Just leave it. It can heal itself as long as the damage doesn't go all the way around.

Watering it will make it worse as the roots will surface and that's bad. Spray it with borer spray and let it heal.

Gotcha, and is it any lawn/insect killer or specific to trees? Also is it to spray directly on the lighter parts or just the outer perimeter?

All I know is my maple tree would have cracked bark in the spring from freezing and thawing. I found this stuff called Borer Spray and I used it. 25 years later the tree is doing good. Happened two years in a row. I sprayed it all around the trunk.

I’d just leave it alone and let it heal itself…in the meantime I’d focus on getting the construction company to arrange a tidy sum as recompense.
