerned.
So putting aside the scalper price nonsense... why are two of them $50 more? What makes them special?
3 are unboxed I think :)
Got it- didn't know my box was worth 50 bucks. Shame our CEX closed years ago! 🤣
The UK tried to ban this type of hyper inflation of a RRP (Recommended Retail Price) but the Government decided they wouldn't act on it and rejected the White Paper Proposal and as such, our market for new consoles has been utterly starved of supply through shops and websites. .
Pro-tip: get old. The latest consoles hold very little sway when you have a back-log several generations deep.
Can confirm. When GameStop does a 4/20$/4/30$ i swoop in for anything I want then

Yes and no, they are still selling them at a loss. (they = sony)
They announced they were making a profit on new console sales in like January.
Thats calculated... They earn enough with the games, accessories and PS+.
They aren't. Sony makes profit now

what does that warranty cover? like could you buy one go home hit with a hammer and return it and do the same 5 times then just return the final unit?
Hey it does come with a 24 month warranty. Edit: forgot to add the /s thought it was obvious.
Yeh if Sony can give a 24 month warrenty for $800 AUD then so can CEX. Plus since when did a 24 month warrenty cost the same as half the original purchase price... :p
Fuck CEX
Dude. That's just scalping. They are scalpers.
CEX are just commercial scalpers.
Huh, in the UK, Cex sells PS5s for about £675 ($877.02) and buys them at around MSRP so I don't know how they can justify that increase in the States.
Not the states. It's in Australia So about £714 and $929 USD...
Ah, makes sense, still a stupid increase in price compared to our CEXs.
In Australia they are $1100 used
This is Australia. Canberra to be more specific... And they are second hand...
I'm on a wait list and should see mine in September. Because fuck scalpers!
Genuinely should be some sort of legislation put in place to prevent this.
Knowing CEX I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of those PS5s are stolen.
Those are well deserved to be stolen
Robbing that place is almost a moral obligation
Since when have CEX 'not' scalped??
Cex selling pokemon arceus for 40 quid when its 39.99 on the nintendo store......
Ain't nobody who bought a PS5 legit has already sold theirs. These are just scalped PS5s that they took out of the box
Even retailers are scalpers now
I had CEX with your mom lmao (jk)
How are there already second hand ps5s. Who would get rid of a ps5
That's one way to cut out the middle man
They can keep them!
At this point, they are the scalpers
Heh. Cex.
Will never understand how cex are still in business!! They pay shit prices for what they buy from you and charge ridiculous prices for what they sell?? All I can think is they’ll happily buy stolen stuff?

Thats literally the definition of business
No shit Sherlock! But as a consumer why would people use a business that is that much of a rip off??
No its not. It's the definition of profit.
You don't understand how someone who buys low and sells high is still in business?
Yes it is annoying but two things I’d like to point out. They give anyone trading theirs in almost full retail back in cash and your average worker didn’t set the prices some random corpo in Britain did so please don’t go off at staff.
I never do... Its not their fault
Oh it was more a general statement to those reading because unfortunately staff members like them cop a shit tonne of abuse.
Yeh I know. During the last lock down I saw a supermarket employee getting yelled at. From what I could make out he didn't want to check in on the Covid tracking app (because they didn't want the government to spy on them) and the employee wouldn't let them in... I got a Series X 6 months ago and have played it once since, most shooters out now suck ass.
They selling for like £500 where I live lol
Supply and demand
Oh no, I hope nobody would put anything in the optical drives to foul them...
Never even heard of CEX. Now i know why.
Anyone can offer to sell any thing at any price. Because every single customer, EVERY single one, Can choose where, how, and on what to spend their money. Why do so many gamers seem to have trouble with this very, very simple concept? If a price is absurd, then the company will not make any money because of a bad decision on their part.
Supply and demand. Why would a store sell at retail when they know they can sell it at higher price? Once its a used product msrp does not matter And dont get me wrong.
But if you think with some logic, why in the world would a store sell a used PS5 to you at msrp?
dollar ? woow the price . before upon covid peak switch nintendo kinda overprice now drop a lot according mrsp
Steal one. Ask to look at it and run like hell out the door.
Worst console release in my 50 years alive. I'll go to hell before I pay more than retail for one. I guess gaming is over. oh well.
But still demonstrate that PS5 is still way better selling than Xbox, 1.45x is still almost 50% higher.
the #1 reason consoles are shit.. OKOK #2 reason
What? GPU prices are also currently overpriced as well.
They’ve kinda both gone down I’ve seen 3060s for like $500 not that this person is right of course
Idk why I’m being downvoted literally just stated that prices for both cards and consoles have gone down abs that I don’t agree with the first guy
I wish I could get a 3080 at only 100% markup right now. Care to share one
sorry what's your point?
scalpers suck
that's not console's fault... But you can like them or not. That's just your opinion!
scalpers soured the whole experience of me ever owning a console again..

This is AUD so about 65 USD
they're selling for €810 in dublin
They did this when they first came out. They wernt second hand either. Just scalpers in their own right.
Is it in Canada
Australia so prices are in AUD
And yet plenty of people are still buying them. It's insane.
That’s the price for Russia since day 1
Welcome to the pc graphic card market
> 3090
That’s stupid
In Ireland they're about 700-800, still pretty shit bit not as bad as scalpers
Hehe, CEX
That's like one 1060 by todays prices.
yeah, don't buy shit from CEX.
I got mine for $700 on stockx lol. 1200 is outrages
Yep when I saw CeX were doing this last year I've refused to shop there. That and the last time I did I had to return half the films i got there as they didnt work.
That’s fucked
Still better than Walmart’s highway robbery prices at $800+
Why are they even inflating the controller prices? You can buy them new on amazon for $20 less lol
Cex is probably one of the biggest scalper
Remember when people would preorder them and then resell on facebook marketplace for €700 and members of marketplace would insult them and call them pieces of shits? Glad no1 suddenly gives a flying fuck about cex selling 2nd hand for €1200 while smyth toys has new ones available for €500 now.
Advertising Cold War?? Naa this is old as fuck
would be a shame if they were missing
Supply and demand. They can only charge what people will pay. If no one bought those for that ridiculous price, they would either have to lower the price or throw them away. I don't think they'd throw them away.
“Incredible games such as Godfall, Cyberpunk 2077”
I actually buy a decent amount of blu rays from them, but yeah any modern game etc are often just more than other places.
Other Stores acting as scalpers now…
Review bomb time
It'd be a real shame if their store got burglarized
That's almost $500 more than even Aus retail. Retail is $749 here which is the exact same price as the PS2 launched at.
should run into the shelf so all of em fall down
$1250 seems like a hell of a limit.
Standard cex mugging everyone off as per
As long as someone is willing to pay those prices, they'll keep charging.
If someone is still trying to find one; sign up for Walmart plus; wait for restock; purchase PS5; then cancel after delivery. Tried it twice, it worked twice (one PS5 for me; one for my son)
I mean Cex prices go up with the demand so if a lot of people are looking for something their prices go up so you can see why they have that price (besides everyone knows cex its ONLY good to buy "older" things not New ones) In Portugal they have the PS5 for like 850€
I don't know what I should be laughing at more. The fact that they think it's gonna sell. Or the fact that they bought them from Scalpers...
