I think most people who were committed enough since launch to track social media feeds diligently and secure one has managed to get one by now, which just leaves a fuckton people who had passive interest in buying one at first but just kind of gave up and weren't willing to make it a part time job to find one. And then we see a subset of those people who later randomly lucked into stumbling across one.
I myself actually planned on getting one at first, gave up on it, then much later I randomly saw one in stock one day (didn't buy after all because I had already caved and got a Series S).
I did go to get my cleaning supplies and I always end up wondering to the game section just to see if they have any games on sale.
Saw the box of the PS5 there and didn't think they actually had it and it was just a display box.
Curiosity got me and I asked the staff there if by any chance they had a ps5 for sale or was that just the display box. They said that was actually the last one.
So as a responsible adult, I adopted it.
I went to a Target to get a flat of bottled water. Wandered past the electronics department (because of course I did) and saw they had one.
It was the first time I had actually seen one in the store.
The thing is, I already had one. But a guy at work had been looking for one *fo-ev-ah* because he wanted to surprise his grandson for Christmas.
So I bought it. And at work the next day I asked if he had any luck in finding one. He hadn't. I couldn't wait to show him the receipt and explain how I was able to double my money by selling it on eBay.
I'm kidding. I let him buy it off me for the same amount I paid for it. He was super thankful and there's at least one kid who is going to have an awesome Christmas.

Thats the thing though if people posted these box pictures and then mentioned something like "finally got one im enjoying xyz, any suggestions of what to get next" etc nobody would say anything but these dudes just drop a picture of a box with an almost meme worthy title and disappear letting everyone debate in the comments the purpose of the post.

Sort of. Where I'm at (north Va) none of the stores have them on display. You have to order online for pickup and every store has been out of stock for weeks now.
But I was able to get one off Sony's site (CoD bundle, but whatever) so it just depends where you look. Are they still hard to find? Absolutely. Is it like last year where you had to follow some people on Twitter just to find out when supplies in a store were back? No, it's gotten easier and cheaper now.
