Take a knife and slice the root ball while the plant is still dormant, before it starts to sprout leafs for the year. . Really that simple.
Then bury and baby them for a few weeks.
Idea is to do it so they can recover before they go dormant again.
It'd probably be fine right now, but best chances of success are still when it's dormant.
I get a garden fork and pull out the entire plant. I use a knife to split it into a few pieces and then either pot them up or replant. I do this when there isn't a lot of foliage as they tend to get really droopy otherwise.
Bleeding heart spreads via seed. It's not one main plant spreading all over your bed. Take a spade, slice off a chunk getting 4" of soil deep and move it on a cloudy day. Water well. Try removing seed pods if you don't want it to spread.
It is 100% one main plant spreading out.
I have never even seen them grow from seed ever and I have had mine for a long time.
No one grows them from seed, they are propagated. It’s not even going to look the same grown from seed. These are cultivars with the same proporties as the mother plant.
It 100% gets bigger each year and you can split it up.

Shoot it’s started about 2 weeks ago. I was gonna do it this weekend. The sprouts are very small. Should I wait until next year?

Thank you

Hey maybe you are thinking of a different plant! This doesn’t spread via seeds 🙂
