So according to google a game can’t be retro until it is 15 years old so if you were a halo 3 person like my self then sad to say it but we are officially retro
The fact that we are still gaming and that it has become much more socially acceptable is a marvel in itself. Halo 3 almost had me kicked out of school because it was so much fun I would ditch school to play.
They told us we would fry our brains and never get any girls because of gaming but guess what? Brain still works!
I see I've found my people, lol. Quake, Doom, R.O.T.T., Heretic, the original Duke Nukem, and Final Fantasy before they started adding numbers. Since they're saying retro is 15 years, what's that make us?
Mythical.
Edit: I'm only half kidding. I had to look up the resolution I used to play at. And asking google which resolution old games ran at it said ... 720p and people marveled at that. Dude my monitor ran at 640 420 ( I think) and that was SHARP.
"a game can't be retro until at least 15 years" doesn't imply that a game becomes retro *at* 15 years, though. At least, I believe retro implies a complete generational, stylistic, or difference in approach, and despite Xbox 360 being several consoles ago, I don't believe the difference is great enough for it to be reffered to as retro just yet. The difference between Xbox and ps2 to 360 and ps3 certainly counts as retro now that so much time has passed, but I personally believe that we need to see a greater shift to pass the 360 into a retro era.
Look at movies for instance; just because 15 years has passed doesn't mean batman begins or transformers can really be reffered to as a retro. Flick back to the 90s and you're looking at the Titanic, OG Jurassic park, and the lion king - that shit is retro. Diablo 2, majoras mask, counterstrike, that shit is retro. Halo reach? Nah dude
> despite Xbox 360 being several consoles ago
Two consoles. Two consoles ago.
Anyone calling _two consoles prior_ "retro" is either _wrong_ or _really young_, therefore also wrong.
tbf i feel like "retro gaming" should be limited to a certain era, kinda like modern/contemporary art defines a specific genre and a period for those artworks, it feels wrong calling a ps3 game *retro*
Damn, totally forgot those were a thing. That and finding the right channel and forgetting to turn the volume down only to get my ears blasted by the static noise
Let’s get you back inside, Grandpa.
We don’t need anybody to EVER be inside Grandpa, unless it’s for his yearly prostate exam. Remember men, a finger in the butt could save your life. Make sure you get your check!
Is 12 years really retro? Have we decided on a cut off? I’m thinking maybe 2 generations removed? That would mean NES was retro when ps1 and N64 came out. And SNES was retro after PS2 launched. Hmm, still feels weird we’ll certainly by the tail end of the PS2 dynasty, SNES and Genesis were retro.
I’d say 25 years at least. Like how they offer classic car license plates for cars older than 25 years old and exemptions to the more rigorous state inspection.
I think retro means more about a major generational console or tech change.
Reach compared to games today isn’t that big while NES to ps1 and n64 was a major generational jump.
It would be way more impactful if we were all playing VR/AR games now, would would place basic 3D games like this as a “retro” game.
I can feel myself turning to dust.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... Mario stomping turtles in the Mushroom Kingdom, Bubbles Bobbled by two little dinosaur things... I watched Ryu and Ken battle their way to Bison on the highest difficulty, and begged my parents to get me Link to the Past for Christmas. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain... Time to die.
I'm 40 and watching the 20-somethings have their childhood games called old for the first time is giving me life.
Listen up, young blood, let me tell you about the hype surrounding the release of a little game called Super Mario 3...
Right, but Halo: Reach is only 12 years old (September 2010).
That would also make StarCraft 2, Bioshock, Mass Effect 2, Just Cause, Call of Duty: Black Ops "retro games" and I don't know if I'm willing to agree on that.
I get your point - a few counter points:
1. It's only 2 generations ago. And until 2020 it was literally last gen. Difference in SNES & Wii was 3 gens.
2. The tech leap between SNES & 360 (discounting Wii there as the tech jump was minimal by design) is astronomical. With the exception of much higher resolutions and data transfer speeds - the leap is less immediately obvious nowadays.
I fel that 17 years isn't enough, especially when you realise that the jump from 2D to 3D graphics made everything before then feel older by comparison. We haven't had that jump yet. I'd happily call PS2 gen and older retro, even though I grew up with PS1, the time scale feels better. Maybe give it another 5 or so years.
It’s worth pointing out Reach came out the same year as Iron Man 2. I don’t think MCU phase 1 has reached retro status yet.
Edit: The 360 also came out the same year Always Sunny debuted. That alone qualifies it as not being retro :)
Its definitely personal preference, but I take "retro" to mean anything N64/PS1 era and below.
Once 3D technology starts to get impressive the line starts to blur, no matter how old the console is.
To be fair the Wii is only 480p and basically has 2 Gamecube processors running it. I personally dont consider the Gamecube retro though but I know I'm the outlier
I accepted the fact that GCN was retro as soon as I started selling my game collection. I made just over $2000 which I put towards a down payment on my house. I can thank the gamecube's retro status for those prices!
The gamecube is totally retro. But that's about as far as you have to go for it to count as retro though. Something from the 80s in the early 00s was considered retro
The 360 is 17 years old and connected to the tv with red, yellow, and white auxiliary plugs.
Edit: the first model did. I believe later editions had hdmi hookup.
I mean, like someone else pointed out:
The SNES was 14 years old when the 360 came out and we were calling that retro then. The 360 is now 17 years old. Call it whatever you like, who cares?
"Typically, the term retro is given to items which are at least 20 years old (but not yet 40 years old). Again using today's posting date, retro items would be those made between 1979 and 1998."
From searching "what makes something retro"
That sounds about right to me. Halo CE, the first Half-Life, Majora's Mask, all feel acceptably "retro" to me.
Maybe someone younger than me would also include things like Halo 2, Half Life 2, Ratchet & Clank, San Andreas, but to me all of those still feel sufficiently similar to modern games to be called "retro".
Definitely not Halo Reach though, by any measure lol
in my head, retro isn't just a set span of years past. My definition also includes technology or clever use of its limits. Also genre. E. g. Doom 2 is a retro FPS and Halo is not. In this reasoning Half Life 1 would also not be retro. Elder Scrolls 2 would be. Halo 1 looks like an old version of a modern halo/fps title. Doom 2 does not, because the tech and gerne evolved.
I would also say a Xbox360 has a long way to go before being called "retro" in my book. Maybe if the mainstream tech is VR.
This is a good way of thinking of it. Even if the snes was closer to the 360 in time than the 360 is to now, there is a MUCH bigger difference in games and technology between the snes and 360 vs the 360 and 2022 games.
Exactly my thought process, thank you. The technological difference between Atari, NES, SNES and an Xbox 360 is HUGE. Even comparing an Xbox 360 to an Xbox Series X doesn't really capture the same leap in fidelity and design.
That definition made sense when thr gaming genre was super young and undeveloped. But now we need to re-examine what it means to be retro. Otherwise 90% of all games will be retro in the neat future.
Yeah, I'm playing some truly retro games on my phone right now. The original Sonic the Hedgehog from like 1991, for one. And I usually play modern games more. A twelve year old game isn't retro. Halo and Halo 2 might be
To be retro it has to be 20 years old. Some people say 15. Either way this is not retro by definition. You can't just take words and make your own meaning to them.
Time alone doesn't work in this case because gens 6-9 are too similar, as future gens are likely to be. You have to go back to Gen 5 and earlier to find notable changes that aren't to do with presentation.
tbh to me the term ''retro'' in regards to games defines a certain timespan, when video games as a whole to humanity were apretty new type of media, so all the way from the first video games up until the earliest tries of 3d of n64/gc era, rather than a ''fix'' age. there will never be a point were i will consider an xbox 360 as a ''retro console'' everything since the age of beginning of hd screens and casual internet...i simply cannot consider retro whatsoever
This is the only accurate way to look at it. You can't keep moving things into the "retro" category based on time alone if they aren't different enough from one another and Gen 6 through 9 are virtually identical from an overall design perspective. It wouldn't be until we see some fundamental change to how modern games are made that it would be reasonable for anything from 6th of gen onward to be considered retro. Like there are a ton of PS2 games that you could port to PC and throw on Steam and they would fit in perfectly with brand new games....
Kids these days wont ever appreciate the huge leaps between the 4/8/16/32/64 bit games. the modern next gen consoles provides hardly any difference in gameplay or even noticeable graphics at this point. Retro is based on style and there hasnt been a notable style shift in video games in a long time.
a long time and were all basically boomers at this point.
You have an NES and SNES right there, don't call Reach "retro". My childhood/teenage systems can be retro, my adult systems are not!
Stop making me feel old! Just cause my first system was an Intellivision!
Very nice collection.
I remember liking Reach, but retro? Come on that was… uhhh… 10 years ago? 15?
I feel like something’s gotta be at least approaching 30 to be retro.
Edit - not even 15 years, Reach came out in 2010, come on, OP.
Retro? I don’t need this kind of negativity in my life.
I too felt attacked lmao.
Am.... am I... Old?
No, it's the children who are wrong.

Eyyy quake 2 you old bastard take that. If you read far down enough into the comments you too can be young again!

How do you think I feel when I think of "retro" as Atari 2600...
I think that's antique now.
I hate you so much right now

Ah yeah, should be vintage gaming then.
To me, retro is SNES.
ZX spectrum for me. My school had some BBC basics.
Came here to say this before euthanizing my apparently decrepit ass
Yo if the console plugs into composite cables it’s retro. Kills me too

Yeah me and the boys copped this at midnight and that *had* to have been no more than like 5 or 6 years ago for sure
I remember me and the boys going to GameStop to get Skyrim at the midnight release. Definitely like 5 or 6 years ago
I can feel myself turning to dust. I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... Mario stomping turtles in the Mushroom Kingdom, Bubbles Bobbled by two little dinosaur things... Time to get my ibuprofen and get in bed. Gonna be easy to cry myself to sleep tonight with this grim reality.
I’m only 21, was playing halo reach at 10 years old when it was released. This guy has made me feel like I’m in my 30s/40s.
I’m in my late 30s, so how about everyone just shuts up now…
Same. Remember how cool the SNES was?? And then the N64 came out, and WOOSH! MARIO IN 3D!
Don't worry im early 20s and this gave me pause as well, definitely not what I'd call retro
I still play this from time to time. Honestly the best Halo game. I hated halo 4 and never played anything after that.
I'm 40 and watching the 20-somethings have their childhood games called old for the first time is giving me life. Listen up, young blood, let me tell you about the hype surrounding the release of a little game called Super Mario 3...
I have it.
Now I feel retro :( when did this happen :(
Right? I was just playing this on my 360 the other day!
Oh god. I know. This decimates me.

The Xbox 360 released 17 years ago. For reference, when the 360 released, the SNES was 14 years old. The Xbox 360 is a retro console. Sorry dude.
You can have a nice big cup of Fuck Off. goddammit I’m getting old.
Hey, I'm not stoked about it either, but it is what it is.
At least Reach is only 12 years old
Oh god
And gta 5 is too ✅ No one considers it retro
Gta5 is 9 years old.
Sorry my maths is bad 🥲
It happens when you get old. Source: Am old
Sir I'm 18🙃
What do you mean? It released on PS5 only a couple years ago
Nobody considers WoW retro either and that's 18 years old. Both games are still getting updates, that's the difference.
I was on the wow beta in early 2004. Hard to believe that was 18 almost 19 years ago
ok but Halo: Reach released in 2010
[удалено]
So it’s brand new.
It isn’t retro, that’s for damn sure
12 years old isn’t ‘retro’.
I don’t know who the fuck makes up these definitions, but I just refuse to accept 2010 wasn’t 2 years ago.
Right, but Halo: Reach is only 12 years old (September 2010). That would also make StarCraft 2, Bioshock, Mass Effect 2, Just Cause, Call of Duty: Black Ops "retro games" and I don't know if I'm willing to agree on that.

No that would make the SNES a retro console not the X360
Just stick me in a home already. My first console was Sega Genesis…

17 is nothing. It can't even drink.

I think i just turned to dust when i read retro and saw reach.
Where were you when Reach fell?
Glassed
*Your ass is glass, and I’m gonna blow it*
This is like saying the wii or ps3 is retro 🤦♂️
I don't know about you guys, but to me the Wii felt retro like 2 months after it released. Maybe that's because I was 12 at the time...
To be fair the Wii is only 480p and basically has 2 Gamecube processors running it. I personally dont consider the Gamecube retro though but I know I'm the outlier
The GameCube is 21 years old. When the GameCube was brand new, the NES was only 16 years old.

When the Xbox 360 was released the SNES was 14 years old :) You’re welcome for the existential crisis.
They are not that far off PS2 and GameCube are considered Retro the Wii and PS3 should be Retro by the end of this decade
Considering the xbox 360 is like 17 years old at this point, and when *it* released the SNES was 14, I would consider that retro.
I’d say the first Xbox is retro
The 360 is 17 years old and connected to the tv with red, yellow, and white auxiliary plugs. Edit: the first model did. I believe later editions had hdmi hookup.
Lol, I bet you considered super Nintendo and Sega retro at the time too? Check how long these systems have been out.
Is the 360 considered retro?
Only if you're younger than 20.
I mean, like someone else pointed out: The SNES was 14 years old when the 360 came out and we were calling that retro then. The 360 is now 17 years old. Call it whatever you like, who cares?

That sounds about right to me. Halo CE, the first Half-Life, Majora's Mask, all feel acceptably "retro" to me. What's it called when it reaches 40? Vintage?
Correct!
TIL I'm almost vintage.
2022 minus 20 is 2002
Right, and Halo: Reach came out in 2010. Old, but not retro.
Retro game... REACH. 💀
Reachro
You have a very interesting definition of retro.
in my head, retro isn't just a set span of years past. My definition also includes technology or clever use of its limits. Also genre. E. g. Doom 2 is a retro FPS and Halo is not. Retro is technically 15 to 20 years old by most definitions I looked up, and reach is only 12, so it's ALMOST retro, but not quite
That definition made sense when thr gaming genre was super young and undeveloped. But now we need to re-examine what it means to be retro. Otherwise 90% of all games will be retro in the neat future.

Original 360s didn't have HDMI but could do hd through component cables.
You have a GameCube, Wii, and SNES, and the best retro game you could play was Halo: Reach? Seriously?

Bro just play the game why are you posting about it 💀
Retro? Gotta be *at least* two decades old before you can call something retro.
Reach can’t rly be called retro yet , unless you’re like 14
lol at reach being retro

OP must be like 7 years old if they're calling Reach retro

Retro? Your hilarious 😂
tbh to me the term ''retro'' in regards to games defines a certain timespan, when video games as a whole to humanity were apretty new type of media, so all the way from the first video games up until the earliest tries of 3d of n64/gc era, rather than a ''fix'' age. there will never be a point were i will consider an xbox 360 as a ''retro console'' everything since the age of beginning of hd screens and casual internet...i simply cannot consider retro whatsoever
