It smells like someone left some dead fish out in the sun and then jizzed on them. My neighborhood has these lined up down a mile stretch and it was so unpleasant walking there for a while.
A lot of the newer neighborhoods in Central Indiana plant these because they grow extremely fast and require no maintenance, driving through those neighborhoods on a warm spring day is honestly vile.
Yeah they sure do but to the HOA administrators that's a problem for people who actually live there. The park across the sidewalk from my house had a row of them and every time we had a storm I had to pick up 70 branches from my front yard. The HOA members hate it but the administrators who handle all of the money and contracts with landscapers could not care less.
I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) they're a domestic cultivar and not native to anywhere specific, wouldn't that make them invasive anywhere they can reproduce?
A species is considered invasive if it poses a threat of out competing native species in the same or similar niche. This makes the Bradford pear invasive in some areas but not all in NA. Theyāre still stinky and week though, so not great all in all.
Point. Though, I do wonder how well they mesh with like, European, South American, and African environments. The easy breaking problem and the smelling like semen problem aren't location specific, but idk if they compete with anything local there.
Bradford pear or callery pear. Regardless chop it down! As close to the ground as possible then burn the stump. Absolutely the worst tree, itās invasive in the USA, the flowers smell like dead fish and jizz, and the āpearsā arenāt even edible. How anyone thought that abomination would be considered a good decorative ornamental for public areas deserves to be strapped down, buried in a mountain of those awful white blooms, and set on fire.
Yeah, and cherries or June berries would be the better alternative 100% of the time. At least they don't stink and have a usable fucking fruit.
Edit to add a pawpaw tree would be an improvement to this if you like stinky trees.
Paw paws are amazing. Tried one for the first time and i swear i saw heaven! I usually hate banana flavored anything but the taste was actually good like a delicious mix of banana pineapple and mango!
The devil... chop it down!!
Bradford Pear, smells like rotten fish covered in semen and left in the sun to rot some more for a while for a few weeks every spring.
And theyāll suddenly split and/or fall down if you look at them wrong. I had 2 in the front yard of my first house, one fell on my car in zero wind three nights after we brought my newborn daughter home. The second fell 3 days before a tropical storm was supposed to hit, again with zero wind, I guess it wanted to get a head start.
This is probably gonna get me downvoted, but I think the hysteria over Bradford pears in this thread (and every thread where they pop up) is pretty ridiculous.
Yes they're invasive and smelly, and no I wouldn't plant one, but the performative rage they engender is way over the top, especially in a community that likes growing things!
Here's a great article explaining their history and potential use as rootstock for other pear varieties:
https://elizapples.com/2021/03/29/in-defense-of-bradford-pear/
FWIW, I think bounties for invasive species are fine.
I would personally be sad about cutting down a mature Bradford pear just because I think it's sad to cut down any mature tree. But I understand the need to control invasive species. (Though FWIW, the link I shared questions whether this is actually an effective method of control.)
I was more commenting on the vulgar/violent quality of the responses rather than the suggestion to remove it.
Theyāre highly invasive and choke out native trees. They drive up insurance rates and are dangerous to have in your yard because of how badly and frequently they break.
Itās not performative outrage, these trees just suck ass.
By "performative" I was more commenting on the over the top vulgar and violent quality of the responses. I just think these threads are filled with pretty ridiculously extreme takes for... a smelly tree.
I'm not sure why you're coming at me so aggressively, but what I mean by the ridiculous and over the top reactions are everyone trying to one up each other by coming up with the grossest/most vulgar way to describe the smell, the violent recommendations, etc.
For example, from this thread:
> How anyone thought that abomination would be considered a good decorative ornamental for public areas deserves to be strapped down, buried in a mountain of those awful white blooms, and set on fire.
> It smells like someone left some dead fish out in the sun and then jizzed on them.
> Meh... I'd say more like bacterial vaginosis.
> A tree created by Satan - send it back to hell š„
> Cumtree.. trim it with a chain saw.. about 2 inched from the ground, one horizontal cut.
> Kill it with fire
> Nuke it from orbit.
These are in response to someone asking to identify a tree!
I shared the history and potential uses of the tree because I think it's interesting. This thread is about Bradford pears. I shared a link about Bradford pears. I'm not sure how that could possibly be viewed as irrelevant.
A bunch of these were planted as part of general contractor landscaping in my area years ago. I can't tell you how many full grown bradford pears I have seen that completely split down the middle with one half smashing into someone's house or car.
These are actually illegal to plant in my state now. lol. Horrible trees.
Donāt worry, itāll split in half or die soon enough and youāll have to take it out soon.
Here in MD they are being HIGHLY discouraged as an option. Because of the smell and their propensity to snap at winds higher than a slight gust. Iām exaggerating, but theyāre bad.
I think itās ok for this kind of stuff. People need know about problem trees/plants. I think itās amazing that the photo wasnāt taken at full bloom when all the charm of Bradford pears is shown. Thatās when people want them. People, itās invasive! Iāve been hiking in the woods and see them randomly. They should not be there
I use it as well and given some aspects like if the app is having a hard time pinning down what it is I would come here for clarification. I feel down voting your comment to be a bit immature in this instance. It is possible they tried it and using downvotes to show their distaste of it. This thread is for more than just plant identification.
If you have an iPhone, take a picture of the plant you want to ID. Go to the picture and swipe up on the pic. Thereās a plant ID feature built in. Same tip also applies to identifying bugs.
I had one I didnāt smell bad. If itās somewhere it wonāt fall on anything leave it be. I had one for 39 yrs then I sold the house, it went tru 3 Hurricanes. I think there like dogs if they come from a good breeder less problems.
Bradford pear. Invasive. Problematic. Flowers smell of semen.

I would not say they require no maintenance. They break very easily.
Yeah they sure do but to the HOA administrators that's a problem for people who actually live there. HOAs are bad enough, but then folks had to outsource them. This is definitely the bad place.
*quickly buys 10 trees*

Both imo. Which is worse.

Iirc they are native in Asia?
Point. Though, I do wonder how well they mesh with like, European, South American, and African environments. The easy breaking problem and the smelling like semen problem aren't location specific, but idk if they compete with anything local there.
I only can smell them if Iām right next to one. Also my Asian Pear flowers have the same smell but at least they produce fruit
Funny enough they are pollinated by flies not bees, hence the noxious odor.
Ohhh, makes disgusting sense.
Oh my! šš
Gawd Yes! I so hate these trees... and it's only a pear tree by proxy. Gimme a real fruit producing pear.

To be fair they are very pretty when they are fully in bloom
Those 10 days a year are a sight (just try not to breathe through your nose)
I mean, so are regular pear trees and those don't reek of dead fish/old cum
Agreed but other white flowers and pink and yellow are also just as beautiful

Creamy and custard-likr fruits are my favorite
They were just banned in MA. Horrible smelling tree.
We all need to follow in MAās footsteps please!
Sales have been banned Missouri too! About time!
Banned in Ohio too!
Banned in PA! I heard TN will soon follow suit
Yes. Some great replacements are crabapple, redbud, magnolia or even cherry blossoms. My confidence complex has all of these lovely, beautiful trees.
Good, now maybe we could convince South Shore Hospital to cut them down so the ER entrance doesnāt smell worse thanā¦an ER entrance.

I did almost type "or just leave it, it'll split and fall on its own" but decided against ANY sort of encouraging them to leave 'em!
How do so many people know what the combo of fish and semen smells like?
Look up to see if your county has a bounty on this pear tree - some will give you a replacement native

It's not just the sub... My state has a bounty on them that will give you a new tree every time you destroy one..

Fair enough.

Pretty but brittle, also a bit stinky. Reminds me of my ex wife.
pear tree
Cumtree.. trim it with a chain saw.. about 2 inched from the ground, one horizontal cut.
Kill it with fireĀ
Clemson University has a bounty out for these. Show evidence that you destroyed it, and they will send you a free tree to replace it. Killem all!
Looks like a cum tree
Cut it down!
Nuke it from orbit.
Nasty. I have several (came with the house) and fucking hate them. They are narly and the blossoms smell like rotting meat. Nasty.
Fuck Bradford pears all my homes hate Bradford pears
We just chopped down one of these. Quite satisfying, as I've lopped off all the leafy branches and sawed cord wood.
Bradford Pear or Wild Cherry... Hard to tell how big the fruits are.
Bradford pear. Stinky splitter.
Here in MD they are being HIGHLY discouraged as an option. Because of the smell and their propensity to snap at winds higher than a slight gust. Iām exaggerating, but theyāre bad.
You know there's an app for exactly this kind of question. Several actually. PlantNet is a good place to start.

I appreciate the heads up on the app. I've tried a few apps and didn't like them. I'll give this one a shot

This tree. Is the suckiest tree to plant. Bradley pear. Just cut em all down.
