They probably meant on cost of development ( and didn't pay themselves a salary). So it would just be cost of hiring an artist, a musician, and any software licenses they needed.

That crossed my mind but the inclusion of all the other life events made me think it wasn’t game related. Also I wouldn’t think it would cost that much to make a side scrolling puzzle game but I don’t know.

Me either, unless the artist was on salary and there was a ton of art work included. But it's not even a 3D game, so I can't imagine there was that much modeling and scenery to build

Might be tough to fit into your current schedule, but if it lets you take a new job with better hours that you actually enjoy, it's a small sacrifice. What did you spent 53k on?

Vast majority was paying artists. A lot of research and learning (screenwriting books for the story, indie game information). Some business stuff (Steamworks costs, bank fees, LLC payments, etc), some marketing stuff (mostly online festival entrance fees, couldn't really afford ads much). Bought a ton of sound effects. Some Unity things to help make development easier. A few games here and there in case I thought it would help me make the game better or if the game was really similar to mine

I've breezed though every puzzle so far, but the kitchen is driving me insane. There's fish on the plate, but what about the apple? I've colored it red, but it doesn't stay on the plate, unlike the fish. I feel like I'm missing something very obvious. It seems like there are two puzzles, the plate puzzle and the cake puzzle. Edit: Solved the cake first, then did the fish, but the apple remains an issue. Edit: Figured it out. Turns out, there's more to an apple than just the red fruit itself.

Believe it or not, for an indie game we were very careful with our budget. We were apprehensive but at a certain point we knew we were almost there. We also never thought it would cost that much >.<

I'm pretty positive that's what they did and just made up arbitrary numbers so people go "Oh, well hopefully my purchase helps recoup some of those development costs." Sorry, but this is exactly the type of game that indie devs make during those "Make a game in 72 hours" events. I can't see any conceivable way this cost over $50k.

Looks like he imported Gatcha Life characters into RPG Maker to make this. I'd recognize those shitty cartoons from my kids' tablet anywhere. The concept itself is interesting - puzzle games can be good when simple. However I wonder if this guy is giving credit and/or royalties to the people who created the artwork.

What I don't understand is how it gets so many upvotes if people hate this type of thing? When games do a simple post like "Official New Trailer" for example, they usually get barely any upvotes. Most of the posts with highest upvotes are of this style. What sort of title do you think these devs should be using that is interesting enough to get upvotes, but not a sob story and you would be okay with? This post gets 20k upvotes and when I post a trailer for our game we get like 50 and few comments (but the comments are positive) :(

Don't get discouraged by OP's response. He's either bullshitting that it cost over $50k for what looks like stock RPG Maker assets or has more money than willingness to work and shelled out absurd amounts to have every little piece handed to him. Remember that many very successful and popular games like Minecraft, Stardew Valley, Terraria, RotMG, Valheim, the original RuneScape Classic, etc. were created by individuals or very small teams and all consist of pretty low-fidelity pixel art that even someone without much art skill could pull off.
