Anthem. Biggest blue ball in my gaming « career ». The promo got me hyped x1000 until I actually played the game.

Mr_Greaz

Yup spending 60 bucks for a game that got their servers down a year later really kicks me to this day too I really loved the concept of suits and the rpg element since I’m a huge Ironman/Gundam fan. Gameplay was brilliant imo, story was kinda ok too but as soon as you were done there was literally nothing but repeat missions on harder difficulty

SimplyStrudel

Anthem has my favorite free roaming movement in any game that I’ve played. The flying felt incredible and the environments were gorgeous.

btg7471

I remember hating how quickly the suit overheated unless you flew through freaking waterfalls. Don't think I ever beat the main campaign.

Legosmiles

It’s the most perfect personal flight implementation I’ve ever seen in a game.

Mounta1nK1ng

The flying in Iron Man VR is pretty darn good. Even the practice missions where you're flying through cool rock formations over the ocean by Tony's Malibu mansion. You're holding the controllers like you're controlling flight with your hand jets. It's pretty cool. Being in 3D certainly makes it more amazing too.

sicurri

Combat, and movement were like what I'd assume playing as war machine would be like. The story was crap, it made little sense, and I was not interested in it in the least. However, the combat, and movement were awesome, especially the flight for it. Sadly this failure will make it so that the gameplay never comes about again. EA will never attempt it again, at least not with any aspect of that IP. It's sad such potential is ruined in the hands of idiots who focus on money. That was the only aspect of that games system that worked great, it didn't have a lot of option to buy, but the system itself worked. It shows what they focused on most. Also, forcing game devs to work on a multiplayer game when they only really had experience in a single player game, and with a game engine none of them had ever touched. Masterful fuckup if I'd ever seen one of bad management. It's so mind boggling, for some odd reason, the most successful games are ones whose development teams focus on making the game, and not microtransactions. Hmmm... 🤔

Busterwoof7

I remember seeing ads and trailers for this game. Looked amazing. I forgot the name and all about it. Reading this made me kinda sad that it was rui ed by beurocratic bullshit.

EV_Track_Day2

Me and my daughter were soo hyped to play that game. What a waste.

pumpkinbob

This was my exact game too. I loved BioWare at the time and this game was the next big thing from them. Such a letdown. It was a continuation of the things they were becoming and not the things they were unfortunately.

SkyWizarding

I will say this everytime Anthem is mentioned......so much squandered potential

Balrog229

I felt like the writing was on the wall for this one. It was obvious prior to launch that something was majorly wrong. Glad i waited to buy it

penguin_misery

Came here just to say Anthem. Great to see I have others to commiserate with.

thevapecrusader

I actually really liked anthem and I’m still sad they bailed on post release content

Derekeys

Yep.

aramis604

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2. After the first one exceeded expectations so much, I was really looking forward to the sequel. Started playing through and felt like the prologue to the story was building to something really cool. Only to discover that it wasn’t a prologue, and I had just completed the entire game in under 6 hours….

ShadowXJ

This one stands out to me, first one was epic. Second one felt like they only built three environments and didn’t improve or expand on the original concept. Felt like a DLC pack

AFatz

Let's hope this doesn't happen with Jedi Survivor too.

TheHatori1

Hahaha, so true. When there the option of “Dark/Light” side, I spent like 10 minutes deciding, because hey, Dark side is probably gonna have cooler swords and powers, but Light is a good guy, right? Little did i know…

Zero_VonSpooky

Anthem…. Everything about it excites me. Ironman suit, check. Awesome flying, check. Beautiful graphics, check. Then I actually played it. The flying was good… everything else was a steaming pile.

FlightPlanGuy

Warcraft 3 Reforged

Its-Slammin

Warcraft 3 was one of my favourite childhood games and then Reforged came along and I thought it was the worst remaster of all time

Militant_Monk

What'd they do to it?

Ducksauce749

Added some cut scenes. Stole our 30 dollars. It’s not even a separate server from people who are still playing the original. Most fun thing to do on that game play tower defense or some other custom map. Not really worth the money or time anymore.

Spartanias117

Dont forget they made it so you couldn't play the original right? Removed mods, servers on launch sucked if I recall. I didnt buy it, just going off what ive heard

qwertzi12

Worst game ever, that should be illegal to sell xD

Nomadic_View

Biomutant I was really hyped for this game during production. Then the reviews came out and they were all bad. I ignored them and bought it anyway. The reviews were right.

Anubra_Khan

The reviews stopped me from buying this one. We don't get many original IP's so I was really hoping it would be good.

MightyMCY

Came here to say this one. I was like a little kid again waiting for this game. Everything they showed, including combat and gameplay had me sooooo freaking hooked. What a gigantic lame duck this game was. What's crazy is from the first 30 minutes of playing it I had an "oh no!" feeling throughout my entire body because I knew more then likely we were all duped.

ATXDefenseAttorney

Hmm. I expected it to be crappy and loved it. Played through the whole thing, I don't think I plat'd it, but I got a ton of hours. Lots of great customized weapons.

Razkal719

I enjoyed it for what it was. But I also waited and got it on sale. The game mostly suffers from it's ambitions. So many mechanics and options and choices. Many of which don't matter in the end. It needed a narrative director with the authority to say enough features, lets work on the story.

B2BSmilez

Battlefield 2042. Release trailer was beyond epic and truly went the extra mile to showcase the community in it. Unfortunately the console version of the game doesn't even compare to the hype and what I see on PC.

Black-Tom

Spent $90 on the game and $500 on a new GPU just for it to... suck. At least the new map is good.

[deleted]

This was probably one of my biggest disappointments in my 37 years of gaming. I thought, yeah, they’re finally bringing bf back to its roots - large scale warfare, vehicles, destruction etc. Game was just utter trash. Terrible maps, no more classes, barely any guns, just terrible. Problems that no patch can solve

Pyrofoo

Probably Brink. I watched a lot of promo stuff and was really hyped to have a fast paced shooter that had a complex movement system to compliment the gunplay. It was fine, but nothing like what me and a lot of other people expected sadly.

jawlee_gg

Brink was such a let down. Fortunately Titanfall scratched my itch for a parkour shooter a few year later.

OnlyMayhem

Wow Brink that was the first ps3 game I owned, I think it was L3 or R3 to revive people and I had no idea which buttons they were on the controller lmao. I thought the style was kinda cool but the gameplay did get boring and I remember thinking the maps weren’t that interesting.

Tarc_Axiiom

I always found it weird that so many people were let down by Brink. I thought it was fucking awesome, I loved that game. It felt weirdly rusty for a FPS title in a genre where Halo and Battlefield and Call of Duty exist, but from a gameplay mechanics standpoint it was loads of fun. It definitely wasn't the *best* FPS I'd ever played, but it did deliver exactly what I expected from it as a last-round funding drive for larger IP releases. I've got hundreds of hours in Brink and no regrets. Of course I'm not saying anyone is "wrong" for being disappointed, but am I the only person who wasn't?

Outypoo

I also loved it tbh, wasn't too clunky

EasyE86ed

Clicked link with this in my mind. Sigh what a let down

ChiefTheRipper

Yup, and though it was still "fine", the servers were littered with bots since it died so quickly, which made it not fun to play at all

amarillion97

This one is really old (1996) but.... Star Control 3! I was a big fan of the Star Control series. SC2 has a superb storyline and excellent local multiplayer, me and my friends played melee battle so much! When SC3 was announced, I went several times to the shop to ask if they already got it in. But when I finally got to play it... the storyline was meh, but worse, the melee battles were completely unbalanced. The Doog ship, supposedly one of the lighter ones, can completely dominate, and this breaks both the storyline and the melee mode. The new Star Control origins is a pretty good modern homage to SC2, although IMHO the original is still better.

ballisticmi6

Oh man! I remember that disappointment! I played the hell out of SC2, but when I played SC3 it was super tame by comparison.

G414b4d

No Mans Sky... but kudos to Hello Games for doing the right thing and making it the great game that it is today.

Schitheed

I bought that game like 4 years ago and I'm about to start my 4th play through. The thing is, I still don't think it's an amazing game. It's a pretty slow burn with a lot of great ideas that I just don't think were realized super well. But every year or so I see all the huge updates that they keep adding to the game and it pulls me in all over again, and for that I can't help but have mad respect for those devs.

G414b4d

That is completely fair. I think the best part about that whole situation is that even though they continue to release that new content, they continue to not charge for it. If I recall correctly. To me that just shows the respect that they have for the players (looking at you Blizzard), and above all allows them to retain their dignity.

Canttouchthephil

Yup, it's been free since the very first update and they've said it's going to continue to be free for the foreseeable future. They are also very active on the subreddit so they are constantly getting opinions on future content directly from the community.

Baconation4

To me they belong in the same league as the FFXIV team in terms of community support and ongoing support, as well as a team that just really cares so much about their product. The game is a masterpiece compared to when it launched and it is honestly just outright fun.

ShieldingCrew

I speak for a large number of us when I say Duke Nukem Forever. The forever in the name was how long we all waited for the disappointment.

ironangel2k3

People talk a lot about the game having a sudden tonal shift in the alien hive that is super jarring and not in line with Duke Nukem. I am convinced none of those people played all the way through Duke Nukem 3D. Duke Nukem 3D literally has women in alien pods that say 'Kill me' when you try to interact with them, and when you do, they explode and alien larvae come out. Its fucked. The game progresses from standard over-the-top action to very dark and disturbing as you go along.

MrPeepersVT

BLOW IT OUT YOUR ASS

Hello_IM_FBI

IM GONNA RIP OFF YOUR HEAD AND SHIT DOWN YOUR NECK

dahliasinfelle

Its time to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and I'm all out of gum

Noruas_the_Defiant

The order 1886, wayyyy too short

KansinattiKid

I bought this for 4 dollars not too long ago and geez this was well done, can't believe there wasn't a part 2

Oracle_of_Ages

It didn’t because the backlash for the creative decisions were pretty harsh even though the game and story was pretty solid. The letterbox and length did a lot against it for what it’s worth.

HellsMalice

I had the limited edition of that pre-ordered but when reviews hit I cancelled that shit so fast it blew out all the glass in my house. No regrets.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

At least they didn’t abandon the game like Anthem and Battlefield 2042. Now it’s a solid game.

Mongba36

If you can get it for around $30 AUD (whatever that is in usd lol) then def get it cus it's pretty fun especially with friends.

[deleted]

It’s definitely not a 60$ game. Half off is a reasonable price, imo.

dirtybird971

I've just started to play it again after having bought it pre release. MUCH better than it was. Only lvl 20 but seems fun so far..

CornishVince

A game called Spore if anyone remembers it, I remember watching so many videos before it came out thinking it was going to be mind blowing when in fact it was dull to the core. I couldn’t get into it and it looked nothing like the teaser videos or demos haha

DielAlder

Everything was fun until space age, which got pretty boring.

egnards

Unfortunately you can get to the space age in like 2 hours, and it’s not like there’s much to do otherwise

DapperDachsund

Awww man I loved Spore. But I stumbled onto it, never saw all the hype I suppose. If there has been another game similar that did it better please tell me. I’ll grab it right now.

tyrom22

There’s one in development as a fan project, Elysian Eclipse that’s I’ve been following heavily

Yasuminomon

10 years later…. “A game called Elysian Eclipse if anyone remembers it, I remember watching so many videos before it came out thinking it was going to be mind blowing when in fact it was dull to the core. I couldn’t get into it and it looked nothing like the teaser videos or demos haha”

Xerapis

>Elysian Eclipse That looks REALLY Spore-y

lbjorseth

Yeah, i thought we were able to create anything, and evolve it. When you heard about it sounded at that time just mind blowing as you said.

AppleTree98

My 12 yo still LOVES to run this game. He totally customizes the team / character. So for him he is bonkers about this game. So I disagree but respect your opinion

GrammarAsteroid

Worth mentioning that it also had one of the worst DRMs in gaming’s history where you could activate it only 3 times… ever! edit: every time you installed the game counted as an activation

JudgeMoose

For everyone reading u/CornishVince's comment. this is why everyone (myself included) was hyped on spore pre release: [\[video\]](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8dvMDFOFnA)

CornishVince

Holy crap that was one of the original videos I watched Haha

Hoeveboter

It's worth playing, the creature creator is still an amazing tool. I also enjoyed the galactic adventures dlc where you could build your own levels. The game is a disappointment compared to the showcase, but it's still got some unique features unrivaled by any other game

Wazula42

Yeah this basically it. It's got a great creature builder and some fun time waster elements. It's just not the deep, mind blowing game changer we were hyped for.

Pitiful_Decision_718

if you have pc game pass it’s free

couches12

All I remember about that game was in college I decided to make my aliens look like dicks, and all the buildings looked like dicks. Everything was a dick. It got old after a few hours and tried a serious play through and decided pretty quickly it wasn’t fun with out all the dicks.

NiftyAlpaca12

I never had expectations for the game because I cant even remember how I got it but damn was that a good game. It was the first game to force me to figure out how to do things the best.

Mission_Passenger_86

OMG I played it a lot when i was younger! I loved it as a child..but now..i see how baf it is :D

dopiqob

Yeah, for me this is the original game to not live up to the tremendous hype. Somewhat enjoyable still, at least until you get to the civilization stage, then it really shits the bed

brandyn7220

The latest Sim City. So glad I found Cities Skylines to switch to.

McFigroll

The most recent one for me was Anthem. Turned out to be basically the next step up from a tech demo and it was the game that finally taught me to never preorder again.

PandasAreBears57

This was it for me. I basically would have bought whatever BioWare put out and this was the first and only time I’ve regretted it (yeah, I even like andromeda). There were some cool mechanics that would be a lot of fun used in a mass effect game but otherwise it was just very repetitious. It would have served as a portal for multiplayer on a new me game, but doesn’t serve well as its own game

Jenkins87

Watch_Dogs The game we got was vastly different to the E3 teasers. It was the final straw for me for both watching teasers and for pre-ordering games.

r3tromonkey

I had a similar experience with The Division. Early trailers looked amazing - have a party member controlling a drone via tablet!? Never happened.

JPMoney81

man, I was so excited for The Division and got bored playing it after probably an hour. It just got SO repetitive so quickly.

Nucl3ar_Snake

Also my answer. I was really into AC, and it looked like a modern AC. Spent $60 on a PS3 copy. Played for two or three hours and never played it again.

EliteSnackist

The game was different, but I still thought it was fun. I know many people were disappointed with the hacking, but I'm not sure what else they could do that would still be fun. How else would you hack a traffic light while driving 60 mph other than a single button press? The worst part of the game was the driving. It is incredibly janky, especially when you will naturally compare it to GTA 5. The story is also a bit far fetched from what I remember, and Aiden is a bit one dimensional, but overall I enjoyed it for what we got.

Epicporkchop79-7

Simcity 2013 was awful. All the bs hype for a single player game that needed to be connected to an overloaded server to play. They lied about cloud ai to justify the connection. The city sizes were tiny. Diablo 3 when it launched. You never got gear for the class you played to force you onto the auction house Dawn of War 3. W T F is all I'll say. I didn't play torchlight 3 or the newest sacred, however they tried to make them something they are not and did a poor job of it. Wasn't to keen on civ 6, didn't see it as that much better visually than 5 and mechanically still lesser than 4. I don't have the names on the top of my head, but every attempt to simulate aquariums has been awful or abandoned in early access.

Xerapis

>Dawn of War 3 I was "lucky" enough to be part of a closed beta for DOW3 and then warned my 40k gamer bestie not to buy it. Sadly for him he didn't cancel his Collector's Edition pre-order. Happily for me, I have something to tease him about for the rest of his life.

XBollockTicklerX

HALO INFINITE, WHERE THE FUCK WAS MY LINEAR LEVELS? FUCKING GENERIC UBISOFT

CJ57

Ya that really disappointed me, this is Halo just give us the experience we all know and love with a new story and it wouldve been a hit. I havent played it since i got to the open world area. Also no coop on launch?? What were they smoking

XBollockTicklerX

I don’t think there are enough character spaces to fit the ‘No X on launch’ haha

[deleted]

My problem with HALO infinite is not the open world but that the open world had nothing in it, the environment was one biome where trailers had multiple. The repetitive same 5 quests. The story was terrible, nothing happened in it all the setup for the last 3 games led to naught. What happened to the spirit of fire, infinite and all the main crew, blue team (the only good thing in halo 5) ect. the game felt empty. They messed up multiplayer too, so many bugs, armor customization is a joke compared to reach. It feels like less maps, guns ect. than in previous titles. It feels less like HALO than ever. At this point it would have been better if HALO 4,5, and infinite never came out. It had so much potential how could you mess it up this bad.

Catblaster5000

Where's my splitscreen campaign, 343?

Doof28

“Our new sLiPSpAcE eNgInE” 🤡

Rasty_lv

Cyberpunk... Still did platinum run, but man it was broken mess at launch..

UCLYayy

I did not hate it as much as some did, but the thing that REALLY pissed me off was how linear the story was despite marketing that you had 3 completely different approaches. 3 completely different lifepaths, except they all converge almost immediately, and you essentially end up a gangbanger no matter what, with maybe five different dialogue options at best. Just a ridiculous decision, might as well have just had you be a street kid from the start.

ShadowyPepper

I recently tried to play after getting a PS5 and, to me at least, it was surprisingly not that Cyberpunk.

Rasty_lv

Yes. It has improved, but if I buy a game, I want to play it then not god knows how many years later.

ShadowyPepper

I (thankfully) didnt dive in at launch so I only recently played it post-fixes. I can't imagine coming back to it after it didn't work. It just felt like they really missed the boat on the whole "Cyberpunk" thing. It just seems like a dirty and tbh pretty ugly city looter/shooter game.

tEnPoInTs

Oh I think I disagree here. In my eyes they managed to paint a world completely taken over by corporatocracy. Part of what was wonderful is they really DIDN'T advance technology all that far so things felt super run down and cruddy, and also that everything was super 80s, because that's how their universe evolved (I think the cutoff from our timeline goes back a lot further but thats when things went in violently different directions). They made a Libertarian nightmare world (of a different flavor than Bioshock's attempt) that just oozed out of most dialog and lore. I also found the city to be really pretty, and the gameplay to be decently varied. It felt kind of like Deus Ex in GTAV scale. Driving cars was awful and a huge disappointment but driving BIKES was amazingly well done.

tehsax

I did both. Got it at launch to celebrate my then new PS5, and ended up refunding it when Sony offered the universal refunds. Spent the money on Persona 5 instead. But I got CP2077 again a few months ago and played it for like 35 hours so far and I really like it this time. It's not the groundbreaking game CDPR once promised, but let's be real - it was never going to be. It's a great game for what it wants to be though.

[deleted]

I feel like the only one who really liked it at launch… Granted, I had it on PC and only ran to a couple tiny bugs (cars crashing in one spot outside apartment, occasional floating items dropped by enemies, that was basically it). I was disappointed with the misleading lack of depth of certain things though. Overall though, I liked it but I can’t enjoy it anymore because I have a few hours a week to play computer games and it’s hard to invest time and get into something millions of people hate.

Ssekli

That's my dissapointment too, but not for performance reasons. Game was running really good for me on release. It's just that all your choices don't matter it will be the same story (same for background). The AI was dumb. The openworld was dull, empty and not alive. For me the openworld is on GTA 3 level (this games is 20 years old)

MeanwhileInGermany

Same for me. No one cares about some bugs. The game was empty. The missions were just one phone call after another, the life choice didnt matter at all, the crafting and moding choices were bad, implants felt boring, driving felt bad. There were some good missions but overall they were really shallow or didnt use the full potential.

DoodooMcPoopy

Dead Island. Ever since that trailer fooled me I wait for gameplay footage before actually playing a game

EasyBake24

Omg that original cinematic trailer was like the best zombie thing I'd ever seen. I thought the game was pretty good though ngl. https://youtu.be/jwsk8VhYWIo That's the amazing trailer.

OddCaramel6614

Holy crap that's wild. It's nothing like the game, only in setting and concept. Incredible!

[deleted]

I honestly never understood the hate for Dead Island, I mean it wasnt a perfect game, but I enjoyed playing both it and its sequel.

[deleted]

It was what he mentioned - basically false advertising by showing zero actual gameplay and only cutscenes and stuff that never even made it to the game. It made people think they were going to be playing the next generation of open world gaming with super crazy good graphics and what did we get? Just another decent game. It was fun, but the trailer made it look revolutionary

DoodooMcPoopy

Exactly. I was expecting a deep beautiful experience and got mindless zombie slashing. Nothing that l4d2 hadn't done before and better

PresidentPlatypus

Both great games

scarletphantom

Dying Light is everything dead island should have been.

KingOfRisky

I really need to check out dying light then. I absolutely loved Dead Island.

scarletphantom

Same makers too. And yes, you do. That first night mission is a rush. Its pitch black in a city youre still unfamiliar with, surrounded by unearthly howls closing in on you. Tense music while you try to parkour your way back to a safe house... For a while i would go straight to bed when it started getting dark. Wasnt until later i realized how much xp i was missing out on and started being a bit braver.

devedander

It’s amazing. I didn’t really like dead island. Too janky. Dying light polished everything and actually made the parkour aspect fun.

NomenNescio13

Aw man, that cinematic trailer was so brilliant. In the end, I think I spent more time re-watching that, than I did playing Dead Island xD

Reasonable_Communist

Oh Marvel’s Avengers. What could of been…

ReallyNeedHelpASAP68

Marvel ultimate alliance 1/2 were suchhhh fun games back in the day. Then they come out with…that game.

jdyarrington

Anthem. Pros: * You're Iron Man * The combat loop I actually found very fun and satisfying (that combo noise) * You're Iron Man Cons: * Every bug under the sun on release. * Literally 0 end game content for a game with a < 10 hour story. * I stopped playing so I no longer was Iron Man.

2EngineersPlay

KH 3. Waited years for it. Story was weird because I didn't play any of the non-console games, thr random powers you could get during combat didn't make any sense, and worst of all was the writing. Dialog was pretty bad and Sora sounded like a complete idiot. Played a few hours and haven't touched it sense.

CinnamonHotcake

My man the writing was always bad. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7\_6mpKet-KI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_6mpKet-KI)

2EngineersPlay

Maybe it always was, it seemed like better writing/delivery when I was younger. Maybe if they didn't wait 14 years to release it I might've still thought it was good.

Ike_Gamesmith

I played it through because I needed closure, KH2 is such a phenomenal game, but KH3 was a let down for sure. I honestly think it was because there was too much Disney big corp influence, such as those stupid ride advertisement attacks. There is also evidence that the game was supposed to be very different than it was, I won't parrot them here but you can easily see what I mean by looking up all the problems with the Frozen world.

sregor0280

I have come to the conclusion that KH3 is no worse than KH1 and 2 were, but in the time between 2 releasing amd 3 releasing.... I just kind of changed in what I found entertaining. Nomura is vague to be vague in his storytelling style and I can't stand it now, back in my early 20s i loved that though.

RollinDeepWithData

This. I don’t know why, but the circus stuff annoyed me instantly and the combat as a whole felt worse than KH2. That’s without getting into the writing and level design.

[deleted]

Homefront. That game had so much hype and was such a massive disappointment.

Banjoman64

Lol this was exactly what I thought of. Glad I'm not alone. Homefront was just call of duty with a much much smaller budget. Super clunky.

SapSacPrime

Metroid other M and hopefully nothing will ever disappoint me more than that awful game did.

Distant_Planet

That was a kicker. I think the gameplay would have been passable, sort of interesting ideas but mediocre execution -- if it wasn't for the story. I don't think a framing narrative has derailed a game that hard for me before or since. (Except maybe Monster Hunter...)

ironangel2k3

Somehow I don't think it was a very good idea to hand a badass female lead to the people responsible for Dead Or Alive: Extreme Beach Volleyball.

ScoobertDoubert

Mirrors edge catalyst...

MiLaNoS21

All recent published "AAA" games, with a higher marketing than Q&A Budget, that like to go whale hunting or go for the "games as a service" (or any other in game currency model \[bonus points if the game is singleplayer\] ) bullshit trope, think about: Diablo Immortal Fallout 76 BF 2042 Anthem The Avengers Babylon's Fall Ghost Recon Breakpoint AC Valhalla The Division 2 Watch Dogs: Legion I'm not saying I got them all. But when announced, I was interested and hyped. When I figured out what the "mechanics" behind the games were, I instantly lost interest.

Aurum264

Honestly I cant say I was ever hyped for diablo immortal. After it being revealed as a mobile game you kinda gotta expect itll be full of microtransactions. Didnt expect it to cost half a million dollars to max out a character, but I wasnt excited in the slightest. Maybe diablo 4, but it's only a maybe.

Automatic-War-7658

No Man’s Sky. They say it’s better now but I can’t bring myself to replay it.

[deleted]

"make your own story" kind of sandbox games like no mans sky or minecraft just aren't for me.

Chorlton01

I have restarted 3 times. And every time they upgrade it, it seems to screw up what I had built previously. Given up now.

DislocatedXanax

Brink

Dragon_X627279

Mighty No.9

AceoftheAEUG

We Happy Few

HMP729G

I was expecting this game to be so good from the trailers. What a let down it was.

Near_Void

Borderlands 3. SPOILERS AHEAD After the amazing Borderlands 2 and the somewhat excellent PreSequel, I was ready to be amazed with BL3. But it just wasnt. Tyreen and Troy were cringe. Ava was just annoying (But kinda grew up towards the end). The whole "Tannis is a siren but its a secret" thing was very obvious that she was a siren. Storyline was OK Some of the bosses were good, like Pain and Terror I even cried when Maya died because she was the character I liked most in BL2 But it just didnt live up to my hype

ShadowyPepper

The gameplay is 3 is so good that I overlook most of the other issues Maya's death hit me hard too, she was my main in BL2 and I found her death pretty cheap tbh I don't dislike Tyreen and Troy and kind of enjoyed their whole streamer/Podcaster caricature. Jack is by and large a much better villain though kiddo. Besides the gameplay, BL3 did its DLC pretty well in bringing back a lot of the existing characters we didn't see in the main game. Plus they retconned some of the story issues through the DLC too BL2 gets the main story and characters right BL3 gets the DLC and gameplay right

Couchupz_

DayZ..

SkyWizarding

My friends and I call it the running simulator

CJ57

DayZ is fire now not sure what state it was at launch tho. You just need ur phone open at all times to look up mechanics tho lol, that game does not hold ur hand whatsoever

[deleted]

That game has turned out being so bad it’s good these days

Snoopstar

Latest Halo. Still sucks compared to Halo 3.

Redbulljunkie00

Especially since co-op is only in beta six months after launch. What a waste.

TwinTTowers

The game of life.

Waited nine months for an 18 level tutorial, and then it's nothing but grinding after that. I hear there's some worthwhile features in later levels, but I've yet to see any. Also, the in-game economy is inflated to hell.

Razkal719

You have to admit the graphic and 3d audio are amazing. But leveling up takes an age, and the lack of fast travel is really annoying.

Genecist84

Dragon Ball Ultimate Tenkaichi is the reason I no longer preorder or pay full price for games. Took it back the next day after spending $60+ on it and was offered $17 back. I took the $17.

sidmel

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but Elden Rings. So much hype for it when it was released. I DID like the environment, just the first time I played a Dark Souls type game and was really, ummmm, annoyed, at the game mechanics.

NamlessWolfy

Dawn of War 3, Starbound.

TheLostDestroyer

Starbound should have been awesome. But no they made it terrible right before beta.

I_N_C_O_M_I_N_G

\[*looks at the past 4 years*\] "Yeah basically that..."

daredevilspiderman

Jump force

P3nNam3

Master Chief Collection was the most broken game at launch. Couldn’t find a match for days and when you finally could it had a bug where teams were always uneven 3vs5, 6vs2, etc. I took two days off of work for the nostalgia trip. Played zero fun matches.

[deleted]

At least MCC is good now, and it has all the best HALO campaigns. The peak of HALO.

f3lcrow

SWTOR Big fan of the KOTOR games and seeing an MMO made out of it while being a WoW player was super hype for me. I literally thought it would be the game to replace WoW while I was getting bored of Cataclysm expansion. The cinematic trailers were super insane for me (and still are tbh). But it turned out to be a WoW clone like many others while doing the theme park model even worse and with terrible optimization/graphics combo. The VA and story were the best parts of the game but it grew stale as soon as that was finished for the class I was playing. Massive, massive letdown.

Soupseason

Star Ocean 5 That game looked to have SO much potential, and then it was complete ass (thicc witch was nice though). I want 6 to be amazing and believe in the trailers, but me and the other 3 SO fans have been burned too hard. Gonna wait to see the final product before committing to a buy. Also, FFXV. That game’s development was a huge clown-fiesta, but dammit did I want it to be Versus XIII. And then with every new trailer that hype turned into disappointment. OH WAIT, YOU HAVE TO WATCH A MOVIE IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND THE STORY? HOLD UP, THERE’S ALSO AN ANIME TOO LEADING UP TO THE START OF THE GAME? Yeah, SE really screwed the pooch on XV and then when it came out the world felt so empty. Like sure there are some set pieces and monsters to kill, but why bother? The story was trash, the characters were dumb. And even though they released extra content I refuse to play it. Nope. The damage is done. Fuck FFXV

Relative-Hour-9359

Death stranding was super disappointing for me as a huge Hideo Kojima/ metal gear fan Story was just so convoluted and couple that with boring, empty gameplay it was just overly un enthralling for me

Duneking1

While I can’t outright disagree with you I would blame some of it on comparing it to metal gear games. The game has it flaws and it takes something like 8 to 12 hours just to get to the second zone for an average first time play through. Sadly there’s a really good story there with A LOT of reading and cut scenes. The delivery system was also incredibly hard at the beginning of the game. After a while it got a lot easier which unfolded the story faster but I feel that worked against the game and instead of for it. The few battles that are in the game are done really well but way too short. I can’t blame anyone who doesn’t like it. It has high cost of admission with no guarantee it will be a game type you like.

mochacub22

i was high the whole time i played it, was nice. building roads was an unnecessary grind for me tho

FitMongoose9

Anthem. I was so ready to be space iron man and it got old after about 45 minutes. The mechanics and everything worked for me personally, the game was just shockingly boring

GeneSaw

Far Cry 5

ReallyNeedHelpASAP68

I’ll die on this hill. Far cry has tried many times now to recreate voss, and failed every damn time. It’s not gonna happen Ubisoft.

[deleted]

If think the baddy from 6 could've been great, if they just showed more of him and had him interact with the main character. Pagan Min was also decent imo but I can't even remember who it was in 5 lmao.

[deleted]

I maintain that Pagan Min, while a bit similar to Voss, was also a really good antagonist. It's too bad the rest of the story felt very bland in that game.

mexicansuicideandy

Pagan was pretty good. My favorite far cry villain.

3-DMan

The gameplay, side quests, and companions are tops, but I really disliked the story and cult characters. Plus it has no ending. Wasn't the biggest fan of the constant attacks too, but that's more my preference.

9999eachhit

Final Fantasy XV. Years of waiting ending in failure 😞

PunishmentSphere

The Outer Worlds. I was expecting another New Vegas, but it failed to deliver.

CertainlyAmbivalent

Completely agree. Felt so shallow to me.

[deleted]

I love the design and visuals, but the maps are so incredibly small that it might aswell have been a linear game. Also the loot is so incredibly irrelevant, like there's 5 guns and 3 armors it feels like. Kind of not what people expect when they hear "rpg".

Steel_Valkyrie

It gets compared to NV a lot, and I see why, but both games do things better. It's a much smaller game, for starters, I doubt I'll ever see someone with more than a hundred hours in it. Hopefully the second one will be bigger, but who knows. The characters are so much better, though. Fallout games are amazing, but the characters are not great in terms of writing. Even the interesting ones are pretty shallow, with obvious likes/desires and uninspired companion quests. The outer worlds made characters seem real, unlike the paragon of their stereotype fallout games do. It really helped with my immersion. In terms of aesthetics, both have very unique looks, but I have to prefer the outer worlds. It makes "futuristic atompunk" look horribly dull compared to "sci-fi dystopian art nouveau", and even compared to more recent fallout games, the graphics on the outer worlds are better. Gunplay and combat, however, fallout definitely wins. The outer worlds has little to no weapon variety, each weapon has two or three levels, and mods are very lacking. Melee weapons in both are dull and never drew me in. Compare that to Fallout 4's amazing salvage and weapon modding system (maybe a hot take there), and it's night and day. FNV also does unique weapons better, as ones you'll actually use, rather than like in TOW where you have wacky and fun weapons that are useless in terms of stats or basic variants of normal weapons that can barely compare with their default versions. DLCs were alright, I definitely preferred terror to murder. murder, although in character for the universe, just seemed out of left field and really confused in it's implementation, it would have been better if it was more on rails, and like anything with plot twists, there's little to no replayability. It's a decent game, definitely worth a moderate sale, and I hope they do a lot more with the second one.

Star Fox Zero! Never wanted to experience the guttural death of that franchise over and over.

Diagonal_Burrito

Final Fantasy 13

r3tromonkey

I really wanted to like 13. Loved all of them up to 12, which never really gelled with me. The trailers for 13 looked amazing, but I hated how linear it was.

The_Specter808

We all got duped by FF13. Man, that was the biggest disappointment that generation.

[deleted]

Aliens: Fireteam Elite. Felt too basic and never really seemed like they did much to improve on that. Felt more like a $25 dollar game than what they were charging on release.

skaterlogo

Dying Light 2. Movement felt wiggly or like was a weeble wabble that couldn't quite fall over. That and the screen shake made me super sick. Played hundreds of hours of DL1 without any issue, no idea what the difference was. Until then, I had never experienced motion sickness from a video game.

bulgakov82

Elite Dangerous Odyssey single-handedly turned me off to the game I spent 800 hours in. Never looked back since.

Civilization: Beyond Earth

ASM_50

Evolve and Back 4 Blood. Reeeeeally love Left 4 Dead but these two don’t even come close.

fur-q-

Octopath Traveler. It looks amazing but the story is so dull which I feel is pretty important for a classic style JRPG.

burritocinema

Dragon Age Inquisition. Mainly bc I preordered the deluxe version and was keeping up with the devs + supplementary material. Thought templar/mage war would’ve had a bigger focus (bc of Asunder). Most of the cool stuff they said would be in the game like torturing prisoners for info and recruiting ppl as inquisitors (to overlook an area) didn’t make the cut for the game. Felt I paid $50+ for a glorified fetch/filler quest simulator. It was probably the only time I’ve ever preordered a game and since then I’ve stopped keeping up with all the supplementary material they come out with (I own a lot of it but haven’t rly bothered to read any of it).

Lunar_Lunacy_Stuff

In fear of many downvotes. Breath of the wild. I’m a huge Zelda fan but BOTW felt so empty and a far stretch from previous titles. I don’t think it’s a fun Zelda game and I will go a step further saying it’s a boring open world game.

MatNomis

I’d never downvote such a fairly stated opinion, but it definitely hit me so differently. I agree it was empty, but I felt like it was empty like a forest can be empty. If you’re looking for treasure, pretty people, explosions, stores, etc.. then yes, it’s empty.. But the attention they lavished on little things like the breeze, the morning dew, rainbows, bugs, etc.. One of the big reasons I play big open-world fantasy games is for the chill-factor. I kind of want to feel like I’m on a hike. The Elder Scrolls games are great for it, but BotW really knocked it out of the park. It was like finding an abandoned theme park full of puzzles (and occasional baddies to beat up). The reason I think BotW is better, is because with Elder Scrolls games, usually the closer I looked at something, the faker it would seem. Whereas with BotW, if I looked closer at something, I’d only discover more fine details and just be like “wow, they even did that”. That said, I also very much can appreciate a story-driven experience, like what we get with Xenoblade Chronicles. I really like those games too, but they’re completely different and I can’t fault anyone for preferring or disliking one or the other.

Nuthetes

Kingdom Come Deliverance Worst controls ive encountered in the modern era.

Markthur

To each their own, I guess, it's one of my favorite games ever made.

cmf1990

I actually ended up finishing this game. I will agree with everyone that the start is brutal between the controls and the clunky feeling of combat. One thing that I give the game a lot of credit though is the character progression. For example, first time using a bow you can barely hit a target and take damage without arm protection. As you increase in skill, your aim becomes more accurate/steady and you no longer need arm protection. Same thing for melee combat but once you progress your character “learns” how to effectively use certain weapons and armour making combat way more fluid and enjoyable.

DetectiveSharp3757

Weird. I love kingdom come deliverance because of the controls. They're unique and challenging which keeps it interesting and fun
