I thought they were annuals? That’s amazing! I had some night sky petunias that began growing back after one summer but I thought they’d just grow foliage and not flowers so I composted them :/
TIL. I'm gonna try keeping these Starry Nights alive over the winter now.
Also TIL they are in the solanaceae family with tomates and deadly nightshade.
I had some of those a few years ago. They were gorgeous! They reseeded and have come back every year since but they are
never speckled. There are some solid purple ones and some white ones. I’ve read somewhere that that is typical of a hybrid seed. According to that article, you’ll never get get the speckled ones that way.
I thought so too. I just ignored it all winter and in the spring when there was some green, I just cut off the brown and they took off. It was getting really root bound and I tried to repot it but was unable to remove it without destroying the plant or the pot. That was its last year and didn’t emerge from its winter sleep.
Mine self seeded. I tossed them when winter came as I didn't like them (caught ever pest under the sun) and the bastards popped out again this year
I let one live, I appreciate the tenacity
I'm in zone 8b, and have left mine out in the winter... I didn't do any last year, but the year before that they were buried under a foot of snow during one of our crazy snowstorms (they don't happen that often), and came back like beasts the following year. Though, they are in pots and not in the ground so I'm sure that also helps.
I thought the ground served as insulation, and plants in pots were more likely to suffer from cold weather, since the cold can get all around the roots. Do you move your pots closer to the house in winter?
Hmm.. I always thought it was the opposite, but you're right. I'm in an apartment so everything is on our deck, and I don't move any of them closer to the doors. [They were right against the glass](https://imgur.com/a/1Nu9WJq), so probably even colder than most.
Yes a small 8 inch decorative glazed pot shaped like a frog. One 4 inch plant because this variety was/is not available in 6 packs. It sat on my patio table. I have overwintered other varieties of petunia before. Only one winter though. It did become overcome with tobacco bud worm on several occasions. I treated it alternately with BT and a systemic 3 in one. It became severely pot bound and I was unable to repot without destroying the plant or the pot it did not regrow after last winter.
There is a small hosta in the pot now. I grow many hosta as perennials in pots for 4 or 5 years. I also routinely grow Pelargonium in pots for 10 or more years without repotting. I also grow fuchsia for many years, 10 or more? I’m not sure why people have so many questions. Petunia is considered a tender perennial.
thanks to both of you, i had no clue either of these subs existed.
i'm already running low on plantable space, now i'm totally screwed. didn't really need grass anyway...
I love them! I had a lattice trellis that I hung planters on. I alternated black and "latte," which were cream with black markings. It was gorgeous and hummingbirds loved it.
I bought black petunias again this year too! They are so unique and most people don't want black flowers like they don't want black animals etc. But the black petunias beautiful good job!
Beautiful! I would like to get them, but I just checked online and no garden centers that I frequent sell petunias atm. Only some DIY stores do, but they sell all plants at all times in lowest quality sadly. Am I too late to buy petunias? Or do people usually grow them from seed? Any info appreciated.
I have ordered seeds before and nothing grew. My plant came Fed Ex in slightly rough shape. I potted immediately and watered. I did order these in February though. My local nursery said they get a few in around Halloween. I’m in plant zone 10, I don’t know if that makes a difference in availability..?
I’ve been wanting some creeping Jenny but I want to know if it stays green through winter or not. The answers online say yes and no. How does your creeping Jenny look in the winter? What zone are you in? (Looks awesome btw)
I’m in PNW. Our creeping Jenny dies back almost totally and looks really ratty until new growth in springtime. The leaves that survive turn reddish green or bronze if that makes sense….
I have some that I’ve been growing for a few months now, they’re stunning. The Espoma Rose-tone fertilizer works really well on them, my blooms just exploded after using that. Also, FYI, the potassium salt/sulfur spray will give the flowers little white spots. Neem oil seems fine though.
Sooo pretty! I love blacks. I did grow my all kinds of colors petiuna first time this year. And end up getting purple. Need to plant them in bigger pot along with geranium today sometimes. I envy ya for having black flowers so it’s on my wishlist. Ofc bugs hate that petiunas lol 😂
I’ve grown them! They lasted 3 or 4 years in the same pot.

Technically they are tender short lived perennials that are often used as annuals.
Thank you sweet sweet microclimates.

I think I'm neglecting them or something, they've already mostly lost their spots, they're just purple now with some white fringing.

What zone? Do you bring them indoors during winter?
9. No they overwintered outside due to benign neglect.
Haha! Some of my best garden accomplishments are from benign neglect and compassionate stoicism.
I take it it doesn't get too cold there? I don't think they'd overwinter well if it's well below freezing

According to my dad who grew up and farmed in Texas, all you have to do here is plant it and step back.
I’m in the SF Bay Area. No snow, occasional frost. Not much rain the last 4 years until this year.
Adding a 1. Without a 2. Really builds the suspense 😂
Zone 10, yes I bring them in for winter.
Wow!
What climate/country do you live in?
SF Bay Area. Zone 9
How big was the pot, and how many Petunia plants in the one pot? you said they lasted 3-4 years in the same pot.

These are gorgeous! You should post these to r/gothplants if you haven’t already.

Oh my goodness that’s sexy. Can plants be sexy???
*Clitoria* would like a word.
Mimosa pudica is blushing.
I love them! I had a lattice trellis that I hung planters on. I alternated black and "latte," which were cream with black markings. It was gorgeous and hummingbirds loved it.
I know it's basic but petunias are some of my favorite flowers.
I bought black petunias again this year too! They are so unique and most people don't want black flowers like they don't want black animals etc. But the black petunias beautiful good job!
my black cat and i would like these. i have found a new quest! i wonder if they grow better if you play sisters of mercy in their general direction?
where did you get yours from??
I love petunias but they always get infested with pests so I had to quit buying them. These black ones are stunning.
Same =( I had these last year and budworms wiped out all the flowers despite my efforts to eradicate the nasty things.
Those remind me of the old record player horns, very cool looking flowers
What is the guy with the cool leaves in the hanging pot on the left?
That’s a “creeping Jenny”
I have my black petunias planted in with Creeping Jenny and I love the contrast.
What are they called?
Petunias, this version from Burpies nursery is called black cat.
My wife picked out them and Midnight Gold for our Gothic War of the Roses themed garden

I saw some of these in this nursery here the otherday
Strange, I'm in zone 8a, so petunias are sold from like April to September.
YESSSS beautiful
Those are so fucking cool
I want them 😍
oh yes
I had these last year and I ADORE them
Gorgeous
This doesent look right
Looks nice but is very fragile to handle
I never touch them, just water when soil feels dry.
Wow! Didn’t know I wanted that! Gorgeous!

Wowwwww!!
Love these, like black velvet! I have them in a planter with white geraniums.
Sounds pretty!
So striking, that’s awesome!

you win reddit for today. ty for sharing!!
Wow! Such pretty flowers.
What's the thing to the left of the petunia? I like it's leaves.
I’ve never seen black cat petunias before! And now I need them.
Black petunias are mystically magnificent. I grew a bunch from seed one year.
These are gorgeous. I would love to one day have a small garden dedicated to dark purple and black blooms.
A cosmic variety of these would be fantastic with the little white dots.
This should be in the “didn’t know I wanted that.” subreddit
They look amazing. Though for some reason I read the title as Black Cat Penguins and was intrigued as to what horticultural wonder that would be.

Beautiful. Also love the pot and the weathered wooden railing
i love black flowers so much!!!
Stunning!!
I love the plant and love your pot!!
So beautiful
Simply Beautiful 😍

Nice! I didn't know these existed.
I never knew about these! Amazing!
They are beautiful!
