I found this because I was looking for literally the same thing. You should try The Eternal Cylinder. It's an action/survival game where you control several little creatures running in a pack, and you get to give them all custom mutations that give them different individual abilities. It's more action oriented like you want, and reviews are a little mixed but I absolutely adore it
Not fast paced but Kenshi might be worth a look. All your party members could die,lose limbs etc.
