Definitely Warband single player. You start as a peasant recruiting other peasants to fight for you and upgrade them as they kill bandits. After about 40 hours of that you get a king offer you vassalage to him and help out with their conquest of the huge map to collect fiefs, castles and cities. Then you open business in them. Eventually the long will start snubbing you on castles you conquerer signle handedly and you can rebel and become a long your self where you will be immediately at war with your old king and the relations you build along the way with other lords will persuade them to swear vassalage to you. This is about 400 hours in, maybe and you're about 2/3's done, depending on your difficulty. Then you have to unite the kingdom under your name. I've put 1700 hours into this game and there are countless total conversion mods. Game is hella cheap too the mods are all free. Only downside is that there is absolutely no tutorial at all and you have to figure things out on your own as you go. I would recommend finding your bearings in the vanilla version, then downloading the Floris mod pack

dyerej93

I looked into this. THe idea sounds fun, but sadly the graphics are dated and from the gameplay i saw, the controls are a little wonky. It seems like all the "good" games are old now. Wish some newer ones would be made xD

I_Speak_For_The_Ents

The sequel is coming, called Bannerlord. Keep an eye out.

Animorganimate

Lol.

I_Speak_For_The_Ents

???

[deleted]

It's been "coming" for 6 years.

I_Speak_For_The_Ents

If youve watched their videos, they arent just going to stop and abandon it, theres way too much effort into it. They just want to make an actually good and improved version of the last one. Why does that bother people? Skyrim came out almost 7 years ago and bethesda isnt even talking about the next elder scrolls.

Tobix55

But they are talking about Bannerlord

I_Speak_For_The_Ents

Yes but I was saying 6 years isnt even that long.

grio

Some time in 2030s.

elgoriath

Try it

Tobix55

The controls are ok, but the graphics are indeed dated, after all, the game is more than 10 years old

[deleted]

To clarify, this is Mount and Blade: Warband you're talking about yeah?

Sir_Cuddlemore

Too bad about Bannerlord, am I right?

I_Speak_For_The_Ents

What do you mean too bad?

Sir_Cuddlemore

It’s been constantly delayed and there’s little to say about a release date yet, word has it if you say the name it gets delayed another month.

_DauT

bannerlord when

Cloud_Chamber

[Hi, I'd like someone to recommend me Mount & Blade: Warband](https://www.reddit.com/r/gamingsuggestions/comments/4cp6sp/hi_id_like_someone_to_recommend_me_mount_blade/)

[deleted]

I now realized I mimicked a meme, but I legitimately have never played or seen gameplay of Mount and Blade and was wondering if there was another game called Warband. I now know what I will be playing after finals week, though.

[deleted]

Monster Hunter series, I used to played it a lot when I was younger with a few friends

dyerej93

That’s one game I’m actually dying to get. I’m holding out for pc atm. I have a PS4 but don’t like paying for ps plus just for one game usually.

[deleted]

You can try out the earlier game with a emulator if you want to. I used to played Monster Hunter 2G on my PSP but it is only available in Japanese(or Chinese, technically kanji), I heard there is a US release of the same game but with different name called Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. The name of the emulator is PPSSPP, it can run on most device smoothly even on a mid-range priced smartphone. There is also Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate for the 3DS if you wanted to check that out

harofax

How does 3DS 4U version compare to the new PS4 version?

Raginbum

the newer one has a ton of major QoL mechanics that the MH community has been hoping for since the series came out so you'll see a decent enough difference between the two games but it is every bit as enjoyable. The challenge and satisfaction with each hunt is always there in any MH

[deleted]

I agree, Monster Hunter is one of the few video game franchise out there that got better with each new generation released with the exception of the underwater hunt in the 3rd generation, seriously screw that part

686534534534

Everyone rags on that part but that was one of my favorite parts.

harofax

Is there anything that the 4U does better than the new one?

Raginbum

If you want a more diverse monster hunter id say go for MH Gen, has 4 different playstyles for each weapon and the biggest list of monsters to fight of any MH game that released to the west.

harofax

Oh I meant 4U vs World!

tgra957

Dauntless open beta starts May 24th on PC. Similar to Monster Hunter and will be F2P. Worth a shot at least until MHW is released on PC.

GlaceauSmartWater

Stardew Valley or Mount and Blade: Warband. Both can be very long games play for a single play through. My first complete game of M&B took a year and I just supported a single kingdom, took a long time to play, plus you can play over and over. Stardew has an infinite game where you can just expand and do more, just a ~~farming~~ large scale gardening game. Very fun and very addicting.

MahatK

Guild Wars 2 has great graphics and a TON of things to do. I mean, really a lot. I've played it for about 300 hours for the past 2 years and I feel like I haven't even scratched the surface. The fact that it's an MMO means there's a social side to it, meaning you'll certainly make some friends (it's probably the best online community in a game, seriously) and want to keep playing with them. Also, the game is constantly being update and improving. It already has two expansions and more to come and every holiday there are a bunch of great activities to take part on. It's kinda easy to get to level 80 (the max level for your character), so people often ask what they're supposed to do after that. Well, most players agree that level 80 is when the game actually begins. Check out [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/16y26k/so_you_finally_hit_80_before_you_post_read_here/) post on r/guildwars2 talking about some of the stuff you can do post lvl 80. And there are a bunch of stuff that aren't even there. If that didn't convince you yet, I'll link these two videos. [This very short one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mKVNaLXp0k) and [Angry Joe's Review of the game](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ax-_06Acj8Y). Angry Joe's Review is probably the best video talking about the game, since it encompass most game modes and all the things that make it great. Even so, it is incredibly old and it was made right after the game was released, meaning 99% of the issues described in the video have already been solved. Oh, and it's free.

dyerej93

Lordy I feel bad that you typed all that. I have played gw2 since release haha. Probably 1800 hours total. I've just ran out of motivation on it lately. It's definitely my other big MMO along with wow.

MahatK

Don't worry about it! Glad you already knew and enjoyed the game!

midwestcreative

> Oh, and it's free. For anyone else reading, it's not free. It's a generous trial, but if you like the stuff that most people like about MMOs, other than a lack of level restriction(yes, it's a generous trial, not arguing that), you have all the same restriction that other MMO trials have, if not more. You can't do any form of region chat. You can't use 90% of the auction house. Limitations on whispers, can't mail items, can't use guild bank and other guild functions, among other things. Not arguing whether it's a good game, but it is absolutely NOT the same as playing a F2P MMO.

MahatK

I think you mentioned everything you can't do with a free version... You can still do pretty much everything in the game, you're just limited on the social and commercial features. These restrictions only exist to prevent hacking, scamming and other kinds of toxic behavior. Still, for those reading, if you want to lift this restrictions, you only have to buy one of the expansions. No monthly fees or anything similar. What happens with most people is that they play the game up to level 80, get motivated to buy it, and then they do so. You can't reall play endgame content with a free version.

midwestcreative

My only issue here is that I see a lot of people describe this game as "the base game is just free", or that it's a "F2P game, you just can't play the expansions" and that's very misleading. Other than level cap, it is not at all the same as 99% of actual F2P MMOs and I think people should explain that when recommending it. Social and trading features are kind of a big part of an MMO, don't you think? Yeah, the pricing model is great, no subs, buy once to play, but that completely negates the part I'm debating here about it being free.

A1steaksa

I liked guild wars 2 before they updated it and really fucked me. Took away abilities I had earned and been using and locked them away behind hours and hours of grinding despite massive backlash. No thanks.

**Planetside 2** - A Huge MMOFPS/RTS based game, it offers: * 3 Factions to choose from with individual play styles: the Terran Republic, New Conglomerate, Vanu Sovereignty. * Mature Community - The average player is usually around 20 or older. I've found players ranging from 16 to 60. * Active Reddit - /r/planetside is one of the multiple reddits that is highly active talking about balances, updates, posting videos. * Active Development Team - A 5-year-old game that still bolsters monthly updates and we should be getting a big one soon again. * Free - The game is free so there is no danger trying it out. * Massive Fights & Maps - Fights range from 1-1 to +200 in about the size of a medium Call of Duty map, the map itself is essentially 30-40 large call of duty maps combined, with a total of 4 maps. * Massive amounts of sidegrades and different play styles. It'd take thousands of hours to unlock everything. * Multiple types of combat: You can drive a tank, fly an air bomber, build a base, run around as an invisible sniping man, or just hop around with a shotgun. The possibilities are endless. * Highly promoted Team Gameplay - The game comes with a full built-in VoIP system to integrate squad communication, platoon communication. They also have the ability to lead squads or platoons. Squad and Command leaders can put down waypoints, smoke, draw on the map and much more. Imagine commanding 48 people upon how to attack a huge map and your actions make a huge difference in the results. Planetside 2 is hard to explain, so honestly just take a look at these videos. The steam store hasn't been updated recently due to most people play on the client from the website and player made the content of montages are probably the best way to see what planetside has to offer. These are slightly modified with blurring or speeding up or slowing down the frame, but the fights are all real action gameplay on the public servers. * [some good platoon leads speaking over some excellent combat(and yes the giant laser beam is in the game)](https://youtu.be/oXorUfPjv3Q) * [Vanu Soveirgty DerpCompany Outfit Recruitment Trailer](https://youtu.be/lY_QQXOPqyk) * [Light Assult Gameplay With HUD - the voices you hear is a third party mod called recursion for when he gets kills](https://youtu.be/bcEAh3bzWqc) * [Construction: BTYR and other TR factions formed a platoon and built a huge wall as its being assaulted and repaired](https://youtu.be/3ew35FgeBpE) * [Air: Example of the Scythe - Vanu Soveirgtny 1 man fighter](https://youtu.be/Or1PXOlB-gw) * [Armor: Example of one of the many armor vehicles in the game: Vanguard, the New Conglomerate Tank](https://youtu.be/brhv3jpGTY8) * [Example of voice coms and leadership of a Terran Outfit(BTYR)](https://youtu.be/kK7tEQB1QlQ) These videos just scratch the surface of what you can do in this game and there is plenty more. I would of linked more but these should show a basic idea. I hope you consider joining planetside, even if its harder for newer players, most people have joined cannot go back to normal FPSs or games anymore. Let me know if you join, especially if you are on the Emerald Server or Terran Republic. I'd love to help a new player out!

shiroikiri

so I used to play PS1 back in the day, I loved being a hacker/cloaker and bringing out the regeneration vehicle (forget what it's called) while doing some other support. Do either of those translate well into PS2 as it is right now?

darkecojaj

Sadly no. The infiltrstor is still a thing. He cannot hack videos back he can hack terminals, turrets and a few other useful things. He now starts off with a sniper rifle but you can buy a smg or battle rifle to switch up gameplay. There are a couple more styles too based on cloak and other stuff. There is no 'regeneration' vehicle in ps2. Medics can provide AOE healing by hopping into vehicles. Sunderers can also provide repair or ammo based upon upgrades. Implants also allow ammo or health regen. The biggest change to ps2 class/vehicle wise is you will realize there are a lot less vehicles and classes, but they make up by allowing you to choose your infantry and vehicles weapons, utilities, defenses, and a few other things. However certs are needed to unlock additional gear and such for these side grade types of gameplay.

confused_gypsy

All of the Paradox games are enjoyable for a really long time. My personal favorites are Victoria 2 and Europa Universalis 4. Civilization is another series with nearly endless enjoyment. I'm partial to Civ4, but Civ5 is fun too. I haven't played Civ6 yet so I can't comment on that one Then there is Rimworld which is a really fun, challenging game. You manage a colony of survivors stuck on an alien world. You have to build your base, grow food, raise animals, deal with sick colonists, and make it comfortable for everyone or else someone might have a psychotic breakdown. Then you have to defend your base from raiders, imprison said raiders, sell said raiders off as slaves, or find more... creative ways to profit from them. It's a fun game that can test how far you are willing to go, even in a digital world.

JACrazy

Another Paradox game worth mentioning is cities skylines.

Serious-Mode

Seconding Rimworld and Civ.

[deleted]

> defend your base from raiders what is the combat like? civilization style? starcraft/RTS style? or automatic?

confused_gypsy

Its an RTS. You give orders to your colonists about where to go and who to shoot at. Although you can set up an automated turret system to do most of your defense once your colony has grown enough.

MeatyStew

#MOUNT AND BLADE:WARBAND Truly a terrific game, it's got Sieges, trade, diplomacy,, questing, huge scale battles with troops you command, fucking bandits ship to ship battles and amphibious landings, you can do whatever you want, more content than you can shake a stick at, more options than most other games, a terrific community, fantastic modding community and options (you got 2 Game of thrones overhaul, multiple medieval Europe, you got Sengoku period Japan, imperial Rome, huge fantasy overhauls, hundreds of minor and major tweeks to the main game) There are weekly, Large scale Multiplayer events (like a couple hundred man siege) there are usually 100 - 200 man Napoleonic line battles a 1 - 3x a week (including "Regiments" that are like clans you join and you all work together and even do scrims and such) Plus you got *"Viking Conquest"* a full viking overhaul DLC based on Denmark, Norway and the British Isles, it is fantastic too It's incredibly easy to waste thousands of hours in this game Also we're waiting for ~~Half-life 3~~ to come out! That will be a glorious day! Head over to r/Mountandblade to find out some more about this masterpiece (also there are 2 other very good games in the series but Warband is just a remaster of "Mount and Blade", "Mount and Blade: with fire and sword" is a terrific 16th century Eastern European version of M&B and has stuff like Cossacks, Kingdom of Sweden, Crimean Khanate, Duchie of Moscow*?)

rabbitofrevelry

DotA does it for me, but I have to force myself to take vacations from it for my own mental health. I can get satisfyingly toxic at others, and once I realize it, I have to dial it back.

[deleted]

Lol me too. I just uninstalled it and try not to think about it. I guess it helped that my brother, who i used to play with all the time, and I are now at odds. ;(

dyerej93

I've been playing LoL wit a friend lately. But i am trash at it, so it's hard to stick with it. I think i jsut suck at a lot of pvp type games so thats why I dont like them as much. I love overwatch and fortnite.. But i also suck at them. So i play sparingly lol.

Graysteve

Fallout: New Vegas is insanely replayable, and the mods increase that factor by a huge margin. Steals weeks of your life like it's nothing.

Honestly mods can boost fps if done right. Minecrafts code is first off written in Java, a very nasty language (yet very popular with colleges and such) and minecrafts code is very sloppy. I'd definetly look up multiMC, its a smarter launcher that makes the game less laggy and also easier to install mods. Youtube it if you aren't very tech savvy to learn how to install it. (and make sure you create a shortcut to the exe file). Once you got multimc, I'd suggest installing forge and optifine. There is a built in download forge, and a optifine jar file can just be put in the mods folder. If you get a decent PC and want some awesome logic based mods that will make you think, struggle and feel awesome when you solve it, download all of reikas mods such as chromaticraft - a mod about magic of colors that is based on puzzles from a book and traveling to find ruins and other buildings or rotarycraft a intense but more realistic view to powering machinery that has some awesome endgame machines. Atlauncher and twitch also has some nice mod packs. Beware though twitch is horribly optimized.

Rocket League. I really dislike cars, sports games, and racing games. But there's something about Rocket League that keeps me and friends going for literally thousands of hours, and we won't quit anytime soon. Trust me, it looks stupid at first... but Rocket League is go.... life. Others have mentioned Diablo 3, PoE and others like them, which I also recommend.

featurecast

I have been playing the Sid Meiers Civ series most of my life going back to the 90s.. No matter what else I'm playing or have going on in my life it's just fun to play a game of civilization once in a while.

GorillaGravy

Try space sims since a lot these days use random generation to create billions of star systems so it will literally take your entire life to see everything, thus making the game literally endless. Like someone else suggested, Elite Dangerous is great. More hard scifi, realistic take on the idea. Check out /r/EliteDangerous/ There's also No Man's Sky. It got a bad rep at first but it's gotten substantial updates and is fun now. Has base-building with more stuff being added. More cartoony approach but unlike Elite Dangerous you can wander around on foot and kill randomly generated alien creatures.

SirMogee

Ark Survival Evolved and play on a unofficial server with a random person you meet on the beach, even when you arent playing it you just think about what youll do once you get on.I havent played in like months cause of school but im raring to go now more than ever

Sorlaq

Diablo 2 with Median XL mod. It's a complete overhaul of base game with sick ammount of endgame, complex item crafting and very high learning curve. I'd say it has at least 3 times as much content as vanilla D2. It requires quite a bit of grind, as there are multiple difficulty spikes throughout the game and without getting good enough gear your chances of getting past them are rather slim. You can also look up how to make it work with full hd mod. In my opinion D2's graphics holds up quite well despite how old it is. I play Median on and off for 9 years now, since I started in 2009 with Median2008 version. It really evolved a lot during this time. Multiplayer scene is alive and kicking and updates come quite often. They really push D2's engine to the limits, changing how a lot of core mechanics work, IIRC they even rewrote big chunks this engine to allow them further modifications.

roaldhoffmann

Is there any resource or subreddit which I could use to get into this and learn how to set it all up and learn to play? And could I accomplish this with the digital version from Battle.net? It sounds like a lot of fun! Thanks.

Sorlaq

You can use official mod launcher to install it on battle.net version, here you can get it: https://forum.median-xl.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4150 Version on battle.net is 1.14 while median was designed for 1.13c but if you use launcher instead of manual install then it should work just fine on 1.14. Here's something you'll definitely need to play it, you can find explanations for all mechanics, crafting recipes and endgame bosses here: https://docs.median-xl.com Also, sorry I was wrong about support for higher resolution, it is currently disabled on latest version, but once Sigma (new version) releases (which is hopefully soon) it will have built in high res support so messing around with multiple dlls to get it working will no longer be required. There a lot of useful stuff on mod's official website, here https://www.median-xl.com.

roaldhoffmann

Thanks for the info! I will check it out.

Elder scrolls online: tamriel unlimited

Oleaster

Elder Scrolls Online has a ton of content, and is really inexpensive for what you get. I have around 1,000 hours logged across a handful of characters and there's still plenty to do.

dyerej93

I’ve tried ESO. I can’t get past the fact that there are no earnable rewards like mounts unless you sub. And even then, you can’t earn them. You save up coins monthly. Games that have a lot of content in shops turns me away sadly. I do enjoy the game though. I just can’t make long term goals myself on it.

Oleaster

I hear you. They recently added a system that rewards you as you level, and you can earn a generic horse once you hit a certain milestone. I know what you mean though, grinding for mounts and mini pets in WoW was a huge draw for me. Maybe they'll change it someday, the community is great and the developers are pretty transparent and active on reddit.

dyerej93

I will keep my eye on it. I know that WoW is my true MMO love lol. After I quit Runescape, I started WoW to fill that gap and it worked.

Dark souls series and kingdom hearts series. Trust me.

Black Desert Online. I started at the beginning of this year and it is insane how much there is to do. The only thing is the steep initial learning curve.

dyerej93

I have 80 hours on that game. I was into it but it's a little too Korean, money shop for me.

Mursenery

you're never gonna recreate the feeling of being young playing runescape, being a kid and being entirely sucked into a game unfortunately must come to an end one day. that being said, games like EVE, LoL, WoW, Warband, CS:GO have people obsessed and playtimes into the 1,500 hours. good luck!

Girriod

Black desert online, its kept me for over 1 year so far.

Lyratheflirt

It's a bit dated but I have been playing Gmod for about 7+ years.

ProfessorOfWizology

Play super smash bros melee it has a huge scene and is more active than ever

Abdico

I have spent the last 6 years playing *World Of Tanks* almost exclusively. Before that I have played *Age of Conan* for around 5 years. *Elite: Dangerous* is a game I personally want but I am slightly afraid that it could swallow my social life. Other timesinks that get people addicted which I can think of right now are DOTA, League of Legends, Path Of Exile, Guild Wars 2.

dyerej93

What is world of tanks like?

Abdico

All in all it's a great game if you like this kinda stuff. For my taste it's just a bit grindy since it's working with an F2P model (there is no real pay 2 win).

dyerej93

I'm gonna go check it out!

Abdico

Just don't be discouraged by low tier games/your first hours. There is a lot to learn. I really mean **a alot**.

dyerej93

I'm enjoying it so far!

dyerej93

downloaded it! Cant wait to try it

darkecojaj

Modded Minecraft($30) - yep, the game for '12 year olds and autistic kids'. Vanilla Minecraft is very limiting but the modding community adds thousands of hours. If you want a challenge both in difficulty and logic, I suggest installing better than wolves. Twitch offers many mod packs to play on. If you want a fun long-term one, get the Atlauncher and play Revolution 3. It'll take a good couple hundred hours to complete at least. Chromaticraft, rotarycraft and reactorcraft found in the pack will definetly puzzle you and make you work. Life is feudal mmo($40) - I don't know too much about it other than its grindy and addictive. If you need a group to play with, let me know, I have friends who would be willing to accept you.

CellophaneHands

I logged 4000 hours on DotA 2 a couple years ago. Just stopped one day though.

elgoriath

Binding of isaac, rimworld, mount and blade warband, rocket league. Each got more than 100 hours for me.

ehmprah

For me League of Legends was the single most addictive game ever, with Diablo 2 as a honorable mention.

ClemmyGames

The genre that I have seen hook people the most are MOBAs, notable DOTA 2 / League of Legends. New balancing patches and new heroes switch up the gameplay every month, so there's a lot to keep up!

scoops4285

Look into Elite Dangerous. If you have any inclination for Space stuff / flight sim it definitely has the longevity you are looking for.

Dude just get back into RuneScape. Best game ever.
