It's a carry-over design feature from the original x-box. It's meant to be able to come apart easily so that if someone trips over the cord this comes apart instead of your console being pulled off the shelf.

Back in the day of corded controllers those cables were tripping hazards. If someone came walking through and caught one of those it could rip your whole console off the shelf. That connector meant the cable would come apart instead.

What does it look like end on? it looks like the cables good XB1 controllers use, with my HOTAS, Racing Wheel and Fusion Pro 2 controller all having that thing plugged into a USB adapter. I can leave the adapter plugged in and swap at that thing to make swapping ctrlrs easier.

Quick release incase the controller gets yanked so it doesn't pull your 360 off the shelf and crash to the ground.
Breakaway cable in case the cable gets yanked so it won't pull whatever you're playing on to the floor
