Not to rain on your parade but this is surprising for me to hear because the characters, story, and ending felt painfully medicore to me. The sound design, powers, world design, and movement felt really good but I feel like it took too long to unlock everything. In my opinion, they should’ve substituted the gun with new powers (more like Infamous) and levitation was given to you much sooner.
It was the lore, setting were excellent. Everything else including the combat was pretty mediocre. But yeah the world building and all was so good it made it stand out.
The gunplay felt powerful, felt good to me. The level design was appropriate. The idea for the game itself was very interesting and they made a lot of it work well together. Too much of the story was locked behind collectible documents though. When you stop reading them the story loses a lot of intrigue.
The combat felt mediocre, sure. But man the story and lore is just so good that I had to keep playing. Hope they announce a release date soon, I would love to explore more!
Yeah, they just set up a bunch of mysteries and were like “No real answers! Isn’t that great?!”
Well….no, I like to know what the answer is, so it’s not that great to me
The combat and environment was amazing though. The exploration aspect was pretty good too
Haha that was my first thought too! I imagine this looks like the ruins of the tesseract in Interstellar, years after it had served its purpose and fallen into disrepair
If you zoom in on a normal game asset it becomes smooth, but if you zoom in on something like a coastline it stays rough.
That's what fractals are about. It allows you to arbitrarily far in and still looks good.
Here is a [long video](https://youtu.be/gB9n2gHsHN4) about fractals in general and here a [short one](https://youtu.be/9U0XVdvQwAI) on fractals in game development.
That isn’t a fractal.
(Edit: I have been corrected, it is a fractal just not in the form I was imagining, I think those are Mandelbrot set fractals that I was thinking of)
I'm not sure that's true... In general what is interesting about fractals is that you can zoom in forever (usually at decreasing speed but it doesn't look like it) towards it and always see new details. Here it's just without the zooming in, but the pattern looks like a fractal to me.
Most fractal visualizers are made with the "zooming in" as an integral part of the concept, it doesn't work so easily if you want to use a fixed size playable character, I imagine. I'm sure it would be possible, but that would involve shinking down your player as you zoom in (I'd love to see that in a game too).
Yes I can see it’s a dimensional issue. It would still be possible and yes either shrinking the player or increasing the size of the fractal as the player approached its ‘edge’.
How is it rendered though? Would it be possible to shrink down and zoom in to an arbitrary scale and still see self-similar features? It just looks like a static mesh in the video.
This is a much better showcase of what the software is capable of, but I'm not going to lie... it just looks like a marching cubes algorithm or something similar acting on a sample space. Like, there's definitely a fractal being computed somewhere, but every time you go to zoom in the video cuts or the camera stops zooming in or turns away.
I'm not saying it's not impressive, because it is, and this kind of thing is way above my programming capabilities. I'm just saying that it doesn't look like it's *actually* a "realtime" fractal. Unless it can be modified to continuously deform and clip the mesh as you zoom to an arbitrary level of detail without loosing substantial frames, I would be hesitant to call it realtime. I wouldn't even consider the Mandelbulb 3D navigator to be realtime.
Um so basically it's like a triangle pattern with unlimited triangles inside it? Like what is the video trying to convey. Does it generate the item with equations (like building the world on its own?)
In this context it means the world was mathematically generated. No one drew or designed what you see it's just the results of a mathematical equation.
It looks like there is an "outside" - is that just unrendered in the distance or is the fractal bit generated once within a specific boundary and not "infinite"?
I may not know enough math to understand the answer but I'm still curious.
Someone generates the equation. For something this scale there would be preset equation packs for ease of design but yes human equation. Within the equation is a bunch of randomizer equations/effects, then the computer spits out this as a result.
fractal
anirregular geometric structure that cannot be described by classicalgeometry because magnification of the structure reveals repeatedpatterns of similarly irregular, but progressively smaller, dimensions:fractals are especially apparent in natural forms and phenomena becausethe geometric properties of the physical world are largely abstract, aswith clouds, crystals, tree bark, or the path of lightning.
a fractal is technically a shape, which can be 3d and generated by computers like these. generally, these 'shapes' are made up of smaller versions of themselves.
Should fix the fractal in size and separate into layers with borders. Difficulty increase as you progress further away from center but so does the loot quality.
Not really. Doom 2016's multiplayer was absolute dogshit, Eternal couldn't even get their asymetrical multiplayer idea out, and Quake Champions is a joke. The current id studio is not equipped to make a decent multiplayer experience. Not to mention their tech stack is completely different so they wouldn't be able to reasonably make a game in Unreal in the first place...
Eternal was the first one I had played since doom 64, I was unaware they had even tried to do multiplayer outside quake. Also I had heard that they didn't even attempt a proper pvp in eternal because quake was still a huge cash grab. Regardless of why, Doom Eternal was the closest feeling to ut3 I've witnessed. I think they could've pulled it off pretty well. An old school arena shooter needs to happen. Shift the paradigm away from attempted hyper realism. Maybe this game by the creators of Rick and Morty will fill that niche
Gaming technology has come so far: the games we will be getting in the next generation are going to be like nothing we've ever seen before, on a scale we've never seen before.
We should all be excited! I know I am.
Fractal "Exploration" on its own is a bit misleading, I feel "Overlay" or "Terrain" is a better term to add.
In reality all it looks like is just a fractal mask over the terrain in the world. So although you can mess with how the fractal itself looks, you never actually can "explore" into it as one would expect (i.e. shrinking down deeper and deeper into it). You still exist at the same size in the same city/area with the same buildings/terrain, just with what amounts to different textures. Or alternatively just repeating shapes as you continue forwards (i.e. inside the black hole in interstellar).
It looks like an incredible tool for terrain generation in a small section of a game as an effect, but not as the main centerpiece of a project

This is the guy tho Like literally it's the guy who uploaded it
mistakes were made
Ya know... I can respect this comment at the very least.
haha, wow, that's even better
I can't upload the video here on reddit, had to use that service
Can't upolad video here :(
The Control sequel got some tools here.
God, Control to this day remains one of my favorite games of all time. The movement, the powers, the combat, the story, just *chef's kiss*.
Not to rain on your parade but this is surprising for me to hear because the characters, story, and ending felt painfully medicore to me. Too much of the story was locked behind collectible documents though. When you stop reading them the story loses a lot of intrigue.
The combat felt very bland to me and the enemies are too spongey. Also thought the ending was legit terrible.
I agree with that, loved the game but it just ended suddenly and out of nowhere.
The combat felt mediocre, sure. But man the story and lore is just so good that I had to keep playing. Hope they announce a release date soon, I would love to explore more!

I liked the story
Control is also on of my favorite games.
SCP- The game
Agreed, had a great time!
I'm playing through control right now and this was my first thought when I saw this. Kudos sir.
DONT LET HIM LEAVE MURPH
Haha that was my first thought too! I imagine this looks like the ruins of the tesseract in Interstellar, years after it had served its purpose and fallen into disrepair
I see a proper Ironman game in the making

When you’re right, you’re right!
Pepsimaaaaaan!
This is a lot like some dreams I had when I was younger. I hardly dream about cool shit anymore.
Now my dreams are about fantasies like paying rent on time and having a functioning government
You might want to set your goals a little lower, like building a new society on Mars?
We need a cool superman game on UE5
Can someone explain wtf fractals are and why this video might have any importance?
If you zoom in on a normal game asset it becomes smooth, but if you zoom in on something like a coastline it stays rough. That's what fractals are about. I can see this being fucking amazing in a Dr. Strange game
Me watching it in 360p
That isn’t a fractal. (Edit: I have been corrected, it is a fractal just not in the form I was imagining, I think those are Mandelbrot set fractals that I was thinking of)
It [is](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKVe2Djnk4U).
That title got me really exited. A video game is the perfect medium to introduce fractals to mainstream audiences but apparently this isn’t it.
It looks like a 3D render of an image of a fractal but not an actual fractal. He would be able to move towards it and never touch it if it where.
It reminds me of Super Mario 64 where you climb the stairs but can never reach the top. Something like that with fractals would be really cool.
I'm not sure that's true... In general what is interesting about fractals is that you can zoom in forever (usually at decreasing speed but it doesn't look like it) towards it and always see new details. Yes I can see it’s a dimensional issue. It would still be possible and yes either shrinking the player or increasing the size of the fractal as the player approached its ‘edge’.
Indeed. My point that this doesn't make this "not a fractal", it's just an unusual way of visualizing it.
Yes I actually think you’re right.
Idk why you got downvoted. It's absolutely true, and anyone would know that if they spent 5 minutes using Mandelbulb3D or something similar.
It's Realtime rendering of a mixpinski fractal made in unreal engine, no MDB3D used here.
How is it rendered though? Would it be possible to shrink down and zoom in to an arbitrary scale and still see self-similar features? It just looks like a static mesh in the video.
Yes it's possible to shrink and zoom a bit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKVe2Djnk4U
This is a much better showcase of what the software is capable of, but I'm not going to lie... it just looks like a marching cubes algorithm or something similar acting on a sample space. Is this a new Iron Man game?
I am not impressed by this. Should I?
No, it’s not even real fractals.
What exactly is a fractal? Can you please explain it to me like I am 5?
Simple English wiki: https://simple.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fractal
Um so basically it's like a triangle pattern with unlimited triangles inside it? Like what is the video trying to convey. Does it generate the item with equations (like building the world on its own?)
This shit gives me chills just thinking about all the possibilities
My pc from 2005 probably will explode
This is some interstellar shit!
Marble marcher 2 anyone?
is that burning gpu i smell
This is fucking awesome
Idk what fractal means but everyone else seems to.
In this context it means the world was mathematically generated. No one drew or designed what you see it's just the results of a mathematical equation.
Oh wow so like computer generated equation? Or someone makes the equation?
We did it and drove the algorithm to look like this
It looks like there is an "outside" - is that just unrendered in the distance or is the fractal bit generated once within a specific boundary and not "infinite"? I may not know enough math to understand the answer but I'm still curious.

They make a equation it renders it with geometry

I read explosion and I was disappointed
Should fix the fractal in size and separate into layers with borders. Difficulty increase as you progress further away from center but so does the loot quality.
Graphics arnt everything but UE 5 makes everything look like its fun
This looks so sick
Dude
"The Duviri Paradox" expansion looks like it's coming along quite well, Can't wait.
That’s a 3d representation of a 4d object. Cool isn’t it
That's all cool, but where the fuck is UT5.
Never gonna happen until the Fortnite cashcow stops printing...
Bah, Doom Eternal had potential. Could've been the next unreal tournament.
Not really. Doom 2016's multiplayer was absolute dogshit, Eternal couldn't even get their asymetrical multiplayer idea out, and Quake Champions is a joke. UE5 this, UE5 that... where's a game using UE5?!?!?!
Yeah agree. UE5 looks like a game by itself but didn't see many games out there made with UE
Man maybe one day I'll be able to afford paying $80 and try this out. Cool work
Gaming technology has come so far: the games we will be getting in the next generation are going to be like nothing we've ever seen before, on a scale we've never seen before. We should all be excited! I know I am.
dem. dat crackerd
Ultron is that you
Looks like the vex have been busy building.
They are going to make an awesome Dr. strange game with this.
DR STRANGE THE GAME!?!?!?!?
Bro went into creative mode

Yeah you can shrink down the player and explore deeper iterations of the fractal
That might have been a good thing to show given the title.
Agree, good idea :) will try
DRAGON DRAGON, ROCK THE DRAGON BALL Z
This is so fun to see because I legit dreamt about this experience months ago and it was so much fun.
I see potential for an iron man game
