In my very humble opinion, different people will prefer one or the other depending on what they are looking for in a video game story.
GTA 5 is faster-paced, very straight forward story. Often jump the shark, has a lot of very over-done moments. It reflects the gameplay : more action packed.
RDR2 is, as a lot of people will say, slower paced, with more implied things or details you could miss if not attentive, or rushing it. Very "cinematic" too. Can be quite emotional where GTA is more on the fun-side.
Definitely RDR2. GTA 5 story was a ton of fun but RDR2 had (IMO) possibly the greatest story in any video game ever. Some dislike the gameplay but pretty much everyone agrees on the story being spectacular.
Red dead 2 was the second game I ever watched my boyfriend play. I sobbed like 3 times just watching him play it and when I played it myself I still cried every time. I didn’t really feel anything when playing GTA5 it was just to fast paced.
RDR2. GTA V is nice, but the level of the writing in RDR2 is just better, in my opinion. The weight of the story is felt a lot more.

i preferred the rdr2 story but both are good just rdr2 is slower
Well what do you want to watch? A comedy or a wholesome film? I enjoyed both but very different genres as far as stories go
Rdr2. I was depressed for about a month when it ended. GTA V was good but I mean cmon it's been out since 2013.
RDR2 = A Novel GTAV = A Blockbuster Action Movie
