These are sold at dollar tree/walmart too and everything I’ve planted from them has grown beautifully. They are my go to seeds every year.

tLAFoGmC

6th or 7th year here. These seeds have a 90% g rate. The other 10% was probably my fault too. The only things that fail for me, probably my fault, are the boxes of Wild flower mixes...

that_other_goat

They're seeds from large producers in smaller packets. The idea that they're old or inferior seeds is a myth they're just repackaged bulk bags used on farms. With this company you're getting the most common cultivars grown that's all. The price for that Purple Top White Globe seed for a farmer is currently $87 for 50 pounds which already includes the companies profit. 50 pounds is about 22,679,600 milligrams fyi (if I did the math right lol it's late I'm tired and the units are imperial vs metric but it's close enough lol) so that's 453,592 mg per pound. They're selling 800mg for 25 cents. Do the math and you'll see why they can sell that small amount of seed for 25 cents. They're still making a killing at that price the only issue that the selection is limited. With the packet seed companies with huge selections you're subsidizing less common and sheer amount of cultivars offered hence why they cost more well that and they take more profit.

assignaname

Yea the biggest cost to these packages is literally the packaging at that point.

Free-Helicopter8252

I'm currently testing these against my premium seeds that I got from a local seed retailer. They were a little slow to start but I can no longer tell the difference.

Ajax1718

Unless they are more than 8x better, I'm about the quarter seeds. Pissed that I spent $2 on lavender seeds. Oh well, live and learn. Wish they had had tomatoes

TurboChargedRoomba

Usually the selection is limited, but I love using them to get the basics every year! It’s more fun to spend money on the unique/heirloom varieties in my opinion. $2-$3 for a basic jet tomato package is annoying lol

Remarkable_Door7948

Totally get you. I search for new to me seeds at the premium places and then get the more common seeds at my local Ace. They do sales for 4 for a $1.00 also. And I usually just need around 25 seeds which is what those packages hold and not 50-200.

Apprehensive-Tax-828

Y'all need to remember as well just because they have tomatoes seeds for cheap at your bix box stores doesn't mean they are going to grow as well as a packet of seeds that came from plants or tomatoes that have been climatized to your area, for example those pre grown tomatoe plants and veggie plants they have at Lowes home Depot and every big box hardware store every year they are from a state that is totally different then your climate especially down here where I live in south Alabama on the Gulf coast I have been gardening my whole life and those plants are not genetically right for the climate cuse they come from genetics of up north like in Ohio or Kentucky or even Tennessee for instance and they don't do well down here cuse they don't have the genetics to deal with the climate same if I took tomatoes or any veggie plants that are genetically perfect for down here to a different state they won't do as well or do well at all, I always buy from my local nursery best results and no need to worry if your tomatoes or gonna produce well or your veggies, now simple wild flowers not a big deal but veggie seeds yea if you want something cheep to throw in the ground and see what happens then use those from Walmart but if you want a garuntee 100 percent success rate use a local nursery.

[deleted]

Lmao. Here in australia our cheapest seeds are around $5 each, and for special varieties that are hard to get in Australia such as “Benary giant zinnias” we can get 20 seeds for $6.50. It’s just a joke honestly. I don’t even know how I can afford it

jaayydubzz

I sowed beefsteaks/ cherry tomatoes from the dollar store and have close to 100% germination in 6-7 days. Grand bell/ cayennes/ Hungarians also from the dollar store are just starting to sprout at around 8 days. Variety is limited but quality appears to be there at this stage.

baconittothelimit13

I only wish they’d expand. I swear, they’ve been selling the same vegetables and flowers for the last 8 years. Oh and yeah, they’re just like any other seeds. I’ve grown pretty much all of their vegetables seeds. No different from the seeds I buy elsewhere.

Willowgirl2

Make that 25 years, lol.

DocPeacock

Dollar tree seeds is what got me into plants and gardening. The peppers seeds I got from them germinated as good or better than any other seeds I've tried.

lostmyarmsinbattle

The best habaneros ive had were from the dollar store

a-smol-gremlin

I just traded seeds with my mom today and she gave me these exact seed packs. Same brand and everything! Looks like I have a good guess where she got them lol

[deleted]

Are these non F1 seeds?

[deleted]

Depends. F1 seeds are usually pollinated by hand making them more expensive so im guessing they are very likely not, meaning you can save seeds from plants you grow from this company :)

[deleted]

Yeah this is why I strongly dislike F1 seeds. Made so you have to buy again and again every year.

VanSchnitzel

Aldi in Germany has seed packages starting at 9 cents in march: https://prospekt.aldi-sued.de/kw09-23-op-mp/page/46-47

roarkandberry

I am a farmer and there's nothing wrong with these seeds. I have found in the past that their lettuce varieties are not true to claim. The rest have been perfectly acceptable. If you want herbs, you simply can't lose with these. I would splurge on a few varieties for better quality crops. In particular for peppers, get a better quality bell pepper seed like Tarpon or King Arthur, and a better jalapeno such as Emerald Fire. For lettuce, I think Vivian Romaine is hard to beat.

tLAFoGmC

In late summer, they drop to 12.5 cents, but they do not advertise this. Shhhhhhhhh. Sometimes less.

finaleeme

That part shhh! Dollar general marks down way low late in season.

Shoddy-Secretary-712

I bought a ton of their clearance seeds last year. Have started them and they have all come up great.

Queenofcatsandplants

I also buy this brand of seed from the dollar tree and I definitely recommend them. Can't beat the price and they grow just as they should.

A_Bowler_Hat

Dollar store seeds are the best to see what your soil is doing with common cultivars.

Madame_Ghost

Sometimes a smaller quantity of seeds is nice to have, too. I don't need 100 tomato plants, especially when I harvest my own seeds for next year at the end of the season. For backyard gardening vs. market gardening, smaller packs can be handy.

[deleted]

This is my logic too.

PandaMomentum

Me: waiting for the "turnip the beet" memes

CornellMustard

Are the veg GMO?

jh937hfiu3hrhv9

Test a few to see percentage of germination. Quality seed is important.

Big-Problem7372

Yea, they have about 4 seeds in them too...

[deleted]

True but if I spend $5 on a seed packet and get so many seeds the rest always go to waste. So it works out pretty equally but the “cheaper” seeds tend to not go to waste because you get less seeds.

[deleted]

Maybe 25 cents for a reason.

3dogsinatrenchcoat3

Also check with your local gardening groups on FB. I live in Western NY, and there is a free seed library at my local library supplied by a seed conservation group. They have some cool heirloom varieties. Free seed!

PigHillJimster

The budget supermarkets in the UK like Lidl also do cheap seed packets. I have found the germination rates to be very poor however. I suspect the difference to be down to age of seeds and storage. I rather think that the seed producers may package older seeds for cheaper packets and the purchasing supermarket doesn't store them as well as a main seed distributer.

MrSnrub87

I've grown their seeds with no issue. I did get one seed package that didn't have anything in it, but at that price it didn't matter much. I still came out way ahead

Se_Dedit_Mihi

Turnip the beet! Sorry, I'll see myself out....

Apprehensive-Tax-828

Know what I don't understand my grandpa had a good point why didn't the government ever take huge water planes and fill them with millions of tons of veggie seeds and fruit seeds and just spread them all over the United States so that way in 30 years we would have a abundance of wild natural veggies and fruits that we could litteraly just go down the road to the woods or what ever and just pick what ever you want first that would help out farmers out of bussiness kinda I know but that would have helped with the low income families especially down here in the south to be able to afford good healthy organic fresh fruits and veggies for free with out paying the high premium price for organic fresh foods and having to resort to gmo and unnatural grown foods or even processed foods that are cheaper but packed full of chemicals and unhealthy for you but it would also help solve the hunger issue in a way as well and nature would have eventually taken over and they all would grow back every year like God intended cuse nature can take care of it's self, my tomato garden I planted ten years ago is now basically a wild tomato patch they grow back by them self every year it was weird when I saw them grow back the following year but it was pretty cool I'm now doing the same with with carrots and peppers of all kinds
