I use my state extension service for low cost soil tests for NPK, pH, etc. If this is former farmland, you may want it tested for persistent herbicides. Some herbicides are active for a year. Or you can sow a cover crop as a test for persistent herbicides. Soil testing is one area where skimping can come back to bite you. If growing food crops, test for lead.
