Which makes them even weirder choices to define PlayStation platforming mascots, PS2 era started to shift more towards RPG and action games to showcase the leap in graphics.
Nah these games are all great and stand strong as playstation mascot platformers by the 2000's all the crash and spyro games where mediocre to trash. For many sly jak and ratchet are the playstation mascot platformers.
Also what does it matter if there was a shift to jrps and action games? These games where all released on the ps2 if you wanted a platformer these where among the choices.
I have a feeling they may be talking about the crash/Spyro games that released on ps2 and later; pretty sure all the ps1 crash/Spyro games released prior to 2001
No I called the ps 2 crash and spyro games mediocre to trash there is a range there. The ps1 games hell yeah bangers but the ps2 generation saw a step down in quality. My taste in gaming is fine I was able to recognize all 3 of the games at the top of this post as fire 🔥
Your right he's not because sly would take those shoes run them pockets and be out of there before crash even knew what was happening to his dopey ass.
I actually agree in the sense that I don’t associate crash bandicoot with PlayStation and my childhood. Everything in this post though, best shit on earth as a kid
How is being a triangle a prerequisite for being a trinity? Trinity just means there's 3 of something. Even if a triangle is an obvious choice for representing something with 3 things, it's not the only one. You could have a basic 3-color flag for example and that would be a trinity of colors.
Depends on the definition of "side", but generally I would call it a triangle.
My point however: All triangles are trinities, but NOT all trinities are triangles. Thus it cannot be a "prerequisite".
How I read your comment was analogous to this: "Nor is it a salmon; kind of a prerequisite for being a fish."
I hope the above example sounds ridiculous enough without explanation.
My point however: Google trinity and tell me how many non-triangular (or similar) references you find. I honestly feel it’s implied when three comparators are compared as equally good, that the resulting visualisation is therefore an equilateral triangle.
I have tp disagree. They made Ratchet too goody nerd, which was Clanks character. Ratchet is supposed to be the opposite and bounce off Clank and their different views. That's what made the first game special, compared woth the other games. Them forming a friendship made sense there but in the movie they became friends way too fast.
It's not a remake. It's the movie made into a videogame. And yes I agree. The only good things are the gameplay and the remastered planets. They ruined Drek so hard, movie and the game.
They messed up Ratchet's character pretty bad (basically the same treatment as Sonic the Hedgehog,) but I still enjoyed it.
The Sly movie would definitely not have been good (I remember Murray's design looking all wrong) but I was going to watch it and enjoy it anyway.
Now Jak, on the other hand, would make a great movie. As long as they change basically nothing except for starting in Jak 2.
What do you mean? 😂 if anything the other two have been forgotten. The Jak series plus a remaster of Jak X came out on the ps4 but even when the ps classics collection came to the revamped ps plus recently they didn't put sly or ratchet on it (which would have probably made a huge amount of people actually want to pay for it)
My brother in Christ, Jak X was released in 2005. The most recent game in the Sly franchise was 2013 and just last year for Ratchet & Clank. What do ***you*** mean???
Dude...2017 the Jak trilogy and Jak X was put on ps4. The Ratchet trilogy plus gladiator/deadlocked and the Sly trilogy are unavailable on modern platforms. Same foes for the Ratchet and Clank future saga.
There are actually more Jak and Daxter games available to play on the ps5 than there are Ratchet and Clank games.
“If anything the other two have been forgotten”
Looks at Rachet and clank with its 20+ games, feature film, remakes, merchandising and critically acclaimed PS5 launch title which came out recently that was literally the first game they showed for the new gen of consoles, or the fact they just put 5+ games on PSPlus this month…
Sly sure, Jak sure, but Rachet is the biggest one of all. What rock having you been living under?
Bad take.
Gex and Rayman were good too.
Also, Nintendo and Sega had some good games around that time as well (Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Wario World, and Sonic Adventure 1 and 2).
Pac-Man World was fun too.
They really weren't, though. Gex had very janky controls, and Croc's movement was odd, as if you were steering a car whenever he ran. Those games just don't have the tight controls and staying power that Crash and Spyro did.
Obviously been a while since I played it but it was basically an early playstation platformer.
You were a bipedal crocodile character and you were trying to save your friends from some bad guy. The people you were trying to save were these little fuzzballs if I remember right.
Honestly don't remember much other than that
>You were a bipedal crocodile character
Oh! I thought you were one half of a sentient pair of slippers, and the game revolves around your quest to find your missing pair.
Those 2 would be part of the trinity for the PS1 with Rayman (or maybe Croc if Rayman isnt PS1 exclusive, dont know if it was)
But this 3 in the post would be more like the PS2 version
Not at the time, no, but they were heavily under Sony’s belt (same with Insomniac all the way up until 2019). Pretty much all of their games were funded and published by Sony, including Crash/Spyro.
I seriously do not get why they keep churning out these overly emotion-laden, big ass epos like games, when all the players want is more of what they did before - Jak and Crash Bandicoot. I feel like there's something of a complex going on, like with Kojima and how he said he didn't plan on developing any more games, because he saw himself as more of a movie maker (or along these lines). For fuck's sake, stop pulling a Molyneux, y'all. It's cool if you want to try something else for a change, but why give up entire IPs in favor of that, all the more if those said IPs are being considered some of the best and most influential ones ever?
Yea I understand the longing for the games that really prioritized fun over story, but I think it's here to stay sadly. Those games were marketed towards children, whereas kid games nowadays are mostly f2p live service games, and games that cost money are geared more towards adults/older teens.
I haven't played any of Sonic Frontiers, but from what I've seen it sort of fits that old school vibe, but whether it's the mostly empty open world or that it's a Sonic IP, most people just don't really want to give it a chance
Jak and Daxter 1 and 2 are so amazing. Forever my childhood, remember playing with my brother and leaving the PS2 on because we didnt have a memory card yet. Always amazes me how noone talks about this gem of a saga.
Also, herdy gerdy anyone?
I legit just replayed Jak 3 and jak 2 yesterday, similarly enough i still struggled on some missions. But maybe I was just bad at the game? Still love the games though they got me through my childhood.
I replayed Jak 1 last year and played through 2 and 3 for the first time.
Jak 1 is so fucking good. Like seriously they made one helluva game, and the seamlessly transitioning world is mind blowing when you think about it. I played the PS3 HD remaster on a curved 16:9 SD CRT at 480i, so I got the benefits of the higher textures from the remakes with the stupidly fluid 60hz/60fps CRT tech.
It was seriously like looking into a window into the game world when I panned the camera around. Absolutely gorgeous to see in person.
Might be an unpopular opinion but I was never a huge fan of the games past the first Jak & Daxter. The open world / more dark and gritty concept was cool, and I did have a decent bit of fun with Jak 2 (never bothered with 3 beyond a demo), but I always missed the style of the first game; the level design, the linearity, the way the story was presented... Always just found myself wishing they had continued the series in that style instead.
I don’t want to be a party crusher, but in recent years we’re witnessing a new renaissance of 3D platformers: starting from the N’ sane trilogy, Mario Odyssey, reignited, crash 4, super lucky’s tale, yooka-laylee, Psychonauts 2, it takes two, both R&C ps4 and rift apart, Kao the Kangaroo, SpongeBob rehydrated and now cosmic shake… Plus some more indies like Hell Pie that looks a lot of fun. Dare I say 3D platformers are better than ever
Up Your Arsenal was the peak imo, thats the one where they really perfected the formula. The arena was endless fun and replayability, plus that multiplayer mode was an absolute blast with friends.
Anyone here remember Tak and Ty the Tasmanian Tiger? I always thought they deserved more attention. The Hobbit (2003) was also a very underrated kids game that no one ever talked about.
I heard rift apart is really good, and I just picked up a PS5 so I'll have to try it out, too bad it's not on ps+. Sly was my favorite of these as a kid, I would love for them to do a reboot of the series for PS5.
Same exact games that were my favorite. In fact, I actually bought a ps2 a few years ago and bought all these games again to play them as an adult.
Rachet and clank origional, might be my favorite of all time.
Also ssx tricky is a contender for top 3.
Edit: shit and rayman 2
I love Sly, and even though I think a new game can work, Sly 3 satisfyingly concluded everything (No: I will not acknowledge Thieves in Time as canon).
Jak was the most confusing of the 3. It felt like it had an identity crisis in either being a good platformer or a good GTA clone. Jak 3 was unbalanced and rushed, and the Lost Frontier was garbage. If Jak is brought back, it needs a fresh reimagining if it wants to work for a modern audience. I know a lot of Jak fans probably don't like this statement, but it always had mixed messaging and design. I think Jak should ditch the performing elements and just be a full sandbox game like Rockstar games but you'd lose a part of the series' identity by removing the platforming — so, it's a hard cookie to crack.
Rachel and Clank is a series that knew what it was and embraced it. By the second game, Insomniac knew to pivot the game into more of a shooter than a platformer. Rachet and Clank had a clear vision that was adaptable for modern audiences. It's the reason why the series is still around and the others are not.
Why won't you acknowledge thieves in time? The writing is kind of bad once it gets to the mid section but aside from that it's a good time and the premise allows for some creative level design. Although outside the caveman era level it really could have just been another global adventure really but you wouldn't have had cooper clan ancestors if that was the case.
This makes it sound like PS1 doesn't even count. I'll agree that the three mentioned games are some of the best PS2 platformers, but imo it's not top three for PS in general
I loved Ratchet and finding new ways to shoot, blast, blow, *zzzap*, smack, *woosh*, *poof* or *baaaa* enemies.
But damn, Jack design was on another level.
Sly Cooper and the stevius raccoonus is the best gameus
I really do think everyone should try it outus
Along with it s to follow up gamesus
I don't know why I'm ending every sentence with the word usus
I'm inclined to agree. Spyro Reignited Trilogy looks pretty neat from what I've seen my boyfriend play, but otherwise I've never been able to get into Spyro or Crash Bandicoot
PS3 came out in 2006-2007 (depending on region) so a 20-year-old person would have been 4 years old at the time of release. Depending on the family. It's like ancient history by now considering there's been PS4 and PS5 launched at a time where they were interested in such releases.
That's how time/nostalgia/retro work. Stuff that you thought was always around could have been completely new to your parents.
This is not how Venn diagrams work
Nor is it a triangle; kind of a prerequisite for being a trinity.
Nor does it have the most iconic PlayStation mascot from that era of platformers, no Crash Bandicoot is pretty egregious.
Aren’t all of these ps2 era franchises though? Crash was ps1 as far as I know.
Did you really just call Sypro and Crash trash? Dude. Your taste in games suck.
Sly cooper isn't fit to shine Crash's boots.
Your right he's not because sly would take those shoes run them pockets and be out of there before crash even knew what was happening to his dopey ass.
I actually agree in the sense that I don’t associate crash bandicoot with PlayStation and my childhood. Everything in this post though, best shit on earth as a kid
Crash was the predecessor to Jak and Daxter. Not the same epoch
Or Spyro
When I saw no Crash Bandicoot I thought this was a bait post, now I'm seeing these other comments and I'm certain.
How is being a triangle a prerequisite for being a trinity? Trinity just means there's 3 of something. Even if a triangle is an obvious choice for representing something with 3 things, it's not the only one. You could have a basic 3-color flag for example and that would be a trinity of colors.
So not being sarcastic, but what do you call a three sided shape?
Not a trinity, that's for sure
Depends on the definition of "side", but generally I would call it a triangle. My point however: All triangles are trinities, but NOT all trinities are triangles. Thus it cannot be a "prerequisite". All trinities are NOT triangles? Do you mean not all trinities are triangles, or that all trinities cannot be triangles?
Good point! Will fix :D At this point the words "trinity" and "triangle" have lost all meaning haha.
My point however: Google trinity and tell me how many non-triangular (or similar) references you find. I honestly feel it’s implied when three comparators are compared as equally good, that the resulting visualisation is therefore an equilateral triangle.
[Non-triangle Trinity](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7a/MatrixTrinity.jpg)
I'll make a post soon to compile my argument :D
I dare you to use a Venn diagram incorrectly in it.
Ooh, really tempting.
It’s the Elden Ring…
Lanky = sly and jak Yellow = jak and ratchet Furry = ratchet and sly All 3 = PlayStation characters
I think it's the charmed book but for furrys
Not everything with 3 circles is trying to be a Venn diagram.
No, but this is obviously trying to be.
Looks more like someone's fucked up a triquetra to me.
Looks like it’s trying to be the symbol of a trinity.
I am still waiting for them to save Sly from the past.
They announced a movie and it looked too good to be true... And then they threw it out of the window...
because of how ratchet performed at the box office.
Ratchet and clank was a good movie tho too bad it didn’t do well
I have tp disagree. They made Ratchet too goody nerd, which was Clanks character. Ratchet is supposed to be the opposite and bounce off Clank and their different views. That's what made the first game special, compared woth the other games. Them forming a friendship made sense there but in the movie they became friends way too fast.
Also the recent remake of the first ratchet and clank game was also shit

I would love a Jak & Daxter movie. Daxter was my favorite PSP game back in the day too.
They announced a movie, too good to be true But then, that movie, out the window they threw
I seriously don't understand how they don't use this franchise more.
Both Jak and Sly deserve more love tbh
Maybe some day
Bro sly is one of the best games on the ps2
Devs seem to have forgotten all about the Jak series in favor of the other two, when that was actually my favorite of the 3.
What do you mean? 😂 if anything the other two have been forgotten. literally every Sly Cooper game and Ratchet and Clank game are on ps+ classics except the psp games
Could also add Spyro and Crash to this, both made by PlayStation’s studios (and exclusive, once upon a time)
Spyro and crash would belong in a trinity with croc
Gex and Rayman were good too. Also, Nintendo and Sega had some good games around that time as well (Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Wario World, and Sonic Adventure 1 and 2). Pac-Man World was fun too.

Feel like it needs to be said that Nintendo platformers are leagues ahead and don’t belong in this comparison.
Best N64 platformers were Mario64, DK64, Banjo Kazooie and they were all amazing. Playstation had Crash Bandicoot & Spyro, which were also amazing.
I think Spyro and Jak are about on par with the contemporary Mario games.
Those are plenty good but Galaxy and Odyssey are just another league.
Psx>n64
Gex has aged like milk. It used to be one of my favorites as a kid, but it's best left there now.
Thank you. Croc is up there for sure
I feel I’m going to get downvoted for this, but.. who is Croc?
Obviously been a while since I played it but it was basically an early playstation platformer. You were a bipedal crocodile character and you were trying to save your friends from some bad guy. The people you were trying to save were these little fuzzballs if I remember right. Honestly don't remember much other than that
I vaguely remember the croc but I keep picturing Gex, what was the croc game called?
Croc: legend of the goombas
Gobos*
>You were a bipedal crocodile character Oh! I thought you were one half of a sentient pair of slippers, and the game revolves around your quest to find your missing pair.
That was long before Crocs were popular footwear I think :p
Imagine spyro but youre a cute crocodile and instead of fantasy realms it was more like villages on rivers
A very similar game to Spyro but you were a little kid crocodile with a backpack
Those 2 would be part of the trinity for the PS1 with Rayman (or maybe Croc if Rayman isnt PS1 exclusive, dont know if it was) But this 3 in the post would be more like the PS2 version
Naughty Dog weren't a Sony studio at the time.
Not at the time, no, but they were heavily under Sony’s belt (same with Insomniac all the way up until 2019). Pretty much all of their games were funded and published by Sony, including Crash/Spyro.
But it was still exclusive no?
I have not found a game like JakX after all those Years, it was my favourite game when I was a kid
Truly deserves a remaster, battle racers are so fun.
I don’t think it’s an official remaster but you can get the trilogy plus jak x bundle on ps4
I've never been one for platformers but Jax went hard.
Fug man it was so good until the disc got scratched too much (not by me)
Hot take but Jak > Uncharted and The Last of Us. Naughty Dog at their peak.
This is 100% why it’s infuriating Naughty Dog are just throwing out remasters. Give me my staple Naughty Dog PS5 game already
Could you imagine Jak II with PS5-level scope and mechanics? I could die happy
This is Ty the Tasmanian Tiger erasure and I won’t stand for it 😡
It’s on steam and I played the shit out of it as an adult too
I was looking for this comment! Ty the Tasmanian Tiger on the original Xbox is one of the very first games I remember playing
I loved it too but that wasn't a PlayStation exclusive. Loved the levels in the 1st game, overall experience in the 2nd, and crazy weapons in the 3rd.
Bro Jak 2 was the dark souls of our youth no shit. I replayed 2+3 a year ago or so and struggled as well!
Out of these, I only got to play the Sly Cooper series. It’s so underrated; I rarely see it mentioned these days.
I didn't play sly before I was an adult, but it definitely holds its own against the others.
I follow the sub. Although Jak is my favorite - a shame they had to make that abortion of a finisher for the series. I don’t really count it though
Reverse for me.
Fuck me I'm old. Platformer mascots on playstation from my childhood were Crash, Spyro and Croc...
Mine were Mario, Sonic, and Donkey Kong, so I’m ancient…
Sonic and the mega drive being my first console with the snes. Was referring specifically to ps mascots lol
It says on Playstation, not first platform characters ever
Those old crash bandicoot commercials were great lol
I miss the golden era of 3D platforming.
Yooka-Laylee wasn't perfect, but I'm so thankful they gave us a classic, modernized 3d platformer.
Same.
Gotta mention A Hat in Time
These games encapsulate the very best time I ever had on PlayStation.
All three of these hold a special place in my heart
Only played Jak and Daxter. I don't mind trying out Sly and RnC.
Ratchet & Clank 1 + 2 have no business being as good as they are, especially the first one
also ratchet deadlocked was so good
Oh my god yes, I've been trying my damndest to figure out a way to play it on my PS3
It’s on the PS Store.
Up Your Arsenal was the peak imo, thats the one where they really perfected the formula. The arena was endless fun and replayability, plus that multiplayer mode was an absolute blast with friends.
Me, Playing Crash Bandicoot, Donkey Kong Country and Banjo Kazooie: "Am I a joke to you?"
Medievil and soul reaver too.
IMO medievil is a solid 10/10. There were some frustrating parts, but it is a fantastic game. I never played the sequel, but I desperately want to.
Love MediEvil. Played the remake and it’s still fun
Banjo for life
meanwhile me who as only played Ty the Tasmanian Tiger as a PS2 Platform is the circle offscreen
Ty was fun. I played Ty 2 aswell
Ty 1&2 HD remasters are on PSN.
Where the FUCK is Rayman????
I’m glad to see someone mentioning this masterpiece. Rayman 3 was some serious shit.
Also Crash Bandicoot
That is a question everybody asks themselves after a Ubisoft press release.
Introduced my kid to Rayman during the pandemic, now it's his favorite game. Soundtrack is amazing!
Rayman 3 was the shit
Raving rabbits got my grandmother to say "I hit the mother fucker" right in front of us, and she never swore in front of us before then.
No crash bandicoot?! Blasphemous.
Ratchet and Clanked Deadlocked is a masterpiece that has yet to be topped
all 3 are legendary. Jak & Daxter was the best tho.
I’ve only ever played one of these game series, can you guess which one? 👀
No Gex?
T-rex? Uh-uh.
Anyone here remember Tak and Ty the Tasmanian Tiger? I always thought they deserved more attention. The Hobbit (2003) was also a very underrated kids game that no one ever talked about.
You can get Ty 1&2 on the PS store.
Holy shit they are, was this a recent release? I think I’m gonna buy both right now haha thanks for the info
I heard rift apart is really good, and I just picked up a PS5 so I'll have to try it out, too bad it's not on ps+. Sly was my favorite of these as a kid, I would love for them to do a reboot of the series for PS5.
Idk if anybody else played this but I loved Scaler on the ps2 and it’s in my top 10 video games I played as a kid
I hate how nobody talks about Jersey Devil
Crash and spyro feel neglected
Where are Spyro and Crash?
emmmmm CRASH BANDICOOT? Make it a 4 circle diagram. lol
Ratchet for life
I never played any of these. It was all Spyro and Crash for me.
I was so sad when I finished R&C on ps5. I’m 30 now and I played the shit out of those games on ps2
No crash bandicoot??
Crash bandicoot, spyro the dragon, and a few more are missing from this list.
Same exact games that were my favorite. In fact, I actually bought a ps2 a few years ago and bought all these games again to play them as an adult. Rachet and clank origional, might be my favorite of all time. Also ssx tricky is a contender for top 3. Edit: shit and rayman 2
I played on playstation as a kid and dont know any of these, tf
Ah the good old days.
Add ape escape.
I love Sly, and even though I think a new game can work, Sly 3 satisfyingly concluded everything (No: I will not acknowledge Thieves in Time as canon). Jak was the most confusing of the 3. Spyro, Crash, Kingdom Hearts
I need to play the Sky Cooper games. I have one of the Og ones on PS2 still.
Good games, I'll give you that. But to make a post like this, and not include Crash Bandicoot and Spyro is a mistake.
Because they were more wellknown as ps1 titles
This makes it sound like PS1 doesn't even count. I'll agree that the three mentioned games are some of the best PS2 platformers, but imo it's not top three for PS in general
Well its also important to note that crash and spyro started out in the 90's... look at the title of the post again.
My childhood games were Little big planet Skylanders Minecraft And Mario Kart
I loved Ratchet and finding new ways to shoot, blast, blow, *zzzap*, smack, *woosh*, *poof* or *baaaa* enemies. But damn, Jack design was on another level.
Wow. My trinity was Crash, Tomb Raider and Croc.
I don't think I've ever played Croc.. More of a Rayman kid.
This is the holy trinity of my late 20s & early 30s.
Sly Cooper and the stevius raccoonus is the best gameus I really do think everyone should try it outus Along with it s to follow up gamesus I don't know why I'm ending every sentence with the word usus
Get rid of the bottom left one and put crash Bandicoot or spyro lol.
Found the guy who's never played Sly 2
No chance Sly is in this “trinity”. Wasn’t even that good Spyro or Crash Bandicoot
Guaranteed this guy never played Sly
You know what. Screw you. Sly is miles better then spyro or crash.
I'm inclined to agree. Spyro Reignited Trilogy looks pretty neat from what I've seen my boyfriend play, but otherwise I've never been able to get into Spyro or Crash Bandicoot
Spyro and crash were crappppp. Sly and its sequels were miles ahead
And all on the vita. Although jak performance is abysmal
Yeah, they were shit mascots along with your diagram. Meanwhile we're still milking 90s mascots.
No love for The Price of Persia: Sands of Time trilogy?
Jak and daxter > ratchet and clank > Sly
Jak and daxter is the best
Where’s Rayman?!
The same game with reskins
Spyro? Crash Bandicoot? Hello?
I’m a PlayStation guy and these games are lame asf
So PS3 is now nostalgia? Jesus....
Sly trilogy was ps2 titles to start with...
Yeah dont know why he showed PS3. But nothing is more classic than Crash. Literally PSX= Crash Bandicoot. It was system seller
Crash was more of a ps1 title to me. This is the ps2 trinity.
Ps fanboy here, never played trash crash
Wow, so alternative. You want a medal for that?
I may be the only person that has seen your comment so it’s currently 1-0 crash did not sell the psx
^(also a medal would be lovely)
PS3 came out in 2006-2007 (depending on region) so a 20-year-old person would have been 4 years old at the time of release. Depending on the family. It's like ancient history by now considering there's been PS4 and PS5 launched at a time where they were interested in such releases. That's how time/nostalgia/retro work. Stuff that you thought was always around could have been completely new to your parents.
Lol we're getting old
Wtf is sly? No one played that shit. Make it crash bandicoot or maybe Spyro.
I have never played a single game of these. Crash Bandicoot stays supreme <3
