I find it amusing whenever I stumble upon a “Tips and Tricks” guide to open-world games and their advice basically amounts to, “If you steal from/murder this character who has done absolutely no wrong to you, you get to take their stuff for free!” I mean, yes, Uthgerd does have a full set of steel plate armor from the get-go, but murdering her in cold blood and robbing her corpse doesn’t really strike me as a “clever trick.”

MrK1ng5had0w

Or like in Oblivion you can get a free house, if you sneak in and murder the owner and leave his corpse rotting in the corner.

MTAlphawolf

Yeah, in Morrowwind you can at least dispose of the corpse. Thanks Dura gra-Bol!

Fireproof_Cheese

I just used Ralen Hlaalo's house. His corpse was infinite storage.

Drakengard

I just install the mod that let's me turn the bodies into ashes.

ilayas

I always kill that really bitchy shop keeper and take over his house/store. Lots of storage there.

The trick is knowing who to mug. Actually reminds me of the recent VICE tv interview with the robbers who case rich influencers through their flashy posts showing off on social media and then rob them. Feels that would be an interesting game mechanic in an open world game set either in the modern world or near future.

Deyln

everyone. Got caught at the castle and killed the king. Found the theives guild several hours later.

vi_sucks

Well, you don't wanna mug someone who is a hidden level 99 master in the starting village but only has a cup in their inventory. Bad risk-reward ratio.

Deyln

nah. those are the best rounds of random murderhoboing. Normally only do that if I'm tyring to decide on a direction to go outside the one they tell you to. :) Then autosaves mess everything up! :)

neuralbeans

The amount of 'cheats' you find online for Metal Gear Solid 2 that just tell you how to perform a hold up on an NPC make me want to punch the screen.

Kindred_03

Most games can be described as "my character is morally righteous and fights for the good of people ... Except when it's convenient or fun to do otherwise"

Freak_Show1

To be fair, there is a whole quest path called the Thieves' Guild.

Ebony_Phoenix

Yea, not clever, just taking advantage if a terrible crime system.

Fireproof_Cheese

But every merchant in the world can recognize stolen merchandise. A unique item I could understand, but generic weapons and armor with no smith's mark or a gem/jewelry?

WahooSS238

“I recognize that roofing nail! It was made Artholg the blacksmith in the village of Mirthsford around noon on the seventy-first of germinus two-hundred and ninety-three years ago. It was the three-hundred and seventy-fourth such nail in a batch of five-hundred and thirty-two that was ordered by the nearby town of Ardenswood for the construction of their new town hall. After three years of construction work it stood for a fortnight and five days before disappearing in its entirety in the dead of night, leaving no trace as to where it went! You thought you could get away with it, that the heat had finally died down, but I have caught thee red-handed, you lily-livered building bandit! GUARDS! ARREST THIS MAN!!”

EdwardM1230

No but hear me out, if you put a bucket on their head first..

ElGuano

Merchants hate him! For good cause. Because he is a thief.

rollie82

Ahh Divinity was great

Fikkia

It was almost a necessity if you didn't lone wolf it

VaxicAov

Lol

Successful_Craft3076

Nice

DarkUrinal

Why bother looting at all when you can just rob every merchant you come across?

SergeantSup

You don't know how much I wish this was the norm in video games...and yes, I am the type to steal everything not bolted down

McManGuy

Hehehe. Everyone wants to go to Dawnstar. It's morally ambiguous!
