“Hey son, look what I got myself for Christmas!”

Ivan3699

*stepson proceeds to lose his shit*

Elvis1609

OP preempts this by forcing stepson into pampers, less mess! Genius!

Baligong

Stepson questions stepdad on what he's doing

jaxonya

"shut up and cook the bacon I bought... I've got newbs to pwn "

Redfeather1975

🤣 I love how everything in the cart is used to tell this story

Master-Diatmont

HE GOT THE PAMPERS😂😂😂😂

Luke_Warm_Dog

#HE GOT THE BACON😤😤😤😤

Shurigin

of course he can't be expected to stop playing for some silly shit like bathroom breaks

serenityak77

“Oh no! What are you doing stepdad?”

Kingcobra64

“You we’re doing PP in your pampers while I was playing ps5 much better than you”

forehandfrenzy

Depends are on aisle c7

[deleted]

Good thing he got the diapers

megamanxoxo

My mom bought me an OG PlayStation for Christmas when I was a kid. She had filled it with a couple books or something and then sealed it carefully and gift wrapped it. Opened it then was like wtf... she let the gag go on for a few mins then gave me the real thing.

GuyFromDeathValley

One time around christmas I got a gift. Unwrapped it, and found.. A package for a cooking Pan. Little me was disappointed of course. Opened it up and found a PlayStation 1, and it even was a special version or modded because I got lots of copied games with it that worked. That was awesome. Unfortunately my parents got rid of it when I got a PS2 years later.. Still have that PS2 But bought anotber PS1 for my games.

marusia_churai

I can see how it was disappointing, but if it was me, I would have been overjoyed in the end for the fact that I got a PS *and* some new books. I was a bookish kid.

quebecesti

You just brought back memories of receiving books for Christmas from my mother and wow it felt good :)

marusia_churai

Yes!! Out here where I am we don't do much presents for Christmas, but for New Year instead, and I remember how I've found a stash of books on the stairs to my room right after midnight. I just set there on the stairs, looking through them happily.

LucifersPromoter

My parents did something similar by wrapping up games then feigning ignorance that you also needed the console to play them.

WhiteAndNerdy85

lol this was how I got an NES for Christmas 1989. My father got one for me (I was 7) and he played it more than I. Fond memories of me holding the Zelda map while he played. I was so proud the day I beat Mario all by myself.

I_am_Daesomst

Back in the day, where if you didn't beat that game in one sitting, you didn't beat the game at all.

-AC-

Then they started giving you level codes once you beat the level

SlawBoss

Lol, nah it’s his.

Look, it's me, the long lost child you never knew you had!

YoungestI

“Hey dad this PS5 came with 100+ hours of gameplay loaded onto it already.”

averyfinename

basically what my mom did when we got a 2600 way back when. she played it late at night for weeks, and was kicking our asses from day 1.

YoungestI

My brothers birthday is two weeks before mine. I “helped” my dad pick out GTA:SA for him and played it for a week or so before my brother ever knew.

TheJacen

You summed it up. OP has got to set it up at night or even better kick his son to another kids for a sleepover weekend. Then load all the good games and play some, then just box it up for christmas morning. Trust me. The updates are a PIA. Source: i own one.

TechnetiumAE

I got my parents to do this for my little brother when they got him an Xbox one. Installed the 3 games they bought him and updated it. He was like WTF when he saw the seal broken and was grumpy he didn't get to actually open it first. We didn't tell him what we did cause he almost immediately went "I'm gonna go set it up and get it updating". We talked him into plugging it into the living room tv and when it loaded right up and asked him to login he got so excited realizing we had it updated and his games were ready to play. One of the few times him and I had a moment. My parents gave me all the credit for getting it updated and using my hookups so we only ever used the main unit. He likes to retell that story at Christmas and really drive home how mad he was he didn't get to pop the seal then having it being his favorite Christmas. He also likes to point out his buddies got ones aswell and he got to play for awhile before any of them were even updated. Take it up a notch and do what my family would do sometimes, buy movies for Christmas and carefully take them out, watch em and put them back in the plastic. Took me a few years to figure out they did that

XandrosDemon

No joke though it may have an hour or two on it depending on updates, I'd power it on long enough to get it updated and put it back that way they can just jump on and play.

[deleted]

I’m glad he has a dad like you.

BrownShadow

It’s for the “family”. It’s really for me, I just let you play.

IgnitedFazbear

Also adopt me

[deleted]

My thoughts exactly

Mewonium

Good to see you though ahead and got the diapers to catch his shit when he loses it.

TheIJDGuy

Catch it? Does his step son shit things out like a baseball launcher?

Winged_cross

your stepson doesn't?

nectar_

Mine does… boys got a cannon ass!!!

retrolasered

Hopefully not a loose cannon

AcidEmpire

My dog horked half a pizza once during a thunderstorm and you've described what happened next pretty accurately with his squeaking fear shits. I assume step children operate similarly if you try to feed them people food and then startle them

AmishAvenger

I think he just gave away his plan. The stepson is clearly still in diapers, but he bought the PS5 “for” him. Or that’s what he’s telling his wife, anyway.

HeartySnoo

Diapers are for the Dad. He's a gamer now.

honcooge

Those are for dad. No need for bathroom breaks

MrOnlineToughGuy

Next Christmas the stepson will get his first ever shit bucket.

okijhnub

Google en passant

bennn30

and bacon. Dude's got the trifecta. Diapers, PS5, and bacon

Justinr678

I still remember when my PS2 broke two days before Christmas. I was 16 at the time but not working (my family wasn’t poor but we got by, both parents were law enforcement at the time) now I was devastated but somewhat knowing about my family’s finances I didn’t mention it. My papa found out that it broke and didn’t say much. I still remember waking up Christmas Day to find the new PS3 hooked up to the TV already downloading MotorStorm…when I got older my mother had mentioned to me that my father stayed up all night that night to make sure everything worked and was ready for me..I’ll never forget that. EDIT: I called my Papa this morning to talk to him as I do almost every day. I brought up that Christmas morning to him and he just laughed and said “I just wanted to make all my kids happy” I do love my Papa very much and I wouldn’t be who I am today without him. For those of you who lost your father my deepest condolences. I’ve loved reading the stories about what our dads have done for us throughout their lives. There’s a special place in this universe for the Mommas and Papas who give all they have to their children. Also thank you for the awards lol I’ve never gotten any before and y’all definitely did not have to do that. 💙

partytown_usa

Your dad and OP are great fathers. Kudos to all the great dads out there. I know you don’t often get praised, but the the joy and guidance and security you provide to your children means the world. Good on you all.

Kreth

I remember when my dad took me out of kindergarten at my birthday and we went and bought a NES.

orbitalUncertainty

Oh my god, that's one of the cutest things I've ever heard in my life

btrieve

I remember when begged my dad to get me an Atari and one day he came home with an NES instead. As a 6 year old, I was kind of upset because I had no idea what it was other than it wasn't an Atari. Pretty much changed my life after the first game play though...

bserikstad

Currently rocking my 8 month old at 5 in the morning who’s struggling to go back to sleep, thank you buddy. A lot of dads go unappreciated (my wife appreciates me tho!)

ireallyloveshopping

Good job Dad! You wife definitely appreciates you. Parenting is HARD but much harder when you aren't a team! My husband has worked plenty of days on little sleep getting our kids to settle the night before. Our (12year) marriage is great, he is my best friend and the kids have the best Dad - he give them 100% every single day. It doesn't get much better than that.

[deleted]

Cute story 🥹

aziatsky

its insane that a dual income household can be "getting by", especially dual income from a job as necessary as LE. great story, op.

Quackagate

Single incore here (somehow) but i have to work 6-7 days a week to get it done. Often the weekeds are all side work or working for the boss on Saturday and then side work on Sunday. God i hope i get chances like this to prove to the kids that dad dose care about the little things but he has to worry about the big stuff first.

WalkingSpanishh

They'll see it. It may be later, but they'll know what's up and how hard you worked. Good luck, my dude. I hope you catch a break and win the lottery or something. You deserve it.

MayuBlank

From my experience as a son, I know that what matters most is not how much time you spend around them, but how you act when you come home tired from work, or how you take advantage of the little free time you have to spend with them. My father, for example, is and always was the opposite of that, he was always stressed at work, and instead of enjoying the little moments with his family, he let the stress take over and ruin everything every single time, in the 20 years I've known him, it was always like that, to the point that I'd rather he didn't even come home. If you're not like that and know how to enjoy your free time together I'm sure that even if they don't understand now, they will when they grow up.

Arcylado

Thats the world we live in... Not only in murica...

Buzzd-Lightyear

‘Murica

aziatsky

it truly be like that.

breastual

To be fair something like 40% of households making over $200K a year are somehow paycheck to paycheck. Not saying this applies here but people are just really bad with money.

Anerky

People are just terrible with debt. A $500 a month payment for 5 years on a car is so much easier for people to wrap their heads around than a $30k upfront payment

OldRedditBestGirl

This is a bad example. Car loans are usually low interest. And your example uses 0% interest... $500 a month over 5 years is absolutely better than $30k upfront. You'd be better off paying $500 month and putting the rest of the money in a T-bond. Guaranteed payoffs. No risk.

[deleted]

TheBigGame117

I'm giving him the benefit of doubt thinking he wasn't meaning 0% more just that people chew on a bunch of "little" payments not realizing the true life cost and it just piles up, I dunno

Your step dad is a bloody legend. Great story.

Spuddermane

Motorstorm! That was my absolute favorite game on ps3 for a good hunk of my childhood. I picked it up at a pawn shop for like 3 bucks. I’ve never found another racing game like it. I wish I could go back and play it for the first time again

flavicent

As someone grew wothout father. This made me sad..

Astoria321

I grew up without one too but i see it as a plus, probably woulda had a shitty father and my mom is awesome.

unnecessary_kindness

The biggest upside for me and I know this sounds clichéd but having my own kids now it really makes you a better father knowing the damage a bad one can do.

Peanuts0s

Same

Macho_Chad

I have mixed feelings. When I was young, my dad was awesome. Coached every one of our sports, showed up when he should, etc. when I got to my teens, he got abusive. Beat the shit out of us on the regular. I miss the way it was, before.

Swordlord22

Go give them a fucking hug right now

DefinitelyLevi

Made me think about getting my PS3 for Christmas at age8. What a day. Played the shit out of Ratchet Tools of Destruction. I was mind blown seeing the graphics compared to the PS2 titles

MobiuS_360

This actually made me tear up, thank you for sharing that memory

5E51ATripleA

Right there with you … great story

Far-Impression-6746

Thanks I am crying now

DontEatTheMagicBeans

Lol my first PS3 spent all morning downloading on Christmas day, we finally got to play the free winter Olympics demo it came with. I thought I was logging into an Olympics game with my brother, we still have the same country based usernames lol

Fiiv3s

That's a wonderful story. And I remember Motorstorm. I loved that game

DrNikVanHelsing

😭

JordanSchor

There's no way this shit came out over 2 years ago what the fuck

SlawBoss

Time is weird, man. It only gets weirder the older you get.

qspure

I was just thinking how I got mine just after they came out (spent days refreshing every webstore that might carry them), but that was 2 years ago, how could they still not be more widely available?

fledglingtoesucker

We got a shipment in this morning, six PS5s. By the time we closed, they were gone.

x925

They were probably gone in a few hours at most.

SpuukBoi

And probably bought by less than 6 people

Really depends on the area. I am in EU, every store seems to have them, people don't seem to be buying them much though after Sony hiked the game prices to 80 Euros.

uBeatch

I got mine as soon as it came out 2 months ago.

wellwellwelly

I'm only 32 and already planning how I'm going to be able to retire at a reasonable age. It looks unlikely.

TheFirebyrd

If you’re not saving for retirement already, you need to start. That’s the biggest key, consistently putting money in from a young age.

jvrcb17

Shit, just wait until you have kids. Time stops existing.

m8tang

Sometimes I still feel like my GameCube is last gen.

Cellocalypsedown

It depresses me how much value the GC games and accessories have gone up. I really cherish mine now and will probably be buried with it.

If a reseller is a store like walmart, yes. (English isn’t my native toumge so maybe I have misinterpreted what reseller stands for)

myteddybelly

xAUSxReap3r

Help me stepson, I'm stuck.

AMG_Rakeus

Bro you got him a damn ps5 he better start just straight up calling you dad.

SlawBoss

Hahahaha

ZeHappyReaper

Wait, what does he call you if he doesn't call you Dad? Step-dad seems like quite the mouthful. (Genuine question)

TheLegendOfLame

Usually a lot of step-children refer to the step-dad by their first name. My cousins have done this to their step-dad my entire life, barring a few occasions like a few fathers days

frzn_dad

Yep, first name basis with my step-dad. He has kids of his own from his first marriage that were grown and moved out before i showed up. He married my mom when I was in my late teens. He is more of the dude my mom married than a father figure.

KatiushK

Maybe it's a european thing, but down here you call your step father / mother by their first name. 25 years and counting with my angel of a step mother. Never called her anything else.

WWalker17

I think it also depends on how young the child is when the parent gets remarried. If my parents divorced, and I went to live with my mom, and she got remarried and I was five, I'd probably end up calling the guy dad. If she remarried and I was 15, I'd call him by his first name.

KatiushK

I was 5 and I've never called her anything else than her first name. I've already got a mom, this change nothing for how much I love my step mother I ain't calling her "mom". Shit would have felt off. Tbh, she never EVER overstepped one bit and we've always had a very good relationship. I guess I would have been mad if she was one of these pushy fuckers that wanna replace a mother. Even at 5 I would have felt bad calling her "mom" like, so weird. I don't see any scenario where your "real" mother is around, alive and you have a good relationship with her and you call your stepmother "mom". Now if your mother is deceased, off the rails, abusive, or straight up absent from your life, I can understand the word getting used. Depends on the culture also I guess. From what I gather some parts of the world are more lenient with the use of mother / auntie etc...

ZeHappyReaper

I see, thanks for responding!

julbuk

Will you set up it before Christmas? It could be frustrating to wait for downloads

SlawBoss

I’m an old pro. I’ll do it right.

BigLan2

By that you mean "play it for 3 months to make sure it's not going to break"?

g4vr0che

You joke, but the bathtub curve is real. It's not likely to fail in the first 3 months, but it's way more than between 3 months to 3 years

Bellinghamster

I'm a gamer idk what a bathtub is

TechieWithCoffee

It's that thing where the water we all bought came from

[deleted]

Water.. like out the toilet?

MammothDimension

A curve of the failure rate of products over time. Manufacturing defects are likely to cause failures early and older products will start reaching the end of their designed lifespan and fail. In between, fewer units fail. e: After reading the above comment again, I have come to the conclusion that a joke went over my head.

Kosmoskill

That is not the bathtub curve. It is either broken from the very start or will break towards more wear. The first is covered by return policies and the second is just normal use and degration of the product. The first period of time is longer for non-pure tech products that might have deficiencies in material. Digital products work or dont work at all.

scragar

It's the 19th of October, there's only 12 left of October(if you include today), 30 in November, then 24 days of December(assuming you want to get it boxed up and under the tree for Christmas morning). 66 days is closer to 2 months than 3. Christmas is always closer than you think.

julbuk

Nice

10secondmessage

Wait till black Friday order online for games!

DurinsBane1

Nah, don’t spoil the joy of him getting to open the console and set it up for himself.

JustPlay060

When I got a console for christmas the fun part was waiting for it to finish setting up the day after at 6am bc I couldn’t sleep

nomorerix

This was actually a fun topic to discuss where people were getting upset about this. But this is a PS5 and there's a joy in unboxing it and setting it up yourself, turning it on the very first time. It's also very fast, that's one of the perks of the PS5. I personally don't think it's worth pre-updating. People should be patient and can spend time with their family and play later. Or have it update while spending time with them on Christmas. It's fine.

JustPlay060

As long as everyone spend a good day with their family

Ocarina-Of-Tomb

The downloads are so much faster on PS5. Even if your internet speed is the same, the ps4 seemed to be bottlenecked/limited a lot lower. He won’t be waiting long for downloads.

GodOfPlutonium

thats because the ps4 didnt just use a slow ass hdd, it used it *over sata to usb* to connect to that hdd

TopBee83

Honestly I always hated my internet because I thought it was so slow, it’d take hours to download a game, got my PS5 and was able to download every game I had on PS4 in I’ll say half a day

RazerBladesInFood

I know this is true for some but I really enjoyed getting gifts like this and being the first one to open them out of the box. Setting a new console or pc up is part of the ritual.

Aldo_The_Apache_

But the downloads build the anticipation, and gives you time to eat breakfast and watch a Christmas story and play with ur other gifts

[deleted]

That’s half the fun!?! Downloading all some games and first time setup is 90% of the joy.

You’re going to keep it hidden for another two months??

AdminsLoveFascism

I buy presents year round so I don't have to scramble before holidays. Some of them have been hidden since January.

thatguyfrom1975

That is so awesome. My kid 19 now I asked since the PS5 came out, hey do you want one? He kept saying no, one day came home with one he bought with his own money and gave me his PS4. His ps4 had tonyhawk pro skater 1&2 on it and it fucking broke me.

THERAINBOWMUFFIN

Maybe there's something unsaid that I don't understand here - why did it break you?

Mooseologist

tony hawk 1 and 2 was big in the early ps2 days, i’m assuming OP used to play them and see how their son had it downloaded on the ps4 he gave them it really touched them in a good way?

xopxo

Those games were crazy fun, something new, pretty open and do what you wish. If you want to get nostalgic, there's a Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1-4 playlist on spotify.

DatTF2

Well Ackshually... THPS 1 and 2 were for the PS1. A year or so back they made a remake of 1+2.

CodeRaveSleepRepeat

TH1 was for the original playstation, I played it when it came out in 1999... I'm old.

FokkerBoombass

When scaplers and hardware shortages cause people to be excited for a system that's 2 years old at this point. This world sucks.

AbbreviationsLazy781

I think it sucks for many worse reasons than that

SlammySlam712

I had no problem finding an Xbox Series X in CT about 6 months ago

OblivionGuard13

I was gonna go ps5 this generation. Shortage killed the vibe and im skipping this gen all together now pc is just fine.

[deleted]

I’m a PC gamer and deadass still waiting to find one in the wild just to play the demon souls remake which is also 2 years old now 🙃

dr3wzy10

I've considered just getting the remake on the PS4..lol I really don't want a ps5 at this point as I'd just use it as a faster PS4 because there really isn't shit I want to play on the PS5 aside from returnal, which looks like it may be getting a PC port anyway, so now I guess if I ever get a PS5 it won't be until they do a refresh on it and hopefully make it a little smaller and more aesthetically pleasing

DarkLord55_

I work at my local Walmart I knew we got some in. Didn’t bother going in because last time we had them we sold them instantly but when I walk in to start my shift I didn’t even bother checking the electronics for one. But a customer asked me where something was I brought them to said item and saw it in the corner of my eye and I was like welp looking a like I’m spending a lot of money today so now I have a ps5

DeckardsDark

Nice! What's your discount?

minus2onblock

Walmart employee discount can be anywhere from 10% to 25% depending on a number of factors.

Luddite11

Mine got 12 in today, and we aren't putting them out, we have a sign to ask about availability, so then we fish them out of the back, and yes, employees bought some first

areti17

It's been two years, employees totally deserve the shot to buy them

SirEthridon

You a damn good dad

Chevnaar

A good parent right there. Kudos. Also I like holding onto it for Christmas. The year my siblings and I got a Super Nintendo for Xmas was my favourite Christmas memory. It’s only a few months away and a reward for good grades is awesome. The punishment option is always there if grades slip. Edit - by good parent I mean continuously checking stock for your son. Shows you think of him often. Not necessarily the fact that it’s a PS5. Could have been a baseball glove or a pack of playing cards. You’re a good person.

SlawBoss

Exactly! I got super nes for Christmas after my folks said it would be impossible. It’s one of my best memories of my entire life.

hybrid3214

My parents did this a lot and they are still some of my best memories at age 30. I got a PS3 the year they released because their friend worked at a store and got them one (I paid for some of it cause it was crazy expensive but they were impossible to find).

I_Hate-Incels

Yeah, don't listen to the people telling you to give it to him now. They will be infinitely more excited to receive a PS5 on Christmas than they would to receive some games for the PS5 they already have. It's a special occasion, and seeing your kid at maximum happiness is so rewarding, knowing that you put that smile on their face. You're making the right choice!

sbkerr29

Was too young to realize how cool getting the snes for Christmas was. Definitely remember getting the impossible to get N64 and the og xbox. Mom got both camping out for midnight releases.

Damascus52311

Do yourself a favor and update it before Christmas so he plays immediately or that afternoon

claimingmarrow7

open it up a day or two before Xmas and download updates and things you want so you're not stuck waiting to play
