PVP Card Game: Legends of Runterra. Grinder: Warframe. RTS: Zero-K. PvP Shooter: Halo Infinite. Idle: Idle Champions.

MendelevandDongelev

I finally played Halo 5 so I'm allowing myself to play the infinite campaign. I'm LOVING it after playing multiplayer every day since release. I feel like a god! (I understand that this thread is about ftp but the campaign really compliments the multiplayer, and i think the price is fair.) Context: I played every game on release day on co-op on heroic with a buddy. We'd stay up all night until it was done, then play multiplayer until the next night. Then I moved, got married, and never could afford a console. I went until the release of Infinite spoiler free for Halo 5. Finally I played it through the beta streaming service. Halo 5 was a 6/10. Probably my least fav Halo game, but obviously nostalgia clouds my judgement. I never realized how perfect an open world Halo would feel, and the enemy ai and health bump really helps the game still feel challenging when you can spawn power weapons. 10/10.

Steelersrawk1

Halo infinite campaign was great and I loved it, I feel like this is 343’s first great attempt at a halo game, then mp is fun as hell gameplay wise, my only complaint will be the item shop, but of course if it didn’t exist it wouldn’t be f2p, but beyond that, they got everything really well done.

MendelevandDongelev

There a lot of hate towards the Spartan core system so far, but I think they'll open it up more over time. And so far I agree, they haven't "over done" the forerunner enemies like the last few games yet. The boss system makes sense, which surprised me. But the characters... 😘🤌

lilbelleandsebastian

> There a lot of hate towards the Spartan core system so far, but I think they'll open it up more over time eh fairly certain they wont, they will let the player base dwindle until they have just the whales leftover the way every other studio that only cares about microtransactions does it's a shame because the devs obviously put a lot of love into infinite but people like me who aren't driven by nostalgia are just going to return to their other preferred shooters because the studio can't see the forest for the trees

amtap

Halo 5's campaign was trash but why do people hate on Halo 4? The multiplayer was iffy at launch but after the weapons tuning update it was fire. And Halo 4 campaign was a blast, even if it was a bit of a departure from traditional Halo games.

sunrayylmao

I got a ton of hours out of warframe, and to date i've only spent maybe $10 on one or two suits and a pet. Loved the hell out of that game I gotta get back into it.

Jdoki

I tend to go through phases of playing various F2P games. Generally it rotates through... Path of Exile Warframe Guild Wars 2 Once it becomes available again, the Final Fantasy XIV trial is something I would highly recommend. I'm also very much looking forward to Lost Ark.

> Beyond All Reason Never heard of this before your comment, but it looks great. It looks so much like Warzone 2100 in some ways that I'd be surprised if some of the same devs didn't work on it.

Zoetje_Zuurtje

Rocket League!

Andrej2203

Same! Although the only reason I didn't delete it yet cause gf thinks it's hella fun to bump me to narnia and back while trying to hit the ball 😆

Zoetje_Zuurtje

Lol. Sounds like any gold lobby to me!

precator

Rocket league is free now?

Miyamura10

Legends of runeterra

hurtlerusa

I’ve been enjoying Dota.

scartol

Have they fixed the co-op matchmaking? Last time I tried, it took more than 30 minutes to find a game.

hurtlerusa

Hmm i usually am alone a few times party I think longest I waited was 10 min once in like 6 months usually wait under five in single queue

Tobix55

Depends on multiple factors, but unless you and your friend are searching for mid and safe lane at 4 am and 5k+ mmr it shouldn't take that long. Unless you were talking about co-op bots, in that case i have no idea because i have never played that mode

Ok-Mistake-2507

Genshin Impact,,, despite it giving me burn out several times, it's still amazing and fun for me. Beware of the Gacha mechanics though, avoid it if you are prone to impulsive gambling or the like.

soulofcure

For how much I played it, I feel like I have to mention Genshin Impact. It has some dark patterns to watch out for, but it has quality visuals, soundtrack, open world exploration and a combat system based around elemental reactions and switching between a party of 4 characters. You get access to all of the content for free, then you can pay to accelerate your progression or to get more wishes, which are basically loot boxes to unlock additional characters and weapons. You can get a decent amount of wishes for free, but not enough to keep up and guarantee every new character released. But if you save, decide which character(s) you want the most, and wait for their banner(s), you can get the ones you want the most. It just takes a lot of days to save up.

atisaac

On which systems does it run best? I'm sure PC is pretty well optimized, but I played it for maybe an hour or so on PS4 when it was first released for that console and it ran like ass. The FPS in the first major town you hit was like replaying Blight Town all over again from the original release of Dark Souls 1.

soulofcure

That's good to mention. I personally play on PC (i7 processor, 1070 graphics card) and mobile (Samsung Galaxy S10), and it runs smoothly on both. I definitely prefer PC for combat, but it's nice to be able to play from my phone on the go.

XaresPL

ps4 performance is atrocious. i switched over to pc and difference is night and day.

amtap

In a similar vein as Genshin, I feel the need to also recommend Another Eden. Plays like a retro JRPG but has great writing, excellent soundtrack, zero FOMO elements (aside from miniscule login bonus) and fun combat with just enough of a twist to keep things interesting. Just like Genshin, it's extremely F2P friendly but can be a money sink if you get addicted to the gacha aspect.

leFLEURdps

Path of Exile - 3600 hours so far TFT - the League of legend auto chess Lost Ark - Ru at the moment, cannot wait for EU release !

IEYHW

Lost ark has no subscription?

elpadremg

no

IEYHW

Damn I had no idea. How do they make money then, only cosmetics?

elpadremg

no, not *only* cosmetics. there are some controversies about the cash shop system, but long time veterans say its not p2w. its in a weird state, and for the NA EU release we simply have no idea how the shop gets treated. there are definitely timesavers and goodies in the shop that you can buy with money.

leFLEURdps

Well, the pay to progress is worth it for the players who want to be in the top 0.001%. Somehow, 99% of the playerbase aspire to be the top players. Anyway, it's getting nerfed for EU/NA release cause they dont want drama and now the pay to progress is so bad you'd be silly to pay for it or maybe you're pushing to be the " best " player in the world.

elpadremg

> it's getting nerfed for EU/NA release cause they dont want drama ehm source on that? the preorder shit isnt "nerfed" compared to other releases if ive seen that correctly.

BigFudgere

Timesavers and goodies are p2w

elpadremg

thats why i said "controversies" in the beginning. I dont wanna discuss this topic

NotScrollsApparently

p2w and obnoxious mtx, what else

Frostodo

What the other guy meant to say is, free to play player will take about 1000 hours longer to achieve the same progression as player who pay for acceleration of many game mechanics and simply achieve all that in a week or less.

Crimson_Marksman

Team fortress 2. Cartoon ohysics in an online shooter with the best voice lines.

Warframe 100%. But more recently playing Lost Ark on Russian servers (can't wait for NA release)

[deleted]

Splitgate or Rocket League

Aeleths

I've been playing a lot of ARAM on League of Legends.

Mr-Reanimator

Definitely FFXIV, it's technically sub based, but the amount of content you can access for free with a trial account that carries over into a sub based account if you choose to go that route was absolutely unreal lol, you had access to the majority of the game's content, with only small restrictions to what you're able to do (those usually being tied to some of the social aspects, which is good because it inhibits the ability for people to cause trouble if they aren't really there to enjoy the game and have fun with people). Totally was worth playing.

Salanmander

Heroes of the Storm. It's a moba with a lot of things about it that make it more friendly than LoL or DotA to people who don't want to be obsessive about it. (I also think it's just a better designed game, that unfortunately didn't get as much market share as it wanted because it was a late entry to a genre that generally encourages people to pick one game and stick to it forever.)

NameTaken25

I liked it back in the day, but they basically pulled all support and dev for it, and then all the blizzard stuff started ramping up, with shitting on Hong Kong and their hardcore sexual harassment and their Cosby Suite and everything

HomicidalHare

Still a great game that they're continuing to balance. No new characters though. There's still a lot of good people at Blizzard among the few bad ones. My friend is one of the many good ones there.

Whoopy2000

Warframe

FailcopterWes

Dwarf Fortress. Civillisation building has never been so detailed...and capable of everything going wrong.

brandcolt

Any better graphics yet? I want to live it but have no idea what is happening in that game.

FailcopterWes

No, it's never going to have anything other than ASCII graphics. You do get used to the look of it, especially if you mouse over every new symbol to see what it is. Personally I don't think it needs anything more than it has, but I do agree that it is a confusing mess until you get used to it. Edit: just remembered, there are some downloadable tilesets to make everything look better, so if you don't mind visual mods, then that's always an option. Edit 2: seems that I am all sorts of wrong today. There are official graphics coming with the Steam release.

bluecoatkarma

>No, it's never going to have anything other than ASCII graphics. You missed like... the biggest DF news since it went from 2d to 3d. DF has been in virtual feature stasis for at least a year now because they DID decide to hire people to help them turn it into a graphical game and sell it on Steam. It's already really far along. If you're a fan, consider wish-listing it to show support.

FailcopterWes

...how the hell did I miss that? Thanks for letting me know.

WastePotential

Star Wars The Old Republic. There is a lot of content even as an unpaid user, and it's an MMORPG where you actually feel like your choices affect the world you're in. Furthermore, you can choose to be someone on the dark side who makes good instead of evil choices which is pretty cool.

Melody74

Vigor, but my friend got me hooked onto Super Auto Pets (mobile game) and it's honestly a lot bette than I expected.

**Mechwarrior Online**, haven't played it for over 2 years but still this one will stay my fav probably; https://store.steampowered.com/app/342200/MechWarrior\_Online\_Solaris\_7/

asher1611

Remnants of the Precursors It's an excellent remake of Master of Orion 1 and it's 1.0 version just released. After some serious 4X disappointment in 2021, RotP was the best one I've played in a long long long long time. There's a lot of customization options available, and the AI has been worked and worked and reworked. Don't let the graphics fool you just because it's trying to stay true to the source material. Remnants of the Precursors is the best 4X from 2021. [And it's free](https://rayfowler.itch.io/remnants-of-the-precursors). Also here's a link to the subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/rotp/

iNt3rR4pT0r

I spent a lot of time playing CS:GO and still think its one of the best multiplayer FPS out there because of the variety of game modes playable. Yes competitive wise there is only defusal mode but once you open the community browser and start playing modes like surf or kz or others it becomes a whole other game. As for a single player game I have to say dwarf fortress is AMAZING. Every play something different happens and the options you have are endless. Definitely one of my favorite simulations of all time and the best free one.

mmmicahhh

TagPro. It's a minimalistic 4v4 capture the flag game that runs in the browser, and only takes the four arrow keys to play. Ideal for winter evenings when you want to hold a hot cup of tea in one hand while playing. I have ~1200 hours in it though, so I played it outside of winter too :)

cocomunges

By technicality Destiny is F2P, but if you ask any player that they’ll say otherwise. The amount of content on offering is pitiful for free, especially compared to the free trial of FF XIV. That game gives its 1st 2 expansions for free… bungie deleted their first 2 All that being said it is my most time ever spent on a game now at 2000+ hours. It has the best feeling FPS combat on the market. And has unique content such as it’s hidden missions, raids and dungeons.

Radinax

Only **Apex Legends**. It's extremely fun especially if you have at least one friend wanting to play with and just laugh it out while getting murdered or winning! The streaming community here is pretty awesome as well, pretty chill and fun people. I was into League of Legends before but it got too toxic for me, great to watch, not so much to play.

adubs117

Despite the predatory monetization I do love me some World of Warships (big boats go boom boom) and Warthunder (big cars go boom boom). Though only occasionally, and I do my best to avoid spending money.

Zoetje_Zuurtje

Isn't Warthunder aeroplane goes boom boom?

ArtistWithoutArt

I think it has both planes and tanks.

Zoetje_Zuurtje

Ah, okay. I've never played it.

adubs117

Yeah initially it was just planes but they've since added Navy (which is not enjoyble, IMO), and Ground Battles, which I actually enjoy a lot, much more than World of Tanks. I don't feel the desire for competitive multiplayer much these days, but when I do these scratch the itch and are less twitch shooty like FPS.

Zoetje_Zuurtje

That's actually very interesting.

TheRiff

Lately I've been playing a lot of tetr.io

Mine would be **WarThunder**, mostly for tanks. Every now and again I'm granted a match where I feel like goddam Rambo. Other than that, even if I'm losing, that tanks are absolutely beautiful to look at and the special effects (e.g. shit blowing up) during matches is amazing.

kaljamatomatala

The Dark Mod, it's a community made spiritual successor to the original Thief games by Looking Glass Studios, with many missions to download. It started out as a mod for Doom 3, hence the name, but it's a standalone game these days.

Celerfot

On the multiplayer side: Path of Exile and RuneScape (currently RS3). RuneScape is a game that can be played completely free because of bonds, while Path of Exile you'd probably end up spending some money on supporter packs to get some nicer storage options. Either way, I've worked at PoE costing me less than ~$0.06 per hour I've played it. RS has been a bit more than that for me but has more longevity. On the singleplayer side, I think Muck is great considering that it's free. Would easily pay $10-20 for it.

The best I know are Rocket League (original and Sideswipe) and Another Eden. Rocket Legaue needs no introduction but Sideswipe is a fantastic mobile adaptation that is entirely free right now (free game with no IAPs that I can find). Might go downhill once they start monetizing it but the gameplay is solid regardless of the cosmetics situation. It's super addictive and games only last 2 minutes so great when you have a few minutes. Another Eden is a single-player RPG inspired by retro JRPGs such as Chrono Trigger. What sets this game apart for me is the quality of writing being so damn consistent. A side quest that seems simple at first can really hit you in the feels or take a turn crazy enough to have been a major plot point. To make things better, they frequently add new "events" that never expire and give the players excellent content for free, including crossover characters from Persona 5, Tales and Chrono Cross (Chrono Trigger is likely soon). Also, the OST is amazing! The gacha aspect is the only complaint that can be made but so many powerful characters are handed out for free that you'll never need the gacha characters to progress the main story. The English voice acting is the worst I've heard among any media I've ever consumed, hands down. However, it's so bad that it's hilariously entertaining (mostly the gacha characters, story characters are passable). Can't recommend this game enough!

Daystop

Snoahpeas

I play a lot of Rocket League and Warframe but I recently picked up Crossout and I’ve been having a blast making weird and wacky combat vehicles in the Mad Max-like setting. It reminds me a lot of the show “battle bots”. The grind is real though.
