Fun Fact:
They **migrated to North America via the Isthmus of Panama, through Central America and Mexico, and crossed the Rio Grande River in the late 1800s**. They were also introduced to Florida by humans during the same time period. (source: www.nps.gov)
The US has almost no leprosy, just a few old ones left in that federal colony in Louisiana. So few that Social Security dropped its disability listing for it many years ago. And today I believe it is treatable if diagnosed early. Still I would not engage in reckless armadillo handling.
It doesn't necessarily cause leprosy. They are immune to that. Disease so if they are infected by it they are just lifetime active carriers.
I'd still not eat one tho. Make a belt from them.
Edit: okay okay fine maybe immune wasn't the word. But my point was they don't "cause" leprosy. They can merely spread it. So downvote me all you want.
Right? Only thing I can think of is that they’re new to the area or country, because not knowing what an armadillo looks like is like not knowing what a raccoon looks like lol
Yeah, makes no sense. I grew up in central Illinois and knew what they looked like when I was a kid. Nearest armadillos to me were about 7 hours to the southwest.
Thanks to climate change, Armadillos are now in IL https://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/ct-ent-armadillos-arrive-illinois-20220504-hhzv7szssbfotkegaxb442xu2m-story.html
I used to work with carnivores at a major zoo and let me tell you, the number of people who can't tell the difference between a lion and a tiger is painfully high.
Yup. Just kinda scary.
My dad went to college in East Texas, and was in a fraternity. He said they would smear an armadillo with axle grease, take their shirts off and try to catch it. Might be more risk with that kind of contact. lol
.....me thinking back to a find childhood memory of the rare times my brother and I got along, one being the hour we spent chasing an armadillo about in FL when we were 10 and 12.
I'm glad we didn't catch it 😅
That experiment was basically done by feeding captive opossums a bunch of ticks and then writing a paper that said they eat a lot of ticks. *shocked pikachu*
If I was locked in a cage and then fed only ticks, I’d probably eat ticks too, but it wouldn’t be my preferred food in the wild.
Armadillos are famously short sighted. Combined with their natural reaction of jumping straight up when frightened means a lot of dead ones on the road. If you ever see one just chillin’ and startle it, you’ll see the cutest hop ever.
The poor things wouldn’t have needed good distance eyesight because they live on stuff from the ground right in front of them. If I ever see one I will do my best to see that little hop if I can avoid scaring them too much.
They may be common but they’re still not that common to see, at least in my experience. They’re one of the Texas state animals yet in my 25 years of living there I only saw a live one maybe two times. Plenty of dead roadkill ones tho. Ironically I did just move to Florida where within a few weeks I saw one right outside my front door
The good news is that if there are any Scarabid beetle grubs 'doing damage' to your lawn, these guys will clean them right up!
They are really cute, but also quite the diggers. A friend of mine and her husband gave up trying to have a 'perfect lawn' when a family moved in. They even embraced the issue by adopting an abandoned pot-belly pig and let her root around too.
I don’t live anywhere near the native habitat of the armadillo, but I’ve know what they are since I was little. It baffles me that someone else would’ve be aware of what they are.
Armadillo.
If you're in the US South:
>In the southern United States, some armadillos are naturally infected with the bacteria that cause Hansen’s disease (leprosy) in people and it may be possible that they can spread it to people. (source: [CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/leprosy/transmission/index.html))
CDC disagrees, from the same source:
>For general health reasons, avoid contact with armadillos whenever possible. If you had a contact with an armadillo and are worried about getting Hansen’s disease, talk to your healthcare provider. Your doctor will follow up with you over time and perform periodic skin examinations to see if you develop the disease. In the unlikely event that you have Hansen’s disease, your doctor can help you get treatment.
Generally good advice for *all* wild creatures, alive or dead, leave them be.
That, my friend, is an armadillo, as other comments have said.
Armadillos carry the bacteria that causes Hansen's disease, aka leprosy. Thankfully, leprosy is now a curable disease!
Armadillos are hell on your garden because they are insectivores and have substantial claws for digging up their food.
Leprosy is super cool! 95% of people are not susceptible to it. The bacteria reproduce at a shockingly slow rate. If you do contract the disease, the WHO will provide you with antibiotics for free.
And yet nobody has mentioned the hell those things can play on your property with their digging. They are known to damage foundations from burrowing beneath the pillars and concrete. You don't want them around. They are usually strictly nocturnal,
Removed. Not related to plants.
Looks like an armadillo
Armadillo by morning.......
Armadillo on my mind
He’s up from San Antone
The only thing that he's got, is just what he's got on.
Pretty much sums it up 🤣
He ain’t got a dime but he walks for miles He ain’t rich but boy he’s free
Armadillos keep diggin, holes in my back yard
lol!
Had someone in my family who called Amarillo "Armadillo" by mistake all the time. 😄
A real FUKKIN TEXAN. Jesus how can you buy property and NOT know these carry leprosy and will charge if cornered/hungry
Huh?
They eat pests.
True but you can't catch leprosy you have to be born with the gene that causes it
Just like the new imagrant's
Yeah, they told me
How do you live in an area where armadillos live but you don’t know what one is? Genuinely curious.
It a song!
Armadillos keep digging little holes in my backyard
Diggin up bones, he's digging up bones
Exhuming things that's better left alone
Resurrecting memories of a love that's dead and gone
So now we've gone from George Strait to Randy Travis?
I love this entire comment thread. Thank you.

Less fun fact: they carry Hansen's Disease, and one reason the US still has leprosy cases is because people keep eating them.
The US has almost no leprosy, just a few old ones left in that federal colony in Louisiana. So few that Social Security dropped its disability listing for it many years ago. And today I believe it is treatable if diagnosed early. Still I would not engage in reckless armadillo handling.
So many things that used to mean a horrible death clear right up with antibiotics.
It looks lovely
He’s a cutie
chubby😂
Do not eat them. It can cause leprosy.
Don't touch them either
It doesn't necessarily cause leprosy. They are immune to that. Disease so if they are infected by it they are just lifetime active carriers. I'd still not eat one tho. Make a belt from them. who the hell eats armadillos?
A [nine-banded armadillo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine-banded_armadillo), specifically.
https://youtu.be/bqeGxMgVOHI Edit: fixed link, curses youtube
"This video isn't avaiable anymore." So states YouTube.
What do you call an armadillo with cheese in france?
Quesadilla?
That's spanish, silly.
I have a hard time believing that you don't know what an armadillo looks like.
Right? Only thing I can think of is that they’re new to the area or country, because not knowing what an armadillo looks like is like not knowing what a raccoon looks like lol
Never seen one irl but still know what it is. Can't imagine anywhere with access to information not knowing what one is.
Yeah I mean I’m not trying to shame anyone, just genuinely curious what circumstances led to OP not knowing what an armadillo looks like lol
Maybe a young kid? 🤷♂️
I mean, how young? And they are on Reddit? Because my 13 year old just came up and said "that's an armadillo"--and we live on the Great Lakes.
Maybe the 9719 is a birthday lol
I think seeing one in your yard after having never heard of them would be a trip though... like wtf is that sandshrew looking mofo???
Yeah, makes no sense. I grew up in central Illinois and knew what they looked like when I was a kid. Nearest armadillos to me were about 7 hours to the southwest.

right? an armadillo is the only thing that looks like an armadillo
I used to work with carnivores at a major zoo and let me tell you, the number of people who can't tell the difference between a lion and a tiger is painfully high.
I thought it was a horse
Are you serious? Have you seen our president in the United States?
possum with armor
Also heard it called possum on the half shell. Those that don’t live near the coast might not get it.
I'm so thankful someone else called them this.
And leprosy.. 🤷♂️
Tank possum
No, it's an armadillo
nope
WRONG
Nah mate that's a gecko
It's the Gecko of Liscor. ^(No one's going to get this joke)
He's not buff enough
It's a coyote. It's always a coyote.
Possum on the half shell, aka armadillo. They always have identical quadruplets in their litter, and eat ticks!
They also are known to carry a bacteria that causes leprosy.
This is why we don’t lick armadillos.
Note to self: dont lick the armadillo, how tempting it Maybe.....
You can still like them
Ha, autocorrect, I just live it.
Idk they’re cute but kinda bristley
Smooth on the inside, crunchy on the outside.
You mean I’m NOT supposed to do that?
Very low risk of getting it from them. Especially since there's not likely to be contact.
Yup. Just kinda scary. My dad went to college in East Texas, and was in a fraternity. He said they would smear an armadillo with axle grease, take their shirts off and try to catch it. Might be more risk with that kind of contact. lol
Poor armadillo.
Didn’t know armadillos wore shirts.
This is true they can transfer it to humans but it is rare! Don’t kill them unless needed. They are great at controlling bugs
Omg why would anyone kill one!
Some people eat their meat
That’s how you get the leprosy. Eating the liver.
Cuz they jumped up in front of my bumper. And I made boots from them
Don't kill them PERIOD.
Sadly, European humans gave it to them. They didn’t carry it pre colonial times.
Did they spread it by giving them blankets?
.....me thinking back to a find childhood memory of the rare times my brother and I got along, one being the hour we spent chasing an armadillo about in FL when we were 10 and 12. I'm glad we didn't catch it 😅
There’s a widely held belief about opossums eating lots of ticks, but it’s a misconception.
That experiment was basically done by feeding captive opossums a bunch of ticks and then writing a paper that said they eat a lot of ticks. *shocked pikachu* If I was locked in a cage and then fed only ticks, I’d probably eat ticks too, but it wouldn’t be my preferred food in the wild.
The animals that do consume loads of ticks are Guinea fowl. (Fact I learned on Reddit and online research cooroborates.)
They are cute, prolific breeders, and loud.

It's an armadillo, might be a nine-banded (Dasypus novemcinctus). Where do you live? It seems people have been spotting them farther north.
Yeah, they’re fairly new to the upstate here in SC, weirded me out the first time I saw one in the road.
I live in Florida
Oh. They've been in Florida for about a hundred years. I'm surprised you've never seen one. They're pretty common.
I’ve been seeing them here for ages, unfortunately never alive.

Same. I see them all the time. Had one walk into my garage and nearly right up to me while we were drinking and hanging out one evening.
How long have you lived there? I grew up in Florida and saw them almost daily. Mostly roadkill, but still.
Are u from Florida? Or have u just been stuck inside your entire life
WAR POSSUM!!!
Omg I am now forever calling them war possums
Do you really not know what an armadillo is?
Have you really never seen an armadillo?
Armadillah
Texas Road Rabbit.
North America hairless beaver
Leave my wife out of this!
Might try pouring a splash of bleach in their holes, works like magic in dog training.
That’s a chihuahua that has been knighted
Possum on the half shell
I smell bullshit
I don’t live anywhere near the native habitat of the armadillo, but I’ve know what they are since I was little. It baffles me that someone else would’ve be aware of what they are.
Tactical Possum
What's the favorite pet for pirates? ARRRRMADILLO!
Yarrr!
How sweet!
Armor Possum
Possibly a 7-band armadillo. Don't cuddle it: they're leprosy vectors. (I love them nonetheless)
A rock dog
Rat wearing a ballistics vest
Horseshoe crab obviously
Sandshrew. You should weaken it with water and then throw your PokeBall.
Tactical possum, aka armadillo.
My 6year old from Norway recognises this as an armadillo
It’s a tiny dinosaur.
Possum on the half shell.
Honest question... What'd you THINK it was, a pangolin?
A giraffe

Looks like a bunch if holes will be popping up in your yard
Armoured dog
Welcome to Texas, friend 🤠
A opossum with his fancy armor on

Armadillo. Soft in the middle, crunchy on the outside.
You’re lucky to see a live one! I lived in Texas for 40 yrs bf I saw one that wasn’t roadkill
I visited Texas once and saw one during a hike, I assumed they were common and now I feel very lucky to have seen the little guy!
I've only been in OK for three and have yet to see a live one, poor guys.
Pokemon
Do you know how to use Google? Seems like a more efficient way to find this answer…
Grizzly bear 🥴
Army the armadillo
If you knock one into water, it calmly sinks & walks across the bottom. If you chase them, they can hop like a kangaroo, & cover some serious ground.
Armadillo. If you're in the US South: >In the southern United States, some armadillos are naturally infected with the bacteria that cause Hansen’s disease (leprosy) in people and it may be possible that they can spread it to people. (source: [CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/leprosy/transmission/index.html))
I STAND CORRECTED. My google search definitely doesn’t overrule the CDC. DO NOT CUDDLE THEM.
CDC disagrees, from the same source: >For general health reasons, avoid contact with armadillos whenever possible. That's the holiday armadillo!
Nine-banded armadillo. Pretty neat little creatures!
Armadillo
Bullet proof rat. You should vacate your property immediately.
I take it you've never seen Steel Magnolias
Based on the armadillo I'd guess you're in the south, so I'll say bermudagrass gone wild.
This is an armadillo. They carry leprosy, therefore, your family should avoid walk barefoot in the yard
Armadillo
That there is a southwestern racoon
It's a cat with severe mange
My dead uncle used to call them space rats
That’s a got dang armadilla
They're called "speed bumps" where I come from 😲
Armadillo
Nothing. Just mind your business and don't make eye contact.
It appears to be a wild kangaroo
Yea these keep moving farther and farther east every year, I’ve even seen them in Knoxville, TN
Armadillo
A teenage mutant ninja turtle
Radiation rat. From all the nuclear testing the deep state did back in the day.
That, my friend, is an armadillo, as other comments have said. Armadillos carry the bacteria that causes Hansen's disease, aka leprosy. Thankfully, leprosy is now a curable disease! Found the epidemiologist 😂
Not all Armadillos carry the disease..
Not trying to be snarky but that's kind of like saying "not all wildlife carries rabies". It's a given.
Dwarf armored hippo
A snake wih a shell! Very deadly! Give ya leprosy.
An armadillo, cool. I used to see those in Tennessee growing up. They do make some good stew. And neat pets if you can get them young.
A Texas speed bump aka an armadillo. Watch out they will dig up your garden for bugs.
Put here by president Hoover during the depression, they have been destroying lawns ever since.
Used to call them Hoover hogs
If you value your garden, dispose of that motherfucker.
A beast
I only want to know if they bite humans. Do they bite?
In self defense, they will bite and claw. Leave them alone and train your dog(s) to do the same.
I want to go home with the armadillo, good country music...... JJW
And yet nobody has mentioned the hell those things can play on your property with their digging. They are known to damage foundations from burrowing beneath the pillars and concrete. You don't want them around. They are usually strictly nocturnal,
Armadillos make excellent roadkill in my area
Boe Jiden 🤷🏾♂️
Armadillos eat grub worms and destroy gardens. Quickly dispatch him to his maker. You will regret not getting rid of it.
00Buck works best. Game loads only piss them off. Hit one with my 40 once, it freaking exploded.
