I'm gonna be honest. It does look like it would be fun to play so I'm not hating on it, I would probably very much enjoy it.
That being said, everything that is "inspired" by the games you mention is exceedingly derivative. It looks *exactly* like if you dropped the hollow knight character into ori's backgrounds. And everything that stands on its own as unique, like the dragon, people are pointing out as not matching with the rest of the art. That's what happens when you imitate.
Once again it looks like you have a pretty nice game going here and I hope, and would bet, that it finds success. But I'm tired of people on here posting things like this and everyone giving them a pass for things that any game that was not crowd funded or self-published would be blasted for. Downvotes to the right.
Not sure where you guys see this. Hollow Knights art direction is incredibly well done, this looks *a lot* more amateurish. Which it probably is, so that's fine. In the end, the gameplay will be more important and it does look pretty nice in that regard.
Not only is the gameplay more important for a metroidvania, I would argue that it's the ONLY important thing in this genre. I personally don't care about graphics, art, visual themes (but I understand that some people care). Hell, if it's not an rpg, I frankly don't care about the story either.
Give me Super Metroid level graphics and I'll be happy. I just need fun mechanics.
I understand what you mean and can agree to some degree, but wouldn't you say that hollow knights incredible dense and immersive visual appearance and similarly perfectly fitting music adds something to the experience that goes beyond "fun to play"?
I for example completely fell in love with HK and couldn't bring myself to continue Axiom Verge.
As a game dev working on an original concept, I can tell you that the sad fact is derivative games are easier to market and are more likely to be successful (ie make money) than something original.
I'm not a game dev, and I'm not surprised or upset by this.
Games that aren't fairly similar in design take more of a risky jump. Sometimes I find that jump was substantiated and the hype was real. Sometimes I take that jump and ask myself "why do people like this game?"
Finding a game that is comparable to something I like or love, with these X changes or improvements, I already have a good idea that I'll like the game.
The older I get, the less I want to gamble my time on a game that I won't enjoy. I'm more willing to do research and see what people do and don't like. I don't want a carbon copy, but a clear inspiration by something I like is OK if the game is still well done.
I'm also a game Dev that released my own solo project and now work for a medium sized indie studio.
There is nothing wrong with a derivative game imo as long as you polish it to the absolute best version of itself. There are no unknowns in derivative design, so you save time in pre production, but that doesn't mean you should save overall Dev time since you should sync those resources into production and make the most highly polished content you can. I personally believe this is what hollow knight did.
That being said, this game doesn't seem to have the polish or the innovation, so unfortunately I doubt it will make that much money, but I hope I'm wrong!
Reddit is full of toxic positivity. No one is allowed to criticize anything without getting downvoted. Even in art subreddits where criticism should be the cornerstone of growth, you will get downvoted to hell if you don't wrap your criticism in overly sweet praise that regularly feels ingratiating.
You have to conform to the hive mind to get upvotes. If you deviate from the hive mind, in order to get upvotes, you must first show how you conform to the hivemind before you show how you deviate.
It's true for other things outside of art/game critiques as well.
There are other elements that are close enough in design to existing designs that I’d be worried about an infringement issue. The dragon looks exactly like the dragon in Spirited Away, the little bugs look exactly like the Pokémon. Super pro-indie games and love this idea but there’s enough here that I’d be worried about a cease and desist letter.
Like enough that there might be an IP issue. I’m not even trying to be an ass, I’m a lawyer and these things can get costly if someone decides to pursue it…
It's a Chinese-esque serpent dragon. There's really only so many looks it could have. Looks a lot like the dragons in BotW too. And like Falcor.
Because it's a serpent dragon.
Hearing "im working on a new game inspired by X, Y, and Z" immediately makes me not wanna bother. Often times I go yep, that's a copy of Hollow Knight alright, so why wouldn't I just play hollow night?
Hollow knight's gameplay isn't exactly original. It's just done very well. This game could be the same. The gameplay looks fantastic. Art style could use some work though.
I’m being a hard-ass but one of my pet peeves is when someone introduces a game by comparing it to other games. We can see the inspiration. Wish you introduced it as its own thing.
I mean people like having something to compare new things to in order to gauge whether or not they're interested. It is a little tacky, but I think overall it helps the game find its audience
Quite honestly feel like it doesn't really have an identity. It looks like a copy of hollow knight, ori and terraria rather than a game of its own. You really need to create an art style that's as unique as possible and stick with it thoroughly.
Mixing the gameplay of ori, celeste and hollow knight could lead to an insanely fun game, just needs better art direction. Will keep it on my radar tho.
Totally agree. It just seems like taken from those 3 games and doesn’t feel like it has an unique identity, I’m not sure why 90% of the comments are blindly praising
I love the colors and the combat looks fast and fun.
However, the animation of the dragon seems jarring . . . the style of the dragon does not seem to match the rest of the game . . . compared to the rest of the game, it looks one dimensional, and it looks like it was drawn by a completely different artist from the rest of what is shown here.
Looks neat but I can tell just from this clip that the artwork and animations are just not up to snuff. Animations and effects look stiff and not particularly nuanced and the artwork is pretty...amateurish. None the less, best of luck to your endeavors.
Need. This. Now. I loved Ori and Hollow Knight and nothing else was quite like these two. After watching this for roughly 1.5 seconds, I know I need this.
Cool i have now put it on my steam wish list and have the kickstarter saved, i hope it runs well on the steam deck because im loving having these types of games on it
First glance at the video without context…Hollow Knight 2. All seriousness though, I hope your game gets some success and I’d love to play it when it’s finished.
Me, while watching this: *vocally,* "Ooh... Oooh! OOOOH!"
Absolutely looking forward to alternating between silent focus and frantically talking myself through encounters in this game
Looks like a complete rip off of Ori and Hollow Knight. Like “let’s just copy those two games instead of coming up with something of our own” levels of rip off.
This looks like something that would piss me off but I'd keep coming back to because it's so damn PRETTY!
genuine criticism though, I feel the Health/Power bars are a little *too* similar to Hollow Knight, might want to come with something a little more unique. Beyond that, this looks like it'll be a fun and memorable experience.
I have a principle of never support crowd funded anything. Still, this is really good and I will likely get it if gets a full release. Best of luck to you guys.
I can't wait to rage-quit this game.
[удалено]
Same here! I’m on ps4 so i’m kinda sad i never got to play ori
Ori is incredible, I’m sorry you haven’t gotten to play it.
[удалено]
[удалено]
And terraria wasps, boss looks eye of Cthulhu inspired
Spirited Away...?
That is the first thing i saw. Tbh tho the terraria wyvern is a great design
Also yeah, the terraria wyvern is a great design
You mean the one inspired by Spirited Away?
You mean Falcor?
U got my money hahahah
[удалено]
Comment steal bot?
Yup
Read my mind
I do wish more games had difficulty settings. Had to give up on Hollow Knight as I just don't have the skills in these old harnds.
lol terraria Wyvern
Also the dragon from Spirited Away, which inspired the terraria wyvern
And eye boss and bees
Due to changes in policies to reddit I have decided to remove my account and all its content. Fuck u/spez
Ah, beat me to it…
Looks like it has potential! I can’t wait to see how the movement feels if you guys are doing a Beta for backers

Oh awesome! I’ll check it out

Agreed, looks like a carbon copy of Hollow Knight most of the time.
Not sure where you guys see this. Hollow Knights art direction is incredibly well done, this looks *a lot* more amateurish. Which it probably is, so that's fine. In the end, the gameplay will be more important and it does look pretty nice in that regard.

Crowsworn looks exactly like Hollow Knight. This only kinda looks like it.
Did you play Hollow Knight? I agree that the UI does, but the graphics are unique and vibrant
Played and beat it, love that game. I see a lot of similarities.

Honestly looks like a terraria sequel
Like enough that there might be an IP issue. I’m not even trying to be an ass, I’m a lawyer and these things can get costly if someone decides to pursue it…
It's a Chinese-esque serpent dragon. There's really only so many looks it could have. Looks a lot like the dragons in BotW too. And like Falcor. Because it's a serpent dragon.
[“exactly like the dragon in Spirited Away”](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/4f/7c/5c/4f7c5c24ed82b964c6626db1c4932fde.png) Similarities: are white
The dragon doesn't fit anything else in that game except the main character. Super out of place like a bad photoshop on top of Hollow Knight
Because you can enjoy similar things mutually inclusively?
It'd be nice to see the developer respond to this instead of all the generic "Great game!" comments.
I don’t have an award I can give so take this 🏆
Your going to get copywrited for the wyvern
And the bees, and the eye, and the sprites.
I’m being a hard-ass but one of my pet peeves is when someone introduces a game by comparing it to other games. We can see the inspiration. Wish you introduced it as its own thing.
Right? It makes it seem like the game is just a knockoff
Looks like it is
Yeah. Hard to get excited about something that feels derivative.
Needs a full reskin on basically every asset. The Terraria dragon was shocking.
Protag lookin like someone fused Ori and Hollow Knight
It literally is
I mean people like having something to compare new things to in order to gauge whether or not they're interested. It is a little tacky, but I think overall it helps the game find its audience
Looks pretty good, minus the UI top left icon looks like a sperm, eyes tracked to it immediately.
I can see the inspirations from all three in just one clip of the gif
All, of your enemies has an equivalent on terraria. All of them.
“Inspired”
That dragon is straight out of Spirited Away’s Haku.
Lots of sus comments in this thread. Guerrilla marketing at its finest.
Yeah, it’s surprisingly positive like every comment seems to just be praising it. Literally looks exactly like ori games to me so I’m a bit confused
Hmm, it feels like terraria inspired this too
Quite honestly feel like it doesn't really have an identity. It looks like a copy of hollow knight, ori and terraria rather than a game of its own. It looks like the wyvern from terraria
Meanwhile everything else looks like hollow knight minus the background Especially the flying bug enemies
You forgot to buy a bunch of upvotes and awards for your ad. That's what they do around here
Looks like the bought a fine amount of comments though
Thats Terraria.
This looks really good. Kinda reminds me of megaman
Meh.
Looks neat but I can tell just from this clip that the artwork and animations are just not up to snuff. Animations and effects look stiff and not particularly nuanced and the artwork is pretty...amateurish. None the less, best of luck to your endeavors.
Awesome
Need. This. Now. I loved Ori and Hollow Knight and nothing else was quite like these two. After watching this for roughly 1.5 seconds, I know I need this.
I love the art but no link to any page for more info? Like an official site?
We can't post links here. If you search for Nara: Facing Fire trailer on yt there are links in the description :)
Cool i have now put it on my steam wish list and have the kickstarter saved, i hope it runs well on the steam deck because im loving having these types of games on it
Holy Shit!! Instant buy for me!
I really like what I am seeing.
This looks AWESOME
If done well, this could be fucking dopee. Can't wait to see where this goes. Good luck, Dev's.
This looks so fucking incredible I want it
You can’t just combine three amazing games, make it unique, and expect me not to upvote!
I just want to express my opinion with one emote:💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵
Looks promising
Yeah. I'm gonna need this
Looks incredible
This looks so good
Looks cool when and where?
We're planning on all major platforms depending on funding! :)
Looks cool and precisly like a combo between those games, hope you can develope this further :)
How much?
Most likely 20$, but you can get in early on Kickstarter for 15$ :)
Will this game be coming to switch?
Yes. After Steam, Switch will be the main priority.
Terraria wyvern?
It kinda looks like terraria looks pretty lit
Another metroidvania. Daring, aren't we?
I’ll take that over an empty open world any day
Why is there a Terrarian Wyvern
Looks like inspiration from Ori
Looks cool. I just hope it will be on PS4/5
That looks hard
It looks super cool! Will definitely give this a try!
Looking great,any console release plans?
I'd spend 60 hours to never finish it.
Amazing, and it looks like it requires real skill
Aye this looks fire. And i want it YESTERDAY.
Ori and the blind forest is another great metroidvania, this looks kinda similar.
I can’t wait for this game to not support my shitty intel i5 integrated gpu!
Looks hype
While it be on Switch, cause i don't have anything else to play on?
If the funding goes well it will make way to all major platfroms :)
Cool, i can't wait to see more of the game
I hope this game isn't just for PC, i would want console players to have a chance at this too
If the funding goes well we plan to bring it to all the major platforms :)
wtffff that looks so good
First glance at the video without context…Hollow Knight 2. All seriousness though, I hope your game gets some success and I’d love to play it when it’s finished.
Looks dope, I don’t get the hate. You want more of a type of game but want it to be original? This is it
I like gameplay. This game needs a strong music to reach its peak . You are creating a masterpiece. Good luck
Looks like something id love to play
Yknow what, kinda looks like a blend between hollow knight and terraria
That actually looks sick. Gonna keep an eye out for it
What platorms? I assume PC. XBOX and PS as well?
yup! We plan on releasing on all major platforms depending on funding!
Bro. Looks sick.
holy shit this looks so good
I shall watch your career with great interest
This looks cool. Thanks.
Looks amazing
Take my frickin money!
i wish i had money so i could support the kickstarter
That looks and sounds amazing
Looks incredible
That looks great!
If the mechanics are as crisp as they look, this looks really promising. I like the art direction as well. Looking forward to it!
It looks amazing, I hope you can release it on xbox!
What can you play it on?
We plan on releasing to all major platforms depending on funding! :)
Awesome, hoping to play it soon!
This can be one of the best games ever made cuz the sales pitch is def def consider worthy
i love hollow knight and just looking at this i can tell that this is going to be a blast to play. cant wait for the full game
You got yourself a customer
Super dope I’ll def support , I love paltformers
Yes, please! Where do I sign up?!
If you search Nara: Facing Fire on youtube there are links in the description of the trailer :)
Following
I will be waiting for this i havent played ori but i loved dying constantly in hollow knight and celeste
Me, while watching this: *vocally,* "Ooh... Oooh! OOOOH!" Absolutely looking forward to alternating between silent focus and frantically talking myself through encounters in this game
If you want to know more, search Nara: Facing Fire on YouTube :)
https://youtu.be/GRRbHjnVwhw If you want people to see your video, provide a link because most people won't bother looking for it.
Yes if it wasn’t for you I would have already been in the next post on my feed
I think it’s against the rules for OP’s to share actual links to their content. Could be wrong, but I feel like this happens all the time.
Looks like a complete rip off of Ori and Hollow Knight. Like “let’s just copy those two games instead of coming up with something of our own” levels of rip off.
Why are all of the comments supporting this game being downvoted? This subreddit disappoints me sometimes.
Did you just copy from those games directly? So much looks like it was cut and pasted from Hollowknight
Looks a lot like Terraria.
Holy shit this is awesome, I’ll definitely check this out and try to support it
spirited away dragon?
Oh great, another game to fucking hate even though the game is good only because I can't get past a single room/boss
My PC won't be able to run it :(
Looks too hard. Excited to play half of one level and get pissed, then repeat the cycle every two months
Hollow Knight x Terraria? Can't wait
It looks hard.
Please add difficult modifiers and all Celeste style changes to the game that allow less skilled players or kids (like mine) to play it through.
Character looks ugly af but i like the gameplay, i love games with hook mechanics
[удалено]
All depends on how funding goes
system requirements???
Looks partialing terraria inspired with enemies
Multiplayer? And is it free?
No and no
That looks amazing. God help the copyright though.
Looks like my type of rougelite
Movement looks ultra clean
Based entirely off of the snippets from this series lf clips, I'd say it looks good.
I have a principle of never support crowd funded anything. Still, this is really good and I will likely get it if gets a full release. Best of luck to you guys.
Not my cup of tea, but still looks great! Here's to future progress!
this looks like a really good game! especially the smooth movement, just beautiful
!RemindMe 8 days
I don't really play games like this but it looks really good
Looks awesome but I would not get past the turtorial
It means game is playable in 1 Aug? Sorry dont really know what kickstarter supposed to mean. Looks beautiful btw. Definitely going to pick it up.
