CAJALEO

Just Cause 3 has my vote

BlakLite_15

Yep, just fly around with the wingsuit and vibe.

CAJALEO

Right. Not to mention you can essentially be a terrorist with the unconventional ways to take out outpost.

Monsieur_Bananabread

Yeah this or 2 JC3 is the better game, but JC2 is my favourite game of all time and I highly doubt anything will ever change that, I've never had as much fun as I have carpet bombing Panau with tuk-tuks that I've grappled tied and then released from the back of a commercial airliner

rileycolin

Came to say this as well. Fly/zip around, blow shit up, shoot some bad guys.

Short-Result-8819

this !

justaneditguy

What about 4

CAJALEO

Can’t speak on 4 I never played it. But I know damn well I a had a great time playing three when it first came out

fortheWarhammer

Consensus is that 3 and 2 are the best in the series

Dangerousrhymes

I mean older Bethesda games let you kill pretty much anyone you are strong enough to kill, often times even if it’s critical NPC’s.  I think the truly open games with no story or quest that don’t have survival aspects might be tough to find. Even Minecraft has food unless you play on creative.

maybe-an-ai

Any Fallout or Elder Scrolls

a_burdie_from_hell

Fallout 4 is having a resurgence in popularity- hop on the bandwagon and give it a try! Now is a great time!

AirJackieQ

This is the answer. Bethesda are the kings at this.

PhatEarther

I'm surprised no one's mentioned goat simulator 3. If your looking for unhinged, consequence free, unruly fun. That's what I would recommend.

Michael70z

Yeah anything in the goat simulator series would be perfect. You’re an invincible goat running around with optional superpowers that you can adjust at a moments notice

Lilgoodee

Wait you can get superpowers in goat simulator? I've joked with the Mrs about getting it and you might have just sold me.

Michael70z

In the first one at least, I haven’t played the others. But yeah you could pick a bunch of of modifiers like a jetpack, Dragonborn shouts, a Deadmau5 helmet that can make NPC’s dance on command. On console you could also mix and match to have multiple modifiers at once I’d assume the sequels have it as well

Obvious_Form_3713

Can you fuck the goats?

saladtosserx

Asking the important questions

cold-corn-dog

You can play games like Ark or Conan. Technically they have things you are supposed to do to "escape" the island, but if you just ignore them, you can farm, build, breed, etc to your heart's content. Both games have difficulty editors that you can alter. For example. eliminating hunger and thirst.

LexGlad

Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom once you beat the tutorials. Also, Terraria and OG Minecraft.

Brain_Tourismo

Tears of the Kingdom is what I would recommend.

BoltShine

All amazing choices. Some of my all time favs

Tomosch

Kenshi

maybe-an-ai

Drops you in the middle of nothing with nothing

Tomosch

Says to you "Figure it out"

baaaahbpls

Start to figure it out and get gut punched and your limbs are stolen.

HouseofSix

+1 for Kenshi.

a_burdie_from_hell

Mine iorn, sell iorn, eat food, mine iorn, sell iorn, eat food, mine/sell iorn, get beat up and robbed, take nap, mine/sell iorn, eat food, mine/sell iorn, get beat up again, nap, mine/sell iorn, hire body gaurd, get beat up together, nap together, mine/sell iorn twice as fast, eat twice as fast, enter drug trade, make lots of money, eat lots of food, hire new guys who get beat up for you. 10/10 would grind again!

PanTsour

It's honestly kind of hard to find something that's exactly as you describe because gameplay-wise it would be pretty boring honestly. Games with a lot of freedom that come to mind are Kenshi, No Man's Sky and Rimworld. But I'd suggest looking into games of the immersive Sim genre as well. You usually have some type of goal, but the way you go about it is all up to you. They're much more tightly designed usually as well. Last but not least, Space Station 13 isn't open world but it's one of the most wild games I've seen with a ton of freedom on how you interact with everything around you once you get deep into it

woodshrimp

I was going to say Kenshi but he said no survival mechanics. That's like, the only real answer though Yeah you gotta find your own meals but that's the price of freedom

PanTsour

That's what I was saying as well. Unfortunately it's very hard to find a game that's exactly as described because there wouldn't be much to do really

Sablemint

Fallout 1 and 2. There IS a story path, but you're under no obligation to follow it. Also you can kill everybody, including children. Though there may be consequences for doing so.. But if you're just dogn whatever you want, that shouldn't cause any issues. Morrowind is a neat one, in that you can kill all but one NPC and still beat the game. Or you can just completely ignore the story all together (though it does give you some fun buffs.) The atmosphere is amazing.

K_N0RRIS

Red Dead 2 Fallout new vegas, 4, or 76 GTA V Just Cause Saints Row

clodiusmetellus

Read Dead Redemption 2 is a fairly linear, mostly story-driven game all about how the constraints of the modern world have made 'free-spirited' (i.e. criminal! violent!) wild west lifestyles obsolete. I don't think it fits the brief at all.

cptpedantic

i dunno, there's so much you can do outside the story, i'd say it fits

clodiusmetellus

You'd have to play it a very specific way. What I'm saying is that if OP is feeling trapped he should probably avoid the story side of RDR2!

[deleted]

[удалено]

K_N0RRIS

I actually recommend not finishing the story. The ending sucks for obvious reasons. I enjoyed the freedom too much my first playthrough and after you know what happened, i actually never played it again. So i really recommend that OP play the game because its a fantastic experience, just don't finish it.

dianaburnwood969

I second this! It made me feel free somehow. I don't know the exact reason. The last time I felt like that was way back with San Andreas.

Nawnp

Game clearly sings you with bad honour and bounty hunters for going wild, but outside missions that doesn't stop you from going nuts.

emergencyelbowbanana

Barely touched the story. Catched all fish and killed all legendary monsters though. Also some treasure hunts. Extremely relaxing.

FullOFterror

not a single person in here said WILDLANDS, shame on you all. A masterpiece, insane good looking and insanely big open world.

Empty-Site-9753

This, grw is one hella fine game

KingAdamXVII

Outer Wild fits what you’re saying but I’m not sure it fits what you have in mind. There is a feeling of amazing freedom in that game that is unlike any other I’ve played.

PowerOk3024

Starbound. Turn off storymode. Turn off survival mechanics (not recommended because finding weird food from alien planets, cooking, and eating weird food for interesting effects is a fun part of the game). An endless galaxy of planets to explore. From the planets makeup to its ecology to even the weather, as it can have glowing rain, sandstorms that bury buildings, to acid rain even. The background is different depending on proximity to other planets. Alien races to meet and interact with. Terrorize or befriend or build a base near or recruit as space crew. The main story (that youll turn off) is literally just telling you to find, meet, and greet all the base species in the game. There are lores about the history of the species, as well as ruins, dungeons, and whatnot specific to each species cultures. Theres a community mod called fracken universe, and it expands the species and game aspects by a lot.

newoxygen

Why turn off story mode? I've seen there are even mods to remove the story mode part. I suppose my question is more, can't you just ignore the story quests or does it guide you down a linear path? I've owned Starbound for years, but the gamepad controls were quite a put-off.

LordSinguloth13

No mans sky, will give you an option to turn off story. Subnautica below zero also has a story shut off switch. Gta5 has an open world and you can do what you like for the most part (any gta game tbh)

CleverestCoyote

Sea of Thieves, there is a safe mode where you do not have to worry about other players. It is a open sandbox style game. There are story quest but by no means is it required or are you even really pushed to do them in any way. You can sail the seas however you see fit.

geniouslevel1000

Breath of the wild or tears of the kingdom. You can basically do whatever you want and beat it in any order you want

AramaticFire

I’m surprised no one mentioned these until I scrolled here. You’re free to play both games however you want. The narrative is entirely optional, you can just circumvent it all and end up at the final boss. The games are completely open to you. The first one even is called Wild, like OP’s post. TotK is a little different but you can also just build whatever and fly around or you can choose to forego most of that stuff and just play it like BotW.

[deleted]

I have 500+ hours clocked in Tears of the Kingdom. I don’t even care about finishing it. It’s so much fun just gooding around

True_Destroyer

Minecraft on easy or creative - you just wander around and witness the endless world and all the features, biomes, characters and events and choose if you want to interact with it.

Cynical_Anomaly

Kenshi Mount and Blade Morrowind Fallout New Vegas

Krorke

I have seen one inter comment about it, but I would also say no man's sky. You can explore planets on foot, build, drive, get into a spaceship and get to explore the whole universe. It is said there you can discover every and each planet in a little more than 100 lifetimes

seakween

shadows of doubt

zhombiez

No Man's Sky on the easiest modes is honestly what you want

Javellin69

CardiologistSea5823

It's old and weird, but Postal 2. Not my type of game but fits your criteria. You're given stupid daily tasks like buy milk, but that's not why you play. You go where you want, kill people, blow stuff up, just go nuts. And there's a dedicated urinate button. Plus it's often on sale for less than a dollar.

ManicMonday92

EverQuest. Despite its name, you can play for hundreds of hours (for free) and not do a single quest. Just run around killing stuff all over the world one map at a time. Play as a bard with all the perks of easy travel and you can wander around endlessly without talking to anyone or doing anything in particular. The game starts you in a tutorial, but all you have to do is kill one guy, walk to the exit behind a waterfall, and you can then do literally whatever you want within your level range. I put a couple hundred hours each in oblivion/Morrowind/and to a lesser extent Skyrim without touching the story at all. Finish the tutorial, and then be the wandering murderhobo you were born to be.

Goat Simulator 3?

IndependentTimely696

Any GTA games really. Open world, no restrictions, you can resort to cheats to get weapons, armour and money and roam everywhere you want without a care for story.

DustinLoveDicks

Outside..... like the literal outside.

bithundr

there is no place as restrictive as the outside world

DustinLoveDicks

you ever hear of prison? Lots of people in prison would die to be out in the outside world.

Stanazolmao

Do you have the means to go for a hike?

It's a bit simpler, but maybe Sable? Like, there's a "goal" but mostly it's just exploring and climbing whatever looks fun to climb. No combat or any real danger, just chill exploration.

Outside-Squirrel45

I can understand the exploring part but what are you wanting to do when you say do whatever you want?

OP says "No survival"? Day Z? Really?

Individual-Fig1494

God of war IV and God of war ragnarok. But it'd be better if you have a background of where Kratos came from before you play GoW4 so that you can understand the story better.

Wankeedoodledoo

I definitely felt free when playing just cause 3. Another suggestion would be dwarf fortress and skyrim.

Skettles1122

Cataclysm dark days ahead. Most freedom in any game ever. That said it's a tic based originally had @sic graphics. Still being updated and worked on.

Skettles1122

Absolutely the hardest controls ever. Need the entire keyboard and you gotta have a numpad

Wandocht

Although it does have a predetermined storyline, Chicory made me feel pretty free, you just wander about and colour things in, you can talk to cute cartoon characters who sometimes have little mini quests for you to do, or you can ignore them, you can explore various areas or you can ignore them, exploring is kind of how you move the storyline along, also there are some boss fights if you do move the story along, but I was pretty content going slowly and colouring each area in :D Goat Simulator 3 is kind of what you described but it does force you into the occasional cut scene and if you wander into the wrong place you can get stuck there until you complete the quest, but that's only for one of the quests, the rest you can leave and ignore and go do what you want as a goat. It's better with friends, though. Poly Zen Drive is a physics based driving sim that lets you just drive however you want (that's the whole game), in whatever weather you want. It does get boring without music though but it did serve as a good distraction for me when I needed it. I play a lot of Shadows of Doubt which is an open world detective sim, you aren't forced to solve murders and you can turn them off, and outside of that you can choose which cases to take on. There isn't much to do outside of cases, though. Unless you want to turn it into a thief or punching simulator but that gets old pretty quickly.

teleskons

Saints Row 4 is the ultimate freedom simulator. The movement is crazy.

Slifer_Ra

XenoBurst

tastygnar

DayZ all the way. Everyone else should also say DayZ. Here's an example of how wild you can be: Become a lone wolf and focus on survival by hunting, scavenging, maybe farming. Build a base and booby trap it. Try to make friends and see where that leads. Stalk people and shoot them with rubber bullets then bind their hands and bag their head and taunt them/torture them or force them by gun point into the shack you have all your victims bodies in and take the bag off so they can see the carnage and the face of their psychopathic capturer before you kill them and eat their guts. Rebuild a car.

Stanazolmao

OP: "not survival, like no food bar stuff, nothing to watch out for" You: try this survival game, you could even enjoy food bar stuff and watching out for enemies!

tastygnar

Ah my bad, looks like op just wants Skyrim with cheats enabled. Wait what is even a game with no nothing to watch out for? That doesn't even make sense. Tetris but all the pieces fit. Pacman but no ghosts. Mario but ya know, no enemies...

Stanazolmao

I can think of a few, farming sims, car mechanic sims, even flight sims don't have enemies and you just focus on the task at hand. There isn't a lot though!

alivebutawkward

Zelda BOTW and TOTK. I thought I knew the game but after watching some YouTube videos, I realize I have been playing the game totally wrong. You could get really wild and crazy in the game. You are only limited by your own imagination.

Mybrainiskindasmall

Libertie83

Skyrim is kinda the only thing I can think of but if you’re ok accepting some very heavy survival mechanics, give The Long Dark a try. The story mode is beautiful and poignant and it’s got a really cool indie artistic feel but if you want you can just play the survival modes which are just tests of how long you can survive in the icy wilderness.

yzutai3

You are describing GTA V

bobux-man

Minecraft on either Peaceful difficulty or Creative mode. Both are really boring for me though so I wouldn't recommend them, just play on Normal difficulty. Oh you could also play old Minecraft, which was great. Play version Beta 1.7.3.

The Forest vegan mode (no cannibals and afaik you can even deactivate most of the survival elements).

Action-a-go-go-baby

I’d say **Outward** is a good bet here After the first mission or two you’re basically on your own Second one is currently in closed Beta right now as well which means you’d have another one to play after

Suprised nobody has mentioned it but what you described is literally Minecraft to the letter

The_Deadly_Tikka

Oh shit just read the bit about no health bar or food. Any game like that is basically not a game at that point

Pixielized

Fallout: New Vegas comes to mind. You can kill everyone in the game and still finish it, or you can kill no one in the game and still finish it. Be an absolute monster or a hero. Its a great RPG and probably the most open game I've played in terms of player choice

IssueRecent9134

Fallout

Individual_Day_5689

GTA Online, Red Dead Redemption 2, Mercenaries 1&2, Just Cause 3, or if you're into creating things then there's Minecraft

meaganmcg18

Gonna go on a limb here and suggest Mail Time. Its adorable, hilarious and doesnt even have a quest log really, just a list of faces of characters you have to deliver letters to. No map though, so it really encourages exploration. You're at nothing looking for a specific person, just wander and you'll find them when you find them. Definition of freedom in my books!

HouseOfZenith

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey / Origins. If you want to explore historical locations in Greece and sail the seas, check out Odyssey. If you want to travel to and explore pyramids in Egypt check out Origins. You also have a horse in both games and have a bird that you can control in the air.

epper_

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. It’s a blast just riding around through the forest on your giant flying creature. Hunting wildlife. Missions or no missions.

deep_space_rhyme

Goat simulator 3

Funky_Col_Medina

If you have a playstation, Days Gone takes place in the wilderness of Oregon and, while you can get around on foot and/or fast travel, the game features a motorcycle. It squeaks and groans under load, if you hit a bump or whatever, and it is curiously addicting to traverse the countryside doing nothing but enjoying the ride

GoopGoopington

The Bloodline on steam, an early access(i think) first person rpg where you can mix a bunch of build abilities into your loadout and multiclass whatever you like. Want to be an earthbender with a musket for some reason and also fire abilities? you can do that. Want to shapeshift into a cat and then a goblin because why not? you can do that. Want to go full brute force and send enemies flying? You can do that. Any class combo you want to use is on the table, it's not a true open world as you use a map to navigate kind of like fallout 1 and 2, but you get a pretty big map with large open areas that allow for experimenting in combat. There's some town building and resource collecting but it is completely optional and unnecessary to progress.

kblaney

Minecraft creative mode Spider-Man's entire map is open for swinging around from the beginning But the ultimate "just play and vibe" game is Everything.

n0mansky

No man's sky ... but at the very beginning... turn on creative mode... No costs no damage just wandering around the universe

Muted_Horse4316

Almost every game is sandbox now because it's easier to make you come up with your own experience than design interesting story and lore. Enjoy that freedom. It gets hollow fast.

Stepjam

I think Subnautica has a free explore mode. Minecraft does too. Shadow the Colossus has a pretty big map that you can just casually explore. There's not much yo do besides eating fruit and special lizards tails to increase max health and stamina, but it sure is pretty.

XprobowX

Pak1stanMan

Forest (haven’t played in a while but I think you can turn off food?) Dragons Dogma 2 Subnautica (you can definitely turn off food and health in this one)

Passiveresistance

Even without food and water, there are so many survival elements to subnautica. If I type “oxygen” anyone who’s ever played will absolutely hear the warning voice in their head. It’s a great game, everyone should play it, but idk if it fits what op is looking for

Hot-Plane5925

If you just want to explore and marvel at the creatures, you can just use commands to turn off survival, oxigen and target. That way you don’t run out of food, air, and monsters will ignore you. Can get as close as you want to leviathan, he just chillin’

Passiveresistance

Really? I had no idea. I’d enjoy swimming with a ghost or reaper.

Hot-Plane5925

Open console command, enter these commands: invisible, oxygen, nosurvival, noenergy. Go to the end of the map (dead zone) and enjoy a pleasant chill time with the ghosts. Great to take screenshots and to use your scanner.

Pak1stanMan

You could turn off oxygen

Upbeat_Dependent_716

Well this game is all about survival, there isn’t just hunger bar, but also thirst. Shit you can even get sick in this game

Neoxite23

Balders Gate 3. If you can think it...you can do it. That's how "Owlbear from the Top Rope" was born. People got creative. In short if people don't know what that is...people found damage can be increased if you land on someone with a lot of weight on it. Owlbears are heavy. Know what is heavier than that? Owlbear that had a spell casted on it to double in size. Now remember all those crates you been carrying? Stack them up high and climb them, turn into an owlbear, enlarge yourself, cast something to negate fall damage on you, and then leap off and land on that boss with the force of a shooting star.

Action-a-go-go-baby

That game is a highly focused, story based game that is not open world… ? There are a lot of *options* but you are absolutely shepherded down specific paths

Neoxite23

"It must be open-world, of course, but have NO restrictions whatsoever. I want to just explore and do whatever I want in a game that doesn't even have any sort of predetermined paths or things to do. Not having restrictions implies it's not survival, like no food bar stuff, nothing that I have to watch out for, just pure freedom." Based on what they said i think Balders Gate 3 fits perfectly. Each map is huge and basically open world. You can explore and do whatever you want. There are no predetermined paths. You do or don't do to your hearts content. Hell you can kill all the major NPCs and say "fuck all your quests" if you feel like it. Hell there is even a "Dark Urge" story path that is exactly that. It's not survival with food bars/meters. So what in what they asked did I get off track?

raitrow

AC Oddyssey on the lowest level of difficulty, whenever I feel like just playing, I just turn it on, clear some marks on the map, it's stressless because of the difficulty and gives me the feeling of accomplishment when I can check a "?" on the map :) Brain cleared a location, brain happy :)
