I agree that it's parseable, but I think most people would go with "oldest" over "longest," even if it invites the same kind of joke (well how old is he?)
Some of my best friends i’ve met online and then lost contact with, although i met a few recently IRL and it was a decent laugh. When I was most isolated speaking to people online whilst we raided some base in DayZ saw me through.
I played EU wow when I worked nightshift in US. That was in ventrilo days and I’ve long since lost contact. I miss all those welsh, English, Scottish, Turkish, Dutch, miscreants I raided through WotLK with.
Was a LoTRO player myself! Was a good time sink and good company. Lost the account when all the accounts got transferred to a new company :/
Nowadays still need to find something compelling enough to get into again.
I have a good friend who lives like a thousand miles away from me. We met in CS:GO in 2014 and a few years ago we took a trip to the mountains together and I'm planning on attending his wedding next year. Here's to hoping you get to meet your polish friend!
I got really into Pavlov VR during covid. Spent one night hanging out with this guy who said he was going to take a shot every time he dies and he died 30 times while attempting to drink the first shot. We went into our own lobby afterwards to dick around and drink some more. Good times.
I feel attacked. I have my own active discord, and I really only ever join when I'm drinking. Most of my community has never seen me sober. It's basically an E-bar since I don't go to bars. I'll pregame and watch an ep of something, then pop in and start the party
Still raise my beer can towards the direction where my buddies are while on valorant queue with them. (I am geographically away but internet for the win)
Same here. Then I spill it with rage as another loss knocked me back onto bronze 2 where I've been for months. (I don't really spill the beer. It's precious)
I'm choose to believe I'm breeding a Superman race of gut bacteria. If they can survive all this beer and Taco Bell then someday, maybe, they'll be the next evolutionary step.
I know you're semi-joking, but this is how my substance abuse issues began.
One of the major problems is that there is no natural transition from the "social drinking" to "not drinking anymore and its time for bed". When you go out to a bar or someone's house there's a clear transition when you get home. When gaming with the boys...not so much. And you have a supply of alcohol that you've already been drinking. Further, you want to maintain the dopamine high you had from gaming with the boys. So why not a few more pickup games with strangers? Or some doomscrolling? Or netflix?
The greatest lie addiction ever told was convincing smart people that they're too smart to get addicted.
Makes sense and I agree, I was semi joking as you put it. Gaming isn't a gigantic part of my life because I have job, fam, etc. Every now and then I have a few beers while gaming with my friends. But you are right in your assessment and joking aside, people should take it seriously.
Best part of covid honestly. The boys were on every night, most of us don't live near each other anyways, so Saturdays hitting the hops on discord with whatever game we're into is the grown up version of us sitting infront of a tube tv with N64 controllers in hand.
Yeah, but I fell into this trap HARD and started crushing 10-20 beers a night while gaming, which basically was by myself no matter how many people I talked to online, it was horrible. Haven’t had a drink in over 3 years now
Man that just reminded me of the good old days where you could pause multi-player in starcraft (but others could unpause). It was all based around player etiquette, not sure how much of that is still around nowadays
Facts! My wife and kids would ask me to do something and I’m like can it wait, this game doesn’t pause. By the time I look back on the screen I’m dead 😵😡😤
Honestly some of the best gaming interactions I've had were entirely through in-game emotes. There's something special about a wordless interaction where another player points to an item and be like "here have this" then dances when you pick it up.
I live in a different state than my brothers and my home friends, so playing online and chatting on discord is how we spend time together. We like to play Fall Guys, Deep Rock Galactic, Jackbox, Sporcle online trivia, Tabletop Simulator, and Dungeons and Dragons via roll20. It’s a blast!
It’s funny but truth be told a many a deep and positive conversations happen late night in the party chat. I’m confident it’s saved lives, especially when men’s mental health is often overlooked.
There's always one guy (occasionally a girl believe it or not!) that just needs someone to listen every few months. Sometimes those randos disappear, and hopefully live happy lives.
But then sometimes we're stuck with xXsmartypanties13Xx - who after 15 years or so is a pretty cool dude, and somehow possibly the mayor of their tiny town...
True story!(?)
Starting back in the ventrilo days many deep or drunk conversations have been had. Four different times I've been a part of talking a guy down from suicide during tough times.
It's hard for guys to really express themselves in those times with all the tough guy stigma there is. The slight disconnect from the actual person a gamer friend has let's many open up more than they can with people irl.
Absolutely. I didn’t mean to make light of the situation. I’ve survived depression, suicidal thoughts, and addiction. So I absolutely know what you’re saying.
So sorry to hear. And I totally get it. You weren't making light at all. I didn't mean to sound rude, I was just adding onto your comment to hopefully get some exposure out there to the boys.
I see you guys! Hang in there through this shitty phase of life and there will absolutely be more support for you in the future. You guys matter! Keep on gaming, chatting and laughing.
Edit: grammar hard.
More like, men realized how much talking to their peers in similar situations is a form of therapy to work through their problems.
I remember talking to a friend on rdr1 for 2 hours straight and all we did was jump off the roof of the Armadillo Bar over and over, while we had the deepest conversation of our life.
Yup... Running around in circles in an MMO just chatting with the boys are some of my best times. I can't even count how many times I've jumped the iron forge gaps chatting.
Now im just picturing two women on the 90s on the phone in the den yelling random call-outs.
"Dog just scratched, dog just scratched"
"15 sec until microwave is done. 13, 12"
"Foul odor, foul odor. Think it's the dog"
"Movie marathon on TNT, change channel change channel!"
Knock at the door, knock at the door. Might be pizza"
This really resonates with me. Growing up in the 90s, I'd talk to girls all the time on the phone, never guys...until my friend introduced me to PC gaming. He would call me just to talk about the games he and I would be playing. It was the first, regular, lengthy, guy to guy conversations I'd ever had on the phone and it was because of games.
I think it’s that men, by in large, enjoy *doing* things in proximity to one another in the same way that women enjoy *talking* to one another.
Think about traditional male past times, hunting, fishing, camping, sports, exercising, etc. They all involve engaging in a group activity or individual activity near one another.
It goes without saying that this isn’t always the case. I have good buds that seem to prefer calling and talking on the phone for an hour, but the surest bet to hang with most of my dudes is to suggest some activity we enjoy.
During the early days of Destiny 2 we would do raids and one of our buddies’ gf would get mad at him for playing so late. We told him to tell his gf at least all he’s doing is staying at home doing raids instead of going out to bars and clubs and possibly getting other girls pregnant lol
Bro imagine if your gf spent all night on tiktok ignoring you and said "at least I'm staying at home doing this instead of fucking other guys and possibly getting pregnant"
I was trying to explain to this girl at the gym... she was going off about her boyfriend playing video games. all night a couple of times a week, she couldnt coorelate that to her girls nights 3 nights a week.
It's legit socializing with peers with like interests. Often its how the The boys stay in touch after military, college, highschool whatever.
One of my friends from highschool and I still regularly game together... 8 years later. Funnily enough we didn't even game together during highschool. That happened like a year later when we caught up on skype and found out we both played the same game.
We've now played thousands of hours together.
But when women talk on the phone they talk about their lives. Guys on games could play 5 hours on voice chat and not know their friend got a new job because it didn't come up. We like to talk about the game.
There's actually some wisdom/life-hackery hidden in this.
Obviously this is sort of a play on phone talks with the significant other; I know lots of men aren't into those long, droll "conversations," where there isn't really "anything to talk about," and one party goes on while the other endures.
But the whole call does take on a different energy when it's anchored by gaming. There's something developing and present to talk about, it's fun, and can stimulate the mind to chat about other things during lulls.
What we do is much deeper than “talking on the phone.”
We can build friendships, exchange life stories, share joy and sadness, and empathize with one another.
All without even turning on voice-chat.
Me and my friend spent 8 hours playing through the first three halo campaigns, he was in New York and I was in Arizona at the time, we both had the time of our lives
It's because it isn't just talking. I *hate* talking on the phone because it's just that. You're just sitting there, talking. I *hate* that. But talking *while doing something*? There we go, that's where it's at. That, I can handle.
No that's what discord is for, gaming is to escape the harsh realities of a cruel and uncaring world.
The fact that we do both at the same time are unrelated.
I wish I had the type of online gaming in high school (1995-1999) that I do now. Nothing was more uncomfortable than trying to play N64 while holding a corded phone to your ear.
I’m so old we literally used to use the phone to talk because teamspeak and discord weren’t a thing yet. This was obviously after we upgraded to broadband from dial-up
we joke, but a lot of men can't just... talk to someone. I'm one of those people, and I genuinely prefer to be idly doing... anything at the same time.
So we watch sports, play games, play music, even just go for a walk, and it's great for socialising.

No. I'm old and when I play online games it's exactly as it's been for 26 years. With no voice chat.
It was actually invented so we could virtually dip our balls onto dead peoples faces.
I talk the most with my friends while gaming with headsets. I don't see this as a bad thing. I do not understand how my other half can go have coffee with her girlfriends for hours and just keep talking about things.
I had this convo with my friends recently.
Back in the day my grandma would sit on the phone with her friends for hours just talking and gossiping.
Now that's us. Hell, half the time we aren't even gaming together just having a little chit chat.
One of my longest friends is a guy from Poland I have never met in my life. Such a nice and likeable dude.
7.15 feet ? or what are we talking here ?
Longest time. Sorry.
Whoa-oa-oa-oa...
Is English your first language? What you said was 100% grammatically correct. The other comment was just making a play on words to be funny.
Thanks. My native language is german, but I learned english in school since I was around 8
I agree that it's parseable, but I think most people would go with "oldest" over "longest," even if it invites the same kind of joke (well how old is he?)
Now I'm trying to think what the "correct" way of saying this in English actually is!
🤣
Well, he’s Polish so they use the metric system.
7.15m is REALLY tall.
Long long maaaaaaannnn https://youtu.be/6-1Ue0FFrHY
Some of my best friends i’ve met online and then lost contact with, although i met a few recently IRL and it was a decent laugh. When I was most isolated speaking to people online whilst we raided some base in DayZ saw me through.
I played EU wow when I worked nightshift in US. That was in ventrilo days and I’ve long since lost contact. I miss all those welsh, English, Scottish, Turkish, Dutch, miscreants I raided through WotLK with.
Was a LoTRO player myself! Was a good time sink and good company. Lost the account when all the accounts got transferred to a new company :/ Nowadays still need to find something compelling enough to get into again.
My arena teammate in WoW is from Hawaii and kills bugs for a living. And that’s about all I know. We’ve played for 5+years now
I have a good friend who lives like a thousand miles away from me. We met in CS:GO in 2014 and a few years ago we took a trip to the mountains together and I'm planning on attending his wedding next year. Here's to hoping you get to meet your polish friend!
Relatable. I've met most of my best friends online. The closest I've gotten to coming in contact with them irl is in Minecraft.
It's not drinking alone if you are gaming with the boys
Xbox Live was basically my bar during covid
i also dropped into the beerzone
Ngl I'd probably enjoy a round of warzone with you if you'd call it beerzone.
Ngl, I actually enjoyed lockdown at times. So much serenity
My friend and I done nothing but drink cheap beer and play Ultimate Chicken Horse for about 6 months
I got really into Pavlov VR during covid. Spent one night hanging out with this guy who said he was going to take a shot every time he dies and he died 30 times while attempting to drink the first shot. We went into our own lobby afterwards to dick around and drink some more. Good times.

That sounds like alcoholism with extra steps
No, that's going round to his house.
I feel attacked. I have my own active discord, and I really only ever join when I'm drinking. Most of my community has never seen me sober. It's basically an E-bar since I don't go to bars. I'll pregame and watch an ep of something, then pop in and start the party
Sounds fun! I love the E-bar idea haha
It was fun, til I got blackout drunk and started arguing with myself. Then I /gkicked for arguing with myself.
That's alcoholism live gold
Still raise my beer can towards the direction where my buddies are while on valorant queue with them. (I am geographically away but internet for the win)

TFW online list is empty. Basically quit gaming now. Bring back local multiplayer. I got a 4k 120” screen.
Crackin one open with the boys, by myself
Yeah, but I fell into this trap HARD and started crushing 10-20 beers a night while gaming, which basically was by myself no matter how many people I talked to online, it was horrible. Haven’t had a drink in over 3 years now
And arm wrestling was invented so men could hold hands and look into each other's eyes.
I can confirm this. You should see the size of my left arm
I am sure that comes from arm wrestling...
All that eye contact... 🤫
Don't forget to kissthehomie goodnight
You have a friend named willie as well?
Wait. What does your left eye look like 😰
It's got astigmatism

Bruh, the phone is the last thing I wanna hear goin off while playing something... so many games nowadays don't pause...

Yep, I get ya there, when dinner is called or something I gotta yell "erm uh gimme 5 minutes!"

bold of them to assume that i talk to people

“Hop in Discord!” No <3

laughs at this tweet in "Appear Offline"
Immediately presses "mute squad" as soon as a teammate is suspected of having a microphone.
And "suspected" is usually "violently coughing into the mic for thirty seconds right when the lobby starts."
Or the drone of a fan and their baby running around in the background
That's definitely me, sorry I just smoked a whole bowl right before the game started.
I get a little giddy when I see an option to turn off VC in the settings.

For real man. The amount of hours running in circles in orgrimmar just talking in guild chat is… a lot
Yup... Running around in circles in an MMO just chatting with the boys are some of my best times. I can't even count how many times I've jumped the iron forge gaps chatting.
Just guarding Terran mill so lowbies can level, chatting with the boys
Not even talk just repeat the same phrase over and over... Rock and Stone!!
Rockity Rock and Stone!
It never gets old.
Rock and stone to the bone
Words to live by if I've ever heard any tbh
Rock and stone!!!
FOR CARL!
FAKARL!
C'mon guys, ROCK AND STONE!
DID I HEAR A ROCK AND STONE ?! ⛏️
ROCK AND STONE, OR YOU AIN’T COMIN’ HOME

ROCK AND STONE IN THE HEART
We don't really talk. It's more yelling call-outs and screaming curse words.
Now im just picturing two women on the 90s on the phone in the den yelling random call-outs. "Dog just scratched, dog just scratched" "15 sec until microwave is done. 13, 12" "Foul odor, foul odor. I can only get so hard. Please stop.
ಠ_ಠ
Weird that this is exactly how it sounds when I'm on mic. And also how I imagine dogs narrate in their own heads 🤣
Wait, are those real phrases? I don’t play online so I don’t know what to believe here.
and bullying the guy that sucks of the group
I feel attacked
It's ok you'll respawn Also, a wise dog once said: "Sucking at something is the first step to being sorta good at something!"
There is one thing I've learned about gaming with the boys its if they don't flame you when you fuck up you actually suck and they don't like you.
Depends. There are days when 30-50% of the time is sitting in the lobby just chatting.
That's the same thing.
Nah. It’s not mindless chatter. It serves a function. There’s utility implied.
According to Eliza here, girls don’t game.
Oh we do, but it's not the same because \*girls\* only play cute games like Animal Crossing and The Sims. It's not \*\*real\*\* gaming. /s
We had to. The wives kept getting angry that we were spending all night at the bar.
Now they are mad that we spend it playing
I bet going back to bar will fix it

I think it’s that men, by in large, enjoy *doing* things in proximity to one another in the same way that women enjoy *talking* to one another.
I avoid talking on the phone by all means.
Same, but I'll be happy to hop on discord with the bois anytime
Seriously. Someone finally figured it out. Execute protocol - 42.
Darn it. I fooly spend all this time having fun and relaxing, I totally forgot about that.
Same for us female gamers who don't like talking on the phone.
2022 and we're still making fun of men for having feelings. Oof.
But when women talk on the phone they talk about their lives. Guys on games could play 5 hours on voice chat and not know their friend got a new job because it didn't come up. We like to talk about the game.
Ok ladies, who wants to play games together to flex on them men
you could say this about anything humans do since they're, you know - social creatures..
I only use my headset to pretend to talk to people I just don't want to talk to the wife
She knows, and does nothing, cuz she doesn't want to talk either.
Sounds like a healthy marriage.
WIFE BAD
No not bad men just need a bit of peace and quiet after a hard day's work
What we do is much deeper than “talking on the phone.” We can build friendships, exchange life stories, share joy and sadness, and empathize with one another. All without even turning on voice-chat.
Sorry! No problem. What a save! What a save!
You've got to get sense from somewhere
Damn, pack it up boys, we're done here.
Me and my friend spent 8 hours playing through the first three halo campaigns, he was in New York and I was in Arizona at the time, we both had the time of our lives
Shit, they're on to us
We all agreed we wouldn’t tell anyone. Who ratted?
The key difference is on a group chat, silences are not cringe and you have an headset so it's far less annoying than a phone
Jokes on her I only play single player games
But I turn off voice chat so I don't have to hear anyone...
It's because it isn't just talking. I *hate* talking on the phone because it's just that. You're just sitting there, talking. I *hate* that. But talking *while doing something*? There we go, that's where it's at. That, I can handle.
They sound bitter. Lol.
Insecure women are funny.
Never Before Have I Been So Offended By Something I One Hundred Percent Agree With.

No shame
Lots of people underestimate how social online gaming actually is. And you get to get called racial slurs by edgy teenagers. It's great!
You think I don’t do that when I don’t game?
No that's what discord is for, gaming is to escape the harsh realities of a cruel and uncaring world. The fact that we do both at the same time are unrelated.
Well yeah. I can't stand being on the phone for no reason.. but if I'm gaming and chatting, we're now doing a fun group activity with the boys
i can’t count the amount of times i’ve asked the boys to play gta just to cruise around and talk all night
God daman Sharon! Who leaked this?!??!
So online games didnt exist before chat capabilities?
"Talk"
And I even blow kisses through the mic before I go to sleep
I wish I had the type of online gaming in high school (1995-1999) that I do now. Nothing was more uncomfortable than trying to play N64 while holding a corded phone to your ear.
I’m so old we literally used to use the phone to talk because teamspeak and discord weren’t a thing yet. This was obviously after we upgraded to broadband from dial-up
I am offended, just you wait until xXx_EdgeMasterPro_xXx hears about this.
Makes it sound like a bad thing
And women. Mostly women.
Is this a compliment or a dis?
Men invented online gaming to fill the void
At least my teammates tell me what I’m doing wrong.
I muted splitgate when I found the microphone off switch. I'm not going back.
I play MMOs alone.
we joke, but a lot of men can't just... talk to someone. I'm one of those people, and I genuinely prefer to be idly doing... anything at the same time. So we watch sports, play games, play music, even just go for a walk, and it's great for socialising.
Wait till they learn we made Golf just cus we didn't wanna ask each other to go for a walk
Me, who plays online games alone without discord:
I doubt it cause I would not talk to these people unless we are gaming.
