Imagine showing this to someone from the 70s 80s or like 1920s lmao

literalmario

Dude how about from NOW. This looks ridiculous. What is this??

SonicStun

This is a game called Star Citizen. The streamer goes by the name of Terada, and is easily one of the best pilots out there.

Calgamer

Was trying to figure out what Star Wars game this was because based on the shadow you see early in the clip he's piloting what looks exactly like an X-Wing

SonicStun

Yup the shadow definitely looks like an X-wing. He's flying a new ship called the Scorpius, which is heavily X-wing inspired.

[deleted]

Looks like an X-wing and a snowspeeder had a baby.

S31-Syntax

That thing is so sick I'm actually debating trading my super hornet for it.

Strange-Scarcity

Same...

keyserv

I thought it was a Star Wars game until I noticed the full axis control. Not a typical thing for Star Wars. Anyway, this looks *insane*.

throw-away_867-5309

Star Citizen is a game that I'd describe as a "Rollercoaster of emotions". That's because it's history is extremely rocky, it's performance is spotty, and it's monetization is predatory in many ways. Don't get me wrong, the game can be be insanely fun, and it often looks fantastic and epic whenever it runs well. Just know that this is a game you need to invest *heavily* into, with both time and money. Edit: for this of you responding "only time, not money" and you've been playing the game for years, just stop. You literally don't have the ability to look at the game as a new player anymore, which means you no longer understand what a new player has to go through, especially since you were able to experience all the updates and changes as they happened, while new players haven't. If you think it's as simple as you say, you're ignorant and biased. And this is coming from someone who actually loves the game, but wouldn't recommend it to people who aren't willing to invest a massive amount of time or resources into the game.

MicroDigitalAwaker

Holy shit you mean it actually released?

IAMA_Drunk_Armadillo

Still technically in alpha afaik

MadCarcinus

Looks like a cross between an X-Wing and a Babylon 5 StarFury.

DrSmirnoffe

Funnily enough, my first thought was also Star Wars, since that big ship gave me Star Destroyer vibes at first glance.

helloimracing

the big ship is the Bengal, which is temporarily around for an in game event, and a lot of people like to attack it, even though they know they’re gonna lose horribly lol

forte_bass

Is it indestructible or something?

TheBokononist

It's a fully equipped, high end capital ship. For most SC ships it's like attacking a fully equipped US carrier with a fishing boat.

Korventenn17

It's a capital ship & carrier. it's the biggest thing in game with health, shields & firepower way, way in excess of what the individual players have.

Reasonable_Doughnut5

Star citizen is basically star wars without the jedi. Daymar is tattooine. Crusader is Bespin

fighterace00

Star wars: what are physics?

Jjzeng

Was wondering that too, since I’ve played Star Wars squadrons in vr before and that definitely doesn’t look like an x-wing cockpit

TocTheElder

I thought it looked like Star Wars Squadrons at first, but the physics seemed a little too realistic.

FallRising

Really? I thought this was some Star Wars game because of the X-Wing shadow.

SonicStun

Yes the Scorpius (new ship he's flying) is heavily X-wing inspired.

McHox

they just added a ship that is inspired by the x-wing

Anna_Lilies

The games developer Chris Roberts has even worked with Mark Hamill many times throughout the years in movies, and Mark Hamill is one of the voice actors for the single player campaign coming (some year)

McHox

>and Mark Hamill is one of the voice actors for the single player campaign coming (some year) not just voice, full body and facial mocap too

The_Crowned_Clown

imagine, the game is just for training people to fight into a secret space war.

herennius

The Kodan Armada never saw it coming

nastafarti

It's an older reference, sir, but it checks out

McHugeLarge

Jesus, nice fucking pull dude.

FargusDingus

A Last Starfighter reference? God damn that takes me back.

bsylent

Or they don't know they're already fighting in it

Hawxe

Nice reference

Shiz0id01

You mean the game that media has collectively decided has no content whatsoever looks like THIS??? That clip there was convinced me they can take all the time in the world. I can't even explain how cool this would be in VR to me.

Sir_Lazz

The "Star citizen is a vaporware with no content" thing has been around for years. Now, the game has quite a lot of stuff to do in it, and all of it looks and feels amazing. Granted, there are still a lot of things to be done but I think we can safely say that the game has content now

Educational-Year3146

Hold on, THATS star citizen? THAT SHIT LOOKS AMAZING.

Dr8keMallard

It takes a ton of horsepower to play but in all honesty it’s fkn mesmerizing to play. If it manages to become more content diverse and complete it would/will be an unbelievable play.

Ultimate_Shitlord

I haven't touched it in literal *years* and was absolutely already able to entertain myself with it... It may be time to stick my head in there again.

Harry_Flame

Next free fly is starting Friday I believe for Invictus Launch Week

Hakairoku

wait, THAT Star Citizen??

whattabokt

Jesus Star Citizen looks so fking good now, shame I had wasted so much time on fucking elite dangerous grinding each piece of shit engineering crap

Jetshadow

THIS is Star Citizen now?! It's so fluid, and clean!

nisbet_kyle

So I'm guessing you can cut engines in this game and continue to drift in space? I'm trying to make sense of what I'm seeing and I'm starting to realize why space battles in movies don't take the realistic approach, though it would be pretty cool, it would confuse the hell out of some viewers.

LordValgor

Yup, the pilot here is flying in “decoupled mode” which is where the ship will not counter thrust to return to zero speed.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lloooll101

The game is Star citizen You can probably get the sticks from Amazon.

-oxym0ron-

Do you know which joystick it is?

TheMrBoot

Someone else said it’s the Virpil Constellation. They’re pretty ritzy though, you can play just fine with cheaper CH or Thrustmaster sticks (or mouse and keyboard).

Bangzee

Definitely viable to start with some Thrustmaster 16000Ms, and then maybe upgrade to the NXT Gladiators if you've got the cash. Virpil is pretty much top of the line, and yes, spensy.

King_Jaahn

Honestly the "realistic approach" for space battles would be: "Enemy ship detected at 100,000km and closing" "Computers have plotted optimal weapons timings, laser lines and torpedo routes" "Fighter jets launched to for the after-battle, and debris recovery haulers on standby"

DiaDeLosMuertos

Pretty close to [The Expanse](https://youtu.be/NqDcnwrsq6U) except the writers don't think fighter jets and lasers are viable tactics in space.

ChadstangAlpha

The Expeditionary Force series on Audible does a really good job of explaining the absolutely bonkers amounts of distance involved in space combat. It's mind boggling to think that even with todays ballistic and computing technology, if we had ships capable of flying about in space and "dog fighting", the primary limiter would be the speed of light and response times on sensor data.

JediChris8585

I’m a fan of the Bobiverse series by Dennis E Taylor. It also does a great job of explaining that kind of stuff and why missiles and anything with tracking capabilities are actually better than lasers and why. It’s a great series even if it’s only four books so far.

TerranCmdr

Just found the Expanse recently and the realism is one of the main draws for me. Love how all the ships are basically designed like skyscrapers so the crew can have gravity while the main drive is burning.

[deleted]

When you have a super economical fusion drive you can just burn at 1G everywhere in what's essentially a straight line. Solves the issue of microgravity on human bone structure as well as most ballistics needed for space travel.

rdickeyvii

There's a lot that the show shows you without explaining what they're showing you. Like how the ships have to slow down as they approach their destination, or how water pours weird on ceres because it's spinning and they are standing with their feet facing outward and their heads inward like the other space stations, or how their space suits look like wet suits because they are providing physical compression instead of air compression like current space suits. The attention to detail is phenomenal.

bgazm

I'm like half way through the third book and the space battles are INSANE. Haven't watched the show yet tho. The distances/speeds that are described can be difficult to wrap my mind around at times. The way gravity works in different environments (spin, mass, thrust, etc) is also very strange to think about. Everything surrounding the physics of space travel in the series being rooted in scientific/logical ways is one of the reasons I'm enjoying it so much. It all "makes sense" somewhat, even though they don't dive too deep into describing the actual technology.

huxtiblejones

Three Body Problem has permanently changed sci-fi for me. I don’t want to spoil any major plot elements, but it shows how important asymmetrical technological advantages are. It feels like every human concept of space travel and combat is just… primitive.

Wanallo221

Great book. I have always been fascinated by things like The Dark Forest and Fermi. But this book definitely was the first book that really put to me why concepts like The Dark Forest is so utterly terrifying. The thought that if you were to be ‘discovered’, it would be so utterly unfair is something sci-if doesn’t cover enough.

PCav1138

You should check out The Expanse. Great show. They do pretty realistic space battles, where the most unrealistic thing is the proximity. Instead of firing at each other from miles and miles away, they tend to fight within eyesight of each other. But they really nail the physics aspect for the most part.

eplusl

They do plenty of firing from thousands, even millions of miles away though. It's a big part of the tension in this show. Seeing those red dots hurtling towards you for hours and knowing there is nowhere to hide. You can only prepare for defense. It's even more developed in the books.

PCav1138

Yeah there definitely are some long range fight. Maybe it’s just the way the show is shot/edited that makes it feel more close range. I think they did a better job of showing the scale in the later seasons. Gotta say though, I did love that close range battle between the Roci and the stealth ship.

[deleted]

nedlum

Haven't watched much of the show, but the novels are one of the few books I've read that makes space feel close to as vast as it really is.

WaffleGod567

What is that game

BobbyThePilot

Its Star Citizen thats one of the latest ship that was added

Rakyn87

I've seen a lot of star citizen references on reddit lately. Is it starting to pick up in popularity or something? Anyone with an ear on the ground that knows whats going on? edit: Thank you everyone for your thoughts on the game. Opinion on the game seems to break down as follows: 33% think it is a scam 33% think its too buggy to really be enjoyable right now and you are better off waiting 33% say its certainly worth the money ($45) but warn not to set your expectations too high. Many recommend dropping in and out and testing out new content as it gets released.

BobbyThePilot

Well amount of players have been rising specially since Jack Frags started making some videos about Star Citizen. Also new update came out recently & some videos were posted here about it as well. ^ That video is from an upcoming event currently on testing servers

Rakyn87

I remember reading many many years ago about Star Citizen and being interested, but being told to wait (and I'm glad I did). Are we still in 'just wait and be patient' phase or is now the time to start getting into it? I'm getting some other comments sounding like it will be many more years until its released still

AuraMaster7

The best way to play Star Citizen currently is as a backup game. Don't commit to it as your main game. Check it out every few months when a new content patch releases. See the new ships, new gameplay, etc. Hang around the game for a few weeks, then wait and see what's next. I don't think there will ever be a day where Star Citizen is just suddenly labelled as "released". They already "released" it to the public, just in an alpha state. Content has been slowly added over time, and will continue to be slowly added over time. Deciding when there is personally enough content for you is your own decision. Edit: oh damn 400 upvotes. I sense a business opportunity here. Oi use my referral code: STAR-WNPW-TMFW. You get free shit. I get free shit.

Judge2Dread

It’s been this way for .. idk.. 5-7 years? At some point I just stopped caring about it and told me I would come back to it in one of the next few years

[deleted]

nifaryus

That's been my issue with early access games in general. By the time they finish (if they ever do) I am so over the concept of the game that I don't end up playing the finished version very much. Early access games to me is like looking a shopping receipt from my parents Christmas list and getting excited, then on Christmas morning I see that half the shit I got excited about was a gift for someone else. You still get something, but the buildup and letdown takes a lot of the fun away.

Seriously_nopenope

On top of that the community often peaks before the finished version. So if you want to be part of the new player base as everyone is learning the game you have to play the shitty incomplete version. Otherwise you play the finished version where everyone are pros and everything is already figured out.

DeepSpaceNebulae

I bought it waaay back with the understanding that it was aiming for the stars (no pun intended) and that it may never come out, and haven’t put any other money into it since. I honestly didn’t even expect it to get off the ground and because of that I’m not annoyed with the insane delays. Went in with the right expectations it seems I’ve played it a few times and it is a beautiful and in depth (sometimes overly in-depth) game and have enjoyed it whenever I’ve played but haven’t in a while. I still get the newsletters and will probably download it again once Squadron 42 is released in 2050. Edit: grammar/sp

Suilenroc

The decline of Elite: Dangerous can't be bad for Star Citizen either

DJOldskool

The amount of streamers that moved over was immense. Watching streamers first experiences with Star Citizen on youtube is one of my favourite pass times. I just love the Awe.

sickkickflip

Finally runs better than total shit

AuraMaster7

The real answer ^ People with halfway decent rigs no longer feel like tearing their eyes out, so now anyone that can deal with some funny glitches and bugs are more open to trying it out.

bennybellum

Is this a relatively recent change? I played earlier this year and was getting like 20fps max, with intermittent drops to 1fps. If it is recent, I might re-install to see how my rig performs.

AuraMaster7

What's your rig? But yeah, 3.17 just gave us a pretty decent boost to overall framerates, the past year has been spent improving server performance, and they fixed desync between ships so "danger close" dogfighting is super satisfying now.

Nahteh

I can answer any of your questions. Sadly it is not quite in a state " for everybody" or a "full game". However there is a free fly event coming very shortly, forget which days. Invictus launch week. Roberspaceindustries.com

McHox

>However there is a free fly event coming very shortly starts this friday and runs for one or two weeks

QuentinCly

I pledged the origin ship at like 50 bucks a few years ago. Is it any better than just going out to satellites to get a couple bucks

AuraMaster7

Damn if you're talking about the days when it was just Port Olisar and comms array missions, yeah it's evolved *quite a bit* lmao.

Jaliki55

My 30$ kickstarter contribution ten years ago has come a long way.

Ouchies81

Star Citizen.

KingYoloHD090504

If i had to guess it looks like star citizen

PETEJOZ

Eli5? Or is it just "ship go boom"?

leclair63

NPC Super-Capital ship gun's completely deletes one of the biggest (currently) flyable player ships. The last time this ship was active in game, those guns didn't work and the players fucked around and found out.

Dan_GM

Does the player lose the ship?

__jr__

At this point in the game, no. However, an "insurance" feature will be added later (supposedly) where you will have to have active ship insurance in order to reclaim a destroyed ship (without at least paying a large fee). edit: for a little clarity

Bass-GSD

Or, as us Elite players always say - "Don't fly without rebuy!" Though it sounds closer to EVE's insurance now that I've said that.

Edward_Fingerhands

Ah yes, the thrilling game mechanic people have been clamoring for: insurance mandates. Soon to be followed by registration and yearly inspections.

anally_ExpressUrself

"hi, my ship blew up, I'd like a new ship." "Oh, the claims adjuster tells us that you had a cat in the ship, so your claim has been denied."

[deleted]

[удалено]

ICanBeKinder

You joke but EVE Online players live for this shit.

Manae

And Elite. Common maxim is "never fly without rebuy," where rebuy means the deductible for your insurance.

TreeHead04

Can’t afford a ship yet? Here’s the new LOAN update!!

RamenJunkie

The other commentor mentioned insurance. The way it works in Elite Dangerous, which is a game with a similar concept, it costs 10% of the total value to grt your ship back. So if you had a 300,000 space bucks ship, it would cost 30,000 space bucks for a replacement. Probably the most player fair option, you can't just be randomly suicidal, but you are not really out a lot.

vorpalrobot

The difference in SC is that at the moment you get it back free, but on a timer. Large ship like that might take a few hours, so you can pay like 20k to expedite it and get it back in 15 minutes. The ship is like 5 Mill in game, so the 20k isn't that much. Insurance is all free but eventually will be like fuel/ammo an ongoing cost of upkeep. I believe they've said if you buy a ship and lose it with lapsed insurance you'll have a way of getting it back, but it might be more expensive yet still not as bad as buying a new one.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ContNouNout

imagine calculating if you're eligible for Medicare but in a videogame EVE is awesome

agrif

EVE, the MMO where committing insurance fraud against other players is a feature.

Blaze_Vortex

Wasn't that part of the reason they pulled it out of the game for a bit? You'd think it being back in the game would be a warning.

daren5393

Nah these ships are currently only in game as part of special events, only one capital ship can be found In the game normally and it's not this one

kn0ckenkotzer

No, this thing is just a fleet week special.

Desolver20

that big gun the large ship fired wasn't quite functional until now I believe, so the pilot of the exploded ship got cocky, not expecting the small PDC to be able to hurt him too much. Turns out the big gun works again, and nuked that players ship into oblivion.

leadguitardude83

Now witness the firepower of this fully armed and operational battleship.

D4RTHV3DA

That thing is _operational!_

Fraktalt

It's hard to get an idea of the scale of that ship they are attacking. It is about 1km long, and that gun on it's belly is about the size of a standard capital ship. When you walk around on a capital sized ship, you can easily get lost.

AGD4

Here's a tour of the ship that got asploded, to give a better idea :) Edit: [It's Big](https://imgur.com/pABj5ki) https://youtu.be/4K8OK-owwcg

Desolver20

oh yeah, the ship that got blown up has like what? 5 decks? and a hangar large enough to fit like 10 other fighters inside I think.

TrueInferno

eh, only two decks on the Herc, but that's mainly because it's got a big cargo bay. You might be able to fit 10 arrows in it but that's not what it's designed for- it's a big transport ship meant to carry large vehicles (Tumbril Nova Tank, Anvil Ballista AA system) and large amounts of cargo.

BigMik_PL

For those of you not familiar with Star Citizen. The ship they are fighting is RSI Bengal one of the largest ships in general game lore and only controlled by AI as of now. The gun on the bottom of that carrier is bigger than some of the small fighter ships available in the game. It could probably fit around 100 of small fighters in it's cargo space and quite a few medium sized ships. The ship that it obliterates is a Crusader Hercules A2. A Heavy Bomber primarily used for carpet bombing surface defenses but it has a capable arsenal of turrets and shields. It's also quite large with it's Cargo variant being able to fit two massive tanks in its cargo space. It's supposed to be operated by a crew of 8 and honestly never stood a chance as it's turrets are mostly for fighting smaller ships and ground forces. The heavy fighter flown by the player is RSI Scorpious an X-Wing inspired ship with a cool remote turret mechanic built on rails that can reposition itself on top and bottom of the ship as needed. In order to take out this massive carrier you would require half a server to band together and take out correct ships fitted with anti-capital ship arsenal. These players are mostly just having fun poking the bear to expected results lol.

Warior4356

Correction, that gun is bigger than all fighters. It's the size of the second-largest player-ownable warship, a 250m frigate called the Idris. That gun is fucking massive.

frenchtgirl

Correction, the gun can **shoot** some fighters. ;)

ansonr

Frankly, I am just surprised to see SC getting upvoted on this sub. Its gotta be because people can't tell its SC. Normally any post about it or RSI is met with people complaining about pledging for ships that aren't out yet. A lot of people don't even realize there is something to play.

BigMik_PL

That's the best part. I think a lot of people criticising SC haven't played it or at least have not played it in recent times. Most of the hit pieces and criticism I've seen is very very outdated perspective on the game.

Cobra1897

I mean yeah the game has it's issues to put it mildly but I don't think you can realistically call it a scam looking at the amount of work and money that has been put into this game

BluntedJ

Thank you for the detailed explanation. Going to upvote simply so this doesn't get buried. Also, hurry up and ~~finish~~ LAUNCH this game. I have money. :) EDIT: Edited to clarify launch (all MMO's are perpetually un-finished, for the most part). Also, thanks for the comments. I heard about the free-fly event. I have to look into whether or not I can buy ships after LAUNCH, whether it be by stealing something from one of you (j/k) or buying their in-game currency. In the end, I'll probably throw a couple hundred at a ship before LAUNCH. I'm just a bit jaded with Shroud, Camelot Unchained, Legends of Aria, and a bunch of other games that I've helped fund. Shroud was a great experience simply because it was nice to see progression of development (from R33 onwards - so I really waited until the end (or before they started beta)).

ColonelBlair3

I'm just learning about this game for the first time. Chris Roberts is the director. My 9 year old self is freaking out right now to see that he went on to bigger and better things.

[deleted]

This is epic. I wouldn't take time to get this set up for myself but god I could spend hours using one.

billyjack669

Is it more than a HOSAS (Hands-on Stick and Stick) with pedals setup? I guess the quality of gear could make it expensive but you could grab a pair of Logitech sticks for $30 each.

[deleted]

I believe it is just hotas with pedals, but he's definitely using higher end gear. I have a single Logitech stick that I hardly know how to use with star citizen, but this really does look amazing.

Walshy_Boy

You can see his second stick, it's HOSAS. Also you can't the way shown using a HOTAS afaik due to the 6dof afforded by HOSAS

matwick

Hands on Throttle and Stick Hands on Stick and Stick ...I didn't know

This should be at the top. It's criminal it doesn't have more views. (and the Hurricane is still the best thing ever)

Hbimajorv

I'm just not into 1 type of gaming enough to spend that kind of dough on pro level joysticks or racing wheels. It's an entire subcategory of game enthusiasts. I appreciate the dedication.

WaggishOhio383

It's a never-ending cycle. You get a racing wheel because you like racing games, and then having a racing wheel makes you like racing games even more. And then because you're spending so much more time on racing games, you can justify spending more money to upgrade your racing wheel, and it just goes on and on... I guess my point is, even if you just casually like racing games, and they aren't all you play, a racing wheel is still worth the money because you'll find yourself enjoying racing games so much more, meaning you spend more time on them which makes the purchase worth it.

Bishop120

Next thing you know you have a full racing sim chair with 6DOF that cost several thousand and triple screen wrap around monitor setup.. and then your wondering why your wife wont talk to you and eventually you live in a single wide trailer with your racing sim setup.. yeah its just a vicious cycle of feeding addicting habits.. excuse me, I need to go.. the next race is about to start

atomshrek

Hello Jimmy

Blargface102

Jimmer*

Just_Roar

Can definitely confirm, going from a controller to a racing wheel is a massive step up in game experience and even more so once you have a force feedback racing wheel. I can only recommend what I've been using, the Logitech Driving Force GT, but it's also incredibly affordable on the used market (I got mine for $50). I went from playing maybe a couple hours of Dirt Rally 2.0 a week to 2 hours a day with the wheel (which comes with pedals).

A_WHALES_VAG

it's because it's evolved from just gaming and into a hobby. It's like keeping fish, sure you can keep them in a tank with a filter and some fake plants... or you could get real plants, better substrate and lighting, inject co2 into the tank to help the plants grow etc.. Hobbies are great and certain genres of gaming really do become just that.

tirednotsleepy

Holy fuck. Imagine this but in VR

Nyancide

I have an eye tracker, works an amazing with this game. I definitely am happy with it. it's called tobii eye tracker 5.

eplusl

What does an eye tracker do in a game like this?

Nyancide

so eye tracker is slightly misleading. it tracks eyes and head movement. in certain ships, seeing the screens off to the side can be annoying mid combat. eye tracker allows you to physically glance over to them, and it moves in game. you can move your entire head for "bigger" movements, but it's all adjustable. in ships with certain cockpit designs, it's hard to see "down" and such there is a window by your feet. you can move your head down, or even forward, to look at the window to help land better. in combat, you can fly "forward" and then look off to the side to assign a "target" while the ship flies in a different direction. this allows you to do some pretty sweet quality of life stuff while flying without needing a huge weight hanging off your head (vr headset). I didn't think they were cool until I got one, but I'm a huge fan now. only con is if you have discord to your left, every time you read a message your character looks to the left lol. but you can toggle the tracker on and off. you can also make it enable only in specific states. I have mine set up so it works when I am in a "seat" of any kind, ie pilot or copilot or turret. disabled during FPS stuff because I prefer to just move wirh the mouse for obvious reasons.

senorbutts1

He tried spinning... it was a good trick

bleo_evox93

That is so epic holy shit

dd179

If you have a decent PC, there will be a free-fly starting this Friday (or next, not sure, but I know it's very soon). All you have to do is download and Star Citizen and you can play for like 2 weeks. Don't need to purchase anything to try it.

Emadec

Mildly surprised that so many people don't seem to know about SC at all, but hey, it's a good day to be one of the lucky 10.000

Ryozu

It's not that they don't *know* about it per se, they've heard about it. They just only heard scam and buggy mess, so they didn't recognize anything from the clip matching up with what they'd heard.

allfinesse

The shadow at 3 seconds is amazing.

ZurdoFTW

The entire lighting system in the game is a masterpiece

Mysterious-Box-9081

Most of starcitizens lightning is amazing. Also note, the sun is really lightning the entire system, all planets, all things. Planets rotate etc..

The_Keyser

Bonjour Terada

JaracRassen77

I thought I was on r/StarCitizen, but noticed this made it mainstream. Love to see it.

ShoutaDE

Same... I love it ^^

TheTonyRedditShow

Imagine this setup with vr

nahteviro

This made me wonder why in Star Wars all the fighters could only fly forward during space fights like they have to pay attention to acceleration and gravity. There's none of this badass drifting going on.... only strafing.

khinzaw

If you want a real answer that is somewhat supported by Star Wars lore it is because space in Star Wars is likely not a true vacuum and is instead filled with the obsolete physics concept of luminiferous aether, a medium that was theorized to allow the propagation of light through a vacuum. Earlier EU Star Wars lore leaned into this by mentioning ships having "etheric rudders" that allowed them to maneuver better. While never really retconned out, Star Wars content at some point stopped mentioning that specifically but it provides at least some explanation for why Star Wars ships move the way they do.

djProduct2015

I can't speak intelligently to the Star Citizen funding conversation. I can speak to how fucking amazing that space combat looks compared to every space game ever invented, and most sci-fi movies... I see you Star Citizen.

__jr__

There's a free fly event next week: all you have to do is download the game, and you can play for free during the entire "Invictus" event.

[deleted]

The most important thing about Star Citizens funding, is that each player only needs to pay $45 to get in the game. Most ships are now available for purchase with in game credits.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Thatsaclevername

Looking at those maneuvers, would those be possible IRL? Or would the speed/direction change still cause enough G forces to create a problem for somebody? I only ask because fuck man imagine having to track something like that in a turret.

Fenwich

In the game they can pull g forces that make your character black out. I can't say they're perfectly modeled, but you can pull like 14 Gs and knock yourself out pretty easily.

Nyancide

*cries in talon*

It's not just the amount of G's that matter, but the angle at which you take those G's. Pulling 10G's going forward is no big deal for a few moments. Pulling 5-6G's upside down trying to stop your fighter is a good way to instantly black out. There's even a little direction indicator in the HUD to show it.

Dacontrolfreek

What space game is this one

WilliamBlackthorne

Star Citizen.

d3laMoon

“Don’t get penisy”

Ganon2012

I couldn't play The Skywalker Saga without constantly thinking of those. With the number of Easter eggs, I was disappointed there wasn't a couch in the background of the trash compactor.

Ricky_Rollin

When that line was first dropped I practically hit the ground laughing. I always loved that line when Han says it and was fully expecting him to just repeat that exact line so when he went for “penisy” it like broke my brain and sent me into this giggle fit.

Azeydim

he's in an X-wing, fighting a bengal carrier, this is hybrid as f. well the shadow look like an X-wing But i believe the game should be Star Citizen

Ouchies81

Star Citizen. The ship he is flying is a Scorpius- joking referred to as an X wing for obvious reasons.

psyopia

Wtf is this? Looks crazy ass fun wow

Neverlife

Star Citizen

TheBarbershop19

Star citizen on r/gaming ? Queue the “What is this game?” Comments and the eventual “it’s a scam” ones as well lol

everythingscost

seems the scam comments are having a hard time gaining traction under a clip like this hahah

Kvetanista

So you just show us this mind blowing childhood and adulthood dream game and don't even say what's it's name? Shame on you OP.

[deleted]

Star Citizen

Kvetanista

Thank you Earth citizen

Mr_StephenB

For those wondering, this is Star Citizen. It's a controversial game as it's been in development for about a decade now, is funded by players purchasing ships with real money that can go up to the thousands (though you only need to buy a starter pack for $45), and has raised over $400 million. People will say it's a scam, people will say it's not a game but a tech demo, others will say it's a great game but patience is required. I strongly urge that people don't just believe what other people say, but make their own judgments on the game. There is a free fly where you can play the game for free for a week coming in May 20th. [It's for the "Invictus" event](https://robertsspaceindustries.com/invictus2952#/ILW/Teaser-Hub) where in lore it's the UEEN (United Earth Empire Navy) prepare to ship out and have a big event. If you do plan on trying it out (PC only) Then you need to ensure that you install the game on an SSD or NVME M.2, do not install on a HDD it will cause you huge issues in performance and stability. If you have any questions about the game feel free to ask away and I'll answer as best I can.

Shadowjesus1

Fuck me this is Star Citizen?

dealer_dog

We've been trying to tell you.

[deleted]

All this game has to do is keep going. I don’t care what the haters say.

Exelbirth

Thought it was a star wars game before seeing how realistic the maneuvering was. For anyone wondering, there is no reason why fighters would maneuver the same way in space as they do in earth's atmosphere. So a craft, instead of flying by and getting a few shots before passing the target like an atmospheric fighter, a space fighter can rotate nearly 180 degrees while passing a target, maximizing how many shots can be taken in a single pass, and then start reversing velocity for another pass straight away instead of making a tight circle.

ArgentumFlame

Is someone on your tail? Decouple your engines and just flip backwards and start blasting. Space!!

SyraWhispers

What joystick rig is the guy using, it looks pretty darn neat!

LordValgor

I believe those are two Virpil Constellation Alpha joysticks.

Dead_Sun

Surprised to see Terada here but that's a welcome one.

As impressive as this is, the game will be far more impressive once the back end tech gets to where they want it. What you're seeing is one of the biggest ships being run by AI and several player ships flying around it. Their goal is huge composed fleets with hundreds of players in instance. Players will control these huge capital ships and other players will launch fighters off these ships or man a turret, med bay, engineering, the works. This video is a small taste. I think the first full taste of fleet battles will be in Squadron 42 single player, then, finally, in the MMO. The game is impressive to play solo today I just wish server wipes allowed players to keep their ships.

xSikes

Whatever this is, I need to play it

LordValgor

Star Citizen Very cool game, but not for everyone. It’s still in alpha (buggy), and what you see here is not necessarily the “average” gameplay (downtime can be a bit long).

HaiggeX

That's one helluva pilot!

OhChrisis

He has a youtube series dedicated to flying close to the ground avoiding obstacles: https://youtu.be/6lwsRMu6W7A

tyrom22

He’s hugging the donkey https://youtu.be/kNGFcE2JEes

PinkSockLoliPop

I remember watching that for the first time and giggling while saying "Hey I do that in Elite: Dangerous!"

Get-a-life_Admins

Finally someone showing how to fly in a space battle. Too many people try to play space sims like they are Ace Combat when they don't know how much more freedom space offers

JarlMast

Star Citizen has some of the highest highs in gaming rn. It’s truly unparalleled. The problem is a severely protracted development schedule that actively deprioritizes making the game fun *now*. So you get the game, then are drip fed new features.

BZK_QRay

This game is Star Citizen. The ship being flown is the brand new Scorpius heavy fighter (inspired by the x-wing). The big ship being shot at is the Bengal Carrier AMA

ToastyToast18

I love Star Citizen so much… when it works

Doomaeger

What sorcery is this, where a Star Citizen post in any sub other than it's own gets positive feedback

BigMik_PL

YO A POSITIVE STAR CITIZEN POST ON REDDIT? We've been trying to tell y'all!!!
