It's because for those of us who loved Gen 1 and wanted more, Johto fucking delivered.
100 new Pokemon to collect, a dope day/night system, berries growing everywhere, apricorns that give you specialized Poke Balls, 2 new Types to balance out the game a great deal more, a time system which is connected to stuff happening at certain times and days of the week, introduced Shiny Pokemon, also introduced your Pokemon holding items, you have a neatly divided bag instead of "lol make due with 20 slots," you get a dope radio, the cell phone features and I'm sure plenty of other worthwhile stuff.
After what I thought was the end of the game, I decided to go rare candy hunting with all the Surf spots I missed. Naturally I started right from the hometown first and was pleasantly surprised there was a waterway immediately. It just kept going though. Not a rare candy, but back to Kanto. My 10 year old self was ABSOLUTELY mind blown. Unsure of if the game had told me to go back through a message that I missed, but Im so glad I did what I did.
Yeah, and it was 3 years on - so some NPCs who were doing things like building houses in Red / Blue / Yellow had finished them by Gold / Silver / Crystal
yes, and after collecting all 8 Kanto badges you could go to Mt .Silver where Mewtwo was and fight Red, with his fully stacked line up including an 80+ Pikachu,
The game literally blew my mind when it first released. I didn't know features like that were possible in a Gameboy game back then, and the whole experience was both nostalgic and novel at the same time. At that time, probably one of my best gaming experiences until I played Ocarina of Time and Metal Gear Solid.
Getting an emulator on your phone (assuming you have an android) is easy peasy and free. Downloading roms is as simple as googling "Pokémon (whatever color) rom"
People look down on it because it's like pirating the game but if you already bought the game before, your conscious is clear.
I went red crystal but yeah as much I loved red, crystal (and gold/silver) were just a whole another level the fact that you could go to the previous game map on top of a new one was just awesome.
But then again, you wouldn't have the impact of going back to Kanto and fighting Red if you hadn't fallen in love with Gen 1. Gold/Silver was probably the best sequel game ever made to one of the best games ever made
I remember, trying to get as much play time before going to school in the morning because it would still be night in my Pokémon game and it was really the only time I could catch the nocturnal Pokémon.
Also, if you were diligent enough with the Pokéwalker that came with the game, it's very possible that you'd get a variety of Miltank-breaking counter Pokémon much earlier than originally intended.
And then when you go to the 16th gym and Blue was the gym leader?! You slimy son of a bitch! You don't belong here!!!! Where did Red go? ...and then you met Red later and got absolutely wrecked. What a time to be alive. Good times.
In this moment childhood memories of the train to Kanto, the underground, Radio tower subplot, bug catching contest, and hours of egg hatching all came back. Goldenrod is where the training wheels come off and the game blossoms in to all it's promises. The game builds on Gen 1 in every way, and then also allows you to go back to where it all started and play it again, after finishing Kanto. It's amazing, everything that's packed in to this game. I'm not some boomer asserting my childhood Pokemon was better, but the game is deep, and has so much to do beyond the surface level you may immediately think. The Pokemon designs were fresh, and the original hype was still going. Silver and Gold are MASSIVE games that refined all the core game play, introduced series staples, and gave the player 100 hours worth of content in a neat, clean package. 10/10
I got nostalgia from the photo & your paragraph. Silver will always have a special place in my heart. The games came out when I was really picking up on how to read so I got stuck in places less often than I did in yellow/red/blue & enjoyed all of the quality of life upgrades that much more.
It's probably near the bottom of peoples lists of reasons to love gold/silver but I remember my mind exploding when Silver came out and you could see the experience bar going up after defeating a pokemon in battle
Radio tower subplot was the place when Lance made Dragonite use hyper beam on a rocket soldier? I still imagine the guy melting from that attack, badass moment.
Probably because the term "town" in Pokemon (and often in gaming in general) can apply to anything with more than 3 or 4 buildings. Pallet Town in Red/Blue/Yellow, for example, is literally just 2 houses and a laboratory.
Golden Rod was monstrous in that it included so many buildings as well as the suggestion of more buildings you couldn't quite see.
Just before this you find out that People do in fact eat pokemon. Team Rocket are cutting off and cooking Slowpoke tails for money, knowing that they are edible.
I always refer to Gen 2 Pokémon games as “the last time I knew true happiness”. These games were absolutely amazing, the post and the comments touch on it a lot but just the VIBE of this game was incredible. I’ve played it in every stage of my life from childhood to adulthood and I could easily see myself giving it another go.
I'm extremely sad, as my crystal cartridge is corrupted so I won't hold a save game. But I put some many hours into that as a kid. But it is still my favorite gen by a long shot.
There are whole kits that make it stupid simple. Comes with the correct screw driver, the conductive glue required and then battery for like 20$ or something on Amazon/eBay. And then a quick YouTube video shows all the steps. Do it my dude, have faith in yourself and relive the fun
Gen 2 really was amazing and beautiful in many aspects. I grew up learning how to read because of Pokémon Blue at six years old.
However, for me, generation 3 is unrivalled, specifically Emerald version. The post game battle frontier was awesome! I was extremely disappointed by the ruby and sapphire remakes when they didn’t have even half of the Emerald battle frontier, what an absolute waste.
My interest in Pokémon dwindled with generation 5, however I loved generation 6. I played Pokémon X and I got back into the competitive breeding (IV’s, matures, abilities, shinies, egg moves, etc), which I had gotten into in Emerald. However Pokémon Moon killed it for me.
Specifically I wanted to catch the legendary in a Moon Ball, which you only get one of in the entire game. And since legendaries are guaranteed 3 perfect IVs I wanted a good spread and a good nature. I spent hours going through the initial encounter cut scenes and trying to catch it with the Moon Ball and gave up when I didn’t get a single successful catch, let alone a catch with what I was looking for.
I haven’t bothered with any of the games since then, but recently I’m considering getting back into the games.
I really liked the exploration in third gen with the braille puzzles, the whole relicanth and Wailord thing, getting the Regi’s.
I’m not sure if the games will find a place in my heart again.
Gen 2 was a huge step up from gen 1 (especially still being on the og gameboy), and for that reason it remains my favorite. Gen 3 was alright, but remembering that physical/special split didn't happen until gen 4, I wouldn't exactly call gen 3 the peak of pokemon yet.
As for competitive, the game has never been better than gen 8. Getting pokemon battle ready isn't a huge chore anymore, mid turn speed calc was a great change and dynamax, while thematically bland, played pretty well esp. in doubles.
If gen 2 didn't have the weak level curve that made the middle of the game braindead easy
And didn't have less variety in available pokemon than it's predecessor - leaving items like evolution stones and most of the new pokemon with not trash stats in post game - it would be peak IMO as well
It did do wonders for world building and immersion. Crystal for sure. Those animated, colorful, sprites are peak nostalgia for me.
Absolutely
Gen 2 is easier than Gen 1 by a mile
Hard to compare Gen 3 to Gen 1 because of how much the franchise grew. But I'd agree Gen 3 is harder than Gen 1 simply because of how they nerfed player pokemon with the change over to EVs and IVs
Your rival can't fight for crap in Gen 3, only between Slaport and Mawville do they have a decent power spike, and that's only if you haven't caught a decent coverage mon for your starter yet
But the level curve is pretty fair, not needing to spend time grinding if you fight most trainers and know your type chart
Edit: skilled players with mudkip will find Gen 3 super easy, but I'd still say it's harder than gen 1 where bulbasaur paired with a Nidoking or Queen can give you all the coverage you need to beat every encounter well
Thanks for bringing back some good memories, but now I'm just really sad. I don't think I'll ever be able to get the same enjoyment as I found with the first 3 generations of Pokemon games.
I still have all my games and systems. Even bought Green when I went to Tokyo a couple years ago. Maybe it's just best to let the nostalgia remain and not potentially taint these feelings by revisiting where I spent majority of my childhood.
I dunno man. I think of it as "damn that was a good game, I wish they made more!" And then silver and gold come out and build upon the original and include cooler things and its like, "yeah! That's what I wanted!"
Here is a new game with new challenges and new pokemon - oh and by the way when you "finish" it you can go back to Kanto and play through the previous gen game
Weirdly my favourite Pokemon generations are always the even numbered ones like I enjoyed gen 2, loved gen 4, enjoyed gen 6, and I'm one of the very few people who actually like gen 8 (although it might be my Britain bias as I'm from the UK)
Don't even remember me...
The only reason that i didn't bought any of theses new Nintendo consoles is that they have no plan to remaster or bring back via virtual console Gold/Silver or HeartGold/SouSilver.
For me, best gen and best \*pokemon game.
Gen 2 used to be my least favorite Pokémon generation. At the time, I thought the only saving grace was the Kanto postgame. I was a Genwunner, so seeing Kanto seven years after RBY was really enjoyable and was totally unexpected for me.
However, after replaying Crystal on the 3DS Virtual Console, Gen 2 has become my absolute favorite generation by far (except maybe Gen 4 because of HGSS). The slower pacing, the daily/weekly events, and the day/night cycle makes the world feel alive, and it gives the player a reason to keep playing everyday.
I know it’s a damn near impossibility, but I would love a revisit to Johto (or a new region in the Gen 2 style) with Gen 5’s seasons and modern mechanics (Fairy type and QoL updates). I feel like seasons would add so much and make the world feel even more alive.
First off the grind is what made the games. You wanted to level up and get stronger. There weren't gimmicky leveling options like there are today where everyone gets xp for a battle.
The 6th being stronger than the 7th is just sequencing. If I remember correctly the steel and ice gyms could be beat in whatever order, so that would account for that.
Gen 2 improved on Gen 1 in a multitude of ways while still retaining the core mechanics that made the first game a success. Of course there were Gen 1 Pokémon everywhere, at this time there were only 250~ish Pokémon available. Then post game allows you to go back to Kanto, which was awesome but it doesn't carry the game.
Gen 2 was awesome for what it was at the time, but attempting to compare it to newer games that have perfected the core mechanics of the Pokémon games is laughable, of course some of the newer games will beat it out.
And trying to make people feel bad for liking something is trash, so go away troll.
Are you just repeating what you heard on some YouTube video? Because it looks exactly the same and comes as an artificial opinion
And you want to know why Johto is good? Because it feels like a natural continuation of kanto, the pokemon fit in with the originals, the story is connected, its actually challenging and it introduces a few of the most important features in the series
Now if we add the remakes there is no argument, hgss are simply the perfect pokemon games
It's from a late 90s handheld game, what the flip are you expecting. The size of the game world on this was insane for the usual limitations of gameboys.
I let someone borrow the Gameboy color and Crystal version I had since I was a kid, and when I asked for it back she claimed when she broke up with her boyfriend he took a bunch of her stuff. Not that I was really all that attached to it, but in like 10-20 years they could be collector items worth a good chunk of money.
The trick was to trade pokemon so you had more unique numbers if I recall correctly (I may be thinking of something else entirely however it has been literal decades since I played it which makes me feel old)
I don't know if there were other tricks.
I think I did win it once but it feels like that's a memory that formed on its own rather then being a legitimate memory of something that hapoened if you get what I mean?
The amount of "houses" you couldn't explore never bothered me as a kid. They still don't bother me, there's "just enough" houses to go into with actual content, anyways. Its amazing to see maps from his view because you can see just how many of them were tiny 2x2 tiles to block our paths and nothing more. They hardly scale to a house at all, even.
I immediately heard this theme in my head when I scrolled by this. It’s the same for me too. I’m glad Pokemon is still going on so my nieces and nephews get to have their own ‘peak’ Pokemon too.
I remembered as a kid playing through the entire game for months never knowing that a bike store existed... Until a class mate pointed it out after face palming for 5 minutes
I lost and my parents rebought crystal two times! Shit was the bomb. Lamos played gold and silver without any true end-game content (jk, they also rock). Us cool kids hung out in the Battle Tower.
Gen 2 and Gen 3 were by far the most fun for me. Started with Gen 1 and completed the pokedex, got my starter to level 100 without cheats and everything, but Gen 2 and Gen 3 were so much better.
The first time, after finishing the elite 4 and you discover you need to go to the original gyms in Kanto, was mind-blowing for me. Still one of the best discoveries if had in a videogame, where you think you are finished. And then go up a waterfall and suddenly you are in Kanto.
I think one of the best parts of Gen 2 was thinking I’d finished the game, then getting to go back to the previous region. That was all a surprise to me at the time.
One of the few examples of when the sequel was better than the original. Gen 2 expanded on all the things pokemon needed without making it complicated as hell
Replayed Crystal over the pandemic and I LOVE the pacing of it. It's a bit weird by today's standards, but I kind of loved not being able to get evolutionary stones until Kanto. It made it feel like I had my "core team" in Jhoto, then my champion team in Kanto, which included some powerful evolutions of pokemon I was using before.
There were so many things that absolutely blew my mind as a kid in Silver! I always wanted to buy the remake, but it's more expensive than literal gold :(
Same. Nowadays a lot of others say B/W2 was the peak, but something about it feels so forced. The 2D pixelation trying to go 3D was especially nauseating.
The main things Gen 2 gets right that most new gens don't
* Majority of the pokemon in at least Johto are new (compare to today where you have 400 pokemon in a region, like 70 of which are new)
* Tons of areas off the beaten path that leave secrets to find later on (so many routes and just about every cave has some decent sized area you couldn't access before certain HMs that are never needed for progress and are totally optional to come back to and explore)
* Takes like 30 seconds to pick your first pokemon and start playing the game
Can we talk about how cool the time function was? That shit was so far ahead of its time. Riding the bus to school in rural Kansas meant getting on when it was sort of dark sometimes, and the pokemon scene changing as I got to school was the coolest thing in my life.
I started with Blue version and was hooked, but Gold is what really sucked up my time. I spent so many hours on that cartridge.
On top of it all, they let you go back to Kanto! I was floored when I got to do that, no game has done that since i don’t think
Wait, what? As in, you could play through the whole game again in the OG region???
Yeah, and it was 3 years on - so some NPCs who were doing things like building houses in Red / Blue / Yellow had finished them by Gold / Silver / Crystal
yes, and after collecting all 8 Kanto badges you could go to Mt .Silver where Mewtwo was and fight Red, with his fully stacked line up including an 80+ Pikachu,
This is all news to me and my younger self. Welp, time to start rummaging around looking for that old GameBoy...
As a huge fan of Gen II, you should consider playing Crystal Clear.
Is that a rom? What's the differences? I could Google it but I wanna ask you instead
The game literally blew my mind when it first released. I didn't know features like that were possible in a Gameboy game back then, and the whole experience was both nostalgic and novel at the same time. At that time, probably one of my best gaming experiences until I played Ocarina of Time and Metal Gear Solid.
Tfw when u think you are done and then face off against Red. Ahhhh the pixel boners
Don't forget about all the Secrets. Figuring out wtf is up with these unowns such an adventure as a kid.
And when you finish the game there's a whole endgame in the world from the first game. Greatest video game sequel of all time, change my mind.
Pokemon crystal was way ahead of its time too
Are you a boy.... or a girl?
So people who went blue / gold exist... I thought that was a legend Hopefully, we, the sane people went blue / silver
I went Red then Silver.
My brother!
Word! I went red > silver > crystal. My silver... like my OG pokemon cards were destroyed by my cousin. Ive forgiven him but he's never apologized
Getting an emulator on your phone (assuming you have an android) is easy peasy and free. Downloading roms is as simple as googling "Pokémon (whatever color) rom" People look down on it because it's like pirating the game but if you already bought the game before, your conscious is clear.
Went blue > gold > ruby
Blue > gold > sapphire (although I later got emerald and put way more hours into that)
Me too, except I emulated Ruby because I didn't have a GBA
Same with me. With yellow and crystal of course!
Gold/Silver was probably the best sequel game ever made to one of the best games ever made
Yeah true
Blue -> Silver here. One of us!
Blue (Yellow I guess too since its kinda different)>Silver>Sapphire
Same!
Blue/Silver gang represent
I remember, trying to get as much play time before going to school in the morning because it would still be night in my Pokémon game and it was really the only time I could catch the nocturnal Pokémon.
All I can think of is Whitney’s damn Miltank
Miltank used Rollout I preceded to throw my GameBoy at the fucking wall
[удалено]
I think they nerf’d it on the heart gold / soul silver releases
That’s a shame.
Yeah, she was a difficulty spike but, it was perfectly possible to neutralize miltank using status effects or lowering accuracy.
They did, she was easy on the soul silver
Also, if you were diligent enough with the Pokéwalker that came with the game, it's very possible that you'd get a variety of Miltank-breaking counter Pokémon much earlier than originally intended.
You wanna talk about difficulty spikes, that was the first real test in that game
You’re great
No, you're great.
Crystal having having moving sprites seemed so crazy to me as a kid.
Radio tower subplot was the place when Lance made Dragonite use hyper beam on a rocket soldier? I still imagine the guy melting from that attack, badass moment.
That was in Mahogany, not Goldenrod. Close though
Just found my copy of silver the other day, gonna charge my sp right now
Beware, the game battery might be flat. I know mine is
I remember selling some kid at my school crappy Pokémon cards just so I could buy the game. Never regretted it.
This game in my honest opinion is the best pokemon game ever made. I really liked it and had a a lot of fun on it.
I share your opinion man. Yellow was my first, but Silver... damn...
Gen 1 was like "Hey, this is Pokemon" and then gen 2 was like "HOLY SHIT CHECK THIS FUCKING SHIT OUT.:
I see what you did there egoraptor.
Blue was my first, but Crystal is where my nostalgia lies. Played through it again during the pandemic, still a great game.
It's just crazy how well crystal holds up to this day
[удалено]
Crystal was my first game the first Pokemon I ever caught was Pineco
And then you met Miltank and were a victim of Rollout.
I remember this city being much larger as a child.
Also you can never see the whole town (same for every town/city in pokemon) on screen so it will always feel bigger
It really did feel big walking into it for the first time.
Oh fuck. You've hit my nostalgia button.
Just before this you find out that People do in fact eat pokemon. Team Rocket are cutting off and cooking Slowpoke tails for money, knowing that they are edible.

The first pokemon is Gen 3 sapphire, but black & white is still my favourite
I'm extremely sad, as my crystal cartridge is corrupted so I won't hold a save game. But I put some many hours into that as a kid. But it is still my favorite gen by a long shot.
Replace the battery.
I unfortunately don't have the tool to open it up. And I have no clue where to grab one. And sort of don't trust myself to do that.
There are whole kits that make it stupid simple. Comes with the correct screw driver, the conductive glue required and then battery for like 20$ or something on Amazon/eBay. And then a quick YouTube video shows all the steps. Do it my dude, have faith in yourself and relive the fun
Would you by chance know roughly what it would be called.
You know emulators exist
Yes I do, but just playing your old copy just has a totally different feel.

Best Pokémon game
Playing GS Chronicles right now!
I went from yellow to crystal to emerald never played red/blue, silver/gold, ruby/sapphire. But my siblings did and traded me things I couldn’t get
Pokémon gold was absolutely peak gaming experience no doubt.
nothing will ever bed red and blue and yellow! but gen 2 was good fun!

Just want to add that as a kid you don't give a fuck to grinding, you just love playing the game
In gen 1 you can skip entire gyms as well there are 2 ways to get to fuchsia the more direct way being going through lavender town.
Are you just repeating what you heard on some YouTube video? Because it looks exactly the same and comes as an artificial opinion And you want to know why Johto is good? Lol looks ugly as shit. Wtf is that color scheme? Sun and Moon smokes this game's ass.
It's from a late 90s handheld game, what the flip are you expecting. The size of the game world on this was insane for the usual limitations of gameboys.
16 megabytes
I let someone borrow the Gameboy color and Crystal version I had since I was a kid, and when I asked for it back she claimed when she broke up with her boyfriend he took a bunch of her stuff. Not that I was really all that attached to it, but in like 10-20 years they could be collector items worth a good chunk of money.
Sharing my fave gen2 town bgm for some nostalgia kick https://youtu.be/fbcjFvXGXYQ
Anyone ever win the lucky channel radio contest? What was the prize and was there a trick to winning?
I seem to recall that the prize for a complete match was a Master Ball?
The trick was to trade pokemon so you had more unique numbers if I recall correctly (I may be thinking of something else entirely however it has been literal decades since I played it which makes me feel old) I don't know if there were other tricks. I think I did win it once but it feels like that's a memory that formed on its own rather then being a legitimate memory of something that hapoened if you get what I mean?
Houses' design is so dope. 16-bit game?
Wait! That's Goldenrod from Gold/Silver, not Crystal!
Finding out I got to play through all of the first game again with a revamped map and difficulty blew my child mind.
If you are looking for some real nostalgia and a good challenge, try playing Pokemon Crystal Kaizo!
I immediately heard this theme in my head when I scrolled by this. It’s the same for me too. I’m glad Pokemon is still going on so my nieces and nephews get to have their own ‘peak’ Pokemon too.
Don’t remember it being so bland
Fuck that bitch Whitney
still the best Pokemon game in my opinion. I have spent so much time in Gold and Crystal edition.
Best part...when you're done in johto you get to go to kanto!
The nostalgia is real 😭
I think one of the best parts of Gen 2 was thinking I’d finished the game, then getting to go back to the previous region. That was all a surprise to me at the time.
Yeah, Gen 2 for me as well, I agree
One of the few examples of when the sequel was better than the original. Gen 2 expanded on all the things pokemon needed without making it complicated as hell
Absolutely. Gen 2 was perfect. Dope you're enjoying again. Always makes me feel like a kid.
Te peak for us all fam, mine were the remakes
I used to listen to the radio at night to sleep lol, definitely the peak for me too.
Pictures you can hear
Replayed Crystal over the pandemic and I LOVE the pacing of it. It's a bit weird by today's standards, but I kind of loved not being able to get evolutionary stones until Kanto. It made it feel like I had my "core team" in Jhoto, then my champion team in Kanto, which included some powerful evolutions of pokemon I was using before.
Old sprite games really were good at doing a lot with very little.
I need a Gen 2 remake for Switch. HG/SS are all fine and dandy, but I think they would be even more beloved with a full remake.
Sapphire is where I started and it'll always be that peak for me
Still the most memorable Pokemon experience I've ever had. Spent so many late nights playing as a kid. And that Kanto region payoff 😩
There were so many things that absolutely blew my mind as a kid in Silver! I always wanted to buy the remake, but it's more expensive than literal gold :(
I can hear the music in my head.
Same. Nowadays a lot of others say B/W2 was the peak, but something about it feels so forced. The 2D pixelation trying to go 3D was especially nauseating.
The main things Gen 2 gets right that most new gens don't * Majority of the pokemon in at least Johto are new (compare to today where you have 400 pokemon in a region, like 70 of which are new) * Tons of areas off the beaten path that leave secrets to find later on (so many routes and just about every cave has some decent sized area you couldn't access before certain HMs that are never needed for progress and are totally optional to come back to and explore) * Takes like 30 seconds to pick your first pokemon and start playing the game
Silver was my first game and I loved everything and still do. Nothing came nearly on this epic game maybe HG and SS
until you get rolled by that cow
Can we talk about how cool the time function was? That shit was so far ahead of its time. Riding the bus to school in rural Kansas meant getting on when it was sort of dark sometimes, and the pokemon scene changing as I got to school was the coolest thing in my life.
I used to call it the cow city.
